Alter Behavioral Health, in Laguna Beach, California, offers partial hospitalization programs (PHPs), intensive outpatient programs (IOPs), and general outpatient care to adults who need alcohol or drug rehab treatment. PHPs, also known as day programs, offer intensive care without requiring participants to live at the facility. At Alter Behavioral Health, the PHP includes individual, family, and group therapy; tools for managing stress and triggers; recovery education; and relapse prevention. Clients can also participate in classes on emotional management, healthy relationships, and self-esteem. The PHP program lasts 30 to 45 days and includes three to six days of treatment each week.
The IOP offers services that are similar to the PHP. The primary difference is how much time is spent in treatment. The IOP offers Monday-Friday sessions, and participants attend a few sessions per week. Alter Behavioral Health has two IOPs, one that is 40-60 days and one that is 30-40 days.
General outpatient treatment features services similar to the PHP and IOP, but treatment generally occurs once or twice per week. Recreational therapy (aka therapeutic recreation) uses creative and fun activities to help with addiction recovery. Recreational therapists lead patients in entertaining and engaging activities like sports or games; art (drawing, painting, sculpture); drama, music, and dance; and/or community outings (field trips) to improve patients' physical, social, and emotional well-being.
