About Dakota Pride Center
The Dakota Pride Center is based in Sisseton in South Dakota. This site provides a continuum of care for those with co-occurring mental health and substance use disorders. They receive funding from the Indian Health Service so that there’s no charge for eligible individuals. They also accept state financed health plans other than Medicaid and offer a sliding fee scale to those who qualify.
Traditional Teachings Blended with 12 Step Concepts
I like that they incorporate traditional American Indian teachings with 12 Step concepts, including Red Road, Medicine Wheel, and Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) principles. Their inpatient program is located in a facility with 12 beds and 24/7 care. They also provide general outpatient, intensive outpatient (IOP), and partial hospitalization programs (PHP). Transitional housing is available to support those transitioning from intensive treatment into everyday life. Inipi ceremonies like a sweat lodge and opportunities to attend church services address the spiritual aspects of recovery.
Treating a Range of Patient Groups
Patients from a wide range of population groups are treated, with services designed for adults, young adults, and adolescents. They offer a specialized Prenatal Empowerment Program for pregnant women, as well as dedicated programs for veterans and military families. I appreciate that members of the LGBTQ+ community are made to feel welcome. Survivors of sexual abuse and domestic violence have a place in their programs as well.
Outdoor Relaxation and Recreation in Sisseton
The area around Sisseton provides a variety of outdoor spaces to supplement your treatment journey. The Cottonwood Slough-Dry Run is a finger outlet of the world’s largest Pleistocene glacial lake, featuring an undisturbed wetland complex with streams, shallow open water, lakes and marshes. Sica Hollow State Park immerses you in nature with its lakes, grasslands and prairies, and ravines filled with deciduous forests. The Blue Dog State Fish Hatchery is the largest of its kind in the state, offering a visitor center and aquarium and two hiking trails for peaceful recreation.

Treatments
Substance rehabs focus on helping individuals recover from substance abuse, including alcohol and drug addiction (both illegal and prescription drugs). They often include the opportunity to engage in both individual as well as group therapy.
Clinical Services
Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.
In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.
