I’ve been seeing Dr Kira Bleecher for almost ten years now. I couldn’t ask for a more supportive and patient psychiatrist. She has helped me through many ups and downs, and navigating life’s challenges. Without her, I wouldn’t be where I am today. I can’t recommend her enough!

my review is specifically of the APY unit, the lesser intensity of the 2 adult units. Listen, nobody likes being admitted to a recovery center. it’s not a luxury hotel, it is designed to keep you safe and regulate you and this place serves its purpose well. The care team genuinely has a heart for providing care for the patients (with maybe one or two misfit employees who arent as motivated by kindness, as in any work force.) I felt respected and dignified during my stay there. i watched staff interact with difficult patients and offer them the same grace and dignity. The groups were largely effective and the meals were as to be expected with regards to my dietary needs. daily art therapy was delightful! I didnt love having to be there but i want anyone considering APY to know i had a positive experience. I don’t want to return but if i ever need to i would know i’d be in capable hands.

The Crisis Stabilization Center at Hampton Newport News serves adults age 18 to 64 in Hampton, Virginia. This is a residential program that helps you overcome an acute psychiatric crisis. You may experience this issue as the result of an addiction, mental health condtion or both. This unit has 11 beds and is designed for short term stabilization.
The Hampton–Newport News Community Services Board does incredible work, and I want to take a moment to recognize several of the people there who go above and beyond every day. Lakeisha Jenkins, Jennifer Small, Anthony Howard, Jasmine Parker, Che Barnes, Janice Wilkes, and Lynn Fields all stand out for their professionalism, dedication, and compassion. Every time I’ve had the chance to interact with them, they’ve been conscientious, approachable, and committed to helping people get the resources and support they need. It’s not easy work, but they carry it with patience and care, and it shows in the way they treat people. In a community, having an organization like the CSB makes all the difference — but having staff members who really care about the people they serve is what takes it to the next level. These six individuals in particular deserve recognition for the outstanding job they do, and I’m grateful for the impact they’re making here in Hampton and Newport News.

Kind of a mixed bag here. On one hand, this place saved my life. I'll say it again. It. Saved. My. Life. When I first went here several years ago, I thought about suicide every day. I hated everyone and everything. I had no capacity for love, even for my family, who I saw as enemies. I was afraid to go near roads because of the overwhelming urge to step into traffic. I screamed at others so loudly I'd lose my voice, for the smallest of slights. I didn't go outside or leave the house if I could help it. I was facing homelessness because I could no longer handle the pressures of being in public, let alone working. My capacity for stress management was all but gone, and my propensity for violence and rage was always just below the surface, if I was lucky. My family was at a loss to help me, and finding help for my mental state had largely fallen to me to handle, which only compounded my agitation and hopelessness. This place was scary to go to at first, but I gave it a try anyway. The therapist I was assigned had not yet completed her training, and was more of a general behavioral therapist rather than the a specialist in borderline and depressive behavior. Still, she gave me someone to talk to. Just one hour a week and it made a ton of difference. Not only that, but when I hurt myself, she helped me find a psychiatrist to stabilize my brain chemistry. The therapist taught me about neuroplasticity and the ability to form new, positive habits, which I took to heart. I really admired the way she took to learning to skills in order to meet my needs, despite no obligation to do so whatsoever. In time, with her guidance, I was able to find hope again. I learned to be productive, and a year and a half later, I found a job. A year ago I found an apartment of my own. I still struggle, but now I have tools, and a specialist. I am no longer on welfare, and I can pick myself up when I fall down. Being discharged from the place was a triumph because I had learned so much and gained enough semblance of self to stand again, even if it was ultimately an emotional limp at the time. I went back a year later because after twenty four years of smoking pot, I found that I could not stop. It was really bothering me, so I asked for help from the place that had saved me so dearly not long before. I met an intake counselor who was clearly a pothead himself (one knows his own). When I told him about my addiction, he mocked me for it, telling me that vapes and weed weren't the same (tell that to my brain). Then he dismissed me. It's been two years and I still struggle with this. I quit booze and smoking cigs after 20 years, but I have no support for what was once considered a benign activity. One of the reasons I struggle is because, despite modern studies, I have no emotional or verbal support for my efforts. I am very reluctant to go back here and be mocked for my efforts again. So they helped, and they also sentenced me to a prolonged addiction due to one man's dismissive bias. Mixed bag.

Have been there thru all the B's in the beginning, have outlasted all the original workers there. Even though the staff seems to constantly change it is changing for the better. Only issue I have is the counselors, they come and go.. I'm not going to open up and spill my everything to only have to repeat it again a month or two later. I wish Dr. Orr would come back!! it's a mostly good place. not all the staff are my favorite, but that's going to happen anywhere. the new director was handed a pile of mess and is trying to make the best of it while making things better at the same time, and she's doing the best she can with what she was given from what I can tell. most of these patients just don't have.... patience. I've seen them corner staff members and scream at them for being held outside while a patient is having a medical emergency in the lobby. they only care about themselves, and there are no employees or security on drugs or smoking pot outside. I'm hopeful they can get to a place where they can have a really good crew that stays for a long time and works cohesively together. I'm glad this clinic is here for those of us that need it. the only staff member I truly have an issue with is a counselor (?) Sarah. I'm not sure what her problem is but she looks at us and treats us like we're just a bunch of junkies and nothing more. she is rude to clinic patients, she's not understanding to any situation, she lies to patients just so she doesn't have to do something, or even try, and the worst one: she also breaks HIPAA - her office is right off the lobby & if you're standing there, you can hear both sides of her entire Zoom call therapy appointments because she keeps her door wide open during these calls. I heard everything one young woman said in her appointment, very personal things. she should be ashamed of herself. the behavior I have seen from her is honestly unacceptable, and I don't believe this is the job for her. if you think addicts are beneath you, you shouldn't be working here Sarah.

I would highly recommend this facility to anyone who is struggling with addiction. For the first time in my life I have found a place with a staff that not only cares deeply for their patients, but also do not make their patients feel judged. They really do seem to care beyond any other facility I have been to, and I have been to several. I still have a long way to go, but just knowing that they see their patients as human beings who are in a lot of pain emotionally and mentally, and not just “junkies” , is what gives me the strength and courage to keep trying. The staff is absolutely amazing. I will forever be grateful for this , facility, the staff, and the doctors associated with this treatment program.

I don't know what y'all are complaining about. This isn't a place where they're going to miraculously cure your ailments. This is to either stabilize you or detox you, and make sure you're not a harm to yourself or others. Just because you're there does not mean you are going to be waited on hand and foot, nor do they get enough funding to have a 5 star meal for you everyday. This is not a Hotel. This is a tiny piece of the incredible amount of treatment you need if you're actually a patient here and it is going to be what you make of it. Treatment that you have to fully participate in yourself. Nothing or no one is going to be perfect. As a graduate of this program I am just here to refute the negative review left by a former beneficiary. Before you enter the program you are given in detail what you are signing up for. You are told from the beginning this is a Work Therapy program, and that you will have to attend Christian based spiritual classes and services. The resident managers have to deal with up to 100 something men so please don't listen to that one negative review about the program itself and about the program employees who's names should not be mentioned. Without God placing me here I would be on the street, dead in my addiction or worse. They do not force you to stay. The doors are meant to keep randoms out, not to keep someone unwilling to change their life, in. If you are struggling with addiction, or want to grow in your relationship with Christ, or even if you have no religion you are welcome here. But again, this is a work Therapy, Christian based program. Those who complain know exactly what they are signing up for . God bless.

Kara Zuege had these remarks about Ms. Elle. Ms. Elle has given me something I’ve been without for a very long time: true support and someone in my corner. I have nothing but amazing things to say about Barry Robinson. They helped my son at one of the hardest times of his life, after dealing with an unfortunate death of his best friend. He participated in the intensive outpatient program and actually enjoyed going 2-3 times a week. I felt like the treatment team really took the time to listen and understand the loss and other stressors and helped him cope. I have worked as a RN in the Pediatric ER/Mental Health field for over 20 years and now I have the pleasure of teaching our future RN's. I have been bringing Nursing Students to Barry Robinson weekly for the last few months and I am in awe of this facility. The grounds are emasculate and so peaceful. Today we spent so much time outside in the gorgeous weather socializing with the clients and staff. There were teen girls lying on blankets, in the grass reading a book, a few kicking a soccer ball, some just in the shade hanging with their staff talking about life. The teen boys are across the giant lawn some throwing a football, some listening to music and writing their own lyrics, while others are playing a card game with their staff in the shade. It resembles a college campus with a happy group of students between classes. The inside is so colorful and happy, as it should be. The staff is engaged and organized and treated so well by leadership, which is rare. This is why there is little to no turnover here. Hands down the most peaceful Mental Health Facility I've ever seen.

I'm a mom of a child who has now spent 10 months here. My child has severe behavioral issues and is not an easy child to deal with. She has severe ODD, has assaulted her own therapist twice while in the BRC, and smuggled in dangerous items. The BRC has been a blessing to help us figure out some of the root causes to my child's behavioral issues even when her heels were dug deep into the mud. 10 months ago my child would shut down for hours to days at a time before or after an attack, now she communicates freely (even if it's not healthy communication) and outwardly says whats on her mind. The BRC may not have been the best fit for my daughter with the level of care she needs, but they have certainly done all they can to provide everything they can for her and that's all I can ask right now. The progress we have seen has been slow but not every child moves at the same pace. The BRC isn't a magic center that works miracles for every person that walks into its doors, but they do care and they do set a foundation that has helped our family learn communication, boundaries, and how to interact with therapies. Jhane and Karen have been wonderful to interact with no matter how bad things get, and Ms. Moe in the Grissom Dorm has been an absolute lifeline for my daughter. My child is in the process of transferring to another facility but I firmly believe it's because of the help from the BRC that she's not transferring to a juvenile detention center instead. I genuinely believe this facility cares. They may not be super high tech with modern updates and a spa like setting, but they have sufficient resources to assist a variety of mental health issues impacting children of today and they have done everything they can to make sure they're providing the best care that they can for my daughter. Thank you Barry Robinson Center for your care and expertise during the hardest time of my daughters life.

My son spent nearly seven months at BRC and within just a few days of his return home, it has already made a world of difference for him and has helped him to learn how to cope with the issues that had been troubling him. My son's Clinical Therapist did a great job of working with him throughout his stay and was also extremely helpful to my wife and I with any questions or concerns that we had. She also made sure to actively incorporate us into our son's therapy which which really made us feel like we were part of the the process of helping our son, even though we were on the other side of the Atlantic Ocean while it was going on. I strongly endorse the Barry Robinson Center as well as our son's Clinical Therapist to any family who has children who need a high level of support for major behavioral health issues.

I don't understand these negative reviews. I came here in August for severe depression. I was seen immediately and referred to Herons Cove next door. The care I received there and at CIBS was outstanding. I have since began therapy here, and my therapist is caring, and very professional. The staff is always friendly and courteous. This place was a lifesaver. Keep up the good work.

My son has been going here for almost three years. The first time we went for intake and such he was so nervous and so forth . The intake person made him feel so at home and comfortable. His pyschiatrist is Dr Tillpia . Dr Tillipa truly cares about my son and seeing him get better ( he's bi polor , Adhad and depression). Even after at one point they couldn't help him.and he had to go see anothore doctor they still checked on him. MS AMANDA IS A GEM. It has taken me a minute to get my life back on track after being released from serving 5 years in the Virginia State Prison System. Trust me I never thought in a million years that 5 years in prison would be a part of my story. But it was part of Gods plan. You see God had to sit me down for 5 years to gain perspective on just how reckless my life had become. Before prison I was a womanizing, home wrecking drunkard. I had no respect towards anyone’s marriage vows, let alone my own. Because I was being selfish I chose to get involved with an old high school girlfriend that was married with 4 kids. Our relationship should have been left in 1995. To spare you the details. I made my usual selfish mistakes and caused so much anger in a woman who truly loved and tried to help me. In that anger she attacked me with fists, instead of responding in my usual humble blocking of fists, I met her with the same rage she had towards me. In the end of this mess I was sentenced to 45 years by a Virginia Judge (https://www.richmondbar.org/wp-content/uploads/2017/04/Chesterfield.pdf )with a 6 years (5 years/2 months with good time) active sentence to serve in the horribly dysfunctional Virginia Prison System. One of the few people that believes in second chances is Dr. Paul Hardy from Recovery 4 Recovery for Life. Because the Virginia DOC system is so corrupt and dysfunctional I didn’t have a home plan nor was my Interstate Compact Completed in time for me to return to Washington State. I honestly had no where to go once I was released! All I had to my name was $1200 on my books from a measly .45 cents/hour job in prison and what ever my family was able scrape up and send to me. Dr. Paul took a chance on having someone convicted of a violent crime (domestic battery) and offered me a second chance by allowing me to live at the recovery house. This opportunity allowed me the time to get back on my feet while I waited (2 months) for my Interstate Compact to be approved for Washington State. If it wasn’t for Recovery 4 Life, Dr. Paul, and the awesome owners (Stacie Gallinal) of Marco’s Pizza at 1544 Laskin Rd #212, Virginia Beach, VA 23451. I honestly could have been homeless and jobless. You see if you just listen to Gods plan. He will provide you all the help you need if you’re willing to accept it! I hope one day to share my testimony with the world. God Bless Chris Acheson
