How this place is still operating is beyond me. The staff is disgraceful at best. They didn’t give me my clothes until the day after I got there, I got tranquilized for being upset and not stopping crying when the nurse told me to calm down, I watched staff make fun of patients to each other and their faces, they locked us out of our rooms for hours a day and got mad when we asked to be let in to go to the bathroom. We wore ankle monitors and they just waved iPads all over us all day and while we were sleeping, the laziest ‘rounds’ I’ve ever seen. Every single tech had an attitude about everything and were rude. Even just to get my lunch I got huffed and puffed at and eye rolls, like how dare we disturb them from sitting on their butts at the nurses station. They also lied to my wife and best friend several times that I couldn’t come to the phone because I was asleep or in group, when I wasn't. The ‘groups’ were stuffing 30 adults into a musty room to watch 80s TV show reruns or sending us outside for 30 minutes to sit at picnic tables. How therapeutic! They also kept calling me another patient’s name. Didn’t give me my toothbrush until the day I left so I didn’t brush my teeth or hair for 3 days, so healthy. And the best part is when I asked to leave I was told I would be TDO’d so if I wanted to go home my best bet was to “play along,” thats literally what the nurse told me. I’ve worked in mental health facilities and hold an advanced degree in clinical psychology. And the way I was treated here left me worse off than when I came. If you love and want to help yourself, do NOT go here.

Came in against my will because of an attempt. Stopping being suicidal when I saw how bullshit the conditions were. If 0 stars were an option I’d choose it - therapist was nonexistent until she magically came back to sign us out (doctor had to step in to ask hour our feelings were instead) - Rude nurse kept peeking into the showers and when multiple patients (including myself) addressed this she cried and tried to guilt trip us into thinking it was a “trauma response” - A child had a miscarriage (to my knowledge) so they locked us all in the “school” room with a black and white movie on to drown out her screams, and no they did not let us ask about her - Banned me from going to the gym due to “fall procedure”. I am epileptic and medicated, they made me sit in the main room for hours while others got to go to the gym (I was allowed previously before this sudden change) - Staff mixed up mine and another patient’s clothing, when told that it was another patient’s clothing, the entire bag was thrown away. That patient was forced to wear scrubs - On a rather hot day, the only male patient poured the cup over himself. Just water and (maybe?) ice. The staff yelled and him and then forced him into this “punishment” room. Which was just a standard room with a bean-bag-esk bed that very clearly had restraints on it. The door had a small section cut out so he could talk, like a window. - Ankle monitors. - Staff hated handing out anything for an activity so after a while bracket making and pencils for art were only allowed during art time. Not allowed to share socials or give anything to fellow patients - Picking and choosing of when the Wii was played. Ended up sitting around for hours doing absolutely nothing FORGOT TO ADD! - Cutoff times for patients contacting their family, Staff would begin yelling at patients for taking too long (evem if they were clearly in distress/crying) - Refused to let my family know exactly when I was going to be released until angered, then got defensive and acted like my family was “threatening” them This was all in the span of a week

Accepted Insurance

Riverside Mental Health & Recovery Center works with several private insurance providers and also accepts private payments when possible, please contact to verify your specific insurance provider.

Other Forms of Payment

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Medicaid is a state based program that helps lower-income individuals and families pay for healthcare. Medicaid covers addiction treatment so those enrolled can use their coverage to pay for rehab. When a program accepts Medicaid the client often pays very little or nothing out of their own pocket.

Military members, veterans, and eligible dependents have access to specific insurance programs that help them get the care they need. TRICARE and VA insurance can help you access low cost or no cost addiction and mental health treatment. Programs that accept military insurance often have targeted treatment focused on the unique challenges military members, veterans, and their families face.

Medicare is a federal program that provides health insurance for those 65 and older. It also serves people under 65 with chronic and disabling health challenges. To use Medicare for addiction treatment you need to find a program that accepts Medicare and is in network with your plan. Out of pocket costs and preauthorization requirements vary, so always check with your provider.

Private insurance refers to any kind of healthcare coverage that isn't from the state or federal government. This includes individual and family plans offered by an employer or purchased from the Insurance Marketplace. Every plan will have different requirements and out of pocket costs so be sure to get the full details before you start treatment.

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

intensive-outpatient iconIntensive Outpatient

Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP) are for those who want or need a very structured treatment program but who also wish to live at home and continue with certain responsibilities (such as work or school). IOP substance abuse treatment programs vary in duration and intensity, and certain outpatient rehab centers will offer individualized treatment programs.

inpatient iconInpatient

Residential treatment programs are those that offer housing and meals in addition to substance abuse treatment. Rehab facilities that offer residential treatment allow patients to focus solely on recovery, in an environment totally separate from their lives. Some rehab centers specialize in short-term residential treatment (a few days to a week or two), while others solely provide treatment on a long-term basis (several weeks to months). Some offer both, and tailor treatment to the patient's individual requirements.

medically-assisted-detox iconMedically Assisted Detox

Drug and alcohol addiction often takes a heavy toll on one's body. Over time, a physical dependence can develop, meaning the body physiologically needs the substance to function. Detox is the process of removing drugs and/or alcohol from the body, a process that can be lethal if mismanaged. Medical detox is done by licensed medical professionals who monitor vital signs and keep you safe, healthy, and as comfortable as possible as you go through detox and withdrawal.

24-hour icon24-Hour Clinical Care

24-hour clinical care in Virginia features a highly trained team of professionals to treat your physical, mental, and emotional needs. Doctors and nurses are available to prescribe and administer medications. Psychologists and counselors provide professional counseling. Other experts such as nutritionists and addiction specialists may also offer support. This 24/7, comprehensive care is designed to give you the support you need to begin a successful recovery.

partial-hospitalization iconPartial Hospitalization Program

A partial hospitalization program (PHP) offers a structured environment for intensive treatment of behavioral and substance use disorders. PHP treatment can consist of sessions ranging from 6-8 hours per day for an average of 90 days. You can often expect to engage in behavioral therapies, such as cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) and dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), and receive medication. PHP treatment is often covered either fully or partially by insurance providers.

outpatient iconOutpatient

Outpatient rehabs offer community-based addiction treatment, enabling clients to remain in their homes while in recovery. Their levels of care typically include partial hospitalization (PHP), intensive outpatient (IOP), standard outpatient, and sober living programming. Most outpatient facilities offer addiction counseling and recovery-focused life skills training. Integrative programs include evidence-based holistic therapies, such as meditation, music therapy, and massage. Facilities specializing in alcohol and/or opioid addiction may also provide medication assisted treatment (MAT).

Treatments

The goal of treatment for alcoholism is abstinence. Those with poor social support, poor motivation, or psychiatric disorders tend to relapse within a few years of treatment. For these people, success is measured by longer periods of abstinence, reduced use of alcohol, better health, and improved social functioning. Recovery and Maintenance are usually based on 12 step programs and AA meetings.

When you enroll in drug rehab in Virginia, a treatment plan is designed by professional staff in order to help you overcome drug addiction and modify addictive behaviors. This may include evidence-based treatments, group and individual therapy, and relapse prevention.

Many of those suffering from addiction also suffer from mental or emotional illnesses like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, or anxiety disorders. Rehab and other substance abuse facilities treating those with a dual diagnosis or co-occurring disorder administer psychiatric treatment to address the person's mental health issue in addition to drug and alcohol rehabilitation.

A combined mental health and substance abuse rehab has the staff and resources available to handle individuals with both mental health and substance abuse issues. It can be challenging to determine where a specific symptom stems from (a mental health issue or an issue related to substance abuse), so mental health and substance abuse professionals are helpful in detangling symptoms and keeping treatment on track.

Opioid rehabs specialize in supporting those recovering from opioid addiction. They treat those suffering from addiction to illegal opioids like heroin, as well as prescription drugs like oxycodone. These centers typically combine both physical as well as mental and emotional support to help stop addiction. Physical support often includes medical detox and subsequent medical support (including medication), and mental support includes in-depth therapy to address the underlying causes of addiction.

Virginia provides substance abuse treatment for individuals struggling with addiction and co-occurring mental health disorders. These programs incorporate evidence-based therapies such as cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), and trauma-informed care. With a variety of treatment options available, including outpatient, inpatient, and residential programs, you can find personalized care to support you in achieving sobriety and learning the skills to maintain long-term recovery.

Dual diagnosis treatment is a specialized form of rehab where you receive care for both a substance use disorder and a mental health disorder at the same time. You're provided access to medical staff and mental health experts throughout the program. Additionally, mental health services tend to include multiple forms of therapy, including individual therapy, group counseling, relapse prevention education, and cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT).

Programs

adult-program thumbnail image

Adult Program

Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.
young-adult-program thumbnail image

Young Adult Program

Young adulthood can be an exciting, yet difficult, time of transition. Individuals in their late teens to mid-20s face unique stressors related to school, jobs, families, and social circles, which can lead to a rise in substance use. Rehab centers with dedicated young adult programs will include activities and amenities that cater to this age group, with an emphasis on specialized counseling, peer socialization, and ongoing aftercare.
teen-program thumbnail image

Teen Program

Teen programs are designed to address the unique pressures teens face, pressures that can drive them to experiment with dangerous, addictive substances. They need programs that meet them exactly where they are and give them tools for long-term recovery. Therapy can help teenagers understand and work through underlying issues so they can reclaim the life ahead of them.
military-program thumbnail image

Military Program

Serving in the military is both mentally and physically challenging, and can result in trauma that persists even after combat ends. Military programs are tailored to the specific and often complex needs of active duty personnel, veterans, and military families. Clients often access these programs through the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA).

Clinical Services

Cognitive behavioral therapy in Virginia is a short term form of talk therapy. Participants usually have homework between sessions, which may include journaling, self talk, and setting SMART goals. The aim is to transform negative thought patterns into positive ones.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a modified form of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), a treatment designed to help people understand and ultimately affect the relationship between their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. DBT is often used for individuals who struggle with self-harm behaviors, such as self-mutilation (cutting) and suicidal thoughts, urges, or attempts. It has been proven clinically effective for those who struggle with out-of-control emotions and mental health illnesses like Borderline Personality Disorder.

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

Trauma therapy helps you understand and manage the emotional and physical responses that often follow witnessing or experiencing traumatic events. Using therapeutic interventions, your therapist works with you to reframe that experience, which in turn reduces your anxiety and helps you regain control over your life.

We just found out that this "hospital" released my husband's son into the streets while still showing signs of mania and paranoia. He is now homeless and a danger to self, unable to care for himself, and possibly a danger to others. If something happens, we are coming for this place with all the law allows. I am an attorney and I will make it my number one priority. We are beyond angry. Shame on you people!
