About Al Anon Family Groups

Al-Anon Family Groups is a lifeline for people who feel alone in the chaos of someone else’s drinking. With its headquarters in Virginia Beach, Virginia, AL-Anon is more than just a support group. It’s a place where you can finally talk about what’s been weighing you down. Whether you’re a parent, sibling, friend or spouse of someone who’s drinking too much, this program gives you a safe space to share and start to heal.

Support for Teens

What makes AI-Anon so powerful is that it’s built on mutual support. Everyone in the room has been there. They’ve dealt with broken promises and confusion. And they’ve learned how to find peace even if the person drinking in their life never chooses recovery. The focus isn’t on fixing anyone else but changing how you respond and making sure you’re taking care of yourself.

Alateen is part of the AI-Anon family and offers a judgement free space for teens dealing with the emotional weight of someone else’s alcohol use. It’s notherapy and it’s not run by adults. It’s actually teens helping teens figure out how to cope in healthy ways.

No Cost to Join

There are no dues or fees to join any AL-Anon or Alateen group. The entire program is planned through voluntary contributions. That way, money is never a barrier here. Meetings happen all over the country, both in person and online, so it’s easy to find one that fits your life.

AL-Anon has been around since 1951 and was founded by Lois Wilson, the wife of Alcoholics Anonymous co-founder Bill Wilson. Over the decades, it’s helped millions of people understand that alcoholism isn’t just a drinking problem but instead a family disease.

Al-Anon is a fantastic fellowship for friends & families odd alcoholics. We learn how to live a happy life. We went on a tour today of the World Service Office (WSO). Our guide made us feel at home We learned so much & met most of the workers - all of which were as friendly as our guide. I'm so glad we went.

Reading my “Courage to Change” daily reading this morning and am so thankful for those who’ve gone before me to write this book and others! So thankful for Al-Anon meetings in San Diego that have helped me get my serenity and sanity back, one day at a time ❤️. I just had to Google map your corporate office and see where you all are. Love the picture of the historic plaque memorializing the founders. Their legacy helps so many of us, again, one day at a time.

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

12-step icon12-Step

12-step programs are addiction recovery models based on Alcoholics Anonymous (AA). A number of substance abuse programs (including some drug and alcohol rehab centers) use the 12 steps as a basis for treatment. Beginning steps involve admitting powerlessness over the addiction and creating a spiritual basis for recovery. Middle steps including making direct amends to those who've been hurt by the addiction, and the final step is to assist others in addiction recovery in the same way. 12-Step offshoots including Narcotics Anonymous (NA), Cocaine Anonymous (CA), Dual Recovery Anonymous (DRA), Sex and Love Addicts Anonymous (SLAA) and Gamblers Anonymous (GA).

outpatient iconOutpatient

Outpatient Programs (OP) are for those seeking mental rehab or drug rehab, but who also stay at home every night. The main difference between outpatient treatment (OP) and intensive outpatient treatment (IOP) lies in the amount of hours the patient spends at the facility. Most of the time an outpatient program is designed for someone who has completed an inpatient stay and is looking to continue their growth in recovery. Outpatient is not meant to be the starting point, it is commonly referred to as aftercare.

Treatments

The goal of treatment for alcoholism is abstinence. Those with poor social support, poor motivation, or psychiatric disorders tend to relapse within a few years of treatment. For these people, success is measured by longer periods of abstinence, reduced use of alcohol, better health, and improved social functioning. Recovery and Maintenance are usually based on 12 step programs and AA meetings.

When you enroll in drug rehab in Virginia, a treatment plan is designed by professional staff in order to help you overcome drug addiction and modify addictive behaviors. This may include evidence-based treatments, group and individual therapy, and relapse prevention.

Substance rehabs focus on helping individuals recover from substance abuse, including alcohol and drug addiction (both illegal and prescription drugs). They often include the opportunity to engage in both individual as well as group therapy.

Programs

Adult Program

Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.

Young Adult Program

Young adulthood can be an exciting, yet difficult, time of transition. Individuals in their late teens to mid-20s face unique stressors related to school, jobs, families, and social circles, which can lead to a rise in substance use. Rehab centers with dedicated young adult programs will include activities and amenities that cater to this age group, with an emphasis on specialized counseling, peer socialization, and ongoing aftercare.

Clinical Services

Research clearly demonstrates that recovery is far more successful and sustainable when loved ones like family members participate in rehab and substance abuse treatment. Genetic factors may be at play when it comes to drug and alcohol addiction, as well as mental health issues. Family dynamics often play a critical role in addiction triggers, and if properly educated, family members can be a strong source of support when it comes to rehabilitation.

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

Great tours of a worldwide organization. Friendly staff. Al-Anon meeting is available on Thursdays at 6 pm in the cafeteria and an Alateen group meets at the same time in Board Room B.
