About Heartland Center for Behavioral Change – KC Outpatient

Heartland Center for Behavioral Change – KC Outpatient is a nonprofit substance use disorder treatment program located at 1534 Campbell in Kansas City, Missouri. Founded in 1982, the center uses the American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM) framework to guide care and holds CARF accreditation. Missouri recorded a 26% drop in overdose deaths in 2024, the steepest decline in state history, and programs like Heartland’s outpatient model are part of that work. Individuals seeking addiction treatment in Kansas City will find a range of low-cost and no-cost options here, supported by Missouri Medicaid, City of Kansas City funding, and a sliding fee schedule.

Outpatient and Intensive Outpatient Programs

The center’s flagship offering is the Comprehensive Substance Treatment and Rehabilitation (CSTAR) program, an outpatient treatment model that includes comprehensive assessment, educational services, intensive outpatient programming, and housing assistance. Treatment frequency varies by individual need, with some participants meeting daily and others on a less intensive schedule. Individual and group counseling, peer support services, and dialectic education groups are available throughout the program.

Heartland Center also provides medically assisted detoxification on an inpatient basis for individuals managing acute withdrawal symptoms from alcohol and other drugs, with length of stay based on clinical need. For people involved in the justice system, the program incorporates moral reconation therapy (MRT) to support behavioral change, goal-setting, and impulse control. Trauma therapy is available for those with co-occurring trauma histories, and medication support continues for those who need it during the recovery process.

Treating Alcohol, Opioids, and Other Substance Use

Heartland Center serves adults and young adults with a range of substance use disorders, including alcoholism and opioid addiction. Family participation is encouraged throughout treatment, recognizing that substance use affects households as well as individuals. The center accepts Medicare, Medicaid, and state and municipal funding, and no one is turned away for inability to pay.

Getting Started

Intake begins with a licensed mental health professional and a qualified substance use disorder specialist who complete a comprehensive assessment. From there, the clinical team works with the individual to build a treatment plan matched to their specific needs and goals. Contact Heartland Center for Behavioral Change in Kansas City, Missouri to schedule an initial assessment.

Heartland saved my life. I entered the program thinking I would just get help with my alcoholism but I ended up getting so much more than that. They helped me get sober and work through years of trauma. The staff at Heartland did more for me than the 3 years of therapy I had prior to entering the program. Miss Audra, Miss Jessica and Miss Binky gave me my life back. I wouldn’t be the person I am today without them.

There's a lot of bad reviews on here, some talking about waiting some talking about staff some just upset because they don't get what they want when they wanted it. First off shout out to Ms G, Mr Clapp, Suzie, Zarriah, Ashton, (Red braids) lol, all the nurses, Ms. Kimberly aka Kimbo slice (she doesn't play lol) and Ms. Bree. There's a few staff there that obviously try to run it their own way but the people that leave the negative comments are the people that honestly don't know if they want change or not. These people are EXTREMELY compassionate, caring, understanding. Yea the bed might not be the most comfortable but hey at least you got one right? You're treated with respect, dignity, and they don't know you from Adam but everyone in there absolutely cares about you. So what if you have to wait 6 hours to be checked in.... you waited 20-30-40ect years to finally get help right? This place even though today I'm a week sober I'm going back to Texas to a year long program and they gave me my first stepping stone. Only thing I can tell the staff is, the frequent flyers in there need to chill. 5 day program. Just because they don't have a place to go when there's numerous resources and y'all work y'all butts off trying to get them in there but they don't want to go, if they don't want to commit to a 90 day program or have a plan to seek actual help afterwords tell them they can't come back for 90 days. You're not helping them out by giving them food and a place to stay for 5 days just to come back 24hrs later and ask to come back in when there's people ( like myself) that WANTED change and they take up what could potentially be the next person's like me bed. They come through there after 2 times if they come a third, 90 days next door, you don't want to then 90 days till you can get a bed, you don't complete 90 days next door you are red flagged from coming in. Just some advice Thank y'all for everything. Thank y'all for giving me a stepping stone. Love y'all. God Bless

Other Forms of Payment

Medicare is a federal program that provides health insurance for those 65 and older. It also serves people under 65 with chronic and disabling health challenges. To use Medicare for addiction treatment you need to find a program that accepts Medicare and is in network with your plan. Out of pocket costs and preauthorization requirements vary, so always check with your provider.

Medicaid is a state based program that helps lower-income individuals and families pay for healthcare. Medicaid covers addiction treatment so those enrolled can use their coverage to pay for rehab. When a program accepts Medicaid the client often pays very little or nothing out of their own pocket.

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

Drug and alcohol addiction often takes a heavy toll on one's body. Over time, a physical dependence can develop, meaning the body physiologically needs the substance to function. Heartland Center for Behavioral Health also offers Medically Monitored Inpatient Detoxification in an inpatient basis for individuals dealing with withdrawals acute symptoms from alcohol and other drugs. Length of stay varies depending on the individual's needs but it usually lasts 5 days.

At certain points in the recovery process, it's important to have support available 24/7. 24-hour clinical care offers a safe environment in which to recover from drug or alcohol addiction in peace, knowing medical detox and other treatment will happen with professionals on hand.

Outpatient Programs (OP) are for those seeking mental rehab or drug rehab, but who also stay at home every night. The main difference between outpatient treatment (OP) and intensive outpatient treatment (IOP) lies in the amount of hours the patient spends at the facility. Most of the time an outpatient program is designed for someone who has completed an inpatient stay and is looking to continue their growth in recovery. Outpatient is not meant to be the starting point, it is commonly referred to as aftercare.

12-step programs are addiction recovery models based on Alcoholics Anonymous (AA). A number of substance abuse programs (including some drug and alcohol rehab centers) use the 12 steps as a basis for treatment. Beginning steps involve admitting powerlessness over the addiction and creating a spiritual basis for recovery. Middle steps including making direct amends to those who've been hurt by the addiction, and the final step is to assist others in addiction recovery in the same way. 12-Step offshoots including Narcotics Anonymous (NA), Cocaine Anonymous (CA), Dual Recovery Anonymous (DRA), Sex and Love Addicts Anonymous (SLAA) and Gamblers Anonymous (GA).

Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP) are for those who want or need a very structured treatment program but who also wish to live at home and continue with certain responsibilities (such as work or school). IOP substance abuse treatment programs vary in duration and intensity, and certain outpatient rehab centers will offer individualized treatment programs.

Residential treatment programs are those that offer housing and meals in addition to substance abuse treatment. Rehab facilities that offer residential treatment allow patients to focus solely on recovery, in an environment totally separate from their lives. Some rehab centers specialize in short-term residential treatment (a few days to a week or two), while others solely provide treatment on a long-term basis (several weeks to months). Some offer both, and tailor treatment to the patient's individual requirements.

Treatments

The goal of treatment for alcoholism is abstinence. Those with poor social support, poor motivation, or psychiatric disorders tend to relapse within a few years of treatment. For these people, success is measured by longer periods of abstinence, reduced use of alcohol, better health, and improved social functioning. Recovery and Maintenance are usually based on 12 step programs and AA meetings.

Drug rehab in Missouri usually involves several phases: detox, rehab, and aftercare. The rehab phase may include a combination of inpatient and outpatient treatments, as the individual moves through a continuum of care on their recovery journey.

Opioid rehabs specialize in supporting those recovering from opioid addiction. They treat those suffering from addiction to illegal opioids like heroin, as well as prescription drugs like oxycodone. These centers typically combine both physical as well as mental and emotional support to help stop addiction. Physical support often includes medical detox and subsequent medical support (including medication), and mental support includes in-depth therapy to address the underlying causes of addiction.

Substance rehabs focus on helping individuals recover from substance abuse, including alcohol and drug addiction (both illegal and prescription drugs). They often include the opportunity to engage in both individual as well as group therapy.

Programs

Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.

Young adulthood can be an exciting, yet difficult, time of transition. Individuals in their late teens to mid-20s face unique stressors related to school, jobs, families, and social circles, which can lead to a rise in substance use. Rehab centers with dedicated young adult programs will include activities and amenities that cater to this age group, with an emphasis on specialized counseling, peer socialization, and ongoing aftercare.

It's a great place to start your recovery, and maybe it isn't the right place to stay once you start, but for the beginning it's good.
