I am a former employee and current contractor at Milestones Ranch Malibu, having been Clinical Director in the past and presently working as a group therapist. But more to the point, I am a huge fan of Milestones. Owned and operated by the incredibly caring and talented social worker Denise Klein and her daughter Savannah Ganje, Milestones has provided in-depth assistance to clients and families for the past 20 plus years.I have seen hundreds of clients benefit from the various evidence-based modalities utilized by the Milestones clinical staff including dynamic and CBT therapy, hypnotherapy, group therapy, addiction counseling and EMDR as well as adjunct services including psychiatry, sound bath, music therapy, and more.In addition to myself, there are other long-time staff members including Celeste Racicot, Ron Borczon, and Joey Tabbanella. It s always a positive sign when staff members sign on for the long haul it shows that they love the family atmosphere, the good vibes, the sense of helping people in a program that is all about integrity, warmth and expert care.Employees are supervised and trained by Denise, Savannah, Celeste and Amber to ensure that meals are prepared on time, paychecks delivered on time and that the facility sparkles and shines. Milestones is a fantastic training ground for those interested in working in the fields of psychology and/or recovery. I often say that after a stint at Milestones, every employee is ready to run their own rehab center! Employees who are dedicated, hardworking and client-centered flourish in the Milestones milieu. But what makes Milestones stand out, and why I continue on with this amazing program is notwithstanding the clinical knowledge and practice, or the amenities, food, and cozy rooms - is the setting. It s a small facility, designed purposely to be intimate so as to give clients individualized attention on a beautiful Malibu ranch. Milestones is unique.Oh, one last thing. Milestones is the kind of place where if you call admissions and they think you are not a fit for them or that there is a program more suited to your needs, they will never try to sell you or convince you to come to Milestones but instead give you referrals to other well-respected and effective programs. Now that s integrity!

Approaching a subject as heavy as trauma and addiction, making a choice on where to go can be a bit daunting. I was assured by people close to me that work in that field that Milestones Ranch was the perfect place for me. Upon arrival I knew this to be true. The team of people Denise Klein (owner) and her daughter Savanah have assembled is incredible. From the therapists to the techs to even the house cleaning personnel allows for an environment of safety and vulnerability. My experience there was truly life changing. Even after leaving I still benefit from the feeling I am part of a family that supported me through one of the most difficult things I ve ever had to do. I appreciate the wellness checks from everyone checking on my progress and reminders that I can always count on the people of this amazing place . Would also be remiss to not mention the location is beautiful Tucked away in the hills of Malibu above Zuma Beach. Was able to find a peace and tranquility I have needed for a long time. I miss being there everyday. But they provided me with tools to be more equipped to walk through any situation s and have agency in my life again. Thank you thank you thank you to Denise and the entire staffWith love and gratitude of course :)

Milestones absolutely saved my life! When I came there, every single relationship in my life was broken. I was completely lost and caught in a terrible cycle of self-destruction.The love and care that I received from the team at Milestones turned that around for me in 2 short months. The owners, administrators, therapists & group facilitators & the amazing team of techs, care so deeply about helping people and have carefully crafted a program that makes that help accessible to anyone.Even though I was in such a dark place when I arrived there, I wasn't particularly open to the help. I felt that I was being punished by my family and was incredibly resistant to the idea that any part of it was supposed to be helpful or healing for me.Within a couple of days, my view point on that completely changed. The location is beautiful, the people are wonderful and comforting, so I couldn't help but relax and let the light in.They helped me repair relationships in my life that were so badly damaged that I thought they were ruined forever. Two years later, I'm in a better place than I've ever been with all of those people. I'm able to spend as much time with my daughter as I want. I've got a good job doing what I love and have been living in my own place for the last year. My life has turned around in every way and I owe that all to Milestones. If you, or anyone you love, is in distress and struggling with addiction and mental health issues, Milestones is hands down the #1 place to bring them to heal and reclaim their life.

Accepted Insurance

Milestones Ranch Malibu works with several private insurance providers and also accepts private payments when possible, please contact to verify your specific insurance provider.

Other Forms of Payment

Private insurance refers to any kind of healthcare coverage that isn't from the state or federal government. This includes individual and family plans offered by an employer or purchased from the Insurance Marketplace. Every plan will have different requirements and out of pocket costs so be sure to get the full details before you start treatment.

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Sliding scale payments are based on a client's income and family size. The goal is to make treatment affordable to everyone. By taking these factors into account, addiction recovery care providers help ensure that your treatment does not become a financial burden to you or your family, eliminating one barrier to care.

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

aftercare iconAftercare Support
Rehab aftercare programs offer clients in addiction recovery a robust continuum of care after clients have completed active treatment. These services address recovery as a life-long process and are designed to evolve with clients' changing needs. Clients may partner with their case managers and/or addiction recovery team to identify the rehab aftercare services that are right for them. They may receive career counseling, housing assistance, peer coaching, 12 step program induction, among many other services.
12-step icon12-Step
12-step programs are addiction recovery models based on Alcoholics Anonymous (AA). A number of substance abuse programs (including some drug and alcohol rehab centers) use the 12 steps as a basis for treatment. Beginning steps involve admitting powerlessness over the addiction and creating a spiritual basis for recovery. Middle steps including making direct amends to those who've been hurt by the addiction, and the final step is to assist others in addiction recovery in the same way. 12-Step offshoots including Narcotics Anonymous (NA), Cocaine Anonymous (CA), Dual Recovery Anonymous (DRA), Sex and Love Addicts Anonymous (SLAA) and Gamblers Anonymous (GA).
heart-hands iconIntervention Services
When an individual is in denial about their substance use disorder, their loved ones may organize a drug intervention in California. This effort involves gently but assertively confronting the individual about their substance use and sharing how it has affected those who care about them. A professional interventionist may also attend this gathering. Their expertise with intervention services can prove helpful in guiding the conversation to a positive result.
medically-assisted-detox iconMedically Assisted Detox
When addicted, quitting your drug of choice suddenly can be dangerous. That's why experts agree a medically assisted detox is the safest way to remove addictive substances from the body. Usually done in an inpatient setting, your vitals signs and overall well being are consistently monitored and rechecked in order to keep you safe and ensure the detox is successful.

Treatments

The goal of treatment for alcoholism is abstinence. Those with poor social support, poor motivation, or psychiatric disorders tend to relapse within a few years of treatment. For these people, success is measured by longer periods of abstinence, reduced use of alcohol, better health, and improved social functioning. Recovery and Maintenance are usually based on 12 step programs and AA meetings.

Drug rehab in California teaches participants constructive ways to stay clean and sober. Treatment revolves around helping individuals stop using the substance they are addicted to and learn healthy habits to avoid relapse.

A combined mental health and substance abuse rehab has the staff and resources available to handle individuals with both mental health and substance abuse issues. It can be challenging to determine where a specific symptom stems from (a mental health issue or an issue related to substance abuse), so mental health and substance abuse professionals are helpful in detangling symptoms and keeping treatment on track.

Opioid rehabs specialize in supporting those recovering from opioid addiction. They treat those suffering from addiction to illegal opioids like heroin, as well as prescription drugs like oxycodone. These centers typically combine both physical as well as mental and emotional support to help stop addiction. Physical support often includes medical detox and subsequent medical support (including medication), and mental support includes in-depth therapy to address the underlying causes of addiction.

Programs

adult-program thumbnail image
Adult Program
Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.
young-adult-program thumbnail image
Young Adult Program
Young adulthood can be an exciting, yet difficult, time of transition. Individuals in their late teens to mid-20s face unique stressors related to school, jobs, families, and social circles, which can lead to a rise in substance use. Rehab centers with dedicated young adult programs will include activities and amenities that cater to this age group, with an emphasis on specialized counseling, peer socialization, and ongoing aftercare.

Clinical Services

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a therapy modality that focuses on the relationship between one's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It is used to establish and allow for healthy responses to thoughts and feelings (instead of unhealthy responses, like using drugs or alcohol). CBT has been proven effective for recovering addicts of all kinds, and is used to strengthen a patient's own self-awareness and ability to self-regulate. CBT allows individuals to monitor their own emotional state, become more adept at communicating with others, and manage stress without needing to engage in substance abuse.

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

Motivational Interviewing (MI) is a clinical approach to helping people with substance abuse issues and other conditions shift behavior in positive ways. It is more goal-oriented than traditional psychotherapy, as MI counselors directly attempt to get clients to consider making behavioral change (rather than wait for them to come to conclusions themselves). Its primary purpose is to resolve ambivalence and help clients become able to make healthy choices freely.

Trauma therapy addresses traumatic incidents from a client's past that are likely affecting their present-day experience. Trauma is often one of the primary triggers and potential causes of addiction, and can stem from child sexual abuse, domestic violence, having a parent with a mental illness, losing one or both parents at a young age, teenage or adult sexual assault, or any number of other factors. The purpose of trauma therapy is to allow a patient to process trauma and move through and past it, with the help of trained and compassionate mental health professionals.

Whether a marriage or other committed relationship, an intimate partnership is one of the most important aspects of a person's life. Drug and alcohol addiction affects both members of a couple in deep and meaningful ways, as does rehab and recovery. Couples therapy and other couples-focused treatment programs are significant parts of exploring triggers of addiction, as well as learning how to build healthy patterns to support ongoing sobriety.

Research clearly demonstrates that recovery is far more successful and sustainable when loved ones like family members participate in rehab and substance abuse treatment. Genetic factors may be at play when it comes to drug and alcohol addiction, as well as mental health issues. Family dynamics often play a critical role in addiction triggers, and if properly educated, family members can be a strong source of support when it comes to rehabilitation.

Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT) is a way of getting nicotine into the bloodstream without smoking. It uses products that supply low doses of nicotine to help people stop smoking. The goal of therapy is to cut down on cravings for nicotine and ease the symptoms of nicotine withdrawal.

I went to Milestones Ranch (twice) to get off of Barbiturates. Denise and Savannah are both incredibly caring people and competent. They both go out of their way to help and even after 15 years they still are willing to keep in touch. I was detoxed witl in the actual rehab the first time and it went better than I thought it would sans the first few days. You get to use the phone at certain times and the houses are both very well stocked and nice. They offered equine therapy and music therapy which I personally didn't like but I guess it was nice they had it. They also drove us to AA or NA meetings almost every night. Privelages included shopping, coffee trips, beach trips, the usual high end Malibu rehab stuff. Staff were mostly excellent and caring with some exceptional stand outs whose names I wish I could remember. The first time I was there I must say that things within the client base were crazy, but it wasn't the rehabs fault. In their defense they drug tested us and also set up aftercare (sober living), I just fell in with a crazy person who knew every drug that wouldn't pop on a standard panel test. I relapsed but didn't get caught (my 3 friends did get caught after using a certain substance) and eventually ended up getting 5 years of sobriety. I do attribute that to Milestones Ranch. That is the longest true sobriety I've ever had. I was able to work and be a productive member of society. One thing they do (or used to do) was a free 10 day stay if you relapsed. I did end up relapsing and they actually took me in free of charge. I have to say, that's an uncommon thing in Malibu rehabs (I went to multiple) and I've never seen it before. The second time around I had to detox at a facility and than go to the actual rehab which was annoying but it was whatever. Second time around they had definitely learned from the first time I was there and there was no drama within the patients. Unfortunately my family did not support a longer stay than 10 days for my second time but I am very grateful that I had that 10 days and was treated like a regular client. If you have the money or insurance I would recommend Milestones over most stereotypical high end Malibu rehabs, I found it to be much more effective. The only downside is the price, but you get what you pay for.

Like the ads say “Don’t call Milestones” you’d be much better off at Rise or Passages. Just take a look and compare their websites and reviews, the choice should be apparent.

Denise and Savannah who help run milestones as LCSWs go above and beyond. They are both so kind hearted and caring, while also being evidence based and clinically trained. I would send a family member here, and highly recommend for any adult patient struggling. Very grateful to have them in the community.

It’s a generic, bait and switch Malibu rehab. You pay for 30 days, and then you will spend those 30 days being manipulated into having your family empty their life savings to pay for another 60 days.

Milestones is hands down the best thing I could have ever done for myself and my family. Thankfully I was referred here, otherwise my life path would undoubtedly have gone a different route. Denise and Savannah are always available, accessible, unbiased, not judgmental. Their ability to consistently stay balanced is truly incredible. I have continued my relationship with milestones, the staff, and incredible doctors for over 7 years. When I read reviews that are unfavorable, it feels that it comes from a place of Being vulnerable. It is uncomfortable, so it’s easy for people to fight against help and everything that is being offered to them. It is not easy by any means, but that is the difference in being open to an opportunity to save your life. Thank you Denise, Savannah, Joey, and everyone else that played a vital role in my recovery.

I went through Milestones in 2020, and have remained recovered ever since. That is an incredible achievement for a chronic relapser like myself, but not only that, many of the people I went through treatment with have remained recovered as well. The success of our outcomes was a direct result of the foundation that Milestone's provided for us. Milestones' location is beautiful and perfect for recovery. It is in Malibu, on a ranch tucked away in the hills. There are wide open spaces and plenty of walking trails. The property has many water features and wildlife aplenty. Milestones' approach to recovery is effective because it is truly holistic. Many places say they approach things holistically, but Milestones actually delivers. The healthy food, the physical activity, the individual therapy, the group therapy, the hypnotherapy, sober fun activities, etc. all combine to deliver exceptional results. For me, it wasn't just the groups, or the staff, or the therapy, or the hikes, or the outings, or the family work - it was all of it. All of the elements that Milestones combined to produce a successful outcome in me worked together to give me a chance at an amazing, recovered, life. I owe this place everything I have today, they welcomed me back in with open arms after I burnt my life to the ground again. My condition needed to be treated with love, patience, compassion, and firmness, and that is what Milestones provided. My family and I are forever grateful and indebted to this miraculous place.

The harm i experienced by the incompetent nepotistic management at milestones has taken far more time to recover from than i spent here. Despite the Malibu claim, there's nothing luxurious about the location ( think 70s college house for the men), stained pool, a mountain of deferred property maintenance including substantial fire hazards despite a recent wildfire (but they're sure to rinse the eucalyptus leaves off the pavement every morning). A chaotic spaghetti at the wall approach to treatment, complete with over prescribing dangerous mental meds. The worst part is the sheer incompetence of the management - completely unable to own their wrongs, and instead blaming the clients. Once a situation arised due to said incompetence, all subsequent therapist sessions were consumed by paperwork attempting to pin their incompetence on the client. I have never wasted money like this before or after in my life, despite the "scholarship." This place set back my recovery tremendously. If you are rich and want to scare your kid straight, consider. If you are serious about recovery, avoid like the plague.

Milestones saved my life. I have been to many facilities all around the country, and milestones is the reason I am alive today. The staff that Denise and Sav have put together is second to none. There is truly love and magic and miracles on the ranch.
