About The Healthy Mind – Psychiatric Services

The Healthy Minds is a psychiatric treatment center that offers comprehensive mental health services. The facility is located in Waterbury, Connecticut. Trauma Informed Addiction and Mental Health Treatment

Waterbury is about 23 miles north of New Haven and conveniently located off CT-8. The treatment center is less than two miles from the historic Palace Theater. There’s a quaint downtown historic district that’s walkable and features Waterbury Green, the original town commons that offers a serene environment for reflection and meditation.

The facility is for adults and seniors, and the team specializes in treating trauma survivors. They have special programs designed to help clients understand the long lasting impact of trauma on their ability to cope.

Key components of the trauma informed care here include ensuring that clients feel safe and comfortable in the environment. They use evidence based therapies in the program including eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) to assist clients in processing traumatic memories.

Holistic Treatment Approach to Mental Health and Addiction

The therapists take a holistic approach to treatment. They incorporate psychological, emotional, and physical care in an integrative treatment model. You’ll learn new and better coping skills so you no longer feel the need to turn to substance use.

Clients receive customized treatment plans that include individual and group therapy. The team provides medication management as well as support for reducing or discontinuing medications if it’s in the client’s best interest.

The team has experience dealing with many types of mental health disorders. These include obsessive compulsive disorder, anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder, ADHD, and more.

Dr. Sha Nawaz is a smart and competent diagnostician. He is not a talk therapist and I understand why some may find him a little impersonal or clinical. But he knows the science, he knows the meds, and often, he knows what's going on with you when everyone else was unable to provide a clear diagnosis and treatment recommendation. The office is very busy but I've never had to wait for more than a few minutes to see the doctor. Calls for refills will get a response within 24 hours. Sooner in emergencies. I have no experience with their counselors but I've heard good things.

If I could give zero stars, I would. I just checked my phone log, I called them 14 times over the past month. They have answered the phone 1 time. I left 6 messages and they called me back once. I figured I would go there in person during the hours on the phone greeting. The door was locked, but I could see a girl at the front desk who was on her cellphone. I called them and the girl looked down at the phone and left the room. A few minutes later she came to the door, and I made an appointment. The day I was supposed to have my telehealth call, I waited, and nobody ended up calling me. Later I got a call from the person I was supposed to talk to via telehealth saying she didn't see the appointment and was sorry, so I rescheduled. Finally, after talking to her for half an hour, I was told I had to make an appointment with another person, who asked me all the same questions. Finally I was able to get a prescription for my ADHD after 6 weeks of jumping through hoops. The meds they prescribed were ineffective, so I called, again, during business hours, and nobody answered the phone. So I drove to the practice and of course, the doors were locked, and the lights were off. It seems like nobody takes this business seriously, like it's some side hustle. The most unprofessional business I have ever dealt with. I see I'm not the only one who has given them 1 star. I should have read the reviews first. I hope I can save someone from going through what I have.

Residential treatment programs are those that offer housing and meals in addition to substance abuse treatment. Rehab facilities that offer residential treatment allow patients to focus solely on recovery, in an environment totally separate from their lives. Some rehab centers specialize in short-term residential treatment (a few days to a week or two), while others solely provide treatment on a long-term basis (several weeks to months). Some offer both, and tailor treatment to the patient's individual requirements.

Treatments

Mental health rehabs focus on helping individuals recover from mental illnesses like bipolar disorder, clinical depression, anxiety disorders, schizophrenia, and more. Mental health professionals at these facilities are trained to understand and treat mental health issues, both in individual and group settings.

Substance rehabs focus on helping individuals recover from substance abuse, including alcohol and drug addiction (both illegal and prescription drugs). They often include the opportunity to engage in both individual as well as group therapy.

I'm not one to ever write reviews but I felt this was important enough to. My husband had an appt with Barbara at The healthy mind psychiatric services, when I made the appt. I made sure to tell them everything that was going on to see if this place would be a good fit. They assured me it would be and they would be able to help. So we waited for the appt. My husband went and said it was the worst experience he has EVER had, she did not even let him get one word in before telling him this isn't the right place for him after 2 minutes of meeting him. Made him feel horrible and on top of saying she would give him numbers to another place that might be a better fit all she did was write down on a piece of paper Griffin Hospital. Seriously??? I understand not everyone is a good fit, but that's why when we made the appt every thing was told upfront and we were told they would be able to help, and to dismiss him the way she did, she should feel ashamed of herself. Very disappointing.

I will be sure my friends and my family will never come here after hearing what my mom had to go through..After explaining her situation with a previous provider at this office who recently had a stroke the current staff was rude over the phone and refused to see her. They explained they were refusing all of her patients because she left the practice a few years ago. THESE ARE REAL PEOPLE.. This is the location my mom and many others met this provider so obviously that’s where they are all turning. So un ethical and inhumane.. these people are left withdrawing and with no where to go.. my mom is left withdrawing..I’d be surprised if these people actually cared about their clients and not just their paychecks. These people took an oath to care for patients…I’m PLEADING with anyone who wants stable CARE..don’t choose this office if your looking for something long term and reliable!!!! So much for “healthy minds” this office is disgusting and just adds to the messed up mental health epidemic. I’ll be sure to spread the word! :) (wishing I could leave 0 stars) Feeling sad for all the patients withdrawing in this situation hoping they know they aren’t worthless. Word spreads like wild fire.

If I could give this practice a zero star rating I would. I am not one to leave ratings but I do say in this circumstance and in this pandemic returning a phone call is definitely a necessity. When prescribing a controlled substance it’s not like you can just go anywhere to maintain the prescription. Leaving messages for three days straight with no return phone call and having to go to an Transfer to an emergency therapist is ridiculous.

Response from the ownerInvalid relative date format:
Hi controlled substances can not be prescribed without office visit .people should not change prescriber .not sure how you are going to justify one .you are not active patient.how irresponsible to rate our practice.

It would be great if they returned calls for appointments. I’ve been calling for weeks and nothing. Lori is awesome but the appointment setting is a nightmare. I unfortunately have to switch dr.s now. Good luck 🤷🏼‍♀️

Took over three calls to get my apointment. My family doctor insisted I needed to see a specialist for medical prescription changes and the anguish I was going through. A referral was made and I was prescribed the same thing the family physician prescribed. I since found I have trigerial neuronal. The counselor one was helpful but billing was an issue and i have tried twice to get another apointment. Really dont need more commotion and to beg for help.
