About His House Recovery Home
Before closing, His House Recovery Home, located in Bowling Green, Kentucky, was a community resource for adult men who needed help recovering from substance use disorders (SUD). Bowling Green offers many options for help, including local 12-step meetings and other recovery support programs. His House was a long term addiction treatment resource that fit right into this setting.
Strong Focus on the Twelve Steps
The Twelve Step program was a big part of daily life. Clients went to regular meetings and worked with a sponsor. I noticed they also required participation in an in-house education series that walked them through the Twelve Steps, which would have been helpful, especially for men new to structured recovery programs.
Accountability and Personalized Support
Each week, clients checked in with staff to talk about any challenges they were facing. Drug testing was random. Staff stayed in touch with courts, probation officers, and other agencies to keep them informed about their clients’ progress.
I appreciate that they offered help beyond addiction recovery. When someone needed extra help, they were referred to other resources like DUI classes, anger management, or mental health care.
A Phased Treatment Model
The program was divided into three phases, each helping clients become more independent. In the beginning, there were restrictions on leaving the home, but clients could still attend appointments and church with staff approval. As they moved forward, they gained more freedom, like overnight passes, but still had to stay on top of their meetings, rent, and recovery work.
Education was an important component of the recovery program. If a client didn’t have one, they were required to work toward their GED, which I don’t see as often as I’d like in recovery programs.
For many, like one former client who shared that their time there helped lay a solid foundation for their recovery, His House Recovery Home was truly life-changing. Although the program has closed, it made a lasting impact in the Bowling Green community.

Treatments
Substance rehabs focus on helping individuals recover from substance abuse, including alcohol and drug addiction (both illegal and prescription drugs). They often include the opportunity to engage in both individual as well as group therapy.
Clinical Services
Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.
In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.
