What are Presciption Stimulants?
Stimulants are a class of substances with one characteristic in common. They speed up brain and bodily functions when consumed. These drugs stimulate the central nervous system by increasing your alertness, focus and energy levels. Their effects can vary depending on the individual and the specific medication.
Prescription stimulants like Adderall provide relief to many individuals who reap the benefits of their therapeutic value based on medical guidance. Others are prescribed appetite suppressants that contain stimulants to lose weight in order to decrease the risk of medical complications of obesity.
Some stimulants are found in over the counter medications. For example, certain nasal decongestants contain the stimulant pseudoephedrine.
Not all stimulants are medications. The nicotine found in cigarettes is also a stimulant. There are other common stimulants that might seem harmless in comparison. Millions enjoy their daily cups of coffee without realizing that the caffeine that gives them their morning jolt is a natural stimulant with energizing effects.
That’s not to say that caffeine is inherently dangerous. Some people rely on stimulants just to get through the day. Individuals often seek an extra energy boost as the pace of modern life accelerates and speed becomes the norm.
How do Stimulants Work?
Taking a prescription stimulant influences the central nervous system. Dopamine and norepinephrine levels are elevated to produce physiological responses. Stimulant effects are dual in nature which means that they impact the brain and the body.
You might feel a sense of euphoria when dopamine takes effect. Your heart rate accelerates and blood pressure increases as norepinephrine levels rise in your body. This results in the traditional stimulant-like effects that boost energy levels, concentration and attention.
It can be easy to fall into a trap of using stimulants anytime you feel down. Many stimulants are used in most cases. Cocaine and methamphetamine do have some medicinal value but they ruin thousands of lives every year. Legal prescription stimulants are misused and diverted for other purposes apart from their original uses. It’s fundamental to understand their proper use and potential dangers.
Common Uses and Misuses of Prescription Stimulants
It’s important to know that stimulants have a place in modern medicine. According to studies, about 3.5% of Americans under 19 and about 6.3% of adults are prescribed stimulants. Their effects can greatly benefit these individuals when prescribed and used appropriately within a physician’s care. Here are a few approved use cases.
ADHD Treatment: Prescription stimulants can help people with ADHD function better in their occupations and personal lives as they help improve concentration and reduce impulsivity for these individuals. ADHD stimulant medication still has psychoactive properties so misuse is possible.
Narcolepsy Management: Heightened alert and energy levels can help manage excessive daytime sleepiness in individuals with sleep disorders like narcolepsy which is marked by uncontrollable deep sleep episodes. Stimulants can also reduce obstructive sleep apnea. This is a condition that causes drowsiness throughout the day.
Appetite Suppression: Prescription stimulants are of value in assisting patients with binge eating disorders to reduce overeating behaviors due to their appetite suppressing properties.
Prescription stimulants are often misused for non-medical purposes which leads to addiction and other health problems. The misuse potential of prescription stimulants is recognized by U.S. government agencies. The FDA has classified many stimulants as Schedule II drugs under the Controlled Substances Act due to their elevated risk of misuse, diversion, addiction and overdose.
There’s a dangerous pattern behind the misuse of stimulants. It’s a fact that individuals frequently consume them without a prescription or in ways that differ from the recommendations of the manufacturers who formulate them and physicians who prescribe them.
Stimulant misuse numbers aren’t minor. An estimated 45.2% of young adults between the ages of 18 to 25 misuse them yearly according to one 2021 report from SAMHSA. Why are so many young individuals abusing prescription stimulants?
Behind these alarming numbers lies a dangerously common misunderstanding. A major misperception is the idea that prescription stimulants are “smart drugs” that help individuals without ADHD or a sleep disorder become more productive at work, get better grades or enhance their cognitive abilities. This is not true as several studies have indicated.
How do people get access to prescription medication? According to research, 50-90% of individuals get ahold of them through diversion involving family or friends who have a prescription.
The Risks of Misuse
Stimulant use disorder is defined as a harmful pattern of stimulant consumption. It’s a significant problem. Approximately 4.5 million individuals in the U.S. struggled with stimulant misuse in 2022 according to the CDC.
Abusing prescription stimulants can have serious consequences, including:
Heart Problems: Stimulants are hard on the heart. Increased heart rate, elevated blood pressure and irregular heartbeat can strain the cardiovascular system. Heart attacks, seizures and even sudden death are all real threats that can result from the abuse of these drugs.
These side effects also frequently occur in those who use prescription stimulants not prescribed for them and in those who combine stimulants with other substances such as alcohol.
Sleep Disturbances: Insomnia and sleep difficulties are common side effects of stimulant abuse because their consumption may disrupt sleep patterns.
Gastrointestinal Effects: The gastrointestinal system suffers from the excesses of stimulant abuse. This can manifest in symptoms like diminished appetite, excessive weight loss, constipation, nausea and abdominal pain.
Psychosis and Other Neurological Consequences: The dangers of misusing stimulants compound with repeated use. Stimulant abuse can induce psychotic symptoms such as hallucinations and delusions. These drugs can cause dizziness, tremors, restlessness, headaches, memory loss, problems thinking clearly and hostile mood changes that can transform a person, making them irritable and even violent.
Addiction: The rewarding effects of stimulants can lead to dependence. The human mind and body can get used to the stimulant effects of these drugs which creates a situation where people depend on stimulants to function daily. If that person stops consuming the stimulants they’re addicted to then they can experience withdrawal symptoms like extreme mood swings, anxiousness and hallucinations.
Addiction also increases the risk of overdose. Yearly deaths associated with stimulant consumption grew from 12.122 to 57,497 between 2015 and 2022.
Researchers have also found that nonmedical use of amphetamine like prescription stimulants increases the incidence of emergency department visits. An increasing number of emergency room visits dramatically showcases the perils of misusing these drugs.
Responsible Use of Prescription Stimulants
If you’re thinking about taking prescription stimulants then it’s essential to follow the directions from licensed healthcare providers. Open communication with your doctor is crucial. You’ll learn how to watch out for side effects and they’ll adjust your treatment as needed.
Tthe risk of misusing prescription stimulants drastically falls when individuals follow their plan of care as prescribed by a qualified physician.
Too many people decide to take stimulants on their own. They don’t know that stimulants interact with other substances which leads to high blood pressure, irregular heartbeats and other dangerous side effects. It’s always best to follow your doctor’s orders.
Many individuals buy prescription stimulants in illegal markets and expose themselves to life threatening risks. Unfortunately, they don’t often know what they’re actually getting from dealers. Unregulated drugs are often contaminated with other substances like fentanyl and are the main drivers of involuntary overdoses.

I came to avenues a broken soul. I didn’t love myself or anybody else. I did not want to live anymore. I have been to 5 star rehabs with private chefs and rooms that look like the four seasons and those places have nothing on avenues Cambridge. This place is truly amazing and that’s coming from a dope fien. My partner spent 9 weeks here last fall. Having tried other inpatient and outpatient programs, I can say that Soberman’s truly helped him discover what life was worth living for. The staff and the care they provide are top-notch. I think this place truly saved his life. From a family perspective, I really appreciated how they included me and others in his family in his care. The family support calls and the ability to do family therapy sessions helped me understand his journey better, but to also understand my role in all of this. Overall, I can’t recommend Soberman’s enough; we are grateful to be a part of their community!

Arrowwood has been a great experience. The people here make all the difference. Jamie is EXCELLENT at what he does as an alumni coordinator. He does amazing peer support work. Keegan, Jess, Ms. T, and Ajai are phenomenal group facilitators. Uschell, Joel, Suge, Quan, Claud, Crystal, and Tracy are amazing BHT’s. Everyone is so supportive. The facility is great, very clean, and lots of things to do here. I would recommend to a friend.

I am a born pessimist, so I spent a great deal of time looking into this place. First, I found nothing negative whatsoever, Secondly, I spent 60 days here and cried leaving. This place and ALL of it’s staff saved my life. I can remember spending countless times in the nurses station, at the wellness advocates desk, and even in the Blanco hall, talking to the different staff about my days, my problems, my achievements, etc. And EVERY SINGLE PERSON TOOK THE TIME TO LISTEN AND HELP OR CHEER ME ON!! There’s not a staff member in this place that doesn’t care about each person. The therapy sessions are incredible and I can’t thank them enough for showing me I wasn’t hopeless and giving me all the tools I need to have a beautiful, healthy and sober life. I am 45 years old, and I never thought this was possible.

From the moment I arrived, I felt welcomed and cared for. Having a private room was a huge plus it gave me the personal space I needed to focus on my recovery while still managing my work and school. The fact that I could use my phone and laptop was incredibly helpful, allowing me to stay connected and on top of everything while receiving the care I needed.The staff were incredible not only professional but genuinely caring. They treated me like a friend, making the whole experience feel much more comfortable. The facility itself is very comfy. Plus, there were plenty of fun outings that kept me active and distracted in the best way possible.If you’re looking for a place where you can focus on recovery while still maintaining your responsibilities, I can t recommend this place enough!

I had the privilege of going through detox at this facility. To say this place is awesome is an understatement. They sincerely care about your well being and health. It’s a small facility so they can spend more individual time with the residents. They cater three amazing meals a day along with snacks 24/7. Hello im Ashley and im an addict. My whole life has been filled with chaos and trauma. Some from my own doing and some that wasnt my fault. There is not a single bad word i can say abouy my experience at Beachway Therapy Center. My time there was cut short thanks to my own self-sabotaging behavior. Even then Beachway still treated me with compassion and the desire to help me. My situation was a unusual one. I came into the trauma program with a clean date of April 16th 2014. So at 11 years clean i was dealing with bipolar disorder, intense anxiety, a very unhealthy toxic relationship and an intense desire to break generational curses for my children. My history is one that involves homelessness, street drugs and a street mentality. Beachway took on the challenge of helping me work thru that trauma. I opened up to the program and other woman like never before. I had an amazing counselor, amazing case manager, and amazing staff that were there anytime i had moments of high anxiety or worry. I am so disappointed i ruined my chances of having a chance at going thru a trauma program with Beachway. Just in the short time i was there i did gain a small sense of self back. If you were like me and worry about making friends with the other clients because they wont understand you or like you, that is not even close to true. I found a sense of community that i couldnt find anywhere else in my life. If i manage to find a magic lamp, one of my wishes would definitely be used on looking young forever after that id wish to feel the peace and serenity i felt at Beachway. Thanks to them i had just enough courage to get me and my kids out of my bad situation. Now my goal is to continue with trauma therapy. Do not be me and let your past dictate your future. No matter how clean you are from drugs that trauma will creep up on you and when it does use tools like Beachway to seek help instead of the alternative, and please for the love of your higher power get out of your own way and accept their help before you get kicked out like i did. I am forever grateful. Thanks for letting me share my expierence, strength and hope.

My experience at Banyan was very good. The staff was very helpful, the therapy was extremely beneficial , and the food was great! Like with all rehabs, it is what you make of it. If you go there thinking everything is perfect, you’ll be disappointed, it’s not. If you go for simply a social experience, it’s not a resort. If you go because you’re serious about your recovery, it’s a great place to take the first step !

Loved Beachway. I was extremely anxious with everyday panic attacks, and the medicine was no longer working. At Beachway I found a way to control my attacks and anxiety. It is not easy and sometimes I felt like it wasn’t going to work.
We worked through my childhood traumas and I learned techniques on how to defuse my anxiety.
Loved Dina’s honest and hardcore classes and also Gigi’s trauma class.

Wonderful staff and program. The groups are thought out, planned and executed successfully. You can tell the staff are all on the same page when it comes to patient care. Addiction and substance abuse are addressed with compassion and professionalism. Symetria Recovery saved my life!! I was driving down the highway suffering major withdraw from opioid addiction. I found Symetria Recovery and they had me in the very next day. When I got tested, I was positive for Fentanyl, which had to of come from something off the street. Where do I begin Before I came to Elevate I thought I had reached rock bottom in life but shortly after coming here I realized they saved me from ever getting there. I came for an alcohol addiction which became a secondary objective to my stay. I learned to love myself and gained confidence in being me. I found a way to finally be happy in life, in the current moment without contingencies. To know I was never broken and that I have more control over my perspective than I ever thought was possible. My sobriety came as a byproduct of discovering my own self worth and I often lay awake at night filled with gratitude for having the opportunity to go through this program. The amount of understanding and support offered to me was outstanding and I felt as if I was amongst family. The care and love from the staff inspires the clients to care for each other in the same fashion. If at any point you need a shoulder to lean on or just someone to listen, every face you see is there for you. I can t find the words to formulate a sentence that will truly express my thanks and love for Elevate. All I can do is let others know if your suffering and need the help, this is where you will find it.

I m writing this as a parent. After researching several residential facilities it became apparent Peaks in Colorado Springs stood out from the others. We were specifically looking for mental health treatment. From start to finish at their facility there was always involvement in what was going on, (with my adult daughter s permission of course). Having caring and knowledgeable people to help through an incredibly hard time was needed and so appreciated. Through different stages of her care there was visitation, phone calls and weekly Zoom type meetings where families of clients could talk together with a therapist about highs, lows or concerns. The hardest thing to do was feeling like you are handing over your loved one at such a vulnerable time and not knowing what s going on. Peaks has so much compassion in knowing that. IT’S A YES. JUST GO.Unfortunately, an issue at home meant my stay ended early – there was a tragic miscommunication amongst staff the day before as well, which they handled with the utmost integrity. It was certainly the only snafu in my experience, and it rightfully belongs in the “sh*t happens” category. Staff had the humility and courage to own the mistake, and that willingness alone was enough to know that I had come to a place full of people who are truly the real deal when it comes to mental health.I left because I had to – not because I wanted to. In fact, I was planning on extending 30 days to complete their PHP, but life called me back home.Make no mistake – were it not for having to leave to handle something horrific back home (I’m from the other side of the country), I would still be there. I woke up this morning aching to go back to the safety, the compassion, the grace, and the mercy of Peaks. The staff are beyond wonderful. They sat with me through the darkest day of my life, and did nothing but love me. I can’t describe how supported I felt. I could literally *feel* the empathy of the clinicians, nurses, and medical providers who sat with me and held space through the worst two panic attacks I’ve ever had.My housemates and I, and especially my roommate, wove a web of support and belonging I had never experienced. (Prior to admission, I literally could not get out of bed or do anything remotely social – I was even finding it hard to leave the house). I had the BEST time being part of a community, which gave me new confidence, and reassurance that I could get back into the game of life.I’m a therapist myself and I would 100% recommend Peaks as a committed, compassionate, caring healing space of the very highest quality. These people have their sh*t together.I have never encountered a place full of people who truly WANT to be there for you. Imagine being asked multiple times per day by staff if there is anything you need to feel supported. Being surrounded by people who know and care whether you’ve eaten that day, how you slept last night, and whether you need anything else to feel safe was pretty mind-boggling.I would trust Peaks to treat my nearest and dearest with zero hesitation. It will be the only mental health treatment center to which I refer my clients. Thank God for Peaks.Certainly I will forget to name some of the incredible staff, but Faith, Kinnley, Clint, Kara, Holly, Angela, Dr. Nichols, Sasha, JUDY, Cindy, Kyle, Pema, Julia, Chef, Taylor, Tara, Logan (x2), Heather, Eric, Marissa, the various therapists who led group, Bobby, Max in admissions, and Rachel – thank you for giving me a home, and at long last, an accurate mirror. I came into Peaks as a 47 year-old adult child, and left as a grown-up.Thank you, Peaks, for turning me back into me. Thank you for restoring my dignity. I will carry a piece of you in my heart always with immense gratitude. There is something spiritual in the particles and energy at this place that truly brought me back to life.
