About Eastern Oklahoma Medical Center – Senior Health

Eastern Oklahoma Medical Center in Poteau, Oklahoma, is a small community hospital equipped to treat most conditions and emergencies. For all other scenarios patients are transported to the closest facility treating the patient’s ailment. The hospital does not accept Medicaid.

Substance Use Stabilization and Referral

If you find yourself in a crisis situation because of overdose or withdrawals from substance use, you can visit the hospital’s emergency room. They can stabilize you and refer you to a local treatment center.

The emergency room, a Level IV Trauma Center, is open 24/7. If family comes with you, two can stay with you through treatment while the others must wait in the emergency room waiting area.

If the emergency physician that cares for you decides you need further substance use treatment, you will be referred to a local facility. Most patients after a crisis situation are referred for residential treatment.

Telemedicine Program for School Children

In addition to substance treatment, the hospital offers a unique telemedicine program for 13 local schools. Children being seen by their school nurse can use video conferencing and medical equipment for treatment.

The provider on the other end of the conference can listen to the child’s heart and lungs with a digital stethoscope. Eyes, ears, nose, throat, and skin are examined using a high definition digital otoscope and camera.

An electronic prescription can be sent to the pharmacy specified by the parent. The parent is asked for permission before the teleconference and can attend the conference virtually from home or work. Ailments that can be treated via teleconference include earache, fever, cough/cold, rashes, abrasions, strep, the flu, headache, and pink eye.

Visitation with Your Best Friend

If you’re admitted to the hospital for an overdose or any other reason, you’ll be happy to know your dog or cat can be a visitor. The pet must be at least two years of age and can visit one hour per day. The hospital does warn that pets are susceptible to some human viruses and that chemicals are used in the hospital, such as cleaning agents.

We had our family member that had to stay a couple days in the hospital on med surge and let me tell you the staff there was absolutely wonderful! Nurses were so supportive and kind! The nurse Bethany and the CNA Kalli were so sweet and kind and showed what real care and compassion is even when she was afraid of being alone because being hospitalized is no fun! She stated they treated her like family and took away the fear of being alone and that speaks volumes and shows there is still kindness and compassion in the healthcare profession! Thank you guys greatly! We love our EOMC hospital in Leflore county!

Accepted Insurance

Eastern Oklahoma Medical Center – Senior Health works with several private insurance providers and also accepts private payments when possible, please contact to verify your specific insurance provider.

Other Forms of Payment

Private insurance refers to any kind of healthcare coverage that isn't from the state or federal government. This includes individual and family plans offered by an employer or purchased from the Insurance Marketplace. Every plan will have different requirements and out of pocket costs so be sure to get the full details before you start treatment.

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Medicare is a federal program that provides health insurance for those 65 and older. It also serves people under 65 with chronic and disabling health challenges. To use Medicare for addiction treatment you need to find a program that accepts Medicare and is in network with your plan. Out of pocket costs and preauthorization requirements vary, so always check with your provider.

Military members, veterans, and eligible dependents have access to specific insurance programs that help them get the care they need. TRICARE and VA insurance can help you access low cost or no cost addiction and mental health treatment. Programs that accept military insurance often have targeted treatment focused on the unique challenges military members, veterans, and their families face.

Residential treatment programs are those that offer housing and meals in addition to substance abuse treatment. Rehab facilities that offer residential treatment allow patients to focus solely on recovery, in an environment totally separate from their lives. Some rehab centers specialize in short-term residential treatment (a few days to a week or two), while others solely provide treatment on a long-term basis (several weeks to months). Some offer both, and tailor treatment to the patient's individual requirements.

Treatments

Many of those suffering from addiction also suffer from mental or emotional illnesses like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, or anxiety disorders. Rehab and other substance abuse facilities treating those with a dual diagnosis or co-occurring disorder administer psychiatric treatment to address the person's mental health issue in addition to drug and alcohol rehabilitation.

Mental health rehabs focus on helping individuals recover from mental illnesses like bipolar disorder, clinical depression, anxiety disorders, schizophrenia, and more. Mental health professionals at these facilities are trained to understand and treat mental health issues, both in individual and group settings.

Programs

Adult Program

Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.

LGBTQ Program

Recovery is most successful when clients feel accepted and validated by their peers and treatment providers. Facilities that offer LGBTQ-inclusive programming are committed to creating a safe space where everyone can grow and recover without fear of judgment or discrimination. They will have dedicated policies in place to create a safe and supportive environment that fosters free expression.

Clinical Services

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a therapy modality that focuses on the relationship between one's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It is used to establish and allow for healthy responses to thoughts and feelings (instead of unhealthy responses, like using drugs or alcohol). CBT has been proven effective for recovering addicts of all kinds, and is used to strengthen a patient's own self-awareness and ability to self-regulate. CBT allows individuals to monitor their own emotional state, become more adept at communicating with others, and manage stress without needing to engage in substance abuse.

Whether a marriage or other committed relationship, an intimate partnership is one of the most important aspects of a person's life. Drug and alcohol addiction affects both members of a couple in deep and meaningful ways, as does rehab and recovery. Couples therapy and other couples-focused treatment programs are significant parts of exploring triggers of addiction, as well as learning how to build healthy patterns to support ongoing sobriety.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a modified form of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), a treatment designed to help people understand and ultimately affect the relationship between their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. DBT is often used for individuals who struggle with self-harm behaviors, such as self-mutilation (cutting) and suicidal thoughts, urges, or attempts. It has been proven clinically effective for those who struggle with out-of-control emotions and mental health illnesses like Borderline Personality Disorder.

Experiential therapy is a form of therapy in which clients are encouraged to surface and work through subconscious issues by engaging in real-time experiences. Experiential therapy departs from traditional talk therapy by involving the body, and having clients engage in activities, movements, and physical and emotional expression. This can involve role-play or using props (which can include other people). Experiential therapy can help people process trauma, memories, and emotion quickly, deeply, and in a lasting fashion, leading to substantial and impactful healing.

Research clearly demonstrates that recovery is far more successful and sustainable when loved ones like family members participate in rehab and substance abuse treatment. Genetic factors may be at play when it comes to drug and alcohol addiction, as well as mental health issues. Family dynamics often play a critical role in addiction triggers, and if properly educated, family members can be a strong source of support when it comes to rehabilitation.

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT) is a way of getting nicotine into the bloodstream without smoking. It uses products that supply low doses of nicotine to help people stop smoking. The goal of therapy is to cut down on cravings for nicotine and ease the symptoms of nicotine withdrawal.

Trauma therapy addresses traumatic incidents from a client's past that are likely affecting their present-day experience. Trauma is often one of the primary triggers and potential causes of addiction, and can stem from child sexual abuse, domestic violence, having a parent with a mental illness, losing one or both parents at a young age, teenage or adult sexual assault, or any number of other factors. The purpose of trauma therapy is to allow a patient to process trauma and move through and past it, with the help of trained and compassionate mental health professionals.

My dr was Osoma Antar,Md. this was my second encounter with him within a couple weeks. The first incident was misdiagnosing my 6yr old who had strep and passed it to everyone because I was told it was just an infection and just treat with regular cold medicine. The second encounter was today I told him what was wrong and he asked me what I wanted him to do give me pain medication. I mean you’re the dr. Did you check my file. How would you treat a patient with acute pain. He was so nonchalant didn’t seem to want to be at work at all. As a medical professional I’m not hard on my peers but this was the second time. I’ve been feeling sick ever since the injections they gave me. This place is starting to scare me and unless it’s an emergency ‼️ I will not be returning as long as this Dr is here.

My provider sent me to EOMC for a chest xray because I have an acute sinus infection, ear infections and acute bronchitis with junkie lungs. The staff that I interacted with were wonderful. My serious concern is that it is now 3 days later and when called, they said the radiologist just hasn’t had time to look at it. Really?!!!! This is why people living in Wister or Heavener will drive to ft smith for a simple xray or bloodwork rather than risk getting no answers or answers that come unacceptably late. To be fair…. I was warned.

I was recently there for a two night stay. Aside from the ER registration lady being inattentive and less than friendly my stay was very comfortable. The ER nurses, floor nurses, aides, and the APRN Ms.Davis were all extremely caring and thoughtful to myself and my family. Being hospitalized is not on anyone’s to do list but the staff made it as comfortable as possible.

Shameful. I am sure that poteau hospital has some.good people, unfortunately they're not the ones which inact procedures. Case in point. I have been having really strange attacks which make me confused, short of breath, anxious, and clammy. Yesterday I had an attack and ran to the emergency room to have blood pressure taken and oxygen levels. I had to go through entire intake process, like a walk in clinic, and take a seat. I even begged and told them I felt really really bad. Informing them of how bad I was just made them mad A nurse was very short with me and said "BAD? BAD?, WHAT KIND OF BAD." What they wanted was the ability to charge medicaid and Medicare as much as possible for an emergency room visit, just to check my blood pressure and possibly save my life. IN THE END, I LEFT AND WENT TO D&D PHARMACY...THEY CHECKED MY BLOOD WITH NO RELEASE FORMS AND WITHOUT CHARGE.... D&D CHECKED MY BLOOD SUGAR AND IT WAS IN THE 70'S. SO I HAD EXTREMELY LOW BLOOD SUGAR IS WHY I FELT LIKE I WAS DYING. D&D GOT SOME SUGAR IN ME AND I IMMEDIATELY FELT BETTER. YOU BETTER BE ABSOLUTELY DYING BEFORE YOU CHOOSE TO ALLOW EOMC TO EVEN CHECK YOUR BLOOD PRESSURE, BECAUSE THEY MAY JUST KILL YOU.

If I could give no stars I would. The ER lost my husband. They told us he had discharged, and then when he did not come out we asked about him. They told us he was not in his room. Only when they went to look for him they realized he was in the room. They never went to actually go check on him. They just told us he was gone. Sending unnecessary fear into me and our children's minds. I will not be going back. That is not okay.

First visit was greeted with concern and friendliness..Felt right at home as Karri assessed my ankle and determined the proper procedure to get me walking again. Gave me exercises to do at home and my progress has been great. Looking for ward to more therapy and the road to recovery. Love the place and the people.

Be careful going to this hospital they do interview their employees no telling how they pick and choose. Will never use this hospital again. Terrible service and staff, they really need to work on themselves, they need to look at Choctaw nation and base their hospital off that. Sat here 3 hours to be told it’s probably a pulled muscle.
