About Cowlitz Family Health Center

Cowlitz Family Health Center, located in Longview, Washington provides a full continuum of care for individuals pursuing recovery from substance use disorders. With specialties in outpatient services and intensive residential treatments, what we notice most about them is their intravenous drug user (IVDU) harm reduction program, which focuses on safety and support for individuals in the trenches of recovery. We also value their location in the downtown Longview community, where you can find beautiful outdoor areas.

To access care at Cowlitz Family Health Center, they accept Medicaid, Medicare, and most major insurance plans. They also offer sliding fee scales available if you’re uninsured or underinsured. I really appreciate that they go above and beyond to offer you personalized assistance with signing up for insurance and state-funded coverage if you don’t yet have a health coverage plan.

IVDU Program in Kelso

Their location in Kelso provides an intravenous drug user (IVDU) Harm Reduction Program for intravenous drug users. New syringes are exchanged for used syringes to help reduce the spread of HIV/AIDS. We like that this also includes personalized assistance to help drug users get into drug treatment.

Past patients often cite the care teams of Cowlitz Family Health Center as compassionate, respectful, and nonjudgmental. Testimonials reflect successful recovery journeys and appreciation for the supportive approach. Many clients highlight the convenience of integrated physical and behavioral health services.

Don't do blood draws here go to Quest. They are not experienced enough to draw blood at this place and they have Medical assistant apprentices that are CNAs that have no clue what they're doing and now I have a blown vein in one arm I suggest if medical apprentices are going to be doing blood draws they should have somebody watching them at all times because this one dropped the blood tube on the ground and basically didn't really have a clue what she was looking for or doing the nurse had to step in and help her but even she couldn't do it so a wasted trip to Family Health Center for me

I agree with most of the people that post on here that it's probably Family Health Center in town but unfortunately my doctor works there and she's probably the best so I had to change and to this one. Most of the doctors at Family Health Center will misdiagnose you because they're not real doctors their nurse practitioners but the one I have she's really good and she's she helped me when I was sick. One of the other doctors I saw at the Kelso Clinic had no clue what was going on with me so I have no choice but to go to this one

This experience is solely for the dentist office, new to the area and it’s my first year visiting this office and honestly it’s some of the worst healthcare service I’ve ever experienced compared to other places I’ve lived. Doctor truong is awesome and really nice and informative but the assistants are mostly rude and don’t seem to care much about the patient based on my experience, I always feel like my care is rushed to get me out as fast as possible. There’s also a lot of foul odors in the patient areas almost every time I’ve been to this dental office, my first visit it actually smelt like weed/marijuana when I was escorted to a room to be seen, and the assistant tending to my teeth smelt awful like sweat and body odor to a point it was actually hard to breathe around said person. For someone tending to my teeth and working in a hygiene field I expected better. Recent visits have not been any better so I may have to find a new dentist in the future. Updating this review and lowering it to a one star, both sides of this office are awful. It’s ridiculous how long it takes to get seen here and the transportation services locally are sometimes unreliable and I can’t afford to reschedule an appointment I’ve been waiting almost two months for just to have to wait another month or two because my ride didn’t show up. Being that I must depend on disability/transportation services same day appointments aren’t an option. Switching providers at the quickest time possible and won’t be back here.

Other Forms of Payment

Private insurance refers to any kind of healthcare coverage that isn't from the state or federal government. This includes individual and family plans offered by an employer or purchased from the Insurance Marketplace. Every plan will have different requirements and out of pocket costs so be sure to get the full details before you start treatment.

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Financial aid can take many forms. Centers may have grants or scholarships available to clients who meet eligibility requirements. Programs that receive SAMHSA grants may have financial aid available for those who need treatment as well. Grants and scholarships can help you pai for treatment without having to repay.

Sliding scale payments are based on a client's income and family size. The goal is to make treatment affordable to everyone. By taking these factors into account, addiction recovery care providers help ensure that your treatment does not become a financial burden to you or your family, eliminating one barrier to care.

Medicare is a federal program that provides health insurance for those 65 and older. It also serves people under 65 with chronic and disabling health challenges. To use Medicare for addiction treatment you need to find a program that accepts Medicare and is in network with your plan. Out of pocket costs and preauthorization requirements vary, so always check with your provider.

Medicaid is a state based program that helps lower-income individuals and families pay for healthcare. Medicaid covers addiction treatment so those enrolled can use their coverage to pay for rehab. When a program accepts Medicaid the client often pays very little or nothing out of their own pocket.

Military members, veterans, and eligible dependents have access to specific insurance programs that help them get the care they need. TRICARE and VA insurance can help you access low cost or no cost addiction and mental health treatment. Programs that accept military insurance often have targeted treatment focused on the unique challenges military members, veterans, and their families face.

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

outpatient iconOutpatient

Outpatient Programs (OP) are for those seeking mental rehab or drug rehab, but who also stay at home every night. The main difference between outpatient treatment (OP) and intensive outpatient treatment (IOP) lies in the amount of hours the patient spends at the facility. Most of the time an outpatient program is designed for someone who has completed an inpatient stay and is looking to continue their growth in recovery. Outpatient is not meant to be the starting point, it is commonly referred to as aftercare.

inpatient iconInpatient

Inpatient rehab enables clients who are exiting detox or who are at an increased risk of relapse to focus on their recovery in a highly structured and supportive environment. Inpatient rehabs provide intensive clinical supervision and high-level treatment. Clients remain at the facility through the length of their program and typically receive multiple addiction counseling and education sessions per day. Holistic therapies, such as yoga, message, and meditation, may be used to relieve stress and ease discomfort.

intensive-outpatient iconIntensive Outpatient

Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP) are for those who want or need a very structured treatment program but who also wish to live at home and continue with certain responsibilities (such as work or school). IOP substance abuse treatment programs vary in duration and intensity, and certain outpatient rehab centers will offer individualized treatment programs.

aftercare iconAftercare Support

Rehab aftercare programs support clients as they focus on maintaining their sobriety after intensive (often inpatient) treatment. These programs adhere to a model of life-long recovery, addressing addiction disease as a chronic, relapsing condition. Rehab aftercare services vary widely based on the specific and evolving needs of the client, but often include peer coaching, relapse prevention support, and 12 step program induction. Clients, case managers, and care teams typically collaborate on long-term care plans.

Treatments

Many of those suffering from addiction also suffer from mental or emotional illnesses like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, or anxiety disorders. Rehab and other substance abuse facilities treating those with a dual diagnosis or co-occurring disorder administer psychiatric treatment to address the person's mental health issue in addition to drug and alcohol rehabilitation.

Mental health rehabs focus on helping individuals recover from mental illnesses like bipolar disorder, clinical depression, anxiety disorders, schizophrenia, and more. Mental health professionals at these facilities are trained to understand and treat mental health issues, both in individual and group settings.

Programs

adult-program thumbnail image

Adult Program

Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.
young-adult-program thumbnail image

Young Adult Program

Young adulthood can be an exciting, yet difficult, time of transition. Individuals in their late teens to mid-20s face unique stressors related to school, jobs, families, and social circles, which can lead to a rise in substance use. Rehab centers with dedicated young adult programs will include activities and amenities that cater to this age group, with an emphasis on specialized counseling, peer socialization, and ongoing aftercare.
lgbtq-program thumbnail image

LGBTQ Program

Recovery is most successful when clients feel accepted and validated by their peers and treatment providers. Facilities that offer LGBTQ-inclusive programming are committed to creating a safe space where everyone can grow and recover without fear of judgment or discrimination. They will have dedicated policies in place to create a safe and supportive environment that fosters free expression.

Clinical Services

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a therapy modality that focuses on the relationship between one's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It is used to establish and allow for healthy responses to thoughts and feelings (instead of unhealthy responses, like using drugs or alcohol). CBT has been proven effective for recovering addicts of all kinds, and is used to strengthen a patient's own self-awareness and ability to self-regulate. CBT allows individuals to monitor their own emotional state, become more adept at communicating with others, and manage stress without needing to engage in substance abuse.

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

Trauma therapy addresses traumatic incidents from a client's past that are likely affecting their present-day experience. Trauma is often one of the primary triggers and potential causes of addiction, and can stem from child sexual abuse, domestic violence, having a parent with a mental illness, losing one or both parents at a young age, teenage or adult sexual assault, or any number of other factors. The purpose of trauma therapy is to allow a patient to process trauma and move through and past it, with the help of trained and compassionate mental health professionals.

Research clearly demonstrates that recovery is far more successful and sustainable when loved ones like family members participate in rehab and substance abuse treatment. Genetic factors may be at play when it comes to drug and alcohol addiction, as well as mental health issues. Family dynamics often play a critical role in addiction triggers, and if properly educated, family members can be a strong source of support when it comes to rehabilitation.

Life skills trainings involve all the skills a person must have in order to function successfully in the world. These include time management, career guidance, money management, and effective communication. Truly successful addiction recovery is based on the ability to not only live substance-free, but to thrive. Life skills teaches the practical necessities of functioning in society, which sets clients up for success in life, and therefore sobriety.

Nutrition therapy, aka medical nutrition therapy (MNT), is a way of treating physical, emotional, and medical conditions through diet. Specific dietary plans are designed by professional nutritionists or registered dietitians, and patients follow them in order to positively affect their physical and mental health.

The advantage of nicotine replacement therapy in Washington is the absence of the many harmful chemicals that are present in cigarette smoke. These products supply the nicotine only, so you don't suffer from extreme withdrawal and can feel more comfortable as you quit smoking.

This review is specifically for the clinic on 12th AVE of Longview, WA. The only reason I am giving this place two stars, and not one, is because of their Nurse Practitioner, Jeanie, and their secretary, Sarah, whom are both amazing at their jobs. The first counselor I saw spent most of the appointment on her computer, did not engage, did not talk much and when she did talk, she did not care. She was completely apathetic and it made me uncomfortable and unheard. I requested another counselor in which I waited almost three weeks to see. When I saw her, I was excited to finally receive proper help. She told me that she was going on vacation and basically could not help me. The appointment was five minutes of her referring me to another clinic, in which she just gave me a list of people to find on my own. I feel that because I requested a new counselor, the second one I saw, refused to help me. As far as counseling, this is the worst clinic I have ever been to. If you need an amazing Nurse Practitioner, however, Jeanie is amazing. She is caring, thorough, and does her best. As for the counselors, I feel they need more training in their fields and also do not care for helping others. This place only offers 30 minute sessions, which is not enough time to properly help others dealing with mental challenges. I would not suggest this clinic if you need proper help with your mental health.

If you want to live, go somewhere else. This place is the absolute worst. The people are rude & unreasonable. Malpractice is the only practice going on here. This place should be shut down. If you value your life, go anywhere else but hear. 👎👎

I swear this office is the worst as well as the staff, they’re always rude and I’ve even witnessed a lady yelling/raising her voice at patients who seem to be getting on her nerves before, if you value your health go elsewhere! They never have appointments available earlier than several weeks so if you’re sick and need to get in right away you can forget it unless u call right when they open at 8am to get a same day appointment, just find somewhere else.

I will never go back here again they don't communicate with each other. They don't return your calls. And the Dr. I saw for my diabetes had the nerve to ask me if wanted to die because my A1c is the highest she's ever seen. Now who says that to someone who has extreme anxiety and depression. Wish I had reported her when I had the chance.

(This is specifically for the dental section) Does it smell bad sometimes? Yeah, it's full of underserved, sometimes mentally challenged, sometimes homeless people. Of course it smells bad sometimes. Do they sometimes cancel? Yeah they have before but that's human. Are the "offices" actually just several tables separated by rolling pin boards and random objects? Yes, but that's kind of charming. Like a pop up dental office in a zombie apocalypse. Have I run into at least one unlikable employee? Sure, people have off days it happens. Is it not a good experience for people with autism? Yeah it can be overwhelming with the sounds and smells and lack of continuity, but that's also literally everything in life (I have diagnosed level 1 autism so this isn't a projection, I get it) and we still do them. So, with all this, why am I giving it a whole 4 stars? Because I have no money, I can't work, I am on SSI, and many people refuse to even see me. When I came in here to get work on my teeth, the woman who seems to be the main dentist there almost immediately picked up on that I was having some sensory overload issues, allowed me to keep my headphones on while she works on my teeth, and does an amazing high quality job. She also doesn't judge, she asks questions. She was the first person to ever ask me why I don't brush my teeth, without judgement just curious. We found out together that the bristle type on the tooth brushes I have used are too coarse and that I need an extra soft style tooth brush. Beyond that, while they were working on my teeth the assistant was talking about how she had another job where she works every day she isn't doing assistant dental work. I was so impressed with that. They are real hard workers, and they are trying. Just like the people who go to the office, who are at the bottom of the barrel of humanity, disregarded, ignored, these people deserve some respect, and understanding about why they might be a little cranky sometimes, or why the office might smell bad. As for cancelations, can you imagine how often they get sick in a place like this where people might not bath, or have issues untreated, or don't even think about things like covid, and the flu? It's probably super hard.

The front desk team is awesome!! I came in two times not on schedule, they always seem to try hard and get you seen if its an on going problem. Friendly, they thoroughly look into the problem and expedite the proper way. Keep up the good work🤙🏽
