About Ignatian Spirituality Project

The Ignatian Spirituality Project serves women and men who are in recovery from addiction and homelessness, although clients need to be in a transitional housing or homeless program rather than off the street. The program is rooted in Ignatian spirituality and designed for individuals seeking a deeper connection to God as they negotiate their journey of recovery. Clients must have at least three months of sobriety under their belt.

The programs include overnight retreats, ongoing spiritual direction, and follow-up days of reflection. The programs are offered free, so inability to pay is not an obstacle. The retreats vary in location, but they’re all offered in the Chicago area. Most retreats are held over weekends.

Peaceful, Supportive, Nondenominational Environment

The retreats take place in various spiritual centers and retreat houses throughout the Chicago area. The locations are specifically chosen based on space and environmental tranquility.

Although the programs are rooted in Ignatian spirituality, they’re non-denominational and open to people of all spiritualities and faiths, as well as those with no faith background. The retreats are gender specific. The retreats are typically held in spiritual centers near the lakefront area, public parks, and nature preserves.

Serving a Diverse Clientele

The peer led groups are based on the 12 Steps and welcome individuals from diverse backgrounds. Many are referred from recovery programs, partner agencies, and shelters. Participants have expressed their appreciation for finding support, hope, and a renewed sense of self esteem due to the retreats. They don’t offer medications and will take clients receiving medication-assisted treatment on a case-by-case basis.

Other individuals have mentioned that they found spiritual connection, felt heard, and built supportive community relationships. Some felt that the retreat experience inspired them to continue their recovery journey and maintain their sobriety.

Peer Led Support Groups

There is no formal counseling involved in the retreats, but rather an emphasis on fostering spiritual growth, connection, and support for individuals’ recovery journeys. The groups are peer led by volunteers with lived experience of addiction and homelessness. The leaders focus on renewal, dignity, and hope as you move forward in your recovery journey.

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

Participants in 12 step programs focus on emotional, psychological, and spiritual growth as the foundation for long-term sobriety. They engage in regular 12 step meetings, which are anonymous, free, and accessible day and night, year-round, in most communities. Participants also receive one-on-one mentoring from a self-selected sponsor. Though the 12 steps of recovery are based on spiritual principles, religious affiliation isn't required. Specialized formats are available, including programs for seniors, teens, and families.

Rehab aftercare programs provide a full continuum of care for clients who are exiting inpatient treatment. Though outpatient care is often considered an element of drug rehab aftercare, services typically continue for the remainder of the clients' life and long after formal treatment is completed. Clients work with their case managers and care team to formulate a customized portfolio of medical, mental health, and social service resources designed to evolve as the client's needs change.

Treatments

In Illinois, comprehensive substance abuse treatment programs are available for individuals struggling with substances and their mental health. These programs offer various levels of care, including outpatient, inpatient, and partial hospitalization options. Skilled clinicians utilize evidence-based therapies such as cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), and trauma-informed care to address substance abuse and improve your mental health. You'll also learn strategies to cope with relapse triggers and deal with stress.

Programs

Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.
