As soon as you start drinking alcohol, it affects your body. The brain, central nervous system, gastrointestinal tract and cardiovascular system are most severely affected and vary depending on how much and how fast you drink.
Alcohol begins affecting the brain and body within minutes of consumption.1 After drinking, alcohol is absorbed through the stomach and small intestine into the bloodstream, where it travels to the brain and other organs.
The liver then begins metabolizing alcohol at a relatively fixed rate of about one standard drink per hour. As alcohol breaks down, it produces acetaldehyde, a toxic compound that contributes to many of alcohol’s immediate side effects.2
Common short-term effects of drinking alcohol include:
- Slowed reaction time and poor coordination
- Impaired judgment and decision-making
- Slurred speech

- Flushed skin and dizziness

Alcohol-related liver disease progresses from fatty liver to alcoholic hepatitis, fibrosis, cirrhosis and eventually, liver cancer. Early-stage fatty liver disease can often be reversed with abstinence, but cirrhosis results in permanent scarring and loss of liver function.4

Alcohol disrupts cardiovascular regulation by increasing blood pressure, altering heart rhythm and weakening the heart muscle over time. Even if you don’t meet the criteria for severe alcohol use disorder, many effective options can help you regain control.
Some signs that you may need help include:
- Morning shakes
- Blackouts
- Gastrointestinal symptoms
- Unexplained bruising
- Weight loss
- Persistent fatigue
- Elevated blood pressure levels
Alcohol use disorder can be mild, moderate or severe. Symptoms may include drinking more than you intended, spending a lot of time drinking or recovering from the effects of drinking, continuing to drink despite it causing problems in your life and more.
You don’t need to qualify for a diagnosis of alcohol use disorder to get help with your drinking. There are treatment options for problem drinking at any level, including medical detox and medication-assisted treatment that utilizes FDA-approved medications like naltrexone, acamprosate and disulfiram, therapy (such as cognitive behavioral therapy and motivational interviewing) and peer support groups.9
An important note: If you think you may be physically dependent on alcohol, you should not try to stop drinking on your own. Stopping alcohol use abruptly can be dangerous due to withdrawal risks, including seizures and delirium tremens.10

In many cases, yes. Some effects of alcohol begin improving within days or weeks of reducing or stopping alcohol use. Sleep quality, hydration status, blood pressure, immune function and fatty liver disease often improve significantly with sustained abstinence.
