What Are Antidepressants?
Antidepressants are prescription medications that are used to treat a range of mood disorders and chronic pain conditions, including major depressive disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, bipolar disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), panic disorder, and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). In some cases, antidepressants are also prescribed as part of addiction treatment, when mental health is a concern. They work by acting on neurotransmitters — the chemical messengers that deliver information between neurons, or brain cells.
Depending on the type of antidepressant, these prescription medications either increase the release or block the reabsorption of the neurotransmitters norepinephrine, serotonin, dopamine, or in some cases, a mixture of the above.
Available by prescription through a physician, antidepressants are one of the most frequently prescribed types of prescription drugs. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that between 2015–2018, 13.2% of Americans aged 18 and over reported taking antidepressant medication in the past 30 days – a 3.2% increase from the previous decade. Within the same study, the CDC found a substantial increase in antidepressant use primarily amongst women.

How Do Antidepressant Medications Work?
Antidepressants can be effective in treating depression and other mood disorders, however, results vary based on the individual patient and the type of antidepressants being used. With that being said, a 2016 case study published in The Lancet Medical Journal, found that the twenty-one most commonly prescribed antidepressant medications were more effective than placebo for adults with major depressive disorder.
While antidepressants do not cure mental health conditions such as major depressive disorder or generalized anxiety disorder, they can be a helpful tool when combined with psychotherapy as part of a full treatment plan.
Types Of Antidepressants
When prescribing an antidepressant medication, physicians will take into account a variety of different factors, including individual symptoms, possible side effects, interactions with other medication, pregnancy or breastfeeding, cost and healthcare coverage, and whether a particular medication has worked for a close relative.
There are six antidepressant medications that work in slightly different ways and have different side effects.
Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRIs)
Currently, the most popular and commonly prescribed class of antidepressant drugs, SSRIs work by flooding the nervous system with serotonin. SSRIs are known to have fewer side effects than other antidepressants, therefore, they are commonly prescribed for depression and other mental health conditions including anxiety disorders, OCD and PTSD. Popular SSRI brand names include Paxil (Paroxetine), Prozac (Fluoxetine), Zoloft (Sertraline), Celexa (Citalopram), and Lexapro (Escitalopram).
Serotonin and Norepinephrine Reuptake Inhibitors (SNRIs)
Similar to SSRIs, norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors change or reduce the absorption of serotonin and norepinephrine. This helps elevate and stabilize mood, as there is more of the neurotransmitter available. SNRIs are often prescribed to treat depression since they have fewer side effects than other antidepressant drugs. Popular brand names include Cymbalta (duloxetine) and Effexor (venlafaxine).
Norepinephrine and Dopamine Reuptake Inhibitors (NDRIs)
While not as popular as SSRIs and SNRIs, norepinephrine and dopamine reuptake inhibitors work similarly by acting on norepinephrine and dopamine receptors to reduce absorption. Popular brand names include Wellbutrin, which has the generic name bupropion. While NDRIs are considered antidepressant medications, they’re also prescribed to help people who are suffering from a nicotine addiction to quit smoking.
Tricyclic Antidepressants (TCAs)
TCAs are a class of antidepressant medications that help increase the number of neurotransmitters like serotonin, dopamine, and norepinephrine that are released in the brain. While they have more side effects than newer antidepressant drugs like SSRIs and SNRIs, doctors will still sometimes prescribe them to individuals who have tried other antidepressant medications and have not found them to be effective. Popular brand names include Anafranil (clomipramine), Asendin (amoxapine), Elavil (amitriptyline), Norpramin (desipramine), and Pamelor (nortriptyline).
Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitors (MAOIs)
Among the first antidepressant medications developed, monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) work by inhibiting the activity of the monoamine oxidase enzyme family. MAOIs can cause serious side effects, including interactions with other drugs and food. However, they can be helpful to people who have not experienced benefits from other antidepressant medications. They also have been shown to be effective in the treatment of bipolar disorder, OCD, and Parkinson’s disease. Popular brand names include Marplan (isocarboxazid), Nardil (phenelzine), Ensam (selegiline), and Parnate (tranylcypromine).
Noradrenaline and Specific Serotonergic Antidepressants (NaSSAs)
While SSRIs are the most commonly prescribed antidepressant medications, not everyone can take them. In this case, a physician may prescribe NaSSAs. Noradrenaline and specific serotonergic antidepressants treat depression by increasing the amount of noradrenaline and serotonin in the synaptic cleft and blocking some serotonin receptors. The side effects of NASSAs are similar to those of SSRIs, but they’re thought to cause fewer problems with sexual dysfunction. The most commonly prescribed antidepressant medication in this class is Remeron (mirtazapine).
Side Effects of Antidepressants
Antidepressants are a key part of treating depression, anxiety, and other mental conditions, however, like any prescription medication, they can cause some side effects. Some of these side effects are believed to be a direct result of the antidepressant medication’s effect on the brain and tend to be similar amongst drugs in the same class. Common examples of antidepressant side effects include dry mouth, dizziness, headaches, restlessness, and issues with sexual dysfunction. While these conditions are frequently perceived as side effects of antidepressants, some of them can be caused by depression itself.
Whether or not someone has side effects and the nature of the symptoms depends on the antidepressant medication, the dose, and how long they’ve been taking the medication. Some side effects can be more acute when a person first starts taking an antidepressant medication.
Common antidepressant side effects include:
- Constipation
- Dizziness
- Dry mouth
- Drowsiness
- Diarrhea
- Difficulty sleeping
- Headaches
- Irritability
- Increased sweating
- Nausea and vomiting
- Panic attacks
- Restlessness
- Sexual problems
- Vision problems
- Trouble urinating
- Weight gain or loss
- Sudden decreases in blood pressure when transitioning from sitting to standing
While much less common, other side effects include possible heart issues, seizures, liver damage, and suicidal thoughts or behaviors.
Although there are risks and side effects associated with taking antidepressants, they help many people live more fulfilling and functional lives.
Antidepressants and Addiction Treatment
Substance use disorders are overrepresented among individuals with mental illnesses such as depression and anxiety. In fact, an estimated 32% of individuals with major depressive disorder also have substance use disorders.
Introduced by the World Health Organization in the mid-1990s, the term dual diagnosis refers to the co-occurrence of a substance use disorder with mental illness, which is also known as co-occurring disorders. Data suggest that individuals with co-occurring substance abuse and mental health conditions are more likely to have a positive outcome if they receive treatment for both conditions simultaneously, which typically involves a combination of antidepressants and therapy.
While antidepressant abuse is possible, a 2019 study found that SSRIs are effective in treating co-occurring mental health and substance abuse disorders, especially when addiction treatment options pair antidepressant drugs with psychotherapy.
In addition to helping treat co-occurring mental health conditions, antidepressant medications are used in addiction treatment to help ease withdrawal symptoms including body pain and insomnia, and provide mood elevation during the drug and alcohol detox process.
Are Antidepressants Addictive?
Medical professionals generally do not consider Antidepressants to be addictive in the traditional sense. However, antidepressants can cause physical dependence, as evidenced by the withdrawal symptoms that occur when someone suddenly reduces their dose or stops using antidepressants altogether.
Unlike prescription painkillers or illicit drugs such as heroin or cocaine, antidepressants don’t have the euphoric effects or “high” that other drugs have. As a result, a person will not experience acute cravings for antidepressants when they are without them.
With that being said, if someone has used the same antidepressant over a long period of time, it is possible to develop a passive tolerance to the point where the medication stops working. This may require them to increase their dosage or change their medication to better address their mental health needs. The Mayo Clinic refers to this phenomena as the “poop out effect” or antidepressant tolerance, which is also known as tachyphylaxis.
If an antidepressant stops working, it could mean that the body has adjusted to changes in neurotransmitter levels and is now opposing shifts that antidepressants cause, making the medication less effective. However, other factors can also influence the effectiveness of a particular antidepressant, including worsening depression, new medications, or other medical conditions such as hypothyroidism, which can contribute to depression.
Antidepressant Withdrawal Symptoms
While addiction is rare, if a person takes antidepressants for an extended period of time, their body can become physically dependent on them. As a result, individuals may experience withdrawal symptoms when they cease taking antidepressants. According to a study published in the British Journal of Psychiatry, patients whose SSRIs were abruptly replaced with a placebo experienced a host of withdrawal symptoms including dizziness, fatigue, insomnia, headaches, and flu-like symptoms, as well as irritability, aggression, anxiety, panic attacks, and noticeable mood changes. Depending on the kind of antidepressant used, a 2018 study published in The Primary Care Companion for CNS Disorders also found that some patients experienced intermittent “brain zaps,” a sensation that patients describe as a jolt of electricity in the brain.
According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), up to 80% of people who abruptly discontinue antidepressant use experience some withdrawal symptoms or discontinuation syndrome, a term used to describe a range of symptoms that may occur when patients discontinue taking SSRIs or SNRIs.
Common antidepressant withdrawal symptoms include the following:
- Agitation
- Aggression
- Anxiety
- Abdominal cramping
- Depression
- Daydreaming
- Diarrhea
- Dizziness
- Insomnia
- Headaches
- Flu-like symptoms
- Excessive nightmares
- Fatigue
- Low mood
- Nausea
- Panic attacks
- Vomiting
A 2019 study on antidepressant withdrawal also found other common symptoms of antidepressant withdrawal and discontinuation syndrome may include:
- Cognitive problems
- Hallucinations
- Itchiness
- Muscle tension or pain
- Ringing in the ears
- Sensations that feel like jolts or zaps of electricity in the body or brain
- Taste changes
- Tremors
- Vision problems
How to Detox From Antidepressants
To avoid or lessen antidepressant withdrawal symptoms, the American Psychological Association recommends that people do not stop taking antidepressants abruptly. Instead, people should gradually reduce their dose of antidepressant medications by tapering off their antidepressant use over several weeks.
When considering tapering off antidepressants, it’s important to do so under the guidance and supervision of a doctor. Antidepressant withdrawal symptoms have been linked to specific drug’s elimination half-life, a measure of how long it takes for half of the drug to be metabolized and eliminated from the body. Depending on the type of antidepressant, some may require a different tapering-off period than others. For example, SSRIs like Paxil (paroxetine), which has a half-life of about 24 hours, should be tapered down over a more extended period of time as compared to other prescription drugs like Prozac (fluoxetine), which has a longer half-life of up to four days.
Antidepressant Abuse
Although the majority of people use antidepressants as prescribed to treat mental health conditions such as anxiety and depression, antidepressant abuse and misuse are still possible.
Antidepressants accumulate slowly in the brain, therefore it can take up to a month to feel the effects of antidepressants. During this time, some people will misuse antidepressants by taking higher than recommended doses thinking it will expedite or enhance the effects of their prescription medication.
Wellbutrin
In other cases, antidepressants are used as a substitute when other drugs are not available. For example, research shows a documented prevalence of Wellbutrin abuse within incarcerated populations. While Wellbutrin (bupropion) abuse hasn’t been thoroughly studied, data suggests that high doses of the drug can create stimulant-like effects, similar to cocaine or amphetamines, including euphoria, increased energy, and an inability to fall asleep. However, misusing Wellbutrin in high doses can increase a person’s risk of seizure, cardiac problems, and psychosis.
SSRIs and SNRIs
While less common, a small number of case studies also suggest that taking high doses of SSRIs and SNRIs can create a sense of euphoria similar to amphetamines. However, abusing SSRIs and SNRIs is risky and has been linked to hypertensive crises, seizures, and serotonin syndrome; a serious and potentially life-threatening drug interaction.
TCA
Despite the limited use of TCAs, TCA-overdose-associated hospitalizations and fatalities are on the rise, according to a 2022 study. When abused in high doses, TCAs may cause confusion, dissociation, delirium, seizures, heart rhythm abnormalities, low blood pressure, and even death.
Mixing Antidepressants with Drugs and Alcohol
It’s not uncommon for people to combine antidepressant medication with other drugs and alcohol to amplify feelings of sedation. Those who also struggle with a substance use disorder may combine antidepressants with other substances such as marijuana or opioids to self-medicate, leading to dangerous, potentially life-threatening outcomes, including overdose.
While doctors recommend avoiding alcohol when taking antidepressants, it’s one of the most commonly combined substances. Alcohol is a nervous system depressant. Combining alcohol with antidepressant medication can worsen symptoms of depression while causing excessive drowsiness and dizziness. Consuming alcohol while taking antidepressants can result in serious physical and mental health issues, including:
- High blood pressure
- Intense sedation
- Increased depression and anxiety
- Impaired coordination
For the same reasons, those taking antidepressants should abstain from using cannabis and illicit substances such as cocaine, heroin, ketamine, and amphetamines.
Antidepressant Overdose
Similar to other prescription medications, it’s possible to overdose on antidepressant drugs if you take them in high doses. The risk of overdose increases if antidepressant medications are mixed with alcohol or other substances. In severe cases, these antidepressant overdoses can be fatal.
A review published in the Emergency Medicine Journal found that TCA overdoses are the most common form of antidepressant overdose. They also tend to be the most severe. In fact, a 2017 report from the American Association of Poison Control Centers (AAPCC) found tricyclic antidepressants are among the top 25 medications linked with the highest number of deaths from overdose. Other classes of antidepressant medications such as SSRIs and SNRIs were not featured on that list.
A person experiencing an antidepressant overdose will have mild to severe symptoms, depending on the type of antidepressant taken, the quantity, and whether they have been mixed with drugs or alcohol.
Common antidepressant overdose symptoms include the following:
- Blurred vision
- Body tremors or shaky limbs
- Confusion
- Dilated pupils
- Drowsiness
- Fever
- Headache
- High blood pressure
- Nausea
- Vomiting
Severe symptoms of an antidepressant overdose include:
- Cardiac arrest
- Coma
- Hallucinations
- Low blood pressure
- Rapid heartbeat
- Shaking
- Seizures
Depending on the factors outlined above, these symptoms may be fatal. If a suspected antidepressant overdose has occurred, it’s important that the person seek emergency medical attention immediately.
Detox and Rehabilitation for Antidepressant Abuse
As outlined above, stopping antidepressants abruptly can lead to a host of different withdrawal symptoms. Even if you’re not abusing antidepressants, it’s still important to seek medical attention. A physician can create a taper-off schedule for antidepressant use that helps mitigate unwanted withdrawal symptoms.
While antidepressant abuse isn’t very common it does still occur, and it can lead to very dangerous outcomes. If you or a loved one are unable to stop misusing antidepressants or have experienced an antidepressant overdose, you may need treatment.

This place quite literally saved my life. I struggled for many years with substance abuse. I tried for several years to get clean on my own but was never successful. I have nothing but great things to say about the Plymouth House if you are serious about wanting to heal yourself. Detox and Rehab are never an easy decision. You know that you want to better yourself but the process is never an easy one. The staff and clinicians at PH are very understanding non judgemental. Some have been in the trenches at times which makes the care and help they offer much easier. The food is great and they are truly genuine across the board not to mention you couldn’t ask for a more tranquil environment to heal yourself. This was my second tine in DFC outpatient treatment, the reason I chose DFC was their teaching, there, client, and the friendly environment. I have been to many treatment centers in my past when I knew in my heart I was serious about recovering from drugs and alcohol. There was no other place that I wanted to go other than Design For Change. They give group and individual counseling tailored for the individual which helped me tremendously. I have attended the Family Workshop many times. It is so amazing and has helped me so much. Dealing with addicted loved ones is so hard. You must have a support system to help you navigate all of the scary, stressful heartbreaking realities of this disease. The Design For Change staff have become like family to me. The 90 days I spent at Next Step Recovery may very well be the most important decision of my life. Dealing with substance abuse most of my life then achieving sobriety for a decade and then losing it again. I’ve spent 5 years trying to get back to where I was but just kept failing. In desperation I came to Next Step for 30 days of treatment and later decided to complete a full 90 days of treatment. Next Step is simply different. The program and its environment were perfect for my needs. The staff is incredible and truly care. All their therapists are second to none. The housing environment blew my expectations away with a comfortable home (not a compound) combination of safety and recovery while maintaining many freedoms like going to the gym, grocery shopping and cooking, river rafting, walks through beautiful Asheville. I even got a cool job towards the end. Next Step just offered this incredible treatment program while offering the supported opportunity to to practice normal life with out substance abuse. Not really how I imagined this “treatment”. experience would be. No it was ten times better! Most relaxed I’ve ever been in a long time.
Months later im back home with my family and everything thing is going great! And when things are not great I can handle it using the tools that Next Step gave me.

I would like to thank God for sending me to BOCA Recovery Center. When I first got there I couldn’t believe it. The place was immaculate. Everything was in order, From the staff to the cleanliness. The snack bar was always full. They even had their own drink machine. The nurse is always on duty. Anytime you need your medicine you got it. No matter the time. My bedroom had a flat screen TV with Netflix, Amazon Prime, Tubi, Pluto TV and much more. They have community cigarettes, Basketball Court and a Gazebo! I couldn’t believe this place! They have a private chef! They feed you three times a day all hot meals. You also can also go to group. They have a big screen TV in the common area. So if you want to talk and watch TV you can! I truly loved this place. During my time here, I struggled a lot the first couple weeks, and that was intentional on the programs part. It’s not supposed to be easy and you can adjust to the difficult aspects by truly letting go of wanting to control and accepting why you came to get help. I grew more here in a month than I ever could have in the real world.
I loved the staff, the doctors, the clinicians, the nurses, and my housemates. I never thought I’d say this but I actually miss being here! The forced structure was comforting and having small responsibilities daily helped me stay accountable. I miss making my bed after breakfast and tending to my little plant. I miss racing to the kitchen after group before 9 am hit so I could have one last cup of coffee. I miss that. I miss making things special as opposed to just having carte Blanche to drink caffeine whenever I want now, it takes the meaning out of the actions we choose when we live with no rules or structure.
The content of learning was helpful, and yes at times repetitious, but that’s how we change. Changing isn’t learning something then doing it perfect the next day. It is tedious amounts of reps and time that add up to meaningful change, it’s not glamorous like the world makes change seem. This program is HARD. And that’s what I wanted. I wanted challenge, I wanted growth, and I was sick and tired of being tired. This time in my life I decided I wasn’t the expert on how to do things considering how badly things were going. Please know that if it’s hard or you think it should be your way, it’s okay to let go and let them be the experts in their field. I am forever changed from this place, and I hope you will be too. And I am better for it because of this place, the friendships and love from staff alike.❤️

It was a difficult and impulsive decision to throw myself into treatment, I honestly went to the first place that said they had a bed, and I was beyond lucky that that place was White Sands Plant City.
The staff is incredible, the course selection was diverse and informative. The culinary team works very hard and the food was excellent, especially considering 3 meals a day for that many people.
I was scared going in, I had no idea what to expect. It was much less clinical than I thought and that is a good thing! Still with constant medical care, nurses and doctors if you had questions or concerns.
The BHT’s, Case Workers, and Discharge, all were so personable with every single patient, and it was easy to feel like a part of the community almost instantly.
Mostly I want to shout out KeSaundra, she really helped me process my feelings and always was there to listen. Gonna make you proud girl!
This was one of the most moving experiences of my life, and I will always be grateful for White Sands.

This place goes above and beyond for its clients. Let’s just say I’ve been there more than once on my road to recovery. The staff have become my second family. They have an alumni person that’s reaches out to clients to follow up after treatment and I call her my guardian angel. Great place to heal and grow. The staff care and are willing to help if you let them. Educational and useful groups that prepare you for relapse prevention and coping skills etc. Definitely recommend if you or a loved one are looking for a treatment center that CARE about their clients.

I would just like to state how happy I was with my stay and experience at White Sands treatment center in Fort Myers. The facility is very nice and the staff are all friendly, professional and caring. From my caseworker Janette, who was super supportive and just amazing, to my Therapist Morgan, counselor Kaley, all the techs, health & nursing, house services, dining staff and maintenance, everyone was incredibly helpful and kind.
