About Sea Mar Bellevue Medical Clinic

Sea Mar Bellevue Medical Clinic is an integrated community focused clinic serving residents of King County in Bellevue, Washington. Their services range from primary medical care and family medicine and planning to chronic disease management and occupational therapy. They also offer substance use disorder treatment using clinically proven techniques to help residents overcome unhealthy alcohol/drug dependency. They deliver personalized and culturally competent care targeting the medically indigent or underserved residents of King County.

You can count on them for quality care even if your family lacks the resources. They accept Medicaid alongside many private insurances and offer sliding fee scale discounts for the uninsured. This lets you pay for care based on income and ensures you won’t be denied services due to your inability to pay. This reflects Sea Mar Healthcare Network’s mission to make healthcare accessible to everyone.

Medication Supported Recovery for Opioid Addiction

Bellevue Medical Clinic helps King County residents overcome opioid dependency through medication assisted treatment or MAT. This clinically proven technique combines meds approved by the FDA with behavioral therapy to help you achieve lasting abstinence. The clinic has Suboxone and Vivitrol available for their MAT program.

You can be prescribed any of these meds depending on your unique condition via personalized care planning. When taken as prescribed, the meds curb physiological cravings and eliminate painful withdrawal symptoms.

You can then attend their specialized MAT therapy group to address underlying psychological issues that may hinder your recovery. You’ll also gain practical coping tools to help you manage life challenges without relapsing. It’s all about helping you regain full control of your life. Their wraparound services may include connection to community or county services that ensure sustained recovery and stability as you move forward. This may include accessible permanent housing, job opportunities and educational programs.

Preventive Care and Counseling

Bellevue Medical Clinic offers HIV and STD/STI testing. This can be important if you inject IV drugs as sharing needles and other paraphernalia exposes you to these infections. Testing ensures early detection and subsequent treatment while preventing community spread.

The clinic accepts walk-ins for testing. They may provide counseling and therapy or offer referrals if you’re already diagnosed with these infections. The clinic also provides health education and prenatal care for expecting moms in recovery. Many other preventive health exams are accessible here as well.

Other Forms of Payment

Private insurance refers to any kind of healthcare coverage that isn't from the state or federal government. This includes individual and family plans offered by an employer or purchased from the Insurance Marketplace. Every plan will have different requirements and out of pocket costs so be sure to get the full details before you start treatment.

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Financial aid can take many forms. Centers may have grants or scholarships available to clients who meet eligibility requirements. Programs that receive SAMHSA grants may have financial aid available for those who need treatment as well. Grants and scholarships can help you pai for treatment without having to repay.

Sliding scale payments are based on a client's income and family size. The goal is to make treatment affordable to everyone. By taking these factors into account, addiction recovery care providers help ensure that your treatment does not become a financial burden to you or your family, eliminating one barrier to care.

Medicare is a federal program that provides health insurance for those 65 and older. It also serves people under 65 with chronic and disabling health challenges. To use Medicare for addiction treatment you need to find a program that accepts Medicare and is in network with your plan. Out of pocket costs and preauthorization requirements vary, so always check with your provider.

Medicaid is a state based program that helps lower-income individuals and families pay for healthcare. Medicaid covers addiction treatment so those enrolled can use their coverage to pay for rehab. When a program accepts Medicaid the client often pays very little or nothing out of their own pocket.

Military members, veterans, and eligible dependents have access to specific insurance programs that help them get the care they need. TRICARE and VA insurance can help you access low cost or no cost addiction and mental health treatment. Programs that accept military insurance often have targeted treatment focused on the unique challenges military members, veterans, and their families face.

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

outpatient iconOutpatient
Outpatient Programs (OP) are for those seeking mental rehab or drug rehab, but who also stay at home every night. The main difference between outpatient treatment (OP) and intensive outpatient treatment (IOP) lies in the amount of hours the patient spends at the facility. Most of the time an outpatient program is designed for someone who has completed an inpatient stay and is looking to continue their growth in recovery. Outpatient is not meant to be the starting point, it is commonly referred to as aftercare.
aftercare iconAftercare Support
Rehab aftercare programs support clients as they focus on maintaining their sobriety after intensive (often inpatient) treatment. These programs adhere to a model of life-long recovery, addressing addiction disease as a chronic, relapsing condition. Rehab aftercare services vary widely based on the specific and evolving needs of the client, but often include peer coaching, relapse prevention support, and 12 step program induction. Clients, case managers, and care teams typically collaborate on long-term care plans.

Treatments

The goal of treatment for alcoholism is abstinence. Those with poor social support, poor motivation, or psychiatric disorders tend to relapse within a few years of treatment. For these people, success is measured by longer periods of abstinence, reduced use of alcohol, better health, and improved social functioning. Recovery and Maintenance are usually based on 12 step programs and AA meetings.

Effective drug rehab in Washington integrates care for the whole person, offering comprehensive solutions to addiction. Treatment methods address mental, physical, and relational aspects of substance abuse.

Many of those suffering from addiction also suffer from mental or emotional illnesses like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, or anxiety disorders. Rehab and other substance abuse facilities treating those with a dual diagnosis or co-occurring disorder administer psychiatric treatment to address the person's mental health issue in addition to drug and alcohol rehabilitation.

A combined mental health and substance abuse rehab has the staff and resources available to handle individuals with both mental health and substance abuse issues. It can be challenging to determine where a specific symptom stems from (a mental health issue or an issue related to substance abuse), so mental health and substance abuse professionals are helpful in detangling symptoms and keeping treatment on track.

Opioid rehabs specialize in supporting those recovering from opioid addiction. They treat those suffering from addiction to illegal opioids like heroin, as well as prescription drugs like oxycodone. These centers typically combine both physical as well as mental and emotional support to help stop addiction. Physical support often includes medical detox and subsequent medical support (including medication), and mental support includes in-depth therapy to address the underlying causes of addiction.

Programs

adult-program thumbnail image
Adult Program
Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.
young-adult-program thumbnail image
Young Adult Program
Young adulthood can be an exciting, yet difficult, time of transition. Individuals in their late teens to mid-20s face unique stressors related to school, jobs, families, and social circles, which can lead to a rise in substance use. Rehab centers with dedicated young adult programs will include activities and amenities that cater to this age group, with an emphasis on specialized counseling, peer socialization, and ongoing aftercare.

Clinical Services

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a therapy modality that focuses on the relationship between one's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It is used to establish and allow for healthy responses to thoughts and feelings (instead of unhealthy responses, like using drugs or alcohol). CBT has been proven effective for recovering addicts of all kinds, and is used to strengthen a patient's own self-awareness and ability to self-regulate. CBT allows individuals to monitor their own emotional state, become more adept at communicating with others, and manage stress without needing to engage in substance abuse.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a modified form of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), a treatment designed to help people understand and ultimately affect the relationship between their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. DBT is often used for individuals who struggle with self-harm behaviors, such as self-mutilation (cutting) and suicidal thoughts, urges, or attempts. It has been proven clinically effective for those who struggle with out-of-control emotions and mental health illnesses like Borderline Personality Disorder.

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

Motivational Interviewing (MI) is a clinical approach to helping people with substance abuse issues and other conditions shift behavior in positive ways. It is more goal-oriented than traditional psychotherapy, as MI counselors directly attempt to get clients to consider making behavioral change (rather than wait for them to come to conclusions themselves). Its primary purpose is to resolve ambivalence and help clients become able to make healthy choices freely.

Trauma therapy addresses traumatic incidents from a client's past that are likely affecting their present-day experience. Trauma is often one of the primary triggers and potential causes of addiction, and can stem from child sexual abuse, domestic violence, having a parent with a mental illness, losing one or both parents at a young age, teenage or adult sexual assault, or any number of other factors. The purpose of trauma therapy is to allow a patient to process trauma and move through and past it, with the help of trained and compassionate mental health professionals.

Whether a marriage or other committed relationship, an intimate partnership is one of the most important aspects of a person's life. Drug and alcohol addiction affects both members of a couple in deep and meaningful ways, as does rehab and recovery. Couples therapy and other couples-focused treatment programs are significant parts of exploring triggers of addiction, as well as learning how to build healthy patterns to support ongoing sobriety.

Research clearly demonstrates that recovery is far more successful and sustainable when loved ones like family members participate in rehab and substance abuse treatment. Genetic factors may be at play when it comes to drug and alcohol addiction, as well as mental health issues. Family dynamics often play a critical role in addiction triggers, and if properly educated, family members can be a strong source of support when it comes to rehabilitation.

Life skills trainings involve all the skills a person must have in order to function successfully in the world. These include time management, career guidance, money management, and effective communication. Truly successful addiction recovery is based on the ability to not only live substance-free, but to thrive. Life skills teaches the practical necessities of functioning in society, which sets clients up for success in life, and therefore sobriety.

Nutrition therapy, aka medical nutrition therapy (MNT), is a way of treating physical, emotional, and medical conditions through diet. Specific dietary plans are designed by professional nutritionists or registered dietitians, and patients follow them in order to positively affect their physical and mental health.

Experiential therapy in Washington is based on Gestalt therapy. This method emphasizes experiences over language and is founded on the philosophy that clients can't just think their way to recovery. They must feel and do. Therefore, experiential therapy supplements talk therapy with experiences, such as equine therapy, art, music, or adventure courses.

I'm deeply thankful with Sea Mar Bellevue for their professional assessment. I had gone to many places searching for help, but it wasn't until I found them that I felt safe. Thank you for such a positive experience.

HORRIBLE, unorganized, and rude. I called to make a first time appointment and they said they’d call me back. I never got a call back so I called again and they said I can only get an appointment by calling Mondays at 9am. I call Monday at 9am and they tell me I have to come in person to fill out paperwork. I come in person and they tell me the only way to get an appointment is by calling Monday at 9am. I called again and they had me leave my number and said they would call me back. It’s been a total of 4 weeks of trying to get care and they’re not even polite.

Incompetent administrators, I asked if I could take blood, they said I could, I arrived in 10 minutes, they said they couldn't take it, there was no nurse.

For the behavioral health department: I’ve been coming here for about 8 years. In that time I had three therapists because they don’t stay here long. The first one was fine, she really did try and she cared, but she just wasn’t very good. Maybe if you have minor problems or have never been to therapy before. The second one was amazing, and I got a lot from my time with her, but she eventually left too. The most recent one I had, Valentina, was awful; she didn’t know what she was doing. Her approach was very entry-level and formulaic. She just sat there “active listening” and had little to nothing to contribute. She wasn’t even warm or supportive. My dad died and I had trouble getting myself together enough to make appointments. When I finally collected myself enough to schedule, I found out Valentina had “closed my case”. This meant that, without any warning or being notified, she had ended my access to services at SeaMar, who I’ve been with since about 2016. SeaMar will only allow you to see their psychiatrist (Hoffman is wonderful by the way) and therefore be prescribed medication if you agree to see specifically *their* therapists regularly (even though I see an external therapist weekly). So when she closed my case, she made me unable to see my psychiatrist, who will now no longer prescribe my *very important* medications, which run out in about 3 days. Now, in the midst of an emotional breakdown, I no longer have access to my medications or any therapeutic services. I know that SeaMar has always been poorly reviewed but for those past 8 years I would have given it a solid 3.5 stars. But after this experience it’s barely a 1. When I needed care the most, in that whole 8 years, Valentina made the decision to cut me off. Do not invest your time or money or energy into receiving services here. If it’s your only option then at least don’t let them assign you Valentina. I got bad vibes from her right off the bat and I ended up being right. She should not be given the responsibility of providing care to patients if she can’t support them.

This place is a joke. They charged me $300 for the doctor to not even look at me and tell me I needed an eye doctor. So much for helping the lower income population.

I’ve been going to this clinic for years since I was a teenager because that was what I had known. I stopped going here in the last few years because I’ve developed severe anxiety after my last few attempts to seek medical care here and their lack of proactiveness. I remember on one occasion, a nurse in training was withdrawing my blood, but she could not find a vein—even though my skin is pale and the vein was so very easy to see! She stabbed me multiple times and it felt like the needle was being dug around in my arm. It was so painful!! I told the doctor about it during that visit and asked for someone else to withdraw my blood, but was told the nurse needed training. This did not make me comfortable at all. On several other occasions after that, I had tried to seek assistance for behavioral health. I filled out the required survey and was told there would be at least a 2-6 month waiting period because they had so many other patients also seeking behavioral health (because of the pandemic). Well, 6 months passed and I did not get contacted. It has now been 3 years since I applied for it, TWICE, because the first time they lost my survey application. I hate this place. I hate that it’s one of the few places available for those on low income/Medicaid/Medicare in the area. I hate that my experiences here have led to my anxiety about medical places in general.
