About New Jersey Behavioral Health Center | Drug & Alcohol Rehab / Mental Health

You can find New Jersey Behavioral Health Center on Old Camplain Road in Hillsborough Township, New Jersey. They offer an intensive partial care program (PCP) providing treatment for those diagnosed with substance use disorder and co-occurring mental health issues.

They also offer outpatient services and an intensive outpatient program (IOP). They are located in a standalone facility with free onsite parking and access to Route 206 to get from your home to treatment.

PC Program Provides Intensive Outpatient Treatment

Their PC program provides an option that is more intensive for treatment than an IOP or regular outpatient services. I like that the program allows you to return home in the evenings, while receiving higher levels of care and treatment. Their integrated care team includes therapists, psychiatrists and healthcare professionals.

They offer daily scheduled therapy sessions and group activities in a comfortable and supportive environment intending to provide you with better coping skills and the ability to handle and redirect challenging situations that may be triggering your addiction. They also focus on accountability and getting you to a level of independence and resiliency.

IOP Treatment with Flexible Care

I find it good to know that their IOP program offers intensive treatment that is a step-down from residential treatment, which requires 24/7 supervision and care. This program allows you to live and work at home as you seek structured, regularly scheduled treatment. Treatment scheduling is less frequent than the PCP, but still provides a high level of care.

Other Forms of Payment

Private insurance refers to any kind of healthcare coverage that isn't from the state or federal government. This includes individual and family plans offered by an employer or purchased from the Insurance Marketplace. Every plan will have different requirements and out of pocket costs so be sure to get the full details before you start treatment.

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

A partial hospitalization program (PHP) is a short-term, intensive outpatient option designed for those with moderate to severe addictions who don't require 24-hour care. PHP treatment is often fully covered by insurance and provides structured programming (i.e. individual and group therapy). A typical partial hospitalization program can meet 3-5 days a week for a minimum of 20 hours, offering intensive treatment during the day while allowing you to return home after. PHP treatment duration can vary based on your progress but averages 90 days.

Clients who are exiting inpatient rehab, those who are experiencing crisis, and those who prefer to live at home while in treatment typically enroll in intensive inpatient programs (IOP). These programs feature frequent and robust care, generally requiring clients to participate in at least nine hours of care weekly, though many intensive outpatient rehabs offer up to 20 treatment hours per week. IOP services typically combine individual, group, and family counseling with recovery education and holistic therapies.

Outpatient rehabs enable clients to receive a full continuum of care while continuing to live at home. They're often ideal for clients who are stepping down from inpatient care but some clients may prefer to transition into outpatient treatment immediately after completing detox. Many outpatient facilities also offer ambulatory medical detox for low-risk clients. Outpatient treatment generally includes psychotherapy and life skills training. Clients in opioid and/or alcohol recovery may also receive medication assisted treatment (MAT).

Participants in 12 step programs engage in a rigorous process of personal growth as a cornerstone of long-term recovery. They are expected to attend anonymous, peer-led 12 step meetings, which are free, open to the public, and available multiple times per day in most communities. Though these programs are rooted in spiritual principles, religious affiliation is not required. Self-selected peer sponsors mentor participants as they work through the 12 steps, learning forgiveness, understanding, acceptance, and accountability.

Clients in a rehab aftercare program have typically completed detox and intensive inpatient and are medically stable. These programs are designed to address addiction recovery as a life-long process. Outpatient counseling and recovery education are typically categorized as drug rehab aftercare, but many clients continue to receive support after being discharged from formal outpatient treatment. Case managers and recovery teams facilitate clients' access to peer coaching, career counseling, 12 step program induction, and related services.

Treatments

Alcoholism (alcohol use disorder) is diagnosed when a person's drinking causes harm or distress and they continue to drink anyway. Often, they have a physical as well as psychological dependence on the substance. To treat alcohol addiction, medical detox is often necessary to safely withdraw from alcohol. Once this is complete, alcohol rehab in New Jersey can provide skills and supports necessary for long-term recovery.

Drug rehab in New Jersey is the process of addressing the complex issues involved with addiction. Challenges are identified and addressed through individual and group counseling. Participants learn how to manage these issues without the use of substances.

You can find comprehensive substance abuse treatment in New Jersey in drug and alcohol rehabs. These treatment programs typically provide a full continuum of care including medically assisted detox, inpatient, outpatient, dual-diagnosis, and intensive outpatient. With a comprehensive substance abuse evaluation, addiction experts provide individualized treatment plans to meet your specific needs. These programs address substance use disorders using evidence-based therapies, like cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT), individual and family counseling, and recovery support groups.

New Jersey has a variety of dual-diagnosis addiction treatment programs, including inpatient and outpatient drug and alcohol rehabs, that recognize the unique needs of individuals with co-occurring substance use disorders and mental health conditions. These programs typically employ evidence-based therapies such as cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), trauma-focused therapy, and art therapy to successfully address co-occurring disorders and support sustained recovery.

Mental health often overlooked, but it's a critical component of addiction treatment and recovery. Mental health disorders can significantly impact your quality of life, relationships, and ability to function on a daily basis. Mental health conditions - depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder - and addiction require specialized treatment just like any other physical illness. When people have a mental health disorder and an addiction simultaneously, dual diagnosis treatment is essential.

Programs

Teen programs are designed to address the unique pressures teens face, pressures that can drive them to experiment with dangerous, addictive substances. They need programs that meet them exactly where they are and give them tools for long-term recovery. Therapy can help teenagers understand and work through underlying issues so they can reclaim the life ahead of them.

Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.

Clinical Services

Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) in New Jersey typically follows a set structure of treatment. The therapist helps clients identify their life challenges and their thoughts surrounding those challenges. The client then learns to identify unhealthy thought patterns and reshape those into healthy patterns of thinking and behavior.

Dialectical means opposing. The premise of dialectical behavior therapy is to learn how two things that seem to be opposite can actually be true. You learn how to accept yourself while also making changes. The focus is on accepting your emotions and changing how you manage them.

The problems caused by eating disorders require specialized eating disorder treatment. This includes a combination of medical care, psychotherapy, nutritional counseling, and medications. Input should come from dieticians, mental health professionals, and medical professionals.

Family therapy sessions address addiction related conflicts and other issues between members of the family unit. By strengthening communication and coping skills, as well as creating a nurturing environment, the family can help support their loved one's recovery.

Group therapy settings offer you a diverse perspective on addiction and recovery. People from a variety of backgrounds gather together to discuss their challenges and speak openly and in a nonjudgmental atmosphere. This enriches your experience and your understanding of addiction and recovery.

During individual therapy for drug addiction, patients receive a customized and tailored approach to understanding their unique circumstances and providing them with targeted interventions. These include coping skills, relapse prevention plans, and developing resilience, all of which are essential for long term recovery.

Motivational interviewing helps clients find their motivation to change. It can be an effective method to work with clients who are angry or hostile or feel insecure about their ability to make changes in their lives. It is often used during addiction treatment or to manage physical health conditions.

Trauma therapy provides a structure to approach healing from past traumatic events that you may have witnessed or experienced. Your therapist will work with you to identify and process these memories. This helps promote a sense of safety and stability and helps you heal emotionally.

Formal Statement Regarding My Experience at NJBHC I am providing this statement to document my experience at NJBHC following my discharge from the program. I was admitted on January 8, 2026. Upon intake into housing, I reviewed and signed documentation outlining the program’s rules and expectations, including requirements related to hygiene, conduct, and interactions between residents. Shortly after admission, I observed repeated violations of these rules by other residents that, to my knowledge, were not addressed in a consistent or meaningful way by staff. For example, one resident (“CW,” referenced here for confidentiality) failed to maintain basic hygiene for an extended period despite daily bathing being a stated requirement. I also personally observed this individual viewing explicit material on a shared television in a common area during evening hours. I reported these concerns. I was later informed that similar behavior had occurred previously. I am not aware of any corrective action taken. I further experienced repeated theft of personal property. On at least four occasions, the same resident entered my room while I was sleeping and removed my PS5 controller. During the final incident, I was informed that a security camera had been covered. Each instance was reported to staff. No real apparent remedial or disciplinary action was taken to protect my property or address the conduct. From my first day in the program, I requested a family session. Despite remaining enrolled for over one month, this session was never scheduled. Communication between staff and my family regarding my status and behavior was, at times, inconsistent with my understanding of events. Due to escalating concerns with the housing environment, I was transferred to the Bridgewater location. There, I became aware of further inconsistencies in rule enforcement. The program maintained a policy prohibiting residents of different genders from entering each other’s units, with discharge cited as a potential consequence. However, I observed or was informed of instances in which other residents engaged in more serious boundary violations without discharge. In contrast, I was reprimanded after returning to my unit to de-escalate following a verbal altercation during group programming. My girlfriend briefly stood in the doorway to check on my wellbeing. Staff intervened immediately and treated this as a significant violation. Another resident reportedly physically pushed a clinician and was not immediately discharged. It was only after a subsequent, more severe incident that removal from the program occurred. My own discharge followed an incident in which I struck a wall in frustration. I did not threaten or physically harm any individual. I did not direct aggression toward staff or peers. This isolated act was characterized as “self-harm” and cited as grounds for discharge due to alleged insubordination and manic behavior. For clarity, I have been evaluated by multiple psychiatrists and diagnosed with OCD, panic disorder, and neurodivergence. I have never been diagnosed with a bipolar spectrum disorder, and none of my treating providers have identified mania as part of my clinical presentation. I was initially informed that I could return to the program after completing a two-week stabilization period. Weeks later, I was told I would not be permitted to return regardless of completion. I recognize that treatment programs must enforce rules to maintain safety. However, based on my experience, enforcement appeared inconsistent and, at times, selective. I believe that my attempts to advocate for myself and raise concerns about these inconsistencies contributed to the decision to discharge me. This statement reflects my personal experience and observations during my enrollment at NJBHC. My intent is to provide an accurate account of events as I experienced them.
