The research team brought together scientists and professionals to better understand addiction in rural America and identify ways to improve access to rehab and treatment services in these underserved areas.
New Funding Opportunities for RDARC
In 2024, the RDARC received a renewal grant of $11.6 million. The sum allows research to continue for another five years to broaden and deepen its focus.
While research into addictions in rural America enters its second phase of study, its research has already enhanced programs throughout the university’s hometown of Lincoln.
When you’re ready to seek help, you can find the best rehab centers in Lincoln to get started.
How Rural Addiction Research Impacts Rehab Access
Getting reliable insights in research can be easier with large sample populations. For this reason, addiction research is far easier to conduct in urban areas, where many more people reside within the research team’s reach. RDARC’s program is unique because it focuses on rural areas, where access to rehab and addiction treatment is often limited by geography and resources.
RDARC staff has noted those living in rural communities typically have far fewer specialty programs available to them, such as rehabs for working professionals or luxury treatment centers.
Many individuals must travel long distances to reach a rehab program or treatment facility. Plus, funding shortages abound in areas where only a small number of people occupy a large region. Rural communities also tend to have higher rates of stigmatization around addiction.
Excited to Make a Difference
The research center has a number of projects running concurrently. Some researchers examine prenatal exposure to drugs and alcohol among women, as well as the effects thereof on the development of a person’s senses and socialization later in life.
Others study therapies for alcohol and drug addiction, including how treatments may improve outcomes for individuals affected by prenatal opioid exposure.
Rick Bevins, RDARC director, says that he and others at Rural Drug Addiction Research Center are making new discoveries about this very different addiction landscape.
The center currently has open applications for researchers and project proposals and continues to help teams access the latest software, structure surveys, find volunteers and implement their projects.
While RDARC focuses on rural America, rehab and addiction treatment services are available nationwide. Search rehab.com’s directory to access top rehab treatment centers and programs. You can also call
