About The Canyon at Santa Monica

In partial hospitalization you participate in therapeutic sessions during the day and return home at night. It is more structured and involves more time commitment than intensive outpatient care. That makes it more appealing if you require more support and guidance in your recovery journey. Intensive outpatient care is more flexible and can accommodate your daily schedule better. Both programs are designed to provide you the support and therapy necessary for lasting recovery.

This is achieved through group and individual therapy sessions. Their evidence based approach involves various therapeutic practices like cognitive behavioral therapy, EMDR and motivational interviewing. These help you address the causes of your addiction and develop coping and relapse prevention strategies. Treatment also incorporates ‘whole person’ activities like meditation, yoga and nutrition counseling. This boosts mental awareness and wellbeing, which is great for your recovery.

They also offer medication assisted treatment. This recovery solution uses FDA approved medicine and counseling to treat addiction. Additionally, the program integrates various 12 Step programs. This guides you through a structured recovery process focusing on personal growth, accountability and peer support.

You’ll also benefit from their addiction education sessions and aftercare services. The latter may involve referral to support groups like AA or NA for ongoing support. You can also join their alumni network, which will make it easier for you to access community resources and receive ongoing care. Comments from past clients reflect an overwhelmingly positive experience and exceptional quality of care.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Highly Recommended I’ve been on my recovery journey since 2023, and I’m now approaching a year of sobriety. I can honestly say that The Canyon and its staff were instrumental in that success. Before coming here, I had attended many programs but never received the true treatment and support I needed. Antonio, the Executive Director, goes above and beyond for every client. When I called, he immediately sprang into action and secured my spot in treatment with unmatched drive and dedication. The therapeutic staff is exceptional—highly educated, knowledgeable, and deeply caring. Every group session provided real learning and takeaways that supported my growth. What makes The Canyon different is the genuine care and community they foster. The environment they create allows you to feel supported, encouraged, and capable of building real recovery. Though I began my sobriety journey in 2023, I didn’t start truly recovering until I walked through their doors in the summer of 2024. They saved my life, and I will be forever grateful

Antonio’s class is always a full house! He is able to make behavioral modification happen on the spot. We had four people relinquish their vapes, and one by one threw them away in the trashcan. He puts 110% into saving lives here, and he’s a local celebrity here for good reason, and it’s more than his motivational classes, it’s his on-point mentorship.

This place simply saved my life from alcohol addiction. From the very beginning, the team treated me with compassion, respect, and a level of care that I hadn’t experienced in a long time. Antonio T stood out as a constant source of wisdom, encouragement, and honesty — he didn’t just guide me through recovery; he helped me rediscover my worth. Eternal gratitude to The Canyon at Santa Monica

Accepted Insurance

The Canyon at Santa Monica works with several private insurance providers and also accepts private payments when possible, please contact to verify your specific insurance provider.

Other Forms of Payment

Private insurance refers to any kind of healthcare coverage that isn't from the state or federal government. This includes individual and family plans offered by an employer or purchased from the Insurance Marketplace. Every plan will have different requirements and out of pocket costs so be sure to get the full details before you start treatment.

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Military members, veterans, and eligible dependents have access to specific insurance programs that help them get the care they need. TRICARE and VA insurance can help you access low cost or no cost addiction and mental health treatment. Programs that accept military insurance often have targeted treatment focused on the unique challenges military members, veterans, and their families face.

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

outpatient iconOutpatient

Outpatient Programs (OP) are for those seeking mental rehab or drug rehab, but who also stay at home every night. The main difference between outpatient treatment (OP) and intensive outpatient treatment (IOP) lies in the amount of hours the patient spends at the facility. Most of the time an outpatient program is designed for someone who has completed an inpatient stay and is looking to continue their growth in recovery. Outpatient is not meant to be the starting point, it is commonly referred to as aftercare.

aftercare iconAftercare Support

Rehab aftercare programs offer clients in addiction recovery a robust continuum of care after clients have completed active treatment. These services address recovery as a life-long process and are designed to evolve with clients' changing needs. Clients may partner with their case managers and/or addiction recovery team to identify the rehab aftercare services that are right for them. They may receive career counseling, housing assistance, peer coaching, 12 step program induction, among many other services.

12-step icon12-Step

12-step programs are addiction recovery models based on Alcoholics Anonymous (AA). A number of substance abuse programs (including some drug and alcohol rehab centers) use the 12 steps as a basis for treatment. Beginning steps involve admitting powerlessness over the addiction and creating a spiritual basis for recovery. Middle steps including making direct amends to those who've been hurt by the addiction, and the final step is to assist others in addiction recovery in the same way. 12-Step offshoots including Narcotics Anonymous (NA), Cocaine Anonymous (CA), Dual Recovery Anonymous (DRA), Sex and Love Addicts Anonymous (SLAA) and Gamblers Anonymous (GA).

heart-hands iconIntervention Services

Intervention Services helps family or friends of addicts stage an intervention, which is a meeting in which loved ones share their concerns and attempt to get an addict into treatment. Professional intervention specialists can help loved ones organize, gather, and communicate with an addict. They can guide intervention participants in describing the damage the addict’s behavior is causing and that outside help is necessary to address the addiction. The ideal outcome of an intervention is for the addict to go to rehab and get the help they need. Their five step intervention method provides a proven protocol of education, action and healing in a respectful and non-confrontational manner. They work with their patients and their families to ensure that they find the right interventionist and that there is total understanding of the treatment process.

medically-assisted-detox iconMedically Assisted Detox

When addicted, quitting your drug of choice suddenly can be dangerous. That's why experts agree a medically assisted detox is the safest way to remove addictive substances from the body. Usually done in an inpatient setting, your vitals signs and overall well being are consistently monitored and rechecked in order to keep you safe and ensure the detox is successful.

intensive-outpatient iconIntensive Outpatient

Intensive outpatient programs (IOP) support a client's sustained sobriety as they exit detox or step down from an inpatient program. IOPs are also designed for clients who are at an elevated risk of relapse. Intensive outpatient treatment typically requires clients to engage in a minimum of nine hours of therapy per week, but clients may receive up to 20 therapeutic hours weekly. IOP treatment modalities often combine psychotherapy, recovery-focused life skills training, and medication assisted treatment (MAT).

partial-hospitalization iconPartial Hospitalization Program

Commonly known as "day treatment," a partial hospitalization program (PHP) is an intensive form of outpatient treatment where clients meet during the day and return home in the evening. PHP treatment doesn't require 24-hour care and often serves as an alternative to inpatient hospitalization or a step-down after a residential program. With PHP treatment, you can receive daily support for 6 to 8 hours which includes evidence-based therapies and medication management. The cost of PHP treatment typically varies but averages 90 days.

Treatments

The goal of treatment for alcoholism is abstinence. Those with poor social support, poor motivation, or psychiatric disorders tend to relapse within a few years of treatment. For these people, success is measured by longer periods of abstinence, reduced use of alcohol, better health, and improved social functioning. Recovery and Maintenance are usually based on 12 step programs and AA meetings.

Drug rehab in California teaches participants constructive ways to stay clean and sober. Treatment revolves around helping individuals stop using the substance they are addicted to and learn healthy habits to avoid relapse.

Many of those suffering from addiction also suffer from mental or emotional illnesses like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, or anxiety disorders. Rehab and other substance abuse facilities treating those with a dual diagnosis or co-occurring disorder administer psychiatric treatment to address the person's mental health issue in addition to drug and alcohol rehabilitation.

A combined mental health and substance abuse treatment center has the staff and resources available to handle individuals with both mental health and substance abuse issues. It can be challenging to determine where a specific symptom stems from (a mental health issue or an issue related to substance abuse), so mental health and substance abuse professionals are helpful in detangling symptoms and keeping treatment on track. When co-occurring addiction and mental health issues are treated concurrently, individuals are much more likely to achieve and maintain a healthy, balanced lifestyle. They offer integrated treatment using evidence-based methods for the best chance of long-term success in recovery.

Opioid rehabs specialize in supporting those recovering from opioid addiction. They treat those suffering from addiction to illegal opioids like heroin, as well as prescription drugs like oxycodone. These centers typically combine both physical as well as mental and emotional support to help stop addiction. Physical support often includes medical detox and subsequent medical support (including medication), and mental support includes in-depth therapy to address the underlying causes of addiction.

In California, substance abuse treatment programs can help individuals with any type of substance use disorders and co-occurring conditions. These rehab programs typically encompass various levels of care, including medically assisted detox, intensive outpatient, outpatient, residential rehab, and partial hospitalization. You can expect clinicians to utilize evidence-based therapies like cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT), and mindfulness to help you achieve and sustain your recovery. The rehab's clinical team can provide a comprehensive assessment to determine the appropriate level of care and medical support you may need.

Programs

adult-program thumbnail image

Adult Program

Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.
young-adult-program thumbnail image

Young Adult Program

Young adulthood can be an exciting, yet difficult, time of transition. Individuals in their late teens to mid-20s face unique stressors related to school, jobs, families, and social circles, which can lead to a rise in substance use. Rehab centers with dedicated young adult programs will include activities and amenities that cater to this age group, with an emphasis on specialized counseling, peer socialization, and ongoing aftercare.

Clinical Services

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a therapy modality that focuses on the relationship between one's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It is used to establish and allow for healthy responses to thoughts and feelings (instead of unhealthy responses, like using drugs or alcohol). CBT has been proven effective for recovering addicts of all kinds, and is used to strengthen a patient's own self-awareness and ability to self-regulate. CBT allows individuals to monitor their own emotional state, become more adept at communicating with others, and manage stress without needing to engage in substance abuse.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a modified form of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), a treatment designed to help people understand and ultimately affect the relationship between their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. DBT is often used for individuals who struggle with self-harm behaviors, such as self-mutilation (cutting) and suicidal thoughts, urges, or attempts. It has been proven clinically effective for those who struggle with out-of-control emotions and mental health illnesses like Borderline Personality Disorder.

During group therapy, men and women learn to express their emotions openly in a non judgmental setting. This helps you process your feelings and reduces feelings of social isolation that are often associated with addiction.

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

Trauma therapy addresses traumatic incidents from a client's past that are likely affecting their present-day experience. Trauma is often one of the primary triggers and potential causes of addiction, and can stem from child sexual abuse, domestic violence, having a parent with a mental illness, losing one or both parents at a young age, teenage or adult sexual assault, or any number of other factors. The purpose of trauma therapy is to allow a patient to process trauma and move through and past it, with the help of trained and compassionate mental health professionals.

Research clearly demonstrates that recovery is far more successful and sustainable when loved ones like family members participate in rehab and substance abuse treatment. Genetic factors may be at play when it comes to drug and alcohol addiction, as well as mental health issues. Family dynamics often play a critical role in addiction triggers, and if properly educated, family members can be a strong source of support when it comes to rehabilitation.

Life skills trainings involve all the skills a person must have in order to function successfully in the world. These include time management, career guidance, money management, and effective communication. Truly successful addiction recovery is based on the ability to not only live substance-free, but to thrive. Life skills teaches the practical necessities of functioning in society, which sets clients up for success in life, and therefore sobriety.

Nutrition therapy, aka medical nutrition therapy (MNT), is a way of treating physical, emotional, and medical conditions through diet. Specific dietary plans are designed by professional nutritionists or registered dietitians, and patients follow them in order to positively affect their physical and mental health.

Creativity is inherently healing, and can help those in recovery express thoughts or feelings they might not otherwise be able to. Creative arts therapy can include music, poetry/writing, painting, sculpting, dance, theater, sandplay, and more. Unlike traditional art, the final product matters far less than the experience of creation and expression itself.

Experiential therapy is a form of therapy in which clients are encouraged to surface and work through subconscious issues by engaging in real-time experiences. Experiential therapy departs from traditional talk therapy by involving the body, and having clients engage in activities, movements, and physical and emotional expression. This can involve role-play or using props (which can include other people). Experiential therapy can help people process trauma, memories, and emotion quickly, deeply, and in a lasting fashion, leading to substantial and impactful healing.

The goal of nicotine replacement therapy in California is to mitigate the symptoms of nicotine withdrawal. It cuts down on your cravings by supplying a small dose of nicotine without exposing your body to the toxins of cigarette smoke.

For clients who are struggling with ambivalence toward change, motivational interviewing in California can help strengthen their commitment to change. Using a conversational method, the therapist helps you explore your motivations and empowers you to make the changes you desire.

My experience at The Canyon was nothing short of life changing. Before I came my life had definitely become unmanageable. With the first call to Antonio and through the whole experience I felt that I was truly cared for. I learned so much. It was like being in a Masterclass of life! The staff is amazing and I would recommend The Canyon to anyone who is struggling with drugs/and or alcohol. They gave me my life back.

I can't endorse this place enough. If you or a friend or family member is weighing the decision to come here, stop right now, and do it. This will change your life if you allow it to. From incredible full time staff like Jesse and Antonio, to the diverse group of facilitators and amazing therapists like Caitlin, this is a world class treatment program, one that I imagine will be hard to find anywhere else. There are so many thank you's I owe to this place, for the first time in over 10+ years, I have months of sobriety under my belt, and I'm confident I have the toolkit, community, and knowledge to continue on a positive path forward, free from my DOC. Lean in, and watch your life transform

I had the immense privilege of attending the Canyon twice. I completely turned my back on sobriety and found myself in a place of hopelessness and despair. The Executive Director Antonio refused to give up on me and moved heaven and earth to make sure I would get the help I needed. Since the day I met him he as been in my corner and I have watched as he has worked tirelessly every single day to ensure each and every one of his clients are taken care of. He is constantly reinventing the program making sure the best clinicians are on staff. Their level of knowledge and professionalism blended with kindness, patience, and unconditional love is special to be a witness to and a recipient of. They blend CBT, ACT, Mindfulness, Eastern Philosophy, Scientific Study, SMART Recovery, Refuge/Dharma, AA and all other 12 Step recovery programs into an actionable toolkit that equips their clients to find a path that works for them and to completely rebuild themselves into a brand new life. I cannot express my gratitude enough to this program. It truly works if you're willing to try.

My experience at The Canyons was life changing. Antonio and his team of therapists, support groups and staff are all wonderful to work with and truly care about your recovery and well being. I have had other experiences in recovery and have never come out with a more solid foundation and hope for the future than I have since leaving the canyon. They have all the necessary resources and even offer post recovery Alumni services that I plan to unitize moving forward. If you have problems with addiction or questions about your sobriety and substance use, the Canyons is a place that I highly recommend for a better chance at a brighter future and one that doesn’t depend upon substance abuse. A big thank you to the entire team at The Canyons…you have changed my life and myself, my kids and family are appreciative of all that you have done for me!

The Canyon was the turning point in my sobriety journey. As a gay man, it was crucial for me to find treatment that focused on addressing addiction itself rather than its symptoms, such as sex or objectification. The inclusive and affirming environment at The Canyon provided exactly that. I am deeply grateful for the unwavering dedication of Antonio, Franchesca, and the entire staff, who helped guide me from a place of hopelessness to healing. Completing the program has transformed my perspective—I now see the world through a lens of abundance and am committed to helping others in their recovery journey. A special shoutout to Michaelis and Kelani for their incredible support throughout this process. Thank you, The Canyon, for giving me the tools to reclaim my life.

I can’t say enough good things about the Canyon. It completely changed my life, from the day I enrolled I could tell how serious Antonio was about changing my life for the better. I am so grateful to have found a place like this that helped support me and teach me the lessons I needed not just in sobriety but in my entire life. The entire staff here is great, and extremely committed to helping you by any means possible. When I first enrolled here I was a bit lost and having the hardest time of my life. Antonio, Francesca, and Jessie were amazing in showing me the attention, love and support I needed while also being great influences and people I could bounce any idea off of. The other clients at The Canyon were amazing as well, everyday I would go in it felt like I was surrounded by best friends and family. The community of people here are second to none. Antonio was there everyday eagerly doing the most to ensure we all were getting what we needed, no matter what it was. He was even there Christmas and New Year’s Day. I seriously can’t say enough positive things about my experience here, and I know if I ever face a tough time in life again I will have a place to go. Thank you for getting my life back to where I need it to be !
