Although conducted on adolescent mice, the research may provide insight into why certain teens are more vulnerable to alcohol misuse and future addiction.
Early Indicators of Alcohol Misuse Risk
Findings from the study indicate that a sensitivity to natural rewards, lower sociability, and a strong preference for high sugar content may indicate a greater vulnerability regarding alcohol consumption.
Where AI was used to support the study was in pattern recognition, with the algorithm able to successfully predict which adolescent mice would have a preference for alcohol based on their behavioral patterns.
Those who consumed more of the sweet solution were notably more inclined to later consume alcohol, suggesting potential early markers of alcohol abuse vulnerability.
Equally, those less sociable mice were similarly inclined. However, the AI model failed to predict such alcohol sensitivity in adult mice, suggesting that behavioral indicators may vary between different stages of life and development.
A Uniquely Vulnerable Stage of Life
Teens represent a particularly vulnerable group as far as drug and alcohol sensitivity is concerned, and one in which social behaviors and reward motivation may indicate a greater risk.
During adolescence, individuals undergo major neural developmental changes, alterations that also happen to coincide with social conditions that present recreational alcohol and drug use more prominently.
In turn, that can increase the risk of alcohol addiction and long-term health consequences that may require professional treatment.
Similar existing animal research has provided more mixed results, linking other notable behavioral traits to the likelihood of drug experimentation, including anxiety and risk-taking tendencies.
The inconsistencies from such studies may be down to their focused analysis on specific behaviors in isolation, rather than examining multiple behaviors simultaneously as this study has done, taking into account the nuanced combination of traits likely to result in real-world alcohol susceptibility.Â
