About Union Gospel Mission of Salem

Union Gospel Mission of Salem is located on Commercial Street NE in the urban setting of Salem, Oregon. Located inside the Union Gospel Mission church, they provide faith-based, comfortable and supportive care for those struggling with homelessness and displacement along with mental health and substance use issues.

They also offer healthy meals, comfortable beds, supportive informal meeting spaces and treatment areas in a new 50,000 square-foot facility located near the church. This site is their HQ as well as their men’s mission.

At Union Gospel, All are Welcome

Union Gospel considers everyone who walks through their door to be a neighbor in need. Their goal, through supportive care programs, is to help each client become independent, well-minded members of their community, by providing them with access and referrals to community resources.

They also provide them with a comfortable residential setting complete with normal home-like routines and responsibilities, to better prepare them to continue their journey of healing and recovery upon their discharge. This can consist of interview coaching for when they look for work.

Separate Missions Provide Gender-Specific Care

They offer two separate facilities for men and women, in order to provide the relatable peer support often preferred when struggling with gender-specific challenges, such as parenting and pregnancy. Their men’s facility is known as “Chuck’s Place” and is one of their three facilities referred to as “transition re-entry.”

Each Mission Provides Comforting Residential Services

Simonka Place in Keizer is a re-entry facility dedicated to women. It provides a safe, secure and structured environment for women to heal with typical home amenities including three meals each day, areas for showers, cozy beds for resting, and health care access.

Each facility offers healthy meals three times a day, with the purpose of assisting in healing both your mind and body through nourishment. They also offer optional chapel services to you in both morning and evening hours, but it’s not required that you attend.

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

inpatient iconInpatient

Residential treatment programs are those that offer housing and meals in addition to substance abuse treatment. Rehab facilities that offer residential treatment allow patients to focus solely on recovery, in an environment totally separate from their lives. Some rehab centers specialize in short-term residential treatment (a few days to a week or two), while others solely provide treatment on a long-term basis (several weeks to months). Some offer both, and tailor treatment to the patient's individual requirements.

Treatments

Substance rehabs focus on helping individuals recover from substance abuse, including alcohol and drug addiction (both illegal and prescription drugs). They often include the opportunity to engage in both individual as well as group therapy.

Clinical Services

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

Amazing staff and facilities. Their willingness to serve Salem’s homeless population with compassion and grace is a reflection of their relationship with Jesus.

You will get screamed at and talked down to by a majority of the staff, who have little compassion for, or understanding of, people who disagree with them or are otherwise having a difficult time. People with psychological issues are allowed to come onto the property and harass residents and staff will do nothing. For a facility run by a religious organization, UGM and it's staff exhibit a major un-christlike attitude. If you have low tolerance for B.S., avoid this place at all costs.

There are some good staff then there are others who don't care and will kick people out with out finding a solution for them and sometimes scream at them. They will also call the cops for Anything to kick people out who are just seeking help. Plus NEVER leave your belongings here, most likely it will get stolen. Seems like the have no security for other people's stuff. Human shit will occasionally be found around the property too.
