About Washtenaw County – Community Mental Health

Washtenaw County Community Mental Health provides outpatient mental health and substance use disorder treatment services to residents of Washtenaw County in Michigan. You can contact the facility 24/7 every day of the year. They offer crisis mental health services as well as regular mental health care and addiction treatment. They accept private insurance but payment is based on what you can afford. If your deductible or co-pay exceeds your ability to pay then they’ll work with you to reduce your costs. Fees are determined on a sliding scale, so you’ll need to provide income documentation.

For adults with mental health and substance use disorder, there are many programs available including medication management, and individual and group therapy. They also offer peer support services.

Unlike many treatment services, the county offers assertive community treatment. This is when staff comes to your home and you receive treatment tailored to your needs. Some people need several checks a day while others need around the clock crisis support. Some people only need a weekly check in for health and medication management.

They also have a crisis residential treatment program available. This is a short term overnight treatment where you stay for up to two weeks. The program uses medication management, psychiatric services, and therapeutic support. The goal is to reduce or prevent trips to a psychiatric hospital.

A unique pilot program offered through this organization is the Law Enforcement assisted Diversion and Deflection program (LEADD). LEADD uses person centered and trauma informed care to treat a client’s issues instead of feeding him or her into the criminal justice system. The program works to address root problems of substance use and criminal activity such as mental illness, poverty, and homelessness. Because this is a pilot program, it’s only available in Ypsilanti Township.

For mental health and substance use treatment, you’ll have a case manager who coordinates your care and directs you to relevant resources. These may include care for trauma, substance use, or mental health. They also help with medical and social issues as well as employment.

Not very professional these days. Case workers are supposed to be in touch once a month and don't. The nurse practitioner won't call when it comes to virtual calls and will say you missed a call. They don't follow up with you for crap. It's a shame because they used to be more professional.

This place is a joke. DO NOT come here for services. My wife was paired with a social worker that mishandled her assessment the first time, so we both decided to not get services here but after filing a complaint they assured her that she wouldn't have to deal with the worker again. I didn't think a place like this could be capable of being so unprofessional,so I told her to give herself some time to think it through and reach back out after some time and she did. Just to be paired with the same worker she had an issue with. My wife called to notify a supervisor about the issue and the supervisor asked what was it my wife wanted her to do. Ensure this unprofessional company don't mess up and pair a worker with someone who felt uncomfortable with them in the past? This is absolutely no way to treat people coming in for mental health services, they're already going through a tough time and then the place that should be providing help, makes it all more difficult for the person reaching out for help. I'm not sure what this world is coming to, I'd give 0 zero stars if I could.

Do NOT go here. Save yourself the trouble for real. They're case managers show up at ur house uninvited and will knock on ur door until ur so uncomfortable u have to open the door. Then when u try to complain about ur unwelcomed visitor ur the bad guy and they're taking u off all they're services. All I said was I didn't want a case worker and that's when I never heard the end of it. Seriously if u have mental things u need help fixing don't go here go somewhere else. Cuz this place will not help u

Accepted Insurance

Washtenaw County – Community Mental Health works with several private insurance providers and also accepts private payments when possible, please contact to verify your specific insurance provider.

Other Forms of Payment

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Medicaid is a state based program that helps lower-income individuals and families pay for healthcare. Medicaid covers addiction treatment so those enrolled can use their coverage to pay for rehab. When a program accepts Medicaid the client often pays very little or nothing out of their own pocket.

Medicare is a federal program that provides health insurance for those 65 and older. It also serves people under 65 with chronic and disabling health challenges. To use Medicare for addiction treatment you need to find a program that accepts Medicare and is in network with your plan. Out of pocket costs and preauthorization requirements vary, so always check with your provider.

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

outpatient iconOutpatient
Outpatient Programs (OP) are for those seeking mental rehab or drug rehab, but who also stay at home every night. The main difference between outpatient treatment (OP) and intensive outpatient treatment (IOP) lies in the amount of hours the patient spends at the facility. Most of the time an outpatient program is designed for someone who has completed an inpatient stay and is looking to continue their growth in recovery. Outpatient is not meant to be the starting point, it is commonly referred to as aftercare.
aftercare iconAftercare Support
Completing a drug or alcohol rehab program shouldn't spell the end of substance abuse treatment. Aftercare involves making a sustainable plan for recovery, including ongoing support. This can include sober living arrangements like halfway houses, career counseling, and setting a patient up with community programs like Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) or Narcotics Anonymous (NA).

Treatments

Mental health rehabs focus on helping individuals recover from mental illnesses like bipolar disorder, clinical depression, anxiety disorders, schizophrenia, and more. Mental health professionals at these facilities are trained to understand and treat mental health issues, both in individual and group settings.

Programs

Adult Program
Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.
young-adult-program thumbnail image
Young Adult Program
Young adulthood can be an exciting, yet difficult, time of transition. Individuals in their late teens to mid-20s face unique stressors related to school, jobs, families, and social circles, which can lead to a rise in substance use. Rehab centers with dedicated young adult programs will include activities and amenities that cater to this age group, with an emphasis on specialized counseling, peer socialization, and ongoing aftercare.

Clinical Services

Research clearly demonstrates that recovery is far more successful and sustainable when loved ones like family members participate in rehab and substance abuse treatment. Genetic factors may be at play when it comes to drug and alcohol addiction, as well as mental health issues. Family dynamics often play a critical role in addiction triggers, and if properly educated, family members can be a strong source of support when it comes to rehabilitation.

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

Life skills trainings involve all the skills a person must have in order to function successfully in the world. These include time management, career guidance, money management, and effective communication. Truly successful addiction recovery is based on the ability to not only live substance-free, but to thrive. Life skills teaches the practical necessities of functioning in society, which sets clients up for success in life, and therefore sobriety.

Trauma therapy addresses traumatic incidents from a client's past that are likely affecting their present-day experience. Trauma is often one of the primary triggers and potential causes of addiction, and can stem from child sexual abuse, domestic violence, having a parent with a mental illness, losing one or both parents at a young age, teenage or adult sexual assault, or any number of other factors. The purpose of trauma therapy is to allow a patient to process trauma and move through and past it, with the help of trained and compassionate mental health professionals.

Washtenaw CMH is the best mental healthcare I've ever received. I expected the worst after my hospital release but the case workers and Dr. Hughes have stuck with me through everything. I can't thank them enough. The current communication structure and appointment availability are a little frustrating on the client side, but I know they're trying their best and the level of care is more than worth it.

They don't have case managers they talk,I could not pay rent my debit card was lost so I withdrew 500 dollars cash they said they can't help me .so left and smoked the 500 up since I have no way to pay rent. They told me if I paid for delivery my store items can be shipped and doctor visit call an ambulance they will pick me up. But they will talk to you for hours . Do not call 911 it is illegal to call during a manic episode I was just served notice I have warrants for my arrest and am scheduled to appear before judge karr on 12 13 for stating I would kill myself since I didn't kill myself it's a crime because I called under false reasons.it is therefore officially illegal to be mentally ill in America

They helped me greatly, Angela was a phenomenal caseworker for me. My Doctor listened very well and looked out for my best interest, the team did a great job at making me feel comfortable inside and outside the office. Thanks CMH!

My case manager and psychiatrist have been so helpful but their pharmacy is so horrible. They’re rude, unhelpful and will deny medications even though you literally just walked out the doctors office and turned the corner. Having to argue with them and ask my psych for help is ridiculous. If a physician from CMH prescribed a medication they should FILL IT.
