Von 3 weeks ago I've only been a patient at 2 different methadone clinics --this one and a different one-- so I'm not able to compare a lot. For what it's worth, this clinic is decent. I can't speak to how the transfer process is, as I haven't had to do that yet. I've overheard horror stories from other patients, but those were all from 2+ years ago, before the clinic changed owners. This clinic used to be called "Woodbridge Methadone Treatment Center", inexplicably, considering it's about 30 min. away from Woodbridge. So at least the new owner cares about fixing things that don't make sense. Now for the more important stuff: I've had problems at this clinic. However, with time and persistence, they have almost all been addressed and fixed. Above all, you absolutely must advocate for yourself. That doesn't mean "be rude and bully the staff", it means "you're a patient and this is a medical facility: make your medical needs known, and if you feel you're being dismissed or ignored, find an advocate". Prior to the ownership change, there were many mistakes being made (it seemed like every month there'd be some new, important issue with my care that I needed to address / fix--frustratingly, all of which stemmed from things not in my control). However, thankfully, after the ownership change, I've not had these kinds of issues. I'm not sure if they changed procedural systems, made specific staffing changes, if it was due to something else, or even a coincidence, but I'm happy to not be dealing with a new issue every time I go in. Regarding the staff: this place has a revolving door of staff. I'm not sure if that's common for all methadone clinics, but I imagine it probably is pretty common. Unfortunately, it's not good for patients, whether it's commonplace or not, esp. when it's the counselors that are turning over so quickly. It's not been very long since the new ownership (I think only about half a year), so it's hard to say whether it's really a trend or just my imagination, but it seems as though staff turnover has slowed down since the ownership change. Prior to it, staff turnover was atrocious: in the several years I've been a patient here, I can't even recall the number of counselors I've had assigned to me: it was at least 5, perhaps closer to 7 or 8? I don't know, and half of them I never bothered remembering their names. However, there were a few with whom I did genuinely bond, and who I truly did feel as though they cared about me as a patient and as a person, incl. my current counselor. That almost makes it worse when they inevitably leave, but that's not any different from the normal therapy-client relationship anyway: eventually, the relationship ends. I do wish, however, that the owners would pay the staff more, or give them better incentives, so that they would be more inclined to stay for longer. Perhaps, if I'm correct in my observation that staff turnover seems to have slowed, the new owners actually did do that? One can hope. Since the clinic changed owners, I've noticed some other improvements: small things like the addition of complimentary feminine hygiene items in the bathroom, and bigger things like opportunities for winning money in the form of gift cards (raffles, bingo) -- which is certainly appreciated considering if you don't have Medicaid, you will be paying ~$18/day out of pocket. They seem more willing to make accommodations as well, based on the needs of your care, which is certainly appreciated. Unfortunately, my current biggest concerns regarding accommodations are difficult to address: both involve the bathroom. There is only one patient bathroom. One. If anyone is in there for any reason, you will have to wait. This is a horrible, critical failure of planning for a methadone clinic, for which federal regulations stipulate regular monthly urinalyses, and quarterly observed urinalyses. For someone with paruresis (a shy bladder), this is even worse. I'll be seeing what accommodations can be made, but my hopes are limited. There’s a thoughtful balance here: it’s structured and clearly designed to support meaningful work, while still feeling open, comfortable, and human. There’s a sense that people are visible, supported, and part of something shared—whether that’s during structured programming or more informal moments of social connection. Meeting members of the team only reinforced that impression. Everyone I interacted with was engaged, grounded, and clearly invested in the work they’re doing. The staff checked on us, fed us, and gave us blankets. We saw them touching base with some individuals who were clearly in crisis and they were just so patient and caring. Dr. Smith was our emergency services doc and I wish he could see people regularly because he was funny and he made my program participant feel heard. They do not offer detox specifically but if you're doing a detox, they are able to support with their varied staff of psychiatrists, PRN, nurses, and psychologists as well as peer support specialists. I wouldn't have made it to today as psychologically intact as I am without them! My issues were: they cannot always accommodate a vegetarian or vegan diet & the nightly bed checks require some disturbance if you're a light sleeper. I have also been told that the Kellar School is not technically connected to this location despite sharing a name and resources, so if you see any reviews here for that, just disregard them. And now for the actual review: My 13-year-old has a lot of developmental and intellectual deficits that has made finding a psychiatrist who can treat her extremely difficult, as most do not have the necessary expertise to communicate with her in a way that doesn’t send her into a behavioral crisis and unfortunately more than a few psychiatrists are unwilling break from their usual playbook when planning her care because they just don’t work with this population enough or they don’t have adequate time in their schedules to allow for a truly individualized approach for care. Basically, working with Autistic/intellectually disabled children is an art form, and only a few providers can wield that brush effectively. Dr. Shruti Tewari is this provider. The way she is able to talk to my child at her level of understanding without coming off as condescending is incredible, and actually allows my child the dignity and ability to be an active participant in her care, which is a right but absolutely not a guarantee for the neurodivergent patient. Just to give a little taste of what previous psychiatry practices find acceptable, up until now appointments have involved my child staring off into space while the clinicians completely ignore her the whole appointment, opting instead to just have us, the parents, answer questions about what we think her issues are, which puts me in the difficult position of having to talk about her like she isn’t even in the room when she’s actually able to understand just enough of what is going on to know we are talking about her like she is just a problem to solve, which I’m sure you can imagine is not great for a growing child’s self-esteem. Anyway, to wrap up a review that somehow now also doubles as a rant about how absolutely dismal the current state of American mental healthcare is, Kellar’s reception staff is kind, professional, and they actually answer the phone (no dealing with call centers 5 states away or playing the endlessly frustrating game of email tag! Woo!). Yes, there can be a fairly long waitlist for this practice, but trust me, put your kid on it anyway, because by the time your child’s number comes up you’ll more than likely be joyously ready to switch from whatever psychiatrist you did end up finding for them. And If the other psychiatrists at this practice are even half as competent as Dr. Tewari, you are already in better hands than you would be with 99.9% of other providers, and I’m sure you want what’s best for your kid, otherwise you wouldn’t be here, would you? Good luck with everything, having a child who needs psychiatric help can really drain your spirit no matter how much you want to be better than that, hopefully this review can help make your family’s journey just a little bit easier and a lot more humane. He puts his patients interests first and doesn't force medications on his patients. He listens, is thorough and builds trust by allowing the patient to do what is best for them.
