⸻ My Experience at Mount Vernon Hospital I had one of the worst experiences at Mount Vernon Hospital, especially in the emergency room. The doctors were extremely rude and unprofessional, showing very poor bedside manners. The nurses also had a terrible attitude, particularly toward elderly patients—they simply did not seem to care. The case manager was even more rude, which left me shocked. I couldn’t believe this is the level of service in our health system. Patients are not asking for favors—they are paying for care and deserve to be treated with professionalism and respect. This broken system needs to be fixed. Everyone deserves quality care, no matter their age or background. eviews) I am very disappointed with the care my 88-year-old father received at Mount Vernon Hospital’s emergency room. This is the third time we’ve faced problems there. When I brought him in at 9 am because he vomited and couldn’t breathe, the doctors and nurses did not act quickly. Instead, they pointed out his age as a reason not to take aggressive steps. Only after we insisted did they finally put him on a ventilator. By the next day, his body responded—his heart was working and he showed strength. This proves that if they had acted faster, he could have been helped sooner. It breaks my heart that his age was used against him. In America, so close to Washington D.C., I never expected to see patients treated differently because of their age. It felt like something that should never happen in this country. Every patient deserves equal care and respect—no matter their age, race, or religion. Unfortunately, Mount Vernon Hospital ER failed my father in this moment.

Vernon LTAC was a terrible experience for our family. Some nice individuals in a system with no leadership or accountability. We made several attempts to get them to update and correct their records (this is NOT an Inova system and Select Medical and Inova systems are not integrated), but couldn’t get any assistance. My dad died there when we were trying to get him transferred out and now his death certificate is permanently incorrect. Avoid the LTAC for your loved ones. They couldn’t even comply with Virginia state law in coordinating with mortuary services….it was a clown show at best.

5 Stars – A Dream Team of Therapists! Recovering from a broken femur after a slip and fall was one of the hardest challenges I’ve ever faced—but I couldn’t have asked for a better support team than Karina (OT) and Kathryn (PT). These two incredible women were so patient with me, especially when I would get in my head and just needed a moment to regroup. They never rushed me, never judged me—just gave me the space and encouragement I needed to keep going. Their compassion, empathy, and professionalism made such a difference in my recovery. They didn’t just treat my injury—they treated me as a whole person. I always felt heard, understood, and genuinely cared for. Thank you, Karina and Kathryn, for helping me regain not just my mobility, but my confidence. I’m so grateful for you both!

Accepted Insurance

Inova Mount Vernon Hospital works with several private insurance providers and also accepts private payments when possible, please contact to verify your specific insurance provider.

Other Forms of Payment

Private insurance refers to any kind of healthcare coverage that isn't from the state or federal government. This includes individual and family plans offered by an employer or purchased from the Insurance Marketplace. Every plan will have different requirements and out of pocket costs so be sure to get the full details before you start treatment.

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Financial aid can take many forms. Centers may have grants or scholarships available to clients who meet eligibility requirements. Programs that receive SAMHSA grants may have financial aid available for those who need treatment as well. Grants and scholarships can help you pai for treatment without having to repay.

Medicare is a federal program that provides health insurance for those 65 and older. It also serves people under 65 with chronic and disabling health challenges. To use Medicare for addiction treatment you need to find a program that accepts Medicare and is in network with your plan. Out of pocket costs and preauthorization requirements vary, so always check with your provider.

Medicaid is a state based program that helps lower-income individuals and families pay for healthcare. Medicaid covers addiction treatment so those enrolled can use their coverage to pay for rehab. When a program accepts Medicaid the client often pays very little or nothing out of their own pocket.

Military members, veterans, and eligible dependents have access to specific insurance programs that help them get the care they need. TRICARE and VA insurance can help you access low cost or no cost addiction and mental health treatment. Programs that accept military insurance often have targeted treatment focused on the unique challenges military members, veterans, and their families face.

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

outpatient iconOutpatient

Outpatient rehabs offer community-based addiction treatment, enabling clients to remain in their homes while in recovery. Their levels of care typically include partial hospitalization (PHP), intensive outpatient (IOP), standard outpatient, and sober living programming. Most outpatient facilities offer addiction counseling and recovery-focused life skills training. Integrative programs include evidence-based holistic therapies, such as meditation, music therapy, and massage. Facilities specializing in alcohol and/or opioid addiction may also provide medication assisted treatment (MAT).

inpatient iconInpatient

Residential treatment programs are those that offer housing and meals in addition to the mental health treatment. Their inpatient treatment provides a safe environment for residents to recover. The staff include psychiatrists, nurse practitioners, counselors, and case managers. Additionally, ECT is provided on a case by case basis.

partial-hospitalization iconPartial Hospitalization Program

A partial hospitalization program (PHP) offers a structured environment for intensive treatment of behavioral and substance use disorders. PHP treatment can consist of sessions ranging from 6-8 hours per day for an average of 90 days. You can often expect to engage in behavioral therapies, such as cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) and dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), and receive medication. PHP treatment is often covered either fully or partially by insurance providers.

medically-assisted-detox iconMedically Assisted Detox

Known as the first step of the addiction recovery process, medical detox is the removal of addictive drugs and alcohol from your body and helping manage physical withdrawal. Medically assisted detox takes place in an inpatient setting where you will be closely monitored by a team of medical professionals to ensure your maximum health and safety. Medications like Suboxone or Vivitrol may be administered if needed to alleviate any potential withdrawal symptoms. This process is typically at least partially covered by most insurance plans.

Treatments

Mental health rehabs focus on helping individuals recover from mental illnesses like bipolar disorder, clinical depression, anxiety disorders, schizophrenia, and more. Mental health professionals at these facilities are trained to understand and treat mental health issues, both in individual and group settings.

Programs

adult-program thumbnail image

Adult Program

Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.
young-adult-program thumbnail image

Young Adult Program

Young adulthood can be an exciting, yet difficult, time of transition. Individuals in their late teens to mid-20s face unique stressors related to school, jobs, families, and social circles, which can lead to a rise in substance use. Rehab centers with dedicated young adult programs will include activities and amenities that cater to this age group, with an emphasis on specialized counseling, peer socialization, and ongoing aftercare.

Clinical Services

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

Nutrition therapy teaches you what to eat and not eat, how to grocery shop, how to cook easy nutritious meals, and how to use food as medicine to address your health issues. These skills will help speed up your recovery process and reduce the risk of relapse.

Recreational therapy (aka therapeutic recreation) uses creative and fun activities to help with addiction recovery. Recreational therapists lead patients in entertaining and engaging activities like sports or games; art (drawing, painting, sculpture); drama, music, and dance; and/or community outings (field trips) to improve patients' physical, social, and emotional well-being.

I had an unexpected visit to the hospital yesterday. I interacted with multiple nurses (I didnt catch all of their names, Aneera was our main nurse) and the doctor was Dr. Redmond. They were all fantastic. The nurses were very caring and quick to help. The doctor was informative and thorough. The emergency department looked nice and was quiet as well. I'd rather not go to the ER, but if I need to, I wouldnt hesitate to go here again.

The onsite physical and occupational therapists have been a gift from God for my wifes recovery after a stroke. They are kind and give you an entire session of one on one sessions unlike the 3 or 4 patients at the same time common at other places. The home visits are not as impressive and wait to get onsite therapy is a pain but well worth the wait. The excercises they come up with are challenging and healing and cant thank Mikayla, Bradley, Kyle, Caitlin, Hannah and so many more for all their loving care. God bless you and your work !

Dear Hospital Administration or Patient Relations Department I am writing to share a concerning experience I had at the Mount Vernon Hospital cafeteria. On the morning after my father had been admitted to the emergency room following a long and stressful wait, I went to the cafeteria. Unfortunately, I was treated by a staff member in a very rude and unprofessional manner. The employee spoke to me—and other customers—in a dismissive and disrespectful tone, as if we were not deserving of basic courtesy. It felt as though we were being looked down on, and the way we were spoken to was immature and inappropriate for a healthcare environment. As someone who was already under stress due to my father’s emergency, I was shocked by how poorly I was treated. I hope the hospital will look into this and take steps to ensure all staff treat customers and visitors with respect and professionalism. Thank you for your time and attention to this matter.

Sara Harland, I appreciate your perspective on Inova Mt. Vernon Hospital. It’s important to recognize that everyone is entitled to their own opinions and experiences regarding healthcare. It's not uncommon for medical professionals to approach patient care with varying degrees of empathy and understanding, which can lead to differing experiences, especially when patients feel marginalized or misunderstood. Each individual's background and circumstances can shape their interactions within the healthcare system, influencing how they are treated and perceived.
