Twenty minutes.
That’s all it takes.
The health benefits that come from quitting smoking begin just 20 minutes after you quit.
That’s because the moment you stop, your body starts repairing damage caused by smoking. These repairs continue each day that you don’t smoke.
Pretty amazing, right?
Here’s the biology going on behind the scenes when you stop smoking:1
- 20 minutes after quitting: Your heart rate drops to a normal level.
- 12-24 hours after quitting: The carbon monoxide level in your blood returns to normal. And your risk of heart attack significantly drops.
- 2-3 weeks after quitting: Your lung function starts improving.
- 1-9 months after quitting: Coughing and shortness of breath decrease.
- 1 year after quitting: Your risk of coronary heart disease is now half that of a smoker’s.
And that’s just in the first year! As the non-smoking years add up, so do the benefits. Your risk of cancer, stroke, and heart disease continue to drop.
So how can you start reaping these benefits? Create a plan to quit, then tap into valuable supports to help you carry it out. You’ll find everything you need here.

Understanding Nicotine Addiction

Before you create your quit plan, it’s important to understand what’s going on in your body. Cigarettes contain nicotine, which is a stimulant drug. It is psychoactive, meaning it affects the mind.2 The nicotine alters your brain chemistry, producing pleasing effects in the brain that cause you to crave another cigarette. And the more you smoke, the more nicotine you need to feel the same effects.
Because of these effects, using any amount of tobacco can quickly lead to physical and psychological dependence on nicotine. That means, when you quit, your body and mind will react to the absence of nicotine. This is called withdrawal.
Withdrawal symptoms are common during the first few weeks after quitting.
Common withdrawal symptoms include:3
- Trouble sleeping
- Difficulty concentrating
- Feeling anxious or depressed
- Feeling irritable or grouchy
Withdrawal symptoms lessen with time and typically disappear entirely as you adjust to your new smoke-free life. If withdrawal symptoms are a concern, your healthcare provider may be able to prescribe quit-smoking medication to help with those.
How to Create a Plan to Quit Smoking
Once you’re ready to quit smoking, you need to create a quit plan. This personalized plan will help you stay on track. Your plan should include three key elements.
- Quit date. Choose a day in the next two weeks to start your quit process.
- Quit resources. Put supportive resources in place that will help you on your quitting journey.
- Quit method. Many methods have been developed for how to quit nicotine. Consider the various methods and choose what works best for you.
Quit Smoking Methods
- Cold turkey: If you decide to go “cold turkey,” you’ll choose a day to quit, then stop smoking entirely on that day, without the aid of nicotine replacement therapy.
- Nicotine replacement therapy (NRT): NRT is a family of quit-smoking medications. They provide a small dose of nicotine to satisfy cravings and reduce your urge to smoke. But they don’t contain the other dangerous chemicals that are in cigarettes. The goal of NRT is to slowly wean you off nicotine to break the addiction. NRT products include patches, gum, and lozenges, which can be purchased over the counter, and inhalers and nasal sprays, which require a prescription.
Quit Smoking Resources
- Counseling: Sessions with a counselor who specializes in behavioral health can help you on your journey to quit smoking. This expert can provide interventions such as motivational interviewing to help you stay on track. Group sessions may also be helpful for mutual support and encouragement.
- Apps: You can download a free SmokeFree.gov app to get 24/7 support on your phone. You can personalize the app tools based on your smoking patterns and quitting goals.
- Quit-lines: These CDC call and text lines offer free coaching over the phone to help you quit.
Keep in mind these options aren’t exclusive. Often, the best approach is a combination of methods that can provide comprehensive treatment and support.
Coping With Withdrawal
Nicotine withdrawal comes with two pieces of good news: it’s not life-threatening, and it’s predictable. You know it’s coming, so you can plan for it and successfully manage it.
- Explore alternative activities and distractions to replace smoking. Combine this with stress management techniques and relaxation exercises. Try these strategies:
- Avoid triggers: What makes you crave a cigarette? Find your triggers and make a plan to avoid them or manage them without smoking. This might involve changing your regular lunch spot or altering other habits. For example, if you usually smoke after drinking a cup of coffee in the morning, switch to orange juice or a smoothie so the coffee doesn’t trigger a craving.
- Distract yourself: If you can distract yourself for just 10 minutes when a craving hits, it will pass. Decide ahead of time what you will do when you crave a cigarette. You might go for a short walk, chew gum, or journal. Simple things can work great. For example, if you are used to smoking while you talk on the phone, make it a habit to doodle while you talk instead. (There are multiple doodle apps available for iPhone and Android.)
- Hang out in public. You can’t smoke in most public places, so head to the store, go to a movie, read at the library, or visit any other place that doesn’t allow smoking. If there are certain times of day that are hardest for you to resist the urge to smoke, start hanging out in public during those times.
- De-stress: Stress is a common trigger, so it’s good to know some relaxation techniques you can use when stress hits. Deep breathing exercises, yoga, massage, and listening to calming music are great techniques.
To manage specific withdrawal symptoms that may occur, try these tips:
- Trouble sleeping: Avoid caffeine later in the day, and if you’re using a nicotine patch, take it off at least an hour before bedtime. It’s also helpful to go to sleep and wake up at the same time every day, make sure your bedroom is quiet and dark, and don’t watch any type of screen in bed.
- Difficulty concentrating: This is common during your first smoke-free days. If possible, try to limit activities that require intense concentration.
- Feeling anxious or depressed: Mood changes are common after quitting smoking. Stay physically active and connect with other people to lift your mood. Stay busy, with a structured day that gets you out of the house.
- Feeling irritable or grouchy: Keep in mind this is normal. Remind yourself that this is temporary while your body is getting used to being nicotine-free. Take extra time to relax and de-stress. Take deep breaths, and remind yourself why you decided to quit.
Finding Support to Quit Smoking

This is not a solo journey. Social support is a key part of how to quit smoking cigarettes. Let family and friends know about your decision and ask for support. They can help by holding you accountable to your decision, offering a lifeline when you need to talk to someone, and providing company when you need to distract yourself during withdrawal.
Beyond family and friends, an entire community is available to provide support. Groups such as Nicotine Anonymous and online networks such as Reddit’s r/stopsmoking offer communities that can provide mutual support and encouragement.
Tap into these resources to hear other people’s success stories, struggles, and helpful tips they’ve learned from their own experiences. Find people you can relate to because they’re on the same quit-journey you are. These supports let you know you’re not alone and encourage you to press on when it gets tough.
Tips to Stay Smoke-Free for Good
Once you’ve started down your smoke-free path, you can remain a nonsmoker for life.
Use these recovery tips for how to quit nicotine for good.
- Create new habits. Change your routine so you make new habits that don’t involve smoking. For example, you may need to change how and where you take work breaks, or start chewing gum after meals instead of lighting a cigarette.
- Remain aware of triggers. Don’t set yourself up for temptation. If certain situations or places make you want a cigarette, avoid them if possible.
- Stay busy. Keep your mind and hands engaged. Choose tasks such as gardening, knitting, playing an instrument, cleaning, or painting.
- Stay active. Exercise serves several purposes. It helps fill your time, it helps you de-stress, and it helps keep your body healthy. You don’t have to join a gym or become a body builder. Simple walking is a great place to start.
- Reward yourself. You might be surprised at the extra money you have on hand when you quit smoking. On average, quitting smoking saves more than $2,000 a year. With the extra cash you don’t spend on cigarettes each week, you can treat yourself to a nice dinner out or a day at the spa. Or save up and take a well-deserved vacation! These rewards will help keep you motivated to stay smoke-free.
Start Enjoying the Smoke-Free Benefits
Ready to start reaping the benefits of quitting smoking? Create a quit-plan and put these supports in place:
- Family and friends
- Healthcare providers
- Online communities
- Apps
- Medications
- Counselors
With so many resources available, you can do this. Make the decision now to choose your quit date. Then tell someone about your decision. Congratulations in advance on becoming smoke-free!

I was given the ultimatum that if couldn’t get clean from alcohol and marijuana, then I would be removed from my children’s lives and have no chance of getting custody back. As an addict I just didn’t see me able to do this alone. I Google searched top rehabs in Oklahoma, and came across Boca Recovery. When I spoke to a recruiter they informed me that the facility was not in Oklahoma, but he told me not to panic. If I was ready, then all I had to worry about was making sure I was going to board on my scheduled flight. It seemed too good to be true, but sure enough they delivered and made sure I made it there safely. As soon as I stepped foot into the facility the staff treated me with the best care. Not only that, but the facility was very well maintained. You’re seen by a nurse the first day, and they set you up with everything you’ll need for the detox process. All therapist and case managers work together to build the best treatment plan that suits the patient/client. Not to mention the food they provide is amazing! Thanks to Boca recovery I have passed every UA since I’ve been out, and am able to be involved in my children’s lives again. Before arriving to Boca I didn’t see any of this being possible. Highly recommend to anyone struggling with addiction!

BOCA saved my life. It offered me safety, stability, and daily expectations that I needed desperately. From the first day of entering the program the techs were welcoming, understanding, and supportive which eased my anxiety and allowed me to relax. The clinical staff I worked with is amazing and they helped me begin to understand why I needed to be there and pushed me to see that I also deserved happiness and peace of mind. The community that was created during my stay is one that is with me for life. Lifelong friendships have been created and we stay in touch to this day which has been critical for my sense of belonging. Thank you to BOCA in the city of Bloomington, Indiana; you are the starting point to my path of recovery.

Sober life is the absolute BEST place to be if you are struggling. I went in 2020 and didn’t complete, and they welcomed me back with open arms march of this year and I went through completion. I have had the opportunity to stay in their network by getting care at SD wellness for psychiatry. Over this holiday week I had forgotten about my refill of a medication I need, I got in contact with Dan from alumni since I forgot what their hours were for thanksgiving and Black Friday, and by today (saturday) I have my refill! I got a personal call from Dr Amaro and got squared away. I’ve never found a medical group that listens, cares, and has better communication than here. I am so happy with this process and will always come back if I need it! Highly recommend!

It was a safe place during my most suicidal years. I really appreciated the ability to isolate in my room, unlike other facilities that lock the rooms during the day. | Bayside Marin Treatment Center is an addiction treatment center that offers drug and alcohol misuse recovery services to individuals living in the San Rafael, California, area. They have plenty to offer with a ton of therapy services and multiple levels of care, including detox services, residential treatment, outpatient programs (OP) and aftercare | Treatments Programs Payment Options | Bayside Marin is an excellent treatment center.
At first, I didn’t want to go here, mainly because of negative reviews and hearsay from an acquaintance, and corporate ownership.
But I quickly changed my mind. I came here devestated by a very traumatic year of my life, in as much of a mental health crisis as I was in a substance one. Throughout the length of my stay, I was treated with understanding, patience and compassion.
The bulk of their program is cookie cutter evidence based, but high quality.
The employees at Bayside really care about their work, and their clients, and because of this it didn’t have a corporate feel, even though they’re owned by Acadia.
What made this stay extra special for me was the therapy and one on one conversations I had with staff. I had the honor and privilege of working with the best therapist I’ve ever seen. When there’s a true match with therapy it can be magical, spiritual. I have transformed into a better version of myself because of the one on one work with my therapist, whose intelligence, wit, patience, and compassion helped me to rise above and shine, despite facing some extremely challenging triggers in residential this time. When you can’t fully care about yourself, sometimes you can borrow someone else’s faith in you until you’re able to care about yourself a little more. By the end of my stay, I felt more confident and centered than I had in a long time.
I also wanted to say, the tech supervisor helped guide me psychologically and spiritually as I faced various challenges at Bayside, and helped revive my interest in spirituality, meditation and awakening.
I had the best spiritual and psychological support I could have asked for, which I thought would be impossible after being at Olympia House in 2022. (Both are good rehabs with their unique strengths and weaknesses. I learned a lot at both, but they’re not directly comparable, OH is a little more unique in terms of approach and programming. Bayside was extra meaningful because of the particular therapist I worked with, the behavioral technician supervisor I mentioned and the particular clients I bonded with.
They actually listen to client feedback and I watched them make numerous improvements over the three months I was there.
With that said, there is room for further improvement. Clients are shuffled over to the main campus from detox with very little explanation of where to go and when, which leaves freshly detoxed clients confused, angry, and feeling disrespected. I’ve been told they’re working on fixing this problem.
Scheduling glitches do happen, but that’s true of any medium or large rehab. They do their best. And also, sometimes communication can be a little complicated between departments. No place is perfect.
Gorgeous campus. Food was great. I was told this was a rehab for rich people who valued aesthetics over content, but that’s not what I found here. They have some incredible talent working for them and client socioeconomic backgrounds are mixed.
Last. I would encourage people, strongly, to ask to change their therapist if the initial assignment isn’t a match. I did, and it made all the difference in my stay.

Unlike many places I have been to instead of boring you to death, they actually make recovery fun, which in my experience has a lot to do with being able to succeed in recovery. I have recommended multiple friends and family members to go here when they are struggling with addiction and will continue to recommend Steps to Recovery to anyone who asks how i got clean and remained clean. I recently graduated from STR. I was in programming between May to September, originally PHP and then in the IOP mental health program. While in PHP I was in housing as well. There are family sessions offered too, but I did not utilize that service while at STR.While the house I was at was not perfect, administration tried their best to accommodate every concern clients had with the house. It was overall a clean and safe environment to live in. If there are any concerns advocate for yourself and ask a tech to call a house meeting if it is an interpersonal issue within the house. If you have a different issue communicate that to the director and it will most likely be handled promptly. The PHP (partial hospitalization program) for mental health is six days a week, 9am-1:30 Monday-Friday and 9am-12pm Saturdays. The program changes as needs change. When I first began there process groups were three hours long, but when I left they were two hours long with an additional hour of psych ed. While the day may seem long, everyone gets a break between noon and 12:30. Afternoon there are different types of therapy everyday like art therapy, DBT, CBT.IOP (intensive outpatient program) is only 9am-12pm three days a week, usually Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday. The director is accommodating though so if for any reason you need to not go on a Monday, you could always go on a Saturday if you advocate for yourself. You ll have one individual session a week with one of the clinicians. I had Ashley and she is phenomenal. While the staff really do care about the clients, Ashley definitely cares about clients and it shows in her work. You ll also have a session with either Dr. Newman or Monique once a week to go over medications they are both amazing!STR is shaped not just by the staff, but clientele too. I have reinforced and grew my support system while being at STR. And while I was in the mental health program, I have substance use disorder as well, I d recommend Steps to recovery struggling with their mental health or substance use. It may take a couple of weeks to really settle into the program, but continue to do the work since you are worth it and advocate for yourself if something isn t working for you.STR is also a great facility if you re part of the LGBTQ+ community. The staff here are not just accepting, but affirming. There is an optional LGBTQ+ group once a week with Christian, which was my favorite part of the week.

The staff were all very nice for the most part. I had some great moments. STR helped me out while I was in a rough position and for that I am grateful. I appreciate that they go out of there way to help people with extenuating circumstances. There are a lot of personalities and that can frustrating. However, I would recommend this place to a friend in need. Overall, it s a good place.

I’ve been through my share of treatment centers, and I’ve even worked in the field. I’ve seen programs that talk the talk but don’t follow through. Bright Futures is different. It’s the most well-structured, consistent program I’ve been a part of. No place is flawless, and sure, there’s always room to grow but overall, this is a place that works if you let it.
What truly makes Bright Futures stand out isn’t just the system, it’s the people. As much as it pains me to say it… Uncle Al! 😝 As no human is perfect I can genuinely say this man really cares I think people fail to understand the role of this man he is the backbone of this company. I will vouch for this man and say if you have something pressing he WILL make it happen! (Within means obviously). I can honestly say it wouldn’t be BF without Al. Carolina Ruiz, Randy Robinson, Trish Corcoran man I have no words. Three people haven’t touched me like they did ever in the better part of 30 years of me trying to get this thing. They each made a lasting impact on me. This place wouldn’t be what it is without them. They challenged me, pushed me, and didn’t let me slip through the cracks. They don’t just see you they make you know you are not only heard but seen. When you feel like the world 🌎 doesn’t. Whether they realize it or not, they helped me see myself differently. I’ll eternally be grateful to these 3 people. (But shout out to everyone)
If you’re looking for a place where structure meets real support and where the right people will call you on your BS while still having your back—Bright Futures is it.

I am so grateful for my 6 weeks at The Center. It was both shocking and relieving to see the wide range of different kinds of people that come into there, as well as the wide range of issues that bring them in.The days are full and it can feel like a lot, but it truly is what you make of it. Apply yourself and you will get so much great information, as well as inspiration from other clients and genuine care from your individual team. It is incredibly evident how much these people love their jobs.It wasn t my idea to go there, but I m so glad that I did choose to make the leap. I had basically come to accept that I was just stuck due to depression, anxiety, shame, fear, etc, but I was able to build the foundation for reconnecting to my true self. Looking forward to life again. Certainly still work to do, but it was definitely the jump-start I needed.Loved my whole team, and all the therapists who led groups, but special shoutout to my psych, Austin, for being so diligent with my medication changes, and to my lead therapist, Virgil, for being the absolute man and helping me look at myself and life differently. All the love to The Center and anyone who is considering going there
