What the Winners Have in Common

On paper, all of the top 10 winners list Joint Commission or CARF accreditation, outpatient treatment and private insurance. The differences are in the level of care and how you pay. Half of the centers list medical detox, and most list residential care and dual diagnosis treatment. If you need medical detox or residential care you have fewer choices. Your payment options are another variable.  Four of the 10 top ten centers list Medicaid, a few list Medicare and more than half list military insurance. This means you should call to confirm the program specifics and verify your insurance coverage. The winners are based in Austin, Cedar Park, Smithville and Georgetown, so some are outside the city if a little distance helps.

How These Rankings Work

Our Rehab Score combines several factors and is the foundation of our treatment rankings on Rehab.com. Patient reviews make up about half of the score, and recent reviews count more than older ones. The remainder of the score uses accreditation and licensing, how complete and specific a center’s program information is, and reputation signals such as business history and staffing.

To qualify for this list, a center must list substance use treatment and at least one clinical level of care, show a physical address, and be open to the general public. We rank only one location per organization. Before publication, our editors screen every ranked center and its parent company and affiliates for actions against the state license, patient safety lawsuits and settlements, government fraud cases and credible investigations.

We remove centers that no longer qualify based on these criteria. We include centers that offer programs for young people only when they treat substance use. No center can pay for placement in our directory or on this list. The rankings are updated every quarter, and our scoring methodology page explains each criteria in detail.

Austin Rehab FAQs

How were these Austin rehabs chosen?

Rehab.com ranked 86 eligible treatment centers in the Austin metro area by Rehab Score, one location per organization. Eligible centers must list substance use treatment at a clinical level of care, have a street address and are open to the public. We screen these centers, the parent company and its affiliates before publication. Centers with a recent or pending patient-safety case, a government fraud case or a license action are left out. Rankings are updated every quarter.

Do these Austin rehabs accept Medicaid or insurance?

Each of the 10 centers lists private insurance, and 4 of the 10 list Medicaid. A few list Medicare, and more than half list military insurance. What a listing reports and what your plan will pay may not be the same. Ask the program to check your coverage before you are admitted to reduce the potential you’ll receive an unexpected bill.

What levels of care do these rehabs offer?

All 10 list outpatient care, and most go further. Most list intensive outpatient care and partial hospitalization, and most list residential care. When detox is the first step you need in your recovery journey, half of the top 10 centers offer the service. You initial treatment level is a clinical question. Ask the program’s intake team about the process and where you should start your treatment.
