About OBOT Buprenorphine Induction Clinic

The University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) Division of Substance Use and Addiction Medicine (DSAAM) offers several substance use disorder (SUD)treatment programs in Northern California, including the office based opiate treatment program (OBOT) in San Francisco.

This is a methadone treatment program for individuals dealing with opioid addiction. The program focuses on harm reduction, overdose prevention and treatment and serves adults 18 and over.

The facility is conveniently located less than three miles from the downtown area. Clients may pay for treatment using health insurance, including Medi-Cal and other public insurance plans. They also offer an income based sliding scale payment plan for eligible individuals.

Welcoming and Private Treatment Environment

The facility is accessible and integrated with UCSF behavioral health support services. The treatment environment is safe, comfortable and designed for privacy. The multidisciplinary team focuses on patient centered, collaborative care.

Reducing Barriers to Addiction Treatment

The team emphasizes reducing treatment barriers by providing flexible scheduling. They provide services to those with co-occurring mental health and substance use disorders and treat individuals in marginalized populations, including the homeless.

Clients offer mixed reviews, but many are enthusiastic about the program. One client said, “This clinic has saved my life.” Another said the clinic was “amazing, with the most caring staff.”

Accepted Insurance

Please contact to verify your specific insurance provider.

OBOT Buprenorphine Induction Clinic works with several private insurance providers, please contact to verify your specific insurance provider.

Other Forms of Payment

Medicaid is a state based program that helps lower-income individuals and families pay for healthcare. Medicaid covers addiction treatment so those enrolled can use their coverage to pay for rehab. When a program accepts Medicaid the client often pays very little or nothing out of their own pocket.

Medicare is a federal program that provides health insurance for those 65 and older. It also serves people under 65 with chronic and disabling health challenges. To use Medicare for addiction treatment you need to find a program that accepts Medicare and is in network with your plan. Out of pocket costs and preauthorization requirements vary, so always check with your provider.

Military members, veterans, and eligible dependents have access to specific insurance programs that help them get the care they need. TRICARE and VA insurance can help you access low cost or no cost addiction and mental health treatment. Programs that accept military insurance often have targeted treatment focused on the unique challenges military members, veterans, and their families face.

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

Outpatient Programs (OP) are for those seeking mental rehab or drug rehab, but who also stay at home every night. The main difference between outpatient treatment (OP) and intensive outpatient treatment (IOP) lies in the amount of hours the patient spends at the facility. Most of the time an outpatient program is designed for someone who has completed an inpatient stay and is looking to continue their growth in recovery. Outpatient is not meant to be the starting point, it is commonly referred to as aftercare.

Completing a drug or alcohol rehab program shouldn't spell the end of substance abuse treatment. Aftercare involves making a sustainable plan for recovery, including ongoing support. This can include sober living arrangements like halfway houses, career counseling, and setting a patient up with community programs like Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) or Narcotics Anonymous (NA).

Drug and alcohol addiction often takes a heavy toll on one’s body. Over time, a physical dependence can develop, meaning the body physiologically needs the substance to function. Detox is the process of removing drugs and/or alcohol from the body, a process that can be lethal if mismanaged. Medical detox is done by licensed medical professionals who monitor vital signs and keep you safe, healthy, and as comfortable as possible as you go through detox and withdrawal.

I've been coming here for 6 months or so. And these people, may not be perfect, but you take the good with bad, and under that measurement they are amazing. They bent some policies for me to make sure I got my medicine when I needed, and you can really talk to pych staff. 5 *
