My experience at Jersey Shore University Medical Center was extremely concerning and left me feeling neglected as a patient. I was sent to the ER by my immunologist due to being sick. She had previously ordered blood work that was in my chart and accessible to all staff. Despite asking three different doctors and multiple nurses, the blood work was never completed. At one point, blood was drawn and left sitting in my room for over five hours. I started documenting my experience with photos and time stamps fairly early on, once it became clear this was not going to be a good experience. Nursing care was consistently unresponsive. When I pressed the call button for assistance (for example, to be unhooked from my IV to use the restroom), staff often took over twenty minutes to respond or did not respond at all. On multiple occasions, I had to leave my room to find help, only to see nurses socializing in the hallway. I was even left holding my IV bag for fifteen minutes because no one returned to reconnect it. When I experienced an allergic reaction to an antibiotic, my calls for help again went unanswered. Thankfully, a nurse happened to pass by my room, and I was able to ask for help. Disturbingly, this reaction was never documented in my records (through the app they use, MyChart), leaving me without critical information about what medication I may be allergic to. I was still given Benadryl, and I now worry I’ll be billed for treatment that wasn’t properly recorded. In addition, I was told I could not take my usual daily medications because staff would administer them instead, yet some doses were completely missed. Communication with physicians was also lacking. After waiting hours without updates, the ER doctor appeared almost immediately when I finally requested discharge papers. I am posting this publicly and fully expect a generic “please contact us” response. I am not interested in that. Unless there is a meaningful offer, an empty apology is not wanted. Overall, I felt ignored, unsafe, and like a burden whenever I asked for help. Patients deserve attentive and competent care, especially in emergency situations, and unfortunately this was not my experience. I share this so that others can make informed decisions about their care. I sincerely hope that by reading this, someone will reconsider going to Jersey Shore. Please don’t send your loved ones here, they deserve better.

Medicaid is a state based program that helps lower-income individuals and families pay for healthcare. Medicaid covers addiction treatment so those enrolled can use their coverage to pay for rehab. When a program accepts Medicaid the client often pays very little or nothing out of their own pocket.

Private insurance refers to any kind of healthcare coverage that isn't from the state or federal government. This includes individual and family plans offered by an employer or purchased from the Insurance Marketplace. Every plan will have different requirements and out of pocket costs so be sure to get the full details before you start treatment.

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Financial aid can take many forms. Centers may have grants or scholarships available to clients who meet eligibility requirements. Programs that receive SAMHSA grants may have financial aid available for those who need treatment as well. Grants and scholarships can help you pai for treatment without having to repay.

Sliding scale payments are based on a client's income and family size. The goal is to make treatment affordable to everyone. By taking these factors into account, addiction recovery care providers help ensure that your treatment does not become a financial burden to you or your family, eliminating one barrier to care.

Medicare is a federal program that provides health insurance for those 65 and older. It also serves people under 65 with chronic and disabling health challenges. To use Medicare for addiction treatment you need to find a program that accepts Medicare and is in network with your plan. Out of pocket costs and preauthorization requirements vary, so always check with your provider.

Military members, veterans, and eligible dependents have access to specific insurance programs that help them get the care they need. TRICARE and VA insurance can help you access low cost or no cost addiction and mental health treatment. Programs that accept military insurance often have targeted treatment focused on the unique challenges military members, veterans, and their families face.

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

inpatient iconInpatient

Jersey Shore University Medical Center offers an inpatient Psychiatric Unit for those individuals with a crisis mental health issue. Rehab facilities that offer residential treatment allow patients to focus solely on recovery, in an environment totally separate from their lives, however, the unit is designed to keep patients in the area, near their families, friends and other support systems.

outpatient iconOutpatient

Outpatient rehabs enable clients to receive a full continuum of care while continuing to live at home. They're often ideal for clients who are stepping down from inpatient care but some clients may prefer to transition into outpatient treatment immediately after completing detox. Many outpatient facilities also offer ambulatory medical detox for low-risk clients. Outpatient treatment generally includes psychotherapy and life skills training. Clients in opioid and/or alcohol recovery may also receive medication assisted treatment (MAT).

medically-assisted-detox iconMedically Assisted Detox

A medical detox is the safest way to wean your body off addictive substances. When you become physically dependent on alcohol or drugs, quitting abruptly can cause a host of challenging and uncomfortable withdrawal symptoms. In medically assisted detox, a team of medical professionals will be on hand to monitor any symptoms, to provide medication if possible, and to help keep you as safe and as comfortable as possible throughout this process.

partial-hospitalization iconPartial Hospitalization Program

A partial hospitalization program (PHP) is a short-term, intensive outpatient option designed for those with moderate to severe addictions who don't require 24-hour care. PHP treatment is often fully covered by insurance and provides structured programming (i.e. individual and group therapy). A typical partial hospitalization program can meet 3-5 days a week for a minimum of 20 hours, offering intensive treatment during the day while allowing you to return home after. PHP treatment duration can vary based on your progress but averages 90 days.

intensive-outpatient iconIntensive Outpatient

Clients who are exiting inpatient rehab, those who are experiencing crisis, and those who prefer to live at home while in treatment typically enroll in intensive inpatient programs (IOP). These programs feature frequent and robust care, generally requiring clients to participate in at least nine hours of care weekly, though many intensive outpatient rehabs offer up to 20 treatment hours per week. IOP services typically combine individual, group, and family counseling with recovery education and holistic therapies.

Treatments

The goal of treatment for alcoholism is abstinence. Those with poor social support, poor motivation, or psychiatric disorders tend to relapse within a few years of treatment. For these people, success is measured by longer periods of abstinence, reduced use of alcohol, better health, and improved social functioning. Recovery and Maintenance are usually based on 12 step programs and AA meetings.

Drug rehab in New Jersey is the process of addressing the complex issues involved with addiction. Challenges are identified and addressed through individual and group counseling. Participants learn how to manage these issues without the use of substances.

A combined mental health and substance abuse rehab has the staff and resources available to handle individuals with both mental health and substance abuse issues. It can be challenging to determine where a specific symptom stems from (a mental health issue or an issue related to substance abuse), so mental health and substance abuse professionals are helpful in detangling symptoms and keeping treatment on track.

Opioid rehabs specialize in supporting those recovering from opioid addiction. They treat those suffering from addiction to illegal opioids like heroin, as well as prescription drugs like oxycodone. These centers typically combine both physical as well as mental and emotional support to help stop addiction. Physical support often includes medical detox and subsequent medical support (including medication), and mental support includes in-depth therapy to address the underlying causes of addiction.

You can find comprehensive substance abuse treatment in New Jersey in drug and alcohol rehabs. These treatment programs typically provide a full continuum of care including medically assisted detox, inpatient, outpatient, dual-diagnosis, and intensive outpatient. With a comprehensive substance abuse evaluation, addiction experts provide individualized treatment plans to meet your specific needs. These programs address substance use disorders using evidence-based therapies, like cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT), individual and family counseling, and recovery support groups.

New Jersey has a variety of dual-diagnosis addiction treatment programs, including inpatient and outpatient drug and alcohol rehabs, that recognize the unique needs of individuals with co-occurring substance use disorders and mental health conditions. These programs typically employ evidence-based therapies such as cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), trauma-focused therapy, and art therapy to successfully address co-occurring disorders and support sustained recovery.

Programs

adult-program thumbnail image

Adult Program

Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.
young-adult-program thumbnail image

Young Adult Program

Young adulthood can be an exciting, yet difficult, time of transition. Individuals in their late teens to mid-20s face unique stressors related to school, jobs, families, and social circles, which can lead to a rise in substance use. Rehab centers with dedicated young adult programs will include activities and amenities that cater to this age group, with an emphasis on specialized counseling, peer socialization, and ongoing aftercare.
teen-program thumbnail image

Teen Program

Teen programs are designed to address the unique pressures teens face, pressures that can drive them to experiment with dangerous, addictive substances. They need programs that meet them exactly where they are and give them tools for long-term recovery. Therapy can help teenagers understand and work through underlying issues so they can reclaim the life ahead of them.
child-program thumbnail image

Child Program

The providers who specialize in the children's rehab space understand the specialized needs that this population faces. School-based and social services such as tutoring and family counseling are often central to treatment. Child programs may also address the needs of youth experiencing substance abuse in the home, including a parent's or sibling's addiction.
seniors-program thumbnail image

Seniors Program

Nearly one million adults age 65 and older live with a substance use disorder. Treatment providers who specialize in senior care understand the social, psychological, and physical effects of aging and how they relate to recovery. They can help clients address particular challenges and risks they may face as they get older such as overdosing and medication interactions and dependencies.

Clinical Services

ECT is a form of treatment in which controlled electric currents are passed through the brain, sometimes causing short seizures. Treatments are done under general anesthesia. ECT appears to change brain chemistry for the better, and has been shown to provide fast and sometimes dramatic improvements in severe mental health conditions that can exist alongside addiction, including depression, bipolar disorder, psychosis, and suicidality. ECT is also often used by those who prefer it to taking medication.

Research clearly demonstrates that recovery is far more successful and sustainable when loved ones like family members participate in rehab and substance abuse treatment. Genetic factors may be at play when it comes to drug and alcohol addiction, as well as mental health issues. Family dynamics often play a critical role in addiction triggers, and if properly educated, family members can be a strong source of support when it comes to rehabilitation.

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) is a non-invasive way of stimulating the brain in order to help with symptoms of depression. TMS uses elecromagnetic coils to deliver magnetic pulses to the brain, which can improve a patient's mood and ease depression. It's often used when other depression treatments haven't worked.

Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) in New Jersey typically follows a set structure of treatment. The therapist helps clients identify their life challenges and their thoughts surrounding those challenges. The client then learns to identify unhealthy thought patterns and reshape those into healthy patterns of thinking and behavior.

Dialectical means opposing. The premise of dialectical behavior therapy is to learn how two things that seem to be opposite can actually be true. You learn how to accept yourself while also making changes. The focus is on accepting your emotions and changing how you manage them.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️ When you think about what makes a hospital great, you probably picture state-of-the-art equipment, clean facilities, or how quickly someone gets admitted. But let me tell you—**what makes Jersey Shore Medical Center extraordinary is the people inside of it.** And two people in particular, **Kylie and Jordan**, showed me that heroes don’t wear capes—they wear scrubs. My friend Scott overdosed. Those words alone carry fear, chaos, and heartbreak. Walking into a hospital in that situation, I didn’t know if I’d see him alive. I didn’t know who would care enough to guide me through it. But Kylie and Jordan were there—and they didn’t just do their job, they redefined what it means to care. Here’s exactly what they did: * **They stood by Scott’s side** in his most critical moments, not letting him feel like just another patient on a chart. * **They guided me directly to his room.** No hesitation, no “wait over here,” no confusion. They understood that in a moment of crisis, time and clarity mean everything. * **They stayed in touch with me personally on the phone,** keeping me updated and making sure I didn’t feel lost in the dark while my friend fought for his life. * **They went above and beyond in every single way.** Their presence, their voices, their guidance—it all brought a sense of calm to a situation filled with fear. What really hit me is this: in an environment where so many patients come through, it would’ve been easy for Scott to just be another case. But Kylie and Jordan made sure he was seen, heard, and cared for as if he was their own family. And they didn’t stop with him—they extended that same compassion to me. That’s rare. That’s special. That’s unforgettable. It’s not just that they did their job well. It’s that they treated the situation with heart, with humanity, and with a sense of urgency that proves they take their calling seriously. **This is the kind of care that saves more than lives—it saves hope.** Jersey Shore Medical Center, if you’re reading this—please know you have two absolute diamonds in your staff. Kylie and Jordan aren’t just employees, they are the reason families like mine walk away from tragedy with gratitude in their hearts. To anyone considering where to take their loved one in an emergency, trust me: this hospital isn’t just about medicine, it’s about people who care enough to stand by you in the darkest moments. 💯 Kylie and Jordan, you have my deepest respect and eternal gratitude. You showed me what it looks like when compassion meets professionalism, and because of you, Scott had a fighting chance and I had the strength to face it with him. Five stars. Five hearts. If I could leave a thousand of each, I would. Thank you. 🙏 --FOUNDER SHANE COYLE. Child Safety Soldiers

Writing this review as a family member, my mother was seen and treated here. On 8/20/2025 she was transported to cat scan by an employee whose name is keididra L. It is astonishing how someone can be so rude especially being that part of your job is to be kind and accommodating to the patients you are providing transportation for. She rudely came in the room, would not help my mother or assist her to the bed, and had an attitude as if she did not want to be there. When my mother asked if the bed was for her she rudely replied and said “that’s the only bed there.” She clearly needs some retraining on how to speak to people or she needs to rethink her position in that field. Thanks for ruining my mothers otherwise positive experience

Response from the owner
The behavior your mother experienced during transport is not representative of our standards.  Please accept our apology and be assured that we are committed to doing better.  We would appreciate an opportunity to discuss this with you. Please contact the Office of Patient Experience at 732-776-4447 or through email at opejsumc@hmhn.org to speak with an advocate who can assist with this matter.

Yesterday I had double robotic hernia surgery performed by Dr. Seth Kipnis and his amazing team. From the front desk specialist Gigi to all the nursing staff Carlie, Malou, Rebecca, Maggie to the Anesthesiologist Doctors to the OR team and Dr. Kipnis himself I could not possibly speak highly enough about each and everyone of them. Their compassion, empathy, calming, professionalism, humor, was beyond reproach. I couldn’t have wished for a better experience. Five stars and first class from start to finish explaining every step of the procedure, answering all questions. Thank you to each and everyone of you ❤️
