About Farnum Center

Farnum Center is a drug and alcohol rehab facility located in Manchester, New Hampshire. They treat adults for substance use disorder (SUD) and alcohol use disorder. They treat clients with dual diagnoses who struggle with both a mental health condition and a substance problem simultaneously. Here, their levels of care include residential and outpatient treatment.

Everyone must undergo a full assessment upon entering this facility. If you have drugs in your system then you can detox first. They have a medical staff that can monitor you 24 hours a day and provide you with the appropriate medication you will need for withdrawal. Once you have stabilized, you can begin their residential treatment program.

Residential treatment includes a bed and three meals a day. You will participate in group therapy every day and you may have some individual sessions. Your family may be invited to participate in certain sessions.

Like most rehab facilities, they use cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) to get you to think differently and adapt healthy behaviors. They also use a lesser known approach to treating addiction called health realization therapy which is based on the concept that people have an innate ability to live life in a healthy way. You will be encouraged to create your own reality by viewing your circumstances differently.

The staff also provides you with recreational activities. They have a pool in a gym where you can get your exercise. You may enjoy hikes and group trust activities. If you don’t need residential care then you can look into their outpatient options. They provide group and individual therapy as well as a partial hospitalization program (PHP) and intensive outpatient program (IOP).

Once rehab is over, the staff can assist you with finding a sober living home or other accommodations. They can help you get vocational training and find 12 step meetings in your community.

Accepted Insurance

Farnum Center works with several private insurance providers and also accepts private payments when possible, please contact to verify your specific insurance provider.

Other Forms of Payment

Private insurance refers to any kind of healthcare coverage that isn't from the state or federal government. This includes individual and family plans offered by an employer or purchased from the Insurance Marketplace. Every plan will have different requirements and out of pocket costs so be sure to get the full details before you start treatment.

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Financial aid can take many forms. Centers may have grants or scholarships available to clients who meet eligibility requirements. Programs that receive SAMHSA grants may have financial aid available for those who need treatment as well. Grants and scholarships can help you pai for treatment without having to repay.

Sliding scale payments are based on a client's income and family size. The goal is to make treatment affordable to everyone. By taking these factors into account, addiction recovery care providers help ensure that your treatment does not become a financial burden to you or your family, eliminating one barrier to care.

Medicare is a federal program that provides health insurance for those 65 and older. It also serves people under 65 with chronic and disabling health challenges. To use Medicare for addiction treatment you need to find a program that accepts Medicare and is in network with your plan. Out of pocket costs and preauthorization requirements vary, so always check with your provider.

Military members, veterans, and eligible dependents have access to specific insurance programs that help them get the care they need. TRICARE and VA insurance can help you access low cost or no cost addiction and mental health treatment. Programs that accept military insurance often have targeted treatment focused on the unique challenges military members, veterans, and their families face.

Medicaid is a state based program that helps lower-income individuals and families pay for healthcare. Medicaid covers addiction treatment so those enrolled can use their coverage to pay for rehab. When a program accepts Medicaid the client often pays very little or nothing out of their own pocket.

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

outpatient iconOutpatient

Clients undergoing treatment at an outpatient rehab reside in their own homes and engage in counseling and recovery education sessions in the evening, at night, or on the weekend. This ensures clients' access to care while working, caregiving, or attending school. Outpatient treatment is often the next level of care for clients stepping down from inpatient care, though some clients enroll immediately after completing detox. Many programs offer medication assisted treatment (MAT) for those in alcohol or opioid recovery.

inpatient iconInpatient

The Farnum Center’s Inpatient Program is a 30-day, gender-specific treatment procedure with the capacity to serve 40 adults who have primary substance abuse issues, or mental health and substance use problems. This program is for clients who require the structure and intensive support of an inpatient setting. They have a very unique approach to treatment by using Health Realization (HR) in all of their programs and start with the premise that each client is healthy and has it within themselves to guide their own life with the help and support of their trained staff.

intensive-outpatient iconIntensive Outpatient

The Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) enables adult clients who do not require an inpatient level of care, and gives them the opportunity to receive intensive treatment services while fulfilling their daily responsibilities such as parenting, working, or pursuing educational goals. In the first phase of treatment, clients participate in programming for three hours a day, three days a week, over the course of one month. Continuing care requires weekly group and individual counseling for eight weeks. The program consists of group health realization education, group therapy, individual counseling, friend/family education, aftercare planning, and case management.

aftercare iconAftercare Support

Rehab aftercare programs provide continuing care for clients in an advanced phase of recovery, including those who have completed detox and intensive inpatient treatment. These clients typically have already engaged in many hours of addiction counseling and recovery education. Drug rehab aftercare supports clients in maintaining their sobriety at home, in the workplace, and in the community. Case managers and care teams advise clients on the resources they may need to promote their sustained sobriety.

12-step icon12-Step

12-step programs are addiction recovery models based on Alcoholics Anonymous (AA). A number of substance abuse programs (including some drug and alcohol rehab centers) use the 12 steps as a basis for treatment. Beginning steps involve admitting powerlessness over the addiction and creating a spiritual basis for recovery. Middle steps including making direct amends to those who've been hurt by the addiction, and the final step is to assist others in addiction recovery in the same way. 12-Step offshoots including Narcotics Anonymous (NA), Cocaine Anonymous (CA), Dual Recovery Anonymous (DRA), Sex and Love Addicts Anonymous (SLAA) and Gamblers Anonymous (GA).

sober-living iconSober Living Homes

Residents of a sober living home in New Hampshire commit to abstaining from drug and alcohol use and to abiding by the house rules. This communal living environment, also called a halfway house, provides a supportive community where people in recovery can start a new life free from substances. Typical house rules include individual room maintenance, shared meal times, curfews, and 12-step meeting attendance.

heart-hands iconIntervention Services

During a drug intervention in New Hampshire, family and friends gather to confront a loved one about their addiction and its consequences. The intervention includes specific examples of destructive behaviors and clearly explains what each person will do if the individual refuses to get help. It also offers a clear treatment plan that is often provided by professional intervention services.

partial-hospitalization iconPartial Hospitalization Program

A partial hospitalization program (PHP) is a short-term form of intensive rehab, usually for those with acute symptoms that are hard to manage but don't require 24-hour care. PHPs have structured programming (i.e. individual and/or group therapy), and usually meet 3-5 days a week for ~ 6 hours (i.e. 9am-3m). Some PHPs are residential (patients sleep on site) and some are not, so patients sleep at home. PHPs can last from 1-6 months, and some offer transportation and meals. The Farnum Center recognizes that there are individuals who can be successful in treatment by coming to Farnum on a daily basis, but still returning home each day. This is what our PHP offers. By engaging in outpatient PHP, clients can continue maintaining their outside responsibilities, while having the support of professionals and peers five days per week, four hours each day.

24-hour icon24-Hour Clinical Care

At certain points in the recovery process, it's important to have support available 24/7. 24-hour clinical care offers a safe environment in which to recover from drug or alcohol addiction in peace, knowing medical detox and other treatment will happen with professionals on hand.

medically-assisted-detox iconMedically Assisted Detox

The Farnum Center’s Medical Detoxification unit is open 24 hours a day. It is medically supervised by their Medical Director, nurses, counselors, licensed mental health clinicians, and master level alcohol and drug counselors. The Medical Detoxification unit will serve individuals 17 and older needing help to safely and medically stop using alcohol and other drugs. Once screened and accepted, a specific medical treatment plan will be developed according to the established protocols. Each protocol calls for a certain medication to help alleviate the symptoms of withdrawal. A very important piece of the detoxification is the frequency of monitoring withdrawal symptoms. The detoxification process consists of three essential components: evaluation, stabilization, and fostering patient readiness for entry into treatment.

Treatments

The goal of treatment for alcoholism is abstinence. Those with poor social support, poor motivation, or psychiatric disorders tend to relapse within a few years of treatment. For these people, success is measured by longer periods of abstinence, reduced use of alcohol, better health, and improved social functioning. Recovery and Maintenance are usually based on 12 step programs and AA meetings.

Treatment provided at drug rehab in New Hampshire prepares individuals to handle life stressors without using substances. Participants get the tools and support they need to maintain lifelong recovery.

Many of those suffering from addiction also suffer from mental or emotional illnesses like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, or anxiety disorders. Rehab and other substance abuse facilities treating those with a dual diagnosis or co-occurring disorder administer psychiatric treatment to address the person's mental health issue in addition to drug and alcohol rehabilitation.

A combined mental health and substance abuse rehab has the staff and resources available to handle individuals with both mental health and substance abuse issues. It can be challenging to determine where a specific symptom stems from (a mental health issue or an issue related to substance abuse), so mental health and substance abuse professionals are helpful in detangling symptoms and keeping treatment on track.

Opioid rehabs specialize in supporting those recovering from opioid addiction. They treat those suffering from addiction to illegal opioids like heroin, as well as prescription drugs like oxycodone. These centers typically combine both physical as well as mental and emotional support to help stop addiction. Physical support often includes medical detox and subsequent medical support (including medication), and mental support includes in-depth therapy to address the underlying causes of addiction.

In New Hampshire, individuals can benefit from rehab programs that provide substance abuse treatment on an inpatient or outpatient basis. These programs typically utilize evidence-based therapies such as cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), and experiential therapies, together with family counseling, individual, and group meetings. These critical interventions provide an effective treatment program that will help you achieve sobriety and maintain it in the long-term.

Programs

adult-program thumbnail image

Adult Program

Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.
young-adult-program thumbnail image

Young Adult Program

Young adulthood can be an exciting, yet difficult, time of transition. Individuals in their late teens to mid-20s face unique stressors related to school, jobs, families, and social circles, which can lead to a rise in substance use. Rehab centers with dedicated young adult programs will include activities and amenities that cater to this age group, with an emphasis on specialized counseling, peer socialization, and ongoing aftercare.
lgbtq-program thumbnail image

LGBTQ Program

Recovery is most successful when clients feel accepted and validated by their peers and treatment providers. Facilities that offer LGBTQ-inclusive programming are committed to creating a safe space where everyone can grow and recover without fear of judgment or discrimination. They will have dedicated policies in place to create a safe and supportive environment that fosters free expression.
military-program thumbnail image

Military Program

Serving in the military is both mentally and physically challenging, and can result in trauma that persists even after combat ends. Military programs are tailored to the specific and often complex needs of active duty personnel, veterans, and military families. Clients often access these programs through the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA).

Clinical Services

Cognitive behavioral therapy in New Hampshire involves several steps to healing. The therapist will first help you identify stressful conditions currently in your life. You'll then identify your thoughts and beliefs about these challenges. Next, you'll identify inaccurate thoughts, and lastly you'll change those thought patterns, which will lead to changed behavior.

Dialectical behavior therapy is a form of talk therapy. While it's similar to cognitive behavioral therapy, it adds a focus on intense emotions. Its goal is to help you learn to manage difficult feelings and make positive changes.

equine-therapy iconEquine Therapy

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

For clients who aren't ready to commit to change, motivational interviewing can be a good option for rehab treatment in New Hampshire. This method of therapy helps clients become motivated to change. It aims to provide empathy, support, and empowerment so the client feels ready and able to make necessary changes.

The goal of trauma therapy is to address the lingering emotional and physical effects that traumatic experiences can have on your life. Therapists help you to process the traumatic event so you can more easily manage your physical and emotional responses and develop compassion for yourself.

If you participate in couples therapy in New Hampshire, you can expect to attend an average of 12 sessions. These may include individual and joint sessions with the counselor. Therapy will likely focus on learning skills to resolve conflict and successfully manage relationship challenges.

Families are the most important people to an individual in treatment. They want families to feel like The Farnum Center is just as much their program as it is the clients. So what they have done is create programs on the weekends and invite family members to participate. They offer adult visits on Saturdays and Sundays from 1:00 pm to 2:30 pm. The visiting day is determined by the unit your loved one is on. They also have children visits so the client can see their children with the support of staff. On visiting day we expect each family member to participate in family education prior to the visit.

When you develop life skills during drug rehab in New Hampshire, you learn how to adapt to challenging situations and tasks. You learn coping strategies and techniques that allow you to live a healthy, sober lifestyle.

To recover from addiction your body needs the proper nutrients for healing. Nutrition therapy during drug rehab in New Hampshire provides a dietary plan for optimal results. This treatment will train you how to eat the foods you need for energy and rejuvenation.

Recreational therapy (aka therapeutic recreation) uses creative and fun activities to help with addiction recovery. Recreational therapists lead patients in entertaining and engaging activities like sports or games; art (drawing, painting, sculpture); drama, music, and dance; and/or community outings (field trips) to improve patients' physical, social, and emotional well-being.

Creative arts therapy combines active art making, psychological theory, creative processes, and personal experience. This method can be an effective way to address challenging issues in a new way. Examples include painting, poetry, dance, and acting.

Experiential therapy is a form of therapy in which clients are encouraged to surface and work through subconscious issues by engaging in real-time experiences. Experiential therapy departs from traditional talk therapy by involving the body, and having clients engage in activities, movements, and physical and emotional expression. This can involve role-play or using props (which can include other people). Experiential therapy can help people process trauma, memories, and emotion quickly, deeply, and in a lasting fashion, leading to substantial and impactful healing.

I have read some of the negative reviews on here and the only thing I can say is when your going through detox every bad thing that happens is greatly magnified and things are not always as bad as you think. It’s a detox not day camp. If you are truly being sick and tired of being sick and tired and you want help getting clean and sober I would suggest going to Farnum. This place definitely saved my life. If you are looking for a place that will help in your recovery then please reach out to them. I didn’t get it right the first time so I’ve been there twice over the course of 5 years but both times I’ve been there all of the staff were all very helpful and caring. To anyone reading this “you are not alone and recovery is at your fingertips.” Good luck!

My experience was good but not the best I i was in the 28 day program i was bullied by almost all the girls I was in there with except for my roommate she was very kind and compassionet my case manager acted like I was bothering her when I knocked on her office door and she would just close it in my face or just ignore me and pretend she didn't hear me they took most of my art stuff and locked it up even when I expressed that my artwork is a huge part of my recovery but then allowed the other girls to have all of their art stuff the day I got there they told me I wasn't allowed to come back and ordered me an Uber in a city I didn't know at all when I was at the hospital they allowed all the other clients to go through my belongings and take what they wanted so when I got back on the unit I had nothing to take a shower with when I told the staff that my toiletries were missing they made the girls give it back to me half empty when I expressed to the director that the girls who stole my shampoo and body wash were bullying me she denied it and told me that they weren't I lost count how many nights I cried myself to sleep because of the bullying and thought about self harm on a daily basis to relieve the stress from the other girls I do have to say some of the staff are kind and compassionate my roommate was afraid to speak up to the bullies when they started to bully her too and when I graduated the program they almost didn't give me my art stuff back but I made sure that they went out and got it from the storage unit before I left and they never gave me the vivitrol shot before I got discharged like they told me they would do my PTSD is far worse than it was from all the bullies I had to be surrounded by while being there for the 28 days I'm just glad that I don't Have to see any of those girls again who bullied me I am now 7 months clean and sober and am in sober living with my fiance in my hometown thank you to some of the staff members who were kind and understanding and compassionate and took the time to do artwork with me and just talk to me when I was having a hard time I will never forget you and to the staff who treated me like my feelings didn't matter and like i was a prisoner hope u all learn to be more understanding and compassionate towards every client especially the ones being picked on and bullied going into rehab is very hard to do and us addicts and alcoholics should have a more calm and peaceful environment to come into especially when we're coming off of drugs and alcohol

Hello to all…I had gone to Beach Hill rehab center years ago I mean yrs like 43 it didn’t take, I wasn’t ready to surrender…a few years later I ended up at the Farnum Center a 30 day stay…the Staff were unbelievable the place became home very quickly. This time was different the support was sincere the Councilor's were challenging I needed that they could read me like a book the gig was up….So here I am today from living on the Streets to being happily married 2 adult children .I’m retired and Xiao Ou and I are planing to travel starting this year 2023…I had read the center had extended its hours because of the amount overdoses recently ( very sad ) I didn’t realize the place was still in operation happiness came over me to know Farnum Center is helping to save lives…My name should be on the wall if it’s still there…James Leach… I’ll leave you with what our Council would say to all of us at the end of our session ( time together)..If you find you have 2 Smiles Keep One and Give the other Away, If You Find You Only Have One Keep It…..
