About Freedom House Sober Living

Freedom House is one of five sober living homes operated by Granite Recovery Centers (GRC). Located northwest of Effingham, New Hampshire, near the High Watch Preserve, this sober living home offers a safe place where you can build on the lessons and habits learned during your inpatient rehab program.

Healing in the Woods

The house itself is a log cabin pressed right up against the woodline, stocked with everything you need to live and recover comfortably. This includes an entertainment area, a kitchen, a dining area and private rooms.

There are also three staff members on site at any given time who enforce the rules, offer encouragement and coaching, and help you progress through the program offered at the house.

This program mostly focuses on helping you reach very specific recovery goals while developing an ever stronger sense of self reliance, confidence and independence.

Network of Recovery Facilities

Freedom House isn’t the only GRC facility in the area. Their associated Green Mountain Treatment Center, just up the road from Freedom House, offers inpatient and outpatient rehab services. It can be a great place to receive treatment if a sober living home doesn’t meet your needs.

This was the best experience at green mountain . They treated me like a human and even when I had a mental breakdown. And needed to be sent to outside facility when I came back they took real good care of me . The mountain saved my life and gave me the tools I needed to succeed and moved on to sober living

My daughter attended treatment at Green Mountain Treatment Center, and I am very grateful for the care and support she received. I had the opportunity to see firsthand the positive impact the program and staff had on her during a very difficult time. The staff was compassionate, professional, and truly invested in her recovery throughout her stay. The nursing team was especially kind and attentive, always making sure her medical needs were addressed with care and respect. The entire treatment team worked together to create a safe and supportive environment. The RCMs worked hard to support clients with planning and follow-through, and the clinical team helped her begin to open up and start working on herself. The techs on the floors and RSS staff were consistently present and attentive, making sure clients were safe and cared for. One moment that stood out was when my daughter was having a very difficult day and wanted to leave. A staff member from Patient Engagement, Kendra, sat with her, supported her, and helped her get through it so she stayed in treatment. That level of compassion made a real difference. Overall, I would highly recommend Green Mountain Treatment Center to anyone seeking help for themselves or a loved one.

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

Sober Living Houses (SLHs), aka sober homes or halfway houses, are safe, substance-free, supportive living facilities for those recovering from substance abuse. Ideal for those who've just been through inpatient or outpatient treatment, SLHs are supervised environments with rules that support sobriety, such as curfews, shared chores, and therapeutic meetings. Residents are also often trained on life skills and coping skills to make it easier to transition into society. SLHs also provide a strong sense of community that can lead to the kind of deep and lasting connections with other sober individuals that supports a new, healthy lifestyle.

Treatments

Substance rehabs focus on helping individuals recover from substance abuse, including alcohol and drug addiction (both illegal and prescription drugs). They often include the opportunity to engage in both individual as well as group therapy.

Clinical Services

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

Life skills trainings involve all the skills a person must have in order to function successfully in the world. These include time management, career guidance, money management, and effective communication. Truly successful addiction recovery is based on the ability to not only live substance-free, but to thrive. Life skills teaches the practical necessities of functioning in society, which sets clients up for success in life, and therefore sobriety.

Only good thing were a handful of really caring staff, most honestly could care less or were extremely dismissive if they learned you did not sign up for their 30 day program. They'll have 5 people corner you and yell at you that you're going to die for a half hour if you say you only want to detox and leave. I didn't want to stay because I didn't have insurance and did not want to pay the out-of-pocket price for the 30 days (plus the facilities are run-down, bugs everywhere, and most of the staff are rude). They refused to let me sign up for insurance for a week since I wasn't staying (they finally gave me computer access right before I was to be discharged after multiple good staff members advocated for me to the higher-ups, but I didn't have enough time with the computer to sort out my insurance mess so I could be set up with coverage to have affordable medication access & local MAT care before leaving detox). They also told me they refused to provide a ride home (to Portland, ME) and I needed to "figure it out". I only had a toxic ex that could give me a ride (all my family is out west, and I cut out all toxic/using friends in Maine). They had actually said yes to giving a ride home twice initially, then no twice after each yes. Then they said they would provide a ride home on my official discharge paperwork the day before discharge, but then gave multiple adament no's the day of discharge. After they told me there are no buses to Portland, and no Uber's in the surrounding towns, I just said I would walk. They made me wait hours for my stuff, and then last minute said they actually could give me a ride all of a sudden. No chance for saying good-bye's to other clients I made friends with. Multiple staff said the place changed drastically ~1-2 years ago after they were bought out by a major corporation. They were super friendly/gave intimate care before, now you're just a number. If this is your only option, get sober. If you have options, don't go. (Google has disproportionate 5-star reviews, check out any other rehab review site.)

Our son arrived at Green Mountain with significant mental health and substance use challenges. Throughout his stay, there were difficult moments, including times when he wanted to leave, struggled with treatment, and tested the patience of those around him. What stood out to us was the commitment of the staff who continued to work with him through those challenges. When our son was struggling, staff members took the time to coach, mentor, encourage, and redirect him rather than simply giving up on him. They treated him with dignity and respect, even during some of his most difficult moments. We were especially grateful for the staff who recognized both his strengths and his challenges and who continued to engage with him when it would have been easier to become discouraged. We also appreciated that the team recognized the complexity and severity of his needs and advocated for the level of care they believed was appropriate. While the road ahead remains challenging, we are thankful for the support, guidance, and compassion many staff members showed our son during his time at Green Mountain. To the staff members who invested their time, patience, and energy in helping him navigate some very difficult moments: thank you. Your efforts mattered, and they will not be forgotten.
