About Tellurian Behavioral Health – Detoxification Center

Tellurian Behavioral Health Detoxification Center is located in Madison, Wisconsin. They offer a safe place for you to detox and prepare for long term treatment for problems with substance use and to guide you through the challenges of addiction and recovery.

They have a Residential Withdrawal Management Program that’s the first step in your road to recovery from extensive alcohol and or drug use. The facility has 29 beds with a staff of trained, credentialed professionals.

It’s a safe and secure detox center that will allow you to focus on recovery above all else. And they want you to detox with dignity in a humane environment.

You’ll work with state certified counselors, a registered nurse, and a board certified physician who specializes in addiction. Your typical stay here will last about three days or fewer but if you’re having more severe opiate withdrawals then you’ll likely benefit from being there longer. The end goal is to make sure you’re prepared to leave and be ready for ongoing substance use treatment.

This facility also has free fentanyl and Narcan strips available. They take most local and national health insurance plans for payment and it should be noted that they can’t take Medicaid or Medicare for their residential treatment program.

What I really like about this detox center is that they provide help for you quickly and they consider your dignity and the fact that despite going through some major problems at the moment you’re still a human being and treat you as such.

The nurses and counselor were attentive and caring but I was charged $880 with insurance for a little less than 2 nights and no one mentioned this cost at all. For getting paper thin scrubs to sleep in and being put into a very cold room with a very uncomfortable bed, it almost felt like I volunteered myself to be put into a jail cell.

I've been reading through these reviews and fortunately have not had it as bad as others. The rooms were quite sparse, but the nurses were attentive and caring, which is something I definitely needed at the time.Unfortunately I still regret my stay on account of the $1000 a night charge (which I was not aware of on admittance.) Insurance brought it down to $560, but that's still a month's worth of rent for some melatonin, whatever other pills it was they gave me, sandwiches, and lots of God talk. It's been quite stressful.

Back in June, I admitted myself to St Mary's for suicidal thoughts. Around 5 am, they said because I'd been drinking hours before that I had to detox, despite the fact that I was sober. So the police practically kidnapped me and took me to this decrepit cess pit to force me to sit in what was basically a jail cell. I had to wait until the breathalyzer reached zero and all they did for me was serve me a crappy breakfast and for lunch was a soggy Italian beef sandwich. I wasn't even there for 12 hours and they have the nerve to want to charge me $1000 and not accept my Medicare insurance. If you ever go to the hospital for mental health reasons, never show up after you've had a few. I basically felt like a criminal just for seeking help! They have no business operating the way they do and no reason to justify their high price tag! These people are kidnappers and scammers! They are the real criminals!

Every plan will have different requirements and out of pocket costs so be sure to get the full details before you start treatment.

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

medically-assisted-detox iconMedically Assisted Detox
Drug and alcohol addiction often takes a heavy toll on one's body. Over time, a physical dependence can develop, meaning the body physiologically needs the substance to function. Detox is the process of removing drugs and/or alcohol from the body, a process that can be lethal if mismanaged. Medical detox is done by licensed medical professionals who monitor vital signs and keep you safe, healthy, and as comfortable as possible as you go through detox and withdrawal. The length of stay at the detoxification program is determined according to the specific needs of the patient.
24-hour icon24-Hour Clinical Care
At certain points in the recovery process, it's important to have support available 24/7. 24-hour clinical care offers a safe environment in which to recover from drug or alcohol addiction in peace, knowing medical detox and other treatment will happen with professionals on hand.

Treatments

The goal of treatment for alcoholism is abstinence. Those with poor social support, poor motivation, or psychiatric disorders tend to relapse within a few years of treatment. For these people, success is measured by longer periods of abstinence, reduced use of alcohol, better health, and improved social functioning. Recovery and Maintenance are usually based on 12 step programs and AA meetings.

The goal of drug rehab in Wisconsin is to address drug addiction as a complex issue that involves physical, mental, and relational aspects. During rehab, treatment focuses on each of these areas and gives you the tools you need to achieve and maintain sobriety.

Opioid rehabs specialize in supporting those recovering from opioid addiction. They treat those suffering from addiction to illegal opioids like heroin, as well as prescription drugs like oxycodone. These centers typically combine both physical as well as mental and emotional support to help stop addiction. Physical support often includes medical detox and subsequent medical support (including medication), and mental support includes in-depth therapy to address the underlying causes of addiction.

Substance rehabs focus on helping individuals recover from substance abuse, including alcohol and drug addiction (both illegal and prescription drugs). They often include the opportunity to engage in both individual as well as group therapy.

Programs

adult-program thumbnail image
Adult Program
Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.
lgbtq-program thumbnail image
LGBTQ Program
Recovery is most successful when clients feel accepted and validated by their peers and treatment providers. Facilities that offer LGBTQ-inclusive programming are committed to creating a safe space where everyone can grow and recover without fear of judgment or discrimination. They will have dedicated policies in place to create a safe and supportive environment that fosters free expression.

Clinical Services

Individual therapy offers you a tailored approach to treat drug addiction. This focuses on your unique needs and offers you personalized support outside of a group setting. You begin to understand what triggers your addictive behavior and develop coping skills that can support your recovery.

Took forever to be discharged and no one even told me what was going on the first day and what to expect. No tour of the facility or anything. Paper scrubs were too thin for how freezing cold it is in there. On top of this the beds are so old and archaic enough to have rings on the bed posts for chains to restrain patients. They would click and clang all night whenever I moved and scare me about being bound in that prison like room. The only reading materials were magazines. If they had a tv I never knew where to find it because no one told me where it was. I was so bored I befriended a damn spider in the bathroom to keep sane.

I hear you seen jails better then this or been to better places blah blah blah well the outpatient teacher got me in for free three times and had saved my life they feed you great and let you smoke and also the nurses get me on meds I needed before I left for heroin then also got me in to a free 14 days and approved 14 more days to a impatient free of. Ost never paid a dime also gave me a great report to probation and communicated to probation good enough to keepe from getting sent back to prison. Gave me such good advice to repair me and my father's relationship and has helped me to become the man I am now to hear from my father I love you twice in one conversation over the the phone witch I never heard him ever say In life and also I still have a great relationship with my family if you aint made it past the first hallway it's cause you didn't wanna be sober. Put ur comments somewhere else that don't affect other people Interested in getting clean cause your negative might just keep others from getting the help they want no two recovery's are the same but hands down without them I wouldnt be alive today and they care it might not be your silver spoon place but also they always try to help even if they can't sometimes you gotta understand places wont always look like Malibu on tv and promise the world they do witb what they got and they do very well every staff was always fare and friendly

I was taken into protective custody for the first time ever because i had been separated from my friends on state street, and I was dumped here. Was thankful for a place to sober up and a lack of criminal charges, vast majority of the staff are nice and seem caring. Problem was, once I was sober (~12:30pm sunday), the acting nurse vehemently insisted I was going through alcohol withdrawls. I have a diagnosis of anxiety and adhd (and i'm being held against my will) and in the middle of taking my vitals the nurse decides to say: "I'm reeeeally sorry but you need to stay another night, and you have no choice, you are the property of wisconsin. YOUR BODY IS POISIONED. I KNOW BECAUSE I'VE BEEN THERE BEFORE. BUT I FINALLY FOUND TREATMENT!" Telling me i had no choice made me panic, I watched my vitals spike, and then they wrote that down as faux evidence of their "diagnosis". Was kept in the facility all day despite feeling fine; luckily the nurse changed over for the night and when I asked again, the second nurse was just as confused as I was regarding why I was still being held. Was let go after that (11:50pm Sunday), and immensely thankful. Between the first nurse calling me "Property of Wisconsin" and then forcing me to stay an extra 12 hours while already sober, I'd call my experience indignifying at the very least. The kicker was an exchange with someone earlier that day that amounted to: Me: "i was brought in with a .2bac and i get that's bad, i will be more responsible" Them: "haha, most people in downtown madison are at a .2 - don't worry about it, you're just unlucky!!" I'd like to thank the staff that do the chores, the counselors, and the night nurse who saw reason, for actually seeming to care about me. *updated release time after checking uber records

Being just over 3 years sober, I'm reminicsing on my various treatment stays - partially because some of them made me worse/worsened my PTSD. Tellurian is definitely a complicated place for me, as I've been in the detox unit at least 4 to 5 times, in residential once, in IOP once, and in the Dane County Care Center twice. If you're lucky enough to have great insurance and can go to residential, then you'll be in a nice place. I can't comment on what IOP might be like now, but it was actually helpful for me back in 2015. However, detox is as bad as people are saying. It was the first place I ever detoxed in, and I wish it had scared me enough to prevent me from relapsing, or forced me to seek better help elsewhere. But one of the worst abd most traumatic times was a night when I had gotten quite drunk and was having a horrible mental breakdown. I don't know why the cops sent me to Tellurian as opposed to a hospital (I guess because I needed to sober up), and though I'm thankful they didn't send me to jail, my experience was heartbreaking. I couldn't calm down, so I was restrained to a wooden board that was like something out of a bad horror movie. I was given several doses of Haldol/Ativan until I passed out - instead of injecting them into my arm, they were injected into my butt . I know that I was a danger to myself, but the restraints were still very traumatizing. I hope that Tellurian no longer uses restraints like those. I've been in several other detox/mental health centers and restraints are no longer used. I also hope that, one day, there will be funding for a place in Madison for addicts to detox peacefully and with compassionate care. But I know that's just wishful thinking on my part.

Stay away at all costs. This place is awful and evil. It's a cellblock with zero privacy and zero dignity. Not every one that needs detox is a criminal so have some respect. Shame on you people for treating people like animals.

I see a lot of negative reviews on here and want to make it clear that they must be from the crisis center or detox center. You’ll see this on a lot of rehabs google reviews. I noticed the rehabs without detox or crisis center will earn higher reviews. I’ve been working with them to get a family member admitted for inpatient rehab and have been very satisfied with their customer service.
