American Addiction Treatment Center is affiliated with the Pinnacle Treatment Centers network. This clinic is in Newport News, Virginia. Their main treatment options are medication assisted treatment and outpatient counseling for adults and pregnant women. Medication assisted treatment consists of meds that can help you with your withdrawal pains a
it's a mostly good place. not all the staff are my favorite, but that's going to happen anywhere. the new director was handed a pile of mess and is trying to make the best of it while making things better at the same time, and she's doing the best she can with what she was given from what I can tell. most of these patients just don't have.... patience. I've seen them corner staff members and scream at them for being held outside while a patient is having a medical emergency in the lobby. they only care about themselves, and there are no employees or security on drugs or smoking pot outside. I'm hopeful they can get to a place where they can have a really good crew that stays for a long time and works cohesively together. I'm glad this clinic is here for those of us that need it. the only staff member I truly have an issue with is a counselor (?) Sarah. I'm not sure what her problem is but she looks at us and treats us like we're just a bunch of junkies and nothing more. she is rude to clinic patients, she's not understanding to any situation, she lies to patients just so she doesn't have to do something, or even try, and the worst one: she also breaks HIPAA - her office is right off the lobby & if you're standing there, you can hear both sides of her entire Zoom call therapy appointments because she keeps her door wide open during these calls. I heard everything one young woman said in her appointment, very personal things. she should be ashamed of herself. the behavior I have seen from her is honestly unacceptable, and I don't believe this is the job for her. if you think addicts are beneath you, you shouldn't be working here Sarah.

I would highly recommend this facility to anyone who is struggling with addiction. For the first time in my life I have found a place with a staff that not only cares deeply for their patients, but also do not make their patients feel judged. They really do seem to care beyond any other facility I have been to, and I have been to several. I still have a long way to go, but just knowing that they see their patients as human beings who are in a lot of pain emotionally and mentally, and not just “junkies” , is what gives me the strength and courage to keep trying. The staff is absolutely amazing. I will forever be grateful for this , facility, the staff, and the doctors associated with this treatment program.

This program at this facility helped me work my own recovery. I had good and okay counselors the one I'm moving facilities from I will miss greatly. She advocated for my constant part in the program I followed their program and in turn I have been rewarded with freedom from my active addiction. Even if I need to be in this program longer than other people think, I'll always be grateful to this place and the professionals that showed up every single day so I didn't have to be a street addict anymore with no way of accomplishing mental health and sucess. Thank you, I hope the next pinnacle in my journey sets a gold star like all of you!

This review is for the acute inpatient psych hospital. We sadly have experience with multiple inpatient facilities. This place was the first time we got a personal phone call from the psychiatrist. Dr. Berger seemed genuinely concerned with helping and asked thoughtful questions taking the time to understand our situation. Mr. Kip (staff member) was so kind and made a lasting impression on our child. No inpatient experience is fun but if I had to send my child somewhere (which is just a sad reality sometimes) this place would be on my short list.

As a graduate of this program I am just here to refute the negative review left by a former beneficiary. Before you enter the program you are given in detail what you are signing up for. You are told from the beginning this is a Work Therapy program, and that you will have to attend Christian based spiritual classes and services. The resident managers have to deal with up to 100 something men so please don't listen to that one negative review about the program itself and about the program employees who's names should not be mentioned. Without God placing me here I would be on the street, dead in my addiction or worse. They do not force you to stay. The doors are meant to keep randoms out, not to keep someone unwilling to change their life, in. If you are struggling with addiction, or want to grow in your relationship with Christ, or even if you have no religion you are welcome here. But again, this is a work Therapy, Christian based program. Those who complain know exactly what they are signing up for . God bless.

Kara Zuege had these remarks about Ms. Elle. Ms. Elle has given me something I’ve been without for a very long time: true support and someone in my corner. With her assistance, I have been able to set both mental and physical goals and work toward achieving them. I appreciate her so much for reminding me what it feels like to accomplish something and to experience the reward of putting forth effort and working hard. She has guided me not only in my journey of overcoming substance abuse but also in many other areas of my life. my review is specifically of the APY unit, the lesser intensity of the 2 adult units. Listen, nobody likes being admitted to a recovery center. it’s not a luxury hotel, it is designed to keep you safe and regulate you and this place serves its purpose well. The care team genuinely has a heart for providing care for the patients (with maybe one or two misfit employees who arent as motivated by kindness, as in any work force.) I felt respected and dignified during my stay there. i watched staff interact with difficult patients and offer them the same grace and dignity. The groups were largely effective and the meals were as to be expected with regards to my dietary needs. daily art therapy was delightful! I didnt love having to be there but i want anyone considering APY to know i had a positive experience. I don’t want to return but if i ever need to i would know i’d be in capable hands.

I have nothing but amazing things to say about Barry Robinson. They helped my son at one of the hardest times of his life, after dealing with an unfortunate death of his best friend. He participated in the intensive outpatient program and actually enjoyed going 2-3 times a week. I felt like the treatment team really took the time to listen and understand the loss and other stressors and helped him cope. I have worked as a RN in the Pediatric ER/Mental Health field for over 20 years and now I have the pleasure of teaching our future RN's. I have been bringing Nursing Students to Barry Robinson weekly for the last few months and I am in awe of this facility. The grounds are emasculate and so peaceful. Today we spent so much time outside in the gorgeous weather socializing with the clients and staff. There were teen girls lying on blankets, in the grass reading a book, a few kicking a soccer ball, some just in the shade hanging with their staff talking about life. The teen boys are across the giant lawn some throwing a football, some listening to music and writing their own lyrics, while others are playing a card game with their staff in the shade. It resembles a college campus with a happy group of students between classes. The inside is so colorful and happy, as it should be. The staff is engaged and organized and treated so well by leadership, which is rare. This is why there is little to no turnover here. Hands down the most peaceful Mental Health Facility I've ever seen.

I'm a mom of a child who has now spent 10 months here. My child has severe behavioral issues and is not an easy child to deal with. She has severe ODD, has assaulted her own therapist twice while in the BRC, and smuggled in dangerous items. The BRC has been a blessing to help us figure out some of the root causes to my child's behavioral issues even when her heels were dug deep into the mud. 10 months ago my child would shut down for hours to days at a time before or after an attack, now she communicates freely (even if it's not healthy communication) and outwardly says whats on her mind. The BRC may not have been the best fit for my daughter with the level of care she needs, but they have certainly done all they can to provide everything they can for her and that's all I can ask right now. The progress we have seen has been slow but not every child moves at the same pace. The BRC isn't a magic center that works miracles for every person that walks into its doors, but they do care and they do set a foundation that has helped our family learn communication, boundaries, and how to interact with therapies. Jhane and Karen have been wonderful to interact with no matter how bad things get, and Ms. Moe in the Grissom Dorm has been an absolute lifeline for my daughter. My child is in the process of transferring to another facility but I firmly believe it's because of the help from the BRC that she's not transferring to a juvenile detention center instead. I genuinely believe this facility cares. They may not be super high tech with modern updates and a spa like setting, but they have sufficient resources to assist a variety of mental health issues impacting children of today and they have done everything they can to make sure they're providing the best care that they can for my daughter. Thank you Barry Robinson Center for your care and expertise during the hardest time of my daughters life.

My son spent nearly seven months at BRC and within just a few days of his return home, it has already made a world of difference for him and has helped him to learn how to cope with the issues that had been troubling him. My son's Clinical Therapist did a great job of working with him throughout his stay and was also extremely helpful to my wife and I with any questions or concerns that we had. She also made sure to actively incorporate us into our son's therapy which which really made us feel like we were part of the the process of helping our son, even though we were on the other side of the Atlantic Ocean while it was going on. I strongly endorse the Barry Robinson Center as well as our son's Clinical Therapist to any family who has children who need a high level of support for major behavioral health issues.

While nobody wakes up wanting to go to a mental health hospital, specially on a TDO (temporary detention order), I must say The Pavilion turned out to be a God sent for my son! My son had 2 TDOs in Florida and after 3 days would check himself out. Thankfully, this last time it happened in Virginia and the system was different. In other words, he wasn't going to get released just because he wanted to. On the contrary, he was kept in the hospital until he got well. After 18 days, I finally had a conversation with my son and heard him as the son I knew and know he is in my heart. He had not been like this in 4 years. It would not have happened without the support of the staff in the Pavilion- the Case Workers: Tonya and Kamryn and the nurses in unit 400. Tonya and Kamryn were my lifeline to him being released successfully and at the right time, making sure I communicated with them to let them know what my son was like when he was healthy- this was crucial! These ladies love what they do and it shows. It is not easy to reach them, but have them on speed dial, because eventually you'll reach them. NOTE: The process overall can be VERY frustrating, especially because my son didn't sign the ROI (release of information) right away and nobody would tell me anything, and although that was VERY difficult to understand, especially because I was so far away, I continued to insist and call multiple times a day. At the end of the day, I was fighting for my son and his rights to get healthy. I personally traveled to the Pavilion from South Florida and confirmed it was a beautiful place, well kept with kind staff. It is not perfect and I'm sure they have a lot to work on, but the result? A son who went back to his baseline, who is in touch with his true self and a family that is more than grateful to finally have a chance to support him and love him back to the best version of himself. If your family member is here, my advice is this: 1) Be ready to call as many times as needed, to as many extensions as needed until someone hears you (they are busy doing the work and are not always available). You will be frustrated at times, but breath and keep going. Try to email as well. 2) Insist on requesting your family member signs the ROI- things got MUCH easier after that. 3) Visit your family member (ask for visiting hours and days)- I feel like when there is a familiar face, the staff begins to know who you are and they communicate more with you. 4) When you speak to your family member, tell him/her to cooperate and give them the names of the Case Worker so they can know who to turn to for help. Lastly, whoever you are and wherever you are, I pray God will give you and your family member a breakthrough. Don't lose hope and don't lose faith.

Thank you for everything. Despite the negative reviews, I can confidently say that the care provided at the Pavilion is deeply rooted in the patients’ well-being. Every action, even when difficult, was done with the intention of helping us stabilize and heal. The psych techs did the best they could with the resources available to them, and it showed. The night shift in particular was especially compassionate and grounded. The nurses were incredible, offering both medical support and emotional presence. The psychiatrists and doctors were thorough, respectful, and intentional in their care. And the social workers were kind and supportive throughout the process. My only recommendation would be for the social work department to offer more personalized accommodations for patients in unique situations. For example, I was in a long-distance relationship and wasn’t able to make a call to my partner despite advocating for it, which affected my emotional regulation. I also had college finals and final projects to complete during my stay, and unfortunately no efforts were made to help me navigate that. I understand they’re limited in scope, but a little extra advocacy in those areas would’ve made a big difference. Still, I am overwhelmingly grateful. My time at the Pavilion changed my life. And hopefully one day, I’ll walk back through those doors—not as an inpatient, but as a psychiatrist. Thank you for being part of my healing. — Erick Ayala Contreras

Please note its been 2½ months since I completed this review and I still feel 100000% the way I did when I wrote it! I'm quite the brand new patient with this office and while I can't give a lengthy history on the incredible staff--I can give what I've experienced in just 2½ short months. For starters, Morgan Scott--one of the most receptive medical professionals I've ever worked with. I'm 35 and have been in and out of psychotherapy offices since I was 14. Between insurance changes, offices closing, etc, I've seen and endured(yes, endured)some horrific treatment from past places. I reached a personal breaking point recently and while I am still on the wait list for therapy, I still reached out to the office in hopes there was something, anything to be done in hopes of help in a crisis that didn't require hospitalization. Not only did she reach out to me on her day off, she found me additional help and did what she could to listen and hear me out. I left the VM and within the hour I was on the phone with her being heard, ”seen", and given options and chances to get additional help. An emergency therapist that wasn't with their office was provided to me as well. In a nutshell, I've never felt the rallying of an entire office in the just this short of time as a patient. And I saw the same therapist from 14-20. This office CARES. The staff are knowledgeable, helpful and pool their resources when they have a patient in need. I have NEVER, in the 20 years of my life of psychotherapy felt more seen and cared about by an entire office the way I did yesterday. I felt like more than a copay and another zero added to that long line on their paycheck. I felt like a REAL PERSON, who's existence and feelings mattered and were of importance. I truly hope and plan to be a patient here for as long as these amazing humans are in business. The core of these individuals is nothing short of angelic in how they handle matters of crisis or even your every day appointments. And as one knows while in this world of psychotherapy, your support system and help from medical professionals is just as important as the support system outside of the office walls. Thank you all for the incredible rallying and assistance I was given, the grace, and most importantly the support. I am in awe of this entire office and how they treat patients. Even brand new baby ones like me. Thank you again to everyone who was part of it and for showing up to work everyday to truly help those like myself that face these immense struggles. Having a team like y'all in my corner gives me a sense of trust that I will continue to be given the best care they can provide me and others as a patient. 1000000/10 stars. Highly HIGHLY RECOMMEND

I have been coming to this practice for 6 years, seeing both Dr. Bohan (retired now) and Regina Carroll (currently). Everyone in the practice, from the front office staff, to the clinicians and the management staff are friendly, compassionate, knowledgeable and profession and it feels very much like a calm home environment. They clearly care about their clients. Regina is and has been an incredible support to me, helping me through some very difficult times. Her sole focus is to listen and help you in whatever way she can including EMDR trauma therapy. She is experienced, compassionate and genuinely cares, just lovely and wonderful!! I would not be where I am today without her. I also want to mention Alyson (practice manager), her hard work, dedication, ethics and heart for this practice are evident. I have always been more than pleased with the care and support that I have received. We are fortunate to have such a great practice in our area, I am so grateful for them. I have recommended them to family and friends and will continue to do so.
