My family member has been to a variety of rehabilitation centers (all of which, he has described as “institutional”) but Hotel California By The Sea has been such a different experience. The other places were operating in two dimensions whereas Hotel is three-dimensional. They don’t just lock clients down, sober them up, tell them to go to AA and send them on their way, they devote time to mental health and the co-occurring disorders that pair with addiction. They help the clients to feel like individual human beings by housing them in a home setting, feeding them nutritious meals, and encouraging outside activities. They regularly reach out to me as well, through monthly “family day” educational seminars (I walked away with so much more understanding after my second family day!) and also an in-person family support group. I finally feel like I have some allies and support. They don’t treat us like a number. They truly care and go above and beyond - whether it’s working with insurance to advocate what truly needs to happen, or a weekly phone call to ME, to see how I’m doing. I continue to hear these same sentiments from other family members when I’m at the family group sessions too. It’s been so encouraging.

Other Forms of Payment

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Private insurance refers to any kind of healthcare coverage that isn't from the state or federal government. This includes individual and family plans offered by an employer or purchased from the Insurance Marketplace. Every plan will have different requirements and out of pocket costs so be sure to get the full details before you start treatment.

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

inpatient iconInpatient

Residential treatment programs are those that offer housing and meals in addition to substance abuse treatment. Rehab facilities that offer residential treatment allow patients to focus solely on recovery, in an environment totally separate from their lives. Some rehab centers specialize in short-term residential treatment (a few days to a week or two), while others solely provide treatment on a long-term basis (several weeks to months). Some offer both, and tailor treatment to the patient's individual requirements.

medically-assisted-detox iconMedically Assisted Detox

Drug and alcohol addiction often takes a heavy toll on one's body. Over time, a physical dependence can develop, meaning the body physiologically needs the substance to function. Detox is the process of removing drugs and/or alcohol from the body, a process that can be lethal if mismanaged. Medical detox is done by licensed medical professionals who monitor vital signs and keep you safe, healthy, and as comfortable as possible as you go through detox and withdrawal.

heart-hands iconIntervention Services

Intervention services helps family or friends of addicts stage an intervention, which is a meeting in which loved ones share their concerns and attempt to get an addict into treatment. Professional intervention specialists can help loved ones organize, gather, and communicate with an addict. They can guide intervention participants in describing the damage the addict's behavior is causing and that outside help is necessary to address the addiction. The ideal outcome of an intervention is for the addict to go to rehab and get the help they need.

12-step icon12-Step

12-step programs are addiction recovery models based on Alcoholics Anonymous (AA). A number of substance abuse programs (including some drug and alcohol rehab centers) use the 12 steps as a basis for treatment. Beginning steps involve admitting powerlessness over the addiction and creating a spiritual basis for recovery. Middle steps including making direct amends to those who've been hurt by the addiction, and the final step is to assist others in addiction recovery in the same way. 12-Step offshoots including Narcotics Anonymous (NA), Cocaine Anonymous (CA), Dual Recovery Anonymous (DRA), Sex and Love Addicts Anonymous (SLAA) and Gamblers Anonymous (GA).

aftercare iconAftercare Support

Completing a drug or alcohol rehab program shouldn't spell the end of substance abuse treatment. Aftercare involves making a sustainable plan for recovery, including ongoing support. This can include sober living arrangements like halfway houses, career counseling, and setting a patient up with community programs like Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) or Narcotics Anonymous (NA).

Treatments

The goal of treatment for alcoholism is abstinence. Those with poor social support, poor motivation, or psychiatric disorders tend to relapse within a few years of treatment. For these people, success is measured by longer periods of abstinence, reduced use of alcohol, better health, and improved social functioning. Recovery and Maintenance are usually based on 12 step programs and AA meetings.

Drug rehab in California teaches participants constructive ways to stay clean and sober. Treatment revolves around helping individuals stop using the substance they are addicted to and learn healthy habits to avoid relapse.

A combined mental health and substance abuse rehab has the staff and resources available to handle individuals with both mental health and substance abuse issues. It can be challenging to determine where a specific symptom stems from (a mental health issue or an issue related to substance abuse), so mental health and substance abuse professionals are helpful in detangling symptoms and keeping treatment on track.

Opioid rehabs specialize in supporting those recovering from opioid addiction. They treat those suffering from addiction to illegal opioids like heroin, as well as prescription drugs like oxycodone. These centers typically combine both physical as well as mental and emotional support to help stop addiction. Physical support often includes medical detox and subsequent medical support (including medication), and mental support includes in-depth therapy to address the underlying causes of addiction.

Programs

adult-program thumbnail image

Adult Program

Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.
young-adult-program thumbnail image

Young Adult Program

Young adulthood can be an exciting, yet difficult, time of transition. Individuals in their late teens to mid-20s face unique stressors related to school, jobs, families, and social circles, which can lead to a rise in substance use. Rehab centers with dedicated young adult programs will include activities and amenities that cater to this age group, with an emphasis on specialized counseling, peer socialization, and ongoing aftercare.

Clinical Services

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a therapy modality that focuses on the relationship between one's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It is used to establish and allow for healthy responses to thoughts and feelings (instead of unhealthy responses, like using drugs or alcohol). CBT has been proven effective for recovering addicts of all kinds, and is used to strengthen a patient's own self-awareness and ability to self-regulate. CBT allows individuals to monitor their own emotional state, become more adept at communicating with others, and manage stress without needing to engage in substance abuse.

Creativity is inherently healing, and can help those in recovery express thoughts or feelings they might not otherwise be able to. Creative arts therapy can include music, poetry/writing, painting, sculpting, dance, theater, sandplay, and more. Unlike traditional art, the final product matters far less than the experience of creation and expression itself.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a modified form of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), a treatment designed to help people understand and ultimately affect the relationship between their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. DBT is often used for individuals who struggle with self-harm behaviors, such as self-mutilation (cutting) and suicidal thoughts, urges, or attempts. It has been proven clinically effective for those who struggle with out-of-control emotions and mental health illnesses like Borderline Personality Disorder.

Eating disorders include anorexia, bulimia, binge eating, and dysfunctional eating patterns. Many psychologists and other mental health professionals consider eating disorders to be food addictions, meaning food is being used in an addictive way (similar to drug or alcohol addiction). Certain substance abuse treatment programs will have treatment for eating disorders as one of the services offered. An eating disorder may also present as a co-occuring disorder or dual diagnosis alongside drug and alcohol addiction.

Equine therapy, aka equine-assisted therapy (EAT), is a form of experiential therapy that involves interactions and activities with horses. It does not necessarily involve riding horses, but all activities related to horses, such as feeding, grooming, haltering and leading them. A mental health professional frequently oversees the activities (often in conjunction with a horse professional), and helps patients process their thoughts, feelings, and behavior patterns during and/or after the interaction.

Experiential therapy is a form of therapy in which clients are encouraged to surface and work through subconscious issues by engaging in real-time experiences. Experiential therapy departs from traditional talk therapy by involving the body, and having clients engage in activities, movements, and physical and emotional expression. This can involve role-play or using props (which can include other people). Experiential therapy can help people process trauma, memories, and emotion quickly, deeply, and in a lasting fashion, leading to substantial and impactful healing.

EMDR is a therapeutic modality originally developed to help process trauma. In an EMDR session, a patient is prompted to undergo eye movements that mimic those of REM sleep. This is accomplished by watching a therapist's finger move back and forth across, or following a bar of light. The goal is repetitive sets of eye movements that help the brain reprocess memory, which can significantly reduce the intensity of remembered traumatic incidents. Associated memories can heal simultaneously, leaving patients significantly calmer, more stable, and more emotionally relaxed.

Fitness therapy blends exercise with psychotherapy for a fun, inspiring, and effective way of treating addiction and other issues. By incorporating movement into counseling sessions, clients become more empowered, motivated, and goal-oriented, all while strengthening their bodies and becoming more flexible. Fitness Therapy is usually used to complement a course of treatment (inpatient or outpatient) to make it even more successful. Increasing the connection between a patient’s mind and body helps both with healing as well as in creating new, healthy habits.

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

Hypnotherapy (aka guided hypnosis) can be used as a therapeutic modality to treat substance use, especially in terms of quitting smoking cigarettes (nicotine). Clinical hypnotherapists help clients turn their attention inward, accessing unconscious or subconscious material, and then make suggestions that are healthier for the individual. The process can help clients make deep, positive, and lasting changes, including ceasing addictive habits.

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

Nutrition therapy, aka medical nutrition therapy (MNT), is a way of treating physical, emotional, and medical conditions through diet. Specific dietary plans are designed by professional nutritionists or registered dietitians, and patients follow them in order to positively affect their physical and mental health.

Recreational therapy (aka therapeutic recreation) uses creative and fun activities to help with addiction recovery. Recreational therapists lead patients in entertaining and engaging activities like sports or games; art (drawing, painting, sculpture); drama, music, and dance; and/or community outings (field trips) to improve patients' physical, social, and emotional well-being.

Trauma therapy addresses traumatic incidents from a client's past that are likely affecting their present-day experience. Trauma is often one of the primary triggers and potential causes of addiction, and can stem from child sexual abuse, domestic violence, having a parent with a mental illness, losing one or both parents at a young age, teenage or adult sexual assault, or any number of other factors. The purpose of trauma therapy is to allow a patient to process trauma and move through and past it, with the help of trained and compassionate mental health professionals.

I came to Hotel California grieving, exhausted, and emotionally bankrupt. I had just lost my brother, my identity, my footing (literally), and most of my will to keep going. I didn’t want luxury. I didn’t want palm trees. I wanted someone to look me in the eye and say, “Hey. You’re not too far gone.” And they did. Again and again. The staff here are not just professionals. They’re humans with huge hearts and no tolerance for your BS in the best possible way. Jean is the soul-reader who’ll crack you open with one look and then make you laugh five minutes later. Amanda is a walking safe space who somehow remembers things you said once while sobbing into a protein bar. Esther is calm in human form. These women held me down when I was spiraling and showed up for me when I couldn’t show up for myself. They are the reason I kept trying. The continuity of care here is wild. Every group builds on the last. Every therapist knows your story, not just your chart. You’re not treated like a case. You’re treated like a person that is messy, complicated, and still worthy of healing. And yes, there are yachts. Actual yachts. I cried over childhood trauma while dolphins swam by. You think you’ve hit rock bottom, and then suddenly you’re in Newport Beach processing your entire existence with strangers who have somehow become your family. I have laughed so hard I snorted LaCroix. I have ugly cried and panic journaled and learned to feel again. And somehow, through it all, I remembered I still deserve a life that feels good. This place gave me more than sobriety. It gave me back my fire. My truth. My humor. My people. If you’re thinking about coming here, stop thinking. Come. And pack sunscreen. And maybe tissues. And prepare to meet the version of yourself you forgot existed.

Response from the owner
Your words left us speechless—in the best way. This is why we do what we do. To witness someone rediscover their fire, their worth, and even their laughter amid the hardest moments of their life is an honor. Thank you so much for taking the time to review and please stay in touch.

Ok, so this is for anyone suffering from addiction. I am 38 years old, I am a white male. I was addicted to Fentanyl and methamphetamine, I was on a two year run, when I finally got sick and tired of being sick and tired. After researching, I set things up to go into hotel California by the sea. This was by far the best option, according to the research I had done. Let me tell you, it absolutely was the best option. First off the intake was super easy, the guy I got on the phone was completely understanding. I missed my first appointment time and came the next day, I missed the next appointment time by two hours but they were fine with it. The detox process was absolutely the least painful detox I have ever been through. They got me to see a dr right away who listened to me and adjusted my medication accordingly based on what I informed had and hadn't worked for me in the past. Zero pain, no precipitated withdrawals for the first time In my life and im a bigger man, so I go through precipitated withdrawals every single time and I go through them for days. Not this time. From that point we were off to a great start. I went to my residential treatment house from there. It is a beautiful house. The techs(guys that run the house) were utterly amazing. Each one had a different strength that complemented the other ones perfectly. BRUNO M, I praise that man for his inspiration and drive for sobriety. YOEL, for his compassion. Steven for just utterly caring but knowing not to get involved to a point of being unprofessional(thank you Steven, I know i could tell that guy anything and he would be right there to guide and back me up. Major shoot out to him). Chris for taking care of us while we slept and being a man of god, i could talk to him about good and although younge he knows. They were all like hand picked by a master mind it felt like. LOL, as crazy as that sounds, its how it felt. Then there was my clinical team, major shoot out to Chuck for helping my understand my tramas and how to proceed through them safely. As well as brian for being my mirror, showing me how to take accountability and deal with my shit like a man. Go brain, he's the shit, but so is Chuck. For that matter the whole team. Special shoot out Roger, Great therapist as well. Helped me see my issues with my mom. The groups were transformative in learning why I do what I do and how to do things differently. Like shit I should have learned so long ago but no one taught me. Thank you for that, all of you thank you so much. This place is amazing. If your tired of Running from the fear of getting sober and the pain you think your going to go through to do it. Then run no further you found your safe landing zone. If you were anything like me, you made date after date. Telling yourself im going to get sober this day and that day would come and you would talk yourself out of it. You dont have to do that anymore. This place let me find the me that I lost so long ago with drugs and alcohol. They really truly did. My family is happy they have me back and I am so happy im back. I feel like the man I always knew I could be if the drugs and drinking was lifted from me. Hotel California gave me my life back and I am externally greatful to everyone there. Special shoot out to Roman, this man is on fire for sobriety and he will ignite that flame within you from just one group. Everyone there cares about you from the lowest man all the way to top of the ladder. You'll never know who is who, unless you ask. You will just know they care. So family's if you want your loved one back, this is the place, I promise you. There's a before and after for you in my photos.
