Will a 12-Step Program Work for You?

“It works if you work it” is a common phrase among 12-step program members. In other words, how much you get out of the program depends on your effort to work through the steps, engage in self-improvement, and participate in meetings.

Studies show that consistently attending meetings multiple times a week leads to better substance abuse outcomes.² If an individual is willing to “work it,” 12-step programs can provide an essential source of community and peer support.

What is a 12-Step Program?

A 12-step program is a plan that emphasizes the importance of accepting addiction as a disease that can be treated but never fully eliminated. The overarching goal is to provide participants the necessary supports to abstain from substances.

These supports include a sense of community acceptance and accountability that allow members to transition into long-term recovery. The groups involve a community of peers and a set of 12 guiding principles or “steps” to be followed in the recovery process. Groups offer free membership and are often run by members without the involvement of healthcare professionals.

Sponsors

The 12-step model places a strong emphasis on helping other members achieve and maintain sobriety. New members are encouraged to connect with a sponsor. This is a senior member of the 12-step program, who has been in recovery for at least one year. Sponsors are available to help people navigate the ins and outs of 12-step membership, answer questions, provide support while working on the 12-steps, and offer accountability.

What Are the 12 Steps?

The basic premise of the 12-step approach is that people can help each other achieve and maintain abstinence from substances. But first, they must admit they are powerless and surrender to a higher power, attend meetings, and work through the twelve steps.

Believe that a higher power can restore sanity.

Be ready for the higher power to remove these moral shortcomings.

Do I Have to Be Religious to Attend?

It’s important to note that one’s chosen higher power doesn’t have to be the Christian concept of God. Instead, it can refer to one’s own spiritual beliefs, the universe, or even the 12-step group as a whole.

What to Expect at 12-Step Meetings

Location

12-step meetings are usually held in community centers, churches, inpatient or outpatient addiction treatment facilities, or sober living homes.

Cost

Meetings are free to attend; however, members may be asked to contribute a small donation to help cover the cost of coffee or other snacks.

Format/Agenda

Depending on the size of the meeting, it’s common for members to sit in a circle. At the start of the meeting, members go around the circle (or room) sharing their names, along with acknowledgment of their addiction or what brings them to the meeting. Newcomers are encouraged to join in; however, it’s okay just to observe.

The rest of the meeting consists of members offering to share their stories of addiction and recovery. Meetings may also involve readings from texts associated with the 12-step group, such as AA’s The Big Book.

Anonymity

These meetings are intended to be anonymous and confidential, therefore, group members are asked not to speak about other group members outside of meetings.

Duration/Commitment

The length of time it takes someone to complete all twelve steps depends entirely on the individual. For those who are new to a 12-step program, it’s often recommended that newcomers attend 90 meetings over the course of 90 days.

Some people may stay in a 12-step program for a short period, while others attend meetings and return to step-work for many years. It’s common for people who have maintained abstinence for a long period of time to continue to attend meetings regularly for positive social interaction and to help prevent relapse.

I was given the ultimatum that if couldn’t get clean from alcohol and marijuana, then I would be removed from my children’s lives and have no chance of getting custody back. As an addict I just didn’t see me able to do this alone. I Google searched top rehabs in Oklahoma, and came across Boca Recovery. When I spoke to a recruiter they informed me that the facility was not in Oklahoma, but he told me not to panic. If I was ready, then all I had to worry about was making sure I was going to board on my scheduled flight. It seemed too good to be true, but sure enough they delivered and made sure I made it there safely. As soon as I stepped foot into the facility the staff treated me with the best care. Not only that, but the facility was very well maintained. You’re seen by a nurse the first day, and they set you up with everything you’ll need for the detox process. All therapist and case managers work together to build the best treatment plan that suits the patient/client. Not to mention the food they provide is amazing! Thanks to Boca recovery I have passed every UA since I’ve been out, and am able to be involved in my children’s lives again. Before arriving to Boca I didn’t see any of this being possible. I attended and completed the dual diagnosis iop program while in treatment the staff at sandstone did an amazing job to make me feel welcome and comfortable and addressed and concerns quickly and effectively. The groups were very involved and really challenged me to grow as a person. After treatment I’ve been attending the alumni program that meets regularly and does fun events. It’s been a really good way to connect with others in the sober community and to get the extra support when I need it. Once when I was 18 and again when I was 19. At the time I was not willing to admit that I had a problem with substances. I thought I had everything figured out. The years after I had graduated the program I was able to prove to myself that I still knew nothing about my alcoholism. I am grateful for sandstone since I wouldn’t have even been able to have any type of knowledge about my own substance use if it wasn’t for the amazing staff over at sandstone. They helped me get my foot through the door into the world of recovery. I don’t know where I would be without sandstone and I am beyond grateful for the effort the staff puts in to help people with their mental health/substance abuse. I now have a great relationship with my family, a true connection with my friends and most important I have a life worth living now. This place is an amazing detox. I have wicked bad anxiety and I felt so comfortable here. I almost didn’t wanna leave. I only went for detox but the people I met in those 7 days are friends for life. The case workers such as Kim and Mark are amazing people. They work with you. If you act like an asshole you’ll probably have a tougher time. If you show respect you’ll be given respect. The rooms are like a 5 star hotel, showers huge, 2 tv’s for each roommate with private headphones. Like 5 tv’s in different spaces around the building if you don’t wanna isolate in your room. The food was freaking amazing, shout out to the hard working kitchen staff. If they had a restaurant I’d go lol. The detox groups are short and sweet but that’s because most people feel like shit. If it’s nice out, they take you outside to chill, walk, play basketball, cornhole, etc. oh and shoutout to Treasure who was always finding a fun activity for us. They also have an art therapy class which was super fun. As well as reiki and yoga being offered. No other detox I’ve been to has offered stuff like this. Yeah it sucks not having your phone but it’s a time to focus on you. You get to call your loved ones 3 days a week. You really can’t beat that. I’ve been to detox’s where you don’t get to make phone calls. If you isolate in your room here, yeah your gonna have a shitty experience. If you work the program, it’s a great detox.
