What Is an Eating Disorder?
An eating disorder is a physical and mental health illness that occurs when someone becomes fixated on aspects of their body which leads to disturbances in their eating habits.
Less commonly, eating disorders do not involve concerns about body image but rather focus on other things like sensory issues related to food or fear of choking. There is a wide range of types of eating disorders and some can be life threatening if left untreated.
An eating disorder is considered a mental health condition and is included in the Diagnostic Statistical Manual (DSM). Mental health professionals use the DSM to diagnose mental illnesses. Most people can successfully recover from an eating disorder with proper treatment.

Types of Eating Disorders
There are several different types of eating disorders including:
- Anorexia Nervosa: When you severely restrict your food intake due to the belief that you are overweight. People who suffer from this disorder are often extremely underweight and carry the highest health risks of any of the other eating disorders.
- Binge Eating Disorder: When you experience something called out of control eating. This means you continue eating after you are full and eat large quantities in a small amount of time.
- Bulimia Nervosa: Marked by a period of binge eating followed by some form of purging whether through induced vomiting or laxatives.
- Pica: An eating disorder describing someone who eats things that are not considered food and do not have nutritional value. This may include eating things such as dirt or paint chips.
- Rumination: A condition where someone throws up partially digested or fully undigested food. Then, they chew and swallow the regurgitated food again or spit it out. This is different from bulimia in that the vomiting is involuntary rather than induced.
- ARFID Eating Disorder: Stands for avoidant or restrictive food intake disorder. People with this disorder are highly selective in what they eat and sometimes have very little interest in eating at all. This disorder is not linked to a desire to lose weight.
How Common Are Eating Disorders?
Disordered eating is fairly common throughout the United States. Some recent studies show prevalence rates of eating disorders. One report reveals that 9% of Americans will experience an eating disorder in their lifetime.
It also shows that the occurrence of eating disorders across the world increased from 3.5% to 7.8% between 2000 and 2018 and 22% of children and teenagers globally show signs of disordered eating.
The same report details that in a one year time span .32% of US females and .05% of US males will suffer from bulimia nervosa. In addition, .96% of US females and .26% of US males will suffer from binge eating disorder and .16% of US females and .09% of US males will suffer from anorexia nervosa.
Symptoms and Causes of Eating Disorders
Eating disorder symptoms and causes can be different depending on the specific type of disorder you have.
Anorexia symptoms include:
- Intense fear or anxiety around gaining weight
- Excessive exercise
- Low body weight
- Having a distorted body image (i.e., believing you are overweight when you are not)
- Fixation on body weight or shape
- Depression
- Anxiety
- Dry mouth
- Fatigue
Bulimia symptoms include:
- Induced vomiting or improper use of laxatives
- Excessive exercise
- Chronically sore throat
- Sensitive or decaying teeth
- Dehydration
Binge eating symptoms include:
- Eating large amounts of food in a short period
- Continuing to eat even when you are full
- Eating alone or in secret
- Feeling ashamed after eating food
- Frequently going on diets
ARFID symptoms include:
- Lack of interest in eating food
- Avoiding types of food based on sensory characteristics
- Concern about how you may feel after eating certain foods
- Nutritional deficiency
- Weight loss
While the exact cause of eating disorders is unknown, researchers believe that multiple factors may contribute to the development of these conditions. This includes your genetic and biological makeup, behavioral factors, psychological conditions and social influence.
How Do I Know if Someone Has an Eating Disorder?
You can look for several different signs if you are concerned that a loved one is struggling with an eating disorder.
Physical signs include:
- Weight loss
- Upset stomach
- Vomiting or diarrhea
- Sore throat
- Decaying teeth
- Thinning hair
- Dizziness or fainting
Psychological signs include:
- Depression
- Anxiety
- Fixation on body image or weight
- Withdrawing or isolating from others
- Confused or slow thinking
Behavioral signs include:
- Excessive exercise
- Skipping meals or eating very small amounts of food
- Frequent trips to the bathroom after eating
- Eating large amounts of food quickly
- Eating alone or in secret
Where Can I Find Information About Substance Abuse Treatment?
If you or a loved one is struggling with co-occurring substance use disorder and eating disorders there is hope. The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) has a 24 hour helpline to support anyone who needs help for mental health conditions, including eating disorders. You can call or text 988 to speak to someone about your treatment options.
You can also visit the Rehab.com website to find a list of treatment centers in your area that address substance use disorders. You can also search for programs that offer dual diagnosis care.
Speak to your doctor or healthcare provider about any symptoms of an eating disorder you are experiencing and ask for resources to help in your recovery.
Search for local support groups and meetings that you can attend for free to link up with others navigating a similar journey.
What Type of Treatment is Recommended for Eating Disorders and Co-Occurring SUD?
Eating disorder treatment varies based on the type of eating disorder you have and the severity of your symptoms.
Some of the treatments you can expect in all cases include:
- Regular meetings with a registered dietician to discuss and monitor your nutritional intake and your attitudes toward diet and exercise
- Therapeutic intervention with a mental health provider to manage psychological symptoms and learn coping skills
- Medical monitoring by professional staff to ensure your physical health is maintained
Anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa and binge eating disorder treatment may also include medication to treat some of your symptoms. Your care team may also recommend medications for any co-occurring mental health issues such as anxiety or depression.
Inpatient treatment may be necessary if your symptoms are severe enough to need around the clock care and monitoring for some time. Intensive outpatient or standard outpatient care will be used for those in a more stable physical and psychological state.
Alongside treatment for your eating disorder, a specialized dual diagnosis care facility will offer evidence-based care to address your substance use disorder.
This may include medically supervised detox to facilitate your safe withdrawal from drugs and alcohol and inpatient rehabilitation to support you in early recovery through robust supervision and clinical care.
If you are medically stable or you have completed inpatient treatment for co-occurring substance use disorder and eating disorder, you may enroll in an outpatient treatment program to provide continuing care tailored to your individual needs.

I would highly recommend Right Path Recovery to my family, friends, and anyone desiring to get sober and drug free. I have relapsed several times in the past before I went to Right Path and have been in other inpatient rehab treatment centers. My experience with Right Path Recovery has changed my life. The education and 12 step focus along with the skilled and caring staff, small group setting and accountability has made a huge difference. RCA saved my life. I came here in April and I would not be here if it wasn’t for this center. For the first time in decades I finally have my life back. The group facilitators were great and the staff care about you getting better! If you are an addict or alcoholic this is a place for you to come heal and recover! This place changed my life. It was an unbelievable experience to say the least. The staff in every department were great, from the cooks, to nursing, to RA’s (big props to Ms. April!) to housekeeping to the therapists (I owe alot to my man Emmett!). They not only helped guide me to a new way of thinking and aspect but to unload alot of weight i carried for years. Its Day 101 and i feel like a better man each day. Not to mention the connections! i’m not only close to the guys i roomed with in my cabin, but am apart of a group chat of about 20 people from my stay and we all check in still and hold our own weekly meetings.
I would 100% suggest this to anyone who came to me looking for help. Thank you Skywood for giving me the tools i needed to fight this everyday battle.
I hope to one day come back as an alumni and share my experience and sober journey.

Skywood was the best thing I could do for my sobriety! It was here where I got the tools to rebuild the house that I had burned to the ground… When I left I had rebuilt the frame for my life. When I came into Elan I was broken, I had no trust in rehab centers and they changed my way of thinking. They earned my trust and helped me save my life. The staff is truly the best hand picked employees a rehab center could have. All the therapists are phenomenal in what they do, they have all helped me and have gave me the criteria to live a honest clean sober life. The Techs are wonderful they’re so welcoming and do anything to make you comfortable, the lead techs Keri & Scott are so insightful. The family program that the therapist Lystra conducted was the most HEALING EXPERIENCE and has helped with a lifetime worth of damage. We keep in contact weekly and it’s the most beautiful relationship I’ve bonded with a therapist, thank you Lystra for all you do. The Director Barbara I will be forever grateful for she always made time to be there for me. The Clinical Medical staff knows what they are talking about and very understanding. Pastor Craig is the best motivational staff member he’s made a world of a difference in my life. Diane’s groups are AMAZING! My name is Susan, and I’m a recovering alcoholic and addict. I recently completed a stay at Restore Detox in Poway, and I can honestly say they helped save my life.
Restore is truly a special place. The home is beautiful and peaceful, set up to host only six clients at a time, which creates an intimate, family-like atmosphere. From the moment I walked in, I felt safe, supported, and understood. The staff is not only professional and knowledgeable, but they are also compassionate and genuinely invested in each person’s recovery.
The amenities at Restore go far beyond what I expected. There’s a pool, hot tub, and even a pickleball court right on the property. They also bring in a personal trainer and offer yoga sessions, which really helped me reconnect with my body and start healing physically as well as emotionally. The combination of physical activity, relaxation, and structure made a huge difference in my recovery process.
The group sessions were incredibly helpful and are led by staff who truly care. Even after leaving, I still attend groups because I’ve found a strong sense of community there. Restore didn’t just help me detox—they gave me tools, hope, and a new beginning.

I was recently treated at Restore Detox Center and it changed my life. The staff was friendly, knowledgeable and very helpful. I met and made friends with fellow recovery patients. It’s in a beautiful facility in the suburbs of San Diego. Restore has a wonderful, peaceful recovery environment with all the nice living amenities. It feels like one big family there. They give you all the tools you need to live a happy, productive, prosperous sober life. And the proprietor of Restore Detox Center, Steven Ginsburg, is a great guy that really cares about helping people. I’d recommend Restore Detox Center to anybody that needs help.

And the 3 months that I was here, I learned a lot about myself. I dealt with trauma, wrote a good buy letter to each and every trauma I ever endured. I dealt with the passing of my father, while I was in the program. The love and support from the staff and the clients, help me to navigate this trying time. I was able to go to outings, alumni events; pool party volleyball speaker meeting. I was taking to a meeting a day. And best of all I was given all the tools that I need to be able to live my life clean and to handle any situation that comes my way without using! I’ll be forever grateful to cornerstone and for all the amazing, kind-hearted, genuine, down to earth family – I could have ever imagined to hope for! I couldn’t be more impressed with this treatment center! My sister graduated their program, and today is her 4 year sober anniversary. I’ve seen such a positive change in her since then. I was reminded today of the huge hand they had in helping her. The staff at the rehab care for her and she’s still in contact with many of them til this day. Where do I begin? Not only was this my first-ever rehabilitation experience, but it was also the most eye-opening experience I have ever had. I was uncertain about what to expect and, ultimately, I made the best decision possible. The staff, whom I refer to as specialists, made me feel immediately at home, and my counselor, Mike, went above and beyond in his duties. The facility offers numerous perks, including exceptional cuisine, impeccable grounds, and a spectacular overall atmosphere. I must note that the nurses are exceedingly polite and attentive to their patients’ needs, although I did find it somewhat disappointing that doctor visits were limited to only once. Personally, I did not experience any significant issues during my stay, aside from one supervisor who, I discovered, was not particularly friendly to either patients or staff. One of the highlights of the facility is the presence of Monarch butterflies, which are hatched on-site. Deb, one of the specialists, consistently displayed a warm and welcoming smile that brightened everyone’s day. Marworth offers a wide range of activities to keep patients engaged, as well as tailored treatment plans for individuals requiring additional support. I commend the facility on its outstanding work.

I went to Marworth for the first time after relapsing after about 5 years sober. When I went there I was a wildly unpleasant person to be around. I hated the world and myself. I was truly terrible to most of the staff. My behavior was argumentative, smug and mean at best. They still welcomed me back 3 more times. I was eventually given Amy as my primary counselor and, she not only took the time to try and understand why I was like that but, she also challenged me to be better. Over my time there I had the chance to get to know the staff very well. They’re good people. Who genuinely want to help people get to the life they’re meant to have. The specialists, rec team, cafeteria workers,house keeping,security(the list goes on and on)are wonderful. That’s what makes Marworth great. It’s not the amenities. It’s not the rock climbing wall, gym, cafeteria, or anything else you can think of. It’s the people that make this place what it is. Is it perfect? Absolutely not, but nothing is. When I went in there looking for all the things that bothered me, I got nothing out of it. When I allowed them to help me, I got everything out of it.

This place and it’s staff have been nothing but wonderful to me. I came here scared of the thought of going to rehab but it all changed when I met Paul at the airport to Nikki and Christian at the house doing intakes. That’s to name a few of the staff who were basically in my shoes at one point in their lives so they know and understand us clients and where we’re coming from. Restorations has helped me regain my old sober self little by little and one day at a time. Roc is the man and I am forever grateful for everything he’s done for me in my time here in rehab. I recommend this place to everyone thanks to restorations I now have 109 days clean and I plan to stay that way roc the program manager is the most compassionate person I know he genuinely cares about all clients that come here and honestly all the staff are wonderful and make it feel welcoming and truly understand our needs it’s called restorations for a reason because they make sure all of us is restored I have been to several treatment facilities before this one and I can say this is by far the best one I have ever been too thank you restorations for helping me claim my life back!!!!!!!

18+ years in recovery, one day at a time thanks to Caron Treatment Centers. I grew up in a loving home in the suburbs of Philadelphia. I always felt different than my peers, and this was compounded by relentless teasing at school. I started drinking when I was 14, trying to fit in and numb the pain of feeling like an outsider. By the time I was in college, my substance use escalated to harder drugs like cocaine and eventually, crystal meth. I moved on from beer pong with my fraternity to life in the fast lane with party drugs and the club scene.
Following graduation, my life was chaotic. Being in the event planning profession, my behavior was tolerated. Often late to work, my performance was inconsistent, and no one could rely on me. I was not functioning. When my addiction led to two DUIs, jail time, and suicide attempts, I faced a sobering reality that I desperately needed help. My time in jail was a wake-up call, but then I violated my house arrest and pleaded for help. Rather than return to jail, my parole officer allowed me to get help. My family, who always supported me, set firm boundaries and helped me get into Caron. This changed my life. Today I am an event professional, living a fulfilling life and helping others how I can. I serve on several non-profit boards, including having the honor of being Vice Chair of the Caron Greater Philadelphia Regional Advisory Board as well as part of the Caron Treatment Committee and Chairing the annual Gala Planning Committee. Caron is so important to me that I have made Magic Mountain part of my legacy planning as a recent inductee to the Chit Chat Society.

I went to Structure House in 2019. I can’t say enough about it. It helped me get into shape with the exercise classes and equipment. It helped me to develop healthy eating habits and because I stayed the whole month, I was able to stop my sweet cravings. In addition the classes taught me some great skills to catch myself when I want to go back to bad habits.
I am actually 20lbs lighter now then when I was when I left (144lbs) and now in my husband has lost weight from the skills I learnt when there.
My diabetes is a little better.

Overall had a great experience here with my birth. Only reason I’m not giving 5 stars is my first nurse seemed so out of it like she was either having an off day or she was on something. She messed up my IV so bad I was gushing blood everywhere. Another reason was the anesthesiologist who did my epidural, I believe his name was Jim or something. He had a really bad attitude the whole time, acting mad at me for the conditions I was in. I only cried getting it done because of how he was treating me the whole time. The anesthesiologist who took care of me during my c-section though was beyond amazing!!! I was shaking from anxiety and he was comforting me the whole time, even was on top of taking care of me when I threw up afterwards. I think the first guy needs to learn what’s appropriate to say to women who are having severe labor pains and how to treat them. The comments about having terrible back anatomy for my age truly pissed me off.

I recently had an experience at Banner Del E Webb Medical Center, and I am compelled to share what an absolutely exceptional facility it is. From the moment I arrived, the level of care, professionalism, and compassion was truly outstanding, earning them a well-deserved five stars.
The staff, from the receptionists to the nurses, doctors, and support personnel, were all incredibly kind, attentive, and efficient. Everyone I encountered went above and beyond to ensure my comfort and provide clear, reassuring information. It’s evident that every team member is dedicated to patient well-being.
