Stormont Vail has been garnishing my wages/bank account since my stay in 2016, 25% of my wages and draining my bank account on top of that, which is legal due to HB2608- a law that was passed after Stormont Vail's debt collectors lost the Stormont Vail v. Sievers case in the state supreme court. Despite this, due to interest, I haven't dented the principal. This case is available to view online and I recommend doing so so you can see what kind of facility this is. I have spoken to a patient representative in the past who was horrified by my story and promised to call me back- but never did. This is a financially predatory facility which believes and has argued in court that if a patient makes below the poverty level, they should still be allowed to completely drain their bank account monthly.Stormont Vail, I've met with Newman Hospital administration several times about this, and we have made a lot of progress since the Kansas Reflector article. But so far I have been unable to secure a meeting with Stormont Vail leadership. Let's change this.

Other Forms of Payment

Medicare is a federal program that provides health insurance for those 65 and older. It also serves people under 65 with chronic and disabling health challenges. To use Medicare for addiction treatment you need to find a program that accepts Medicare and is in network with your plan. Out of pocket costs and preauthorization requirements vary, so always check with your provider.

Medicaid is a state based program that helps lower-income individuals and families pay for healthcare. Medicaid covers addiction treatment so those enrolled can use their coverage to pay for rehab. When a program accepts Medicaid the client often pays very little or nothing out of their own pocket.

Private insurance refers to any kind of healthcare coverage that isn't from the state or federal government. This includes individual and family plans offered by an employer or purchased from the Insurance Marketplace. Every plan will have different requirements and out of pocket costs so be sure to get the full details before you start treatment.

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Sliding scale payments are based on a client's income and family size. The goal is to make treatment affordable to everyone. By taking these factors into account, addiction recovery care providers help ensure that your treatment does not become a financial burden to you or your family, eliminating one barrier to care.

Military members, veterans, and eligible dependents have access to specific insurance programs that help them get the care they need. TRICARE and VA insurance can help you access low cost or no cost addiction and mental health treatment. Programs that accept military insurance often have targeted treatment focused on the unique challenges military members, veterans, and their families face.

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

partial-hospitalization iconPartial Hospitalization Program
A partial hospitalization program (PHP) is a short-term form of intensive rehab, usually for those with acute symptoms that are hard to manage but don’t require 24-hour care. PHPs have structured programming (i.e. individual and/or group therapy), and usually meet 3-5 days a week for around 6 hours (i.e. 9am-3m). Some PHPs are residential (patients sleep on site) and some are not, so patients sleep at home. PHPs can last from 1-6 months, and some offer transportation and meals.
outpatient iconOutpatient
Outpatient Programs (OP) are for those seeking mental rehab or drug rehab, but who also stay at home every night. The main difference between outpatient treatment (OP) and intensive outpatient treatment (IOP) lies in the amount of hours the patient spends at the facility. Most of the time an outpatient program is designed for someone who has completed an inpatient stay and is looking to continue their growth in recovery. Outpatient is not meant to be the starting point, it is commonly referred to as aftercare.
inpatient iconInpatient
Inpatient rehab offers intensive treatment and typically include round-the-clock clinical care. Inpatient treatment is designed primarily for clients exiting detox, those in early recovery, and those at an increased risk of relapse. Inpatient programs generally involve multiple addiction counseling sessions per week, which may include individual, group, and family counseling. Many inpatient rehabs also offer recovery-focused life skills training and evidence-based holistic therapies, such as meditation, massage, yoga, equine therapy, and experiential therapy.
12-step icon12-Step
12 step programs feature peer coaching and spiritual development to support participants' sustained sobriety. Most programs are non-denominational and religious affiliation isn't required. Participants engage in regular 12 step meetings, which are open to the public, anonymous, and free. Meetings can be accessed night and day in most communities. Self-selected sponsors provide one-on-one mentoring as participants work through the 12 steps, which foster healing, understanding, accountability, and acceptance.
aftercare iconAftercare Support
Clients in a rehab aftercare program typically have completed intensive inpatient treatment but may be receiving outpatient care. Many have concluded outpatient treatment as well and are in the maintenance phase of their recovery. Rehab aftercare services are designed to provide a full continuum of care as clients apply their recovery skills at home, in the workplace, and in the community. Clients typically receive peer coaching, career counseling, and 12 step recovery program induction, among other services.

Treatments

Mental health rehabs focus on helping individuals recover from mental illnesses like bipolar disorder, clinical depression, anxiety disorders, schizophrenia, and more. Mental health professionals at these facilities are trained to understand and treat mental health issues, both in individual and group settings.

Programs

adult-program thumbnail image
Adult Program
Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.
young-adult-program thumbnail image
Young Adult Program
Young adulthood can be an exciting, yet difficult, time of transition. Individuals in their late teens to mid-20s face unique stressors related to school, jobs, families, and social circles, which can lead to a rise in substance use. Rehab centers with dedicated young adult programs will include activities and amenities that cater to this age group, with an emphasis on specialized counseling, peer socialization, and ongoing aftercare.
lgbtq-program thumbnail image
LGBTQ Program
Recovery is most successful when clients feel accepted and validated by their peers and treatment providers. Facilities that offer LGBTQ-inclusive programming are committed to creating a safe space where everyone can grow and recover without fear of judgment or discrimination. They will have dedicated policies in place to create a safe and supportive environment that fosters free expression.
military-program thumbnail image
Military Program
Serving in the military is both mentally and physically challenging, and can result in trauma that persists even after combat ends. Military programs are tailored to the specific and often complex needs of active duty personnel, veterans, and military families. Clients often access these programs through the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA).

Clinical Services

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a therapy modality that focuses on the relationship between one's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It is used to establish and allow for healthy responses to thoughts and feelings (instead of unhealthy responses, like using drugs or alcohol). CBT has been proven effective for recovering addicts of all kinds, and is used to strengthen a patient's own self-awareness and ability to self-regulate. CBT allows individuals to monitor their own emotional state, become more adept at communicating with others, and manage stress without needing to engage in substance abuse.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a modified form of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), a treatment designed to help people understand and ultimately affect the relationship between their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. DBT is often used for individuals who struggle with self-harm behaviors, such as self-mutilation (cutting) and suicidal thoughts, urges, or attempts. It has been proven clinically effective for those who struggle with out-of-control emotions and mental health illnesses like Borderline Personality Disorder.

ECT is a form of treatment in which controlled electric currents are passed through the brain, sometimes causing short seizures. Treatments are done under general anesthesia. ECT appears to change brain chemistry for the better, and has been shown to provide fast and sometimes dramatic improvements in severe mental health conditions that can exist alongside addiction, including depression, bipolar disorder, psychosis, and suicidality. ECT is also often used by those who prefer it to taking medication.

Research clearly demonstrates that recovery is far more successful and sustainable when loved ones like family members participate in rehab and substance abuse treatment. Genetic factors may be at play when it comes to drug and alcohol addiction, as well as mental health issues. Family dynamics often play a critical role in addiction triggers, and if properly educated, family members can be a strong source of support when it comes to rehabilitation.

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

Trauma therapy addresses traumatic incidents from a client's past that are likely affecting their present-day experience. Trauma is often one of the primary triggers and potential causes of addiction, and can stem from child sexual abuse, domestic violence, having a parent with a mental illness, losing one or both parents at a young age, teenage or adult sexual assault, or any number of other factors. The purpose of trauma therapy is to allow a patient to process trauma and move through and past it, with the help of trained and compassionate mental health professionals.

Don't go to Stormont Vail Behavioral Health if you're an adult and think you may have ADHD. I saw APRN Angel Patterson-Tetuan, and when I told her that I think I've gone with undiagnosed ADHD for my 30 years of life, she immediately became aggressive and went out of her way to prove me *wrong*, rather than trying to genuinely help me come to a proper conclusion. She asked me the same old questions: Do you get out of your seat when you're not supposed to, do you interrupt people constantly, do you spend money impulsively? To which I answered "no", because I'm an adult woman with a modicum of self-control in public settings. I was focused on relating symptoms from my childhood, because for a proper ADHD diagnosis you're supposed to prove you've experienced it since at least age 12. So I might not have done a good enough job explaining how it affects me in my daily life (which is debilitating, hence trying to get help for it) but if she was a better provider she should have been able to ask me questions that would have helped uncover that. She told me I'm "just a bad procrastinator" and wanted to treat me for the severe anxiety I was experiencing at the time of my appointment. She said stimulants increase anxiety and that anxiety is never a result of ADHD, but that's simply not true -- newer research has shown that many people develop anxiety in response to the difficulties untreated ADHD causes, and treating the ADHD symptoms can reduce that anxiety, especially in people who have been masking their symptoms for years. I've been reflecting on my visit a lot in the last month, and I realized my severe anxiety only started when I *made* the appointment 3 months ago, which she would have been able to figure out if she was asking questions to help me, rather than just prove me wrong. The whole experience was a waste of my time (3 months of waiting for the appointment) and money, and left me doubting Stormont Vail's whole Behavioral Health Dept. If you think you have ADHD and don't present the same way as a 10 year old boy would, then DO NOT go here. Find a professional who specializes in it, because Nurse Angel definitely doesn't, and she'll have made up her mind about you after the first words have left your mouth.

Response from the ownerInvalid relative date format:

I am pregnant in my first trimester and was recommended by my OBGYN to see an urgent therapist here at the Stormont Vail behavioral health. I looked at my after visit summary in MyChart. I saw Staci Jordan at 10am on November 19th, she questioned my OCD and said in the notes that I showed up to the appointment with "poor hygiene" and appeared "unkept and disheveled" because of my facial piercings. I have been in services for 10 years since I was a teenager, and I have never ever been judged on my appearance. I even told her I've been experiencing depression related to my pregnancy. I feel embarrassed and humiliated. I have never been treated this way by a therapist. She also said I was a questionable historian because I didn't report being abused when I lived with my dad but I'm talking about it now since I don't live with him anymore.

Response from the ownerInvalid relative date format:
Summer, thank you for sharing your experience at our Behavioral Health Center. Your feelings are valid, and we sincerely apologize for making you feel judged and embarrassed, especially during such an important time as your pregnancy. We strive to create a supportive environment for everyone who visits us, and this behavior does not reflect our values. We encourage you to call our Patient Experience team at (785) 354-6277 so we can properly address your concerns with the attention and care you deserve.
