I want this to be read as a 5-star review with a challenge for improvement. Tamarack Health is vital for Ashland—especially with Northland College now closed, this facility is one of the last anchors for growth in our region.
My Experience
I spent 48 hours here, saw three doctors, and walked away with three slightly different explanations of my condition. That inconsistency is concerning.
At one point, I was told I could eat, but my own research suggested otherwise. When I insisted I shouldn’t, a doctor eventually had to look it up online. The next person who used the computer revealed the Johns Hopkins page she had left open. For anyone healing a perforated colon—yes, you do not eat, not even drink water. That moment taught me: always do your own research.
I was also discharged without seeing a doctor. The last physician I spoke to said she wanted to consult the surgery team. Three hours later, a nurse simply told me, “If you can keep broth down, you’re good.” That was it—no chance to talk to a doctor about my new, life-changing condition.
What Worked
The nursing staff were all kind, attentive, and professional. The facility itself is clean, spacious, and comfortable. The people here clearly care.
What’s Missing
What’s missing is the sense of a team. Healthcare works best when patients feel their caregivers are communicating—not just walking in one at a time to read a chart. What if every shift started with a “huddle” where the team aligned on patient care, like athletes before a game? What if patients felt that same spirit of unity when someone walked into the room?
Even a simple improvement—a live group chat among care providers, a more fluid hand-off, or visible collaboration—could shift the entire experience. Patients don’t just need comfort; they need confidence that their caregivers are speaking with one voice.
My Hope
Tamarack Health can rise higher and be a leader in Ashland’s future. All it would take is breaking down the bureaucracy and building up the teamwork. I believe this facility, with its people and potential, could become a shining example of healthcare done right—not just for Ashland, but for rural communities everywhere.

Starting off with this review that all meals prepared at AMC are hand prepared and cooked by the Chef and his team of Cooks, All foods are homemade and not one meal is repeated making this hospitals food gourmet and lovable, Monday-Friday 11am-6pm The Hospital Chef is tirelessly preparing good food for families and visitors and patients of AMC On the weekends Patients get to have what they want by contacting the kitchen staff and ordering what is good, The menu is widespread with healthy lunches dinners and desserts. Whatever catches your eye, its sure to be good. This Volunteer has had several meals at AMC and am impressed with the inevitable meals prepared. I would continue to dine whilst volunteering at AMC no matter what. Each meal is Appropriately priced so are the Refreshments. Theres even fruit, sandwiches and wraps available in case you don’t want the main course. Even tho the kitchen dining room is closed after lunch you can still order what you want (patient).

If you want urgent care don't come here. I went and asked expressly for urgent care because I only had a uti and now they are trying to make me pay for emergency. This hospital scams.

please rewrite this review: I can't believe I haven't written a review yet! Well, here it is...I have my life back because this place exists. Kathy Javis, the owner of this amazing place, found me at a time in life when I was on the verge of giving up. A time when I was lost and didn't know where to turn. I was hopeless, ashamed, terrified....defeated. Kathy listen to me. She heard me. Care cared about me. She stood by my side as I was mauled over by life. When I felt like giving up she was there to remind me how far I had come and she kept my mind focused on the rewards. Kathy was able to see the person I was inside and she looked passed the person who was addicted. I was with Kathy for nearly 4 years of my life. She helped me through the pain of what I now know was abuse. She helped me find my confidence back, she helped me find reasons to smile. She taught me to stand up for myself and helped me with setting boundaries, she taught me that I didn't have to live in fear. Because of Kathy, today I am happier than I ever knew was possible. There are no words to empress my gratitude to her. She saved my life and she saved my daughters' lives. She gave me the gift of a lifetime. This kind of gift is rare. Range Treatment Center is definitely the place to go to on the Iron Range for inpatient treatment! I am even extremely impressed with how well they immediately accommodated my food allergies! Being able to eat properly definitely makes a difference in how much someone recovers after addiction! The staff here is amazing & the facility being nonprofit makes it obvious to how they do everything that they can to help each & every person who comes in! Being a smaller facility it's easier for them to be more focused on each person's plan for successful rehabilitation! i was there on commitment for 3 months in summer 2023 and it was great! (well, as good as it could’ve been given my circumstances). i made a lot of friends and there was a given a lot of freedom. we got free time and were allowed to leave the house. most rooms were only 1 bed, but if you were placed in a 2 bed room you could make a request to switch. we went to the lake all the time. we went to places around the city. groups weren’t that long and food was served to us every meal. there was a bedtime, but you could still be on your phone in bed. if you were in your room for a long time, they did checks every hour. they did this throughout the night as well, meaning staff was there 24/7. i would’ve rated this 5 stars, but it’s only 4 because i swear to god that house was haunted. but overall great place!!

Fresh Start is the best treatment center I've ever experienced. I love everything about it. The counselors are awesome. Had a great time there and met lots of new friends. I love the location also lots of parks and everything you need all downtown duluth. The food is awesome.

The Pride Institute is a place of miracles. The healing and recovery that takes place here is life-changing. I cannot speak highly enough, of the dedication of the staff. From counselors to therapists, from the tech staff to the cooks who prepare our daily meal, they are all 100% dedicated to the clients. In addition, the sense of community that is fostered here allow each individual to shine. You find yourself among peers who often have the same struggles that you have had.
You truly find yourself supported, and definitely not alone. If you are serious about getting sober, and have the opportunity to get to the Pride Institute, you should definitely consider this one of your best options.

This was my second time receiving treatment at Hazelden, and I truly felt a deeper sense of connection and growth this time (quality of service improved since last time ) This time, working with my counselor “nas” made a big difference in my experience. He showed great understanding, professionalism, and sensitivity while addressing my addiction challenges. His approach was thoughtful and respectful, and I always felt safe and heard during our sessions. Really loved the mental health part and mental health professionals!! I’ve learned so much about myself, and I’m proud to say I’m now two months sober.

I recently completed my time at Hazelden Betty Ford, and I can honestly say it was a life-changing experience. From the moment I arrived, I felt supported and welcomed into a community that truly understands the journey to recovery. I enjoyed every minute of my stay and met so many lifelong friends who continue to be an important part of my life.
During my time there, I learned that I can have fun while being sober, which was a huge revelation for me. The program gave me valuable life skills that I will carry with me forever, and the staff helped me get my medications sorted out, which made a world of difference in my day-to-day well-being.
I especially appreciated the day treatment program, which kept me engaged, motivated, and focused on my recovery. Now that I’m in IOP (Intensive Outpatient Program), I’m still enjoying the supportive structure and continuing to grow every day.
