Alcohol Withdrawal & Blood Pressure: The Essentials

A doctor taking a patient's blood pressure during a checkup

Can Alcohol Raise Your Blood Pressure?

The short answer is yes; alcohol can raise your blood pressure. Those with cardiovascular disease or other health conditions may experience larger impacts on their blood pressure even with moderate alcohol use.

Chronic or heavy use of alcohol can lead to a risk of developing hypertension. If you have health concerns such as diabetes or a history of strokes, you may be more sensitive to the impact of alcohol on your blood pressure.

This can cause your blood pressure to rise when consuming moderate or heavy amounts of alcohol.

Does Alcohol Lower Your Blood Pressure?

Drinking alcohol can lead to increased blood flow, which can cause a temporary and short lived decrease in blood pressure, which is known as post drink vasodilation. This happens almost immediately as you start to consume alcohol.

Over time, this can be harmful for continued blood pressure control due to fluctuations between highs and lows.

It is also not considered a viable option or strategy for lowering your blood pressure because these fluctuations are only temporary.

Why Withdrawal Can Spike Blood Pressure

One of the dangerous side effects of withdrawing from alcohol is the spike in blood pressure.

Your body is going through autonomic hyperactivity during the early stages of withdrawal, which causes elevated blood pressure, a racing heart rate and anxiety. Withdrawal related hypertension is usually transient but can be dangerous.

In addition to withdrawal, other triggers can cause elevated blood pressure, including dehydration, poor sleep, pain, caffeine and nicotine.

Safety During Withdrawal (What to do, When to Get Help)

Danger Signs & When to Seek Urgent Care

Withdrawing can be scary to experience. You should speak with a trained professional before you start the withdrawal process. It is important to understand danger signs and know when to seek medical care.

Some red flags include severe headache, chest pain, vision changes, confusion, seizures and a blood pressure of ≥180/120. It is equally important to monitor symptoms of hypertension because they can lead to a heart attack.

Some of these symptoms can mirror signs of withdrawal, but hypertension can cause additional concerns, such as nose bleeds, shortness of breath, nausea, fatigue and palpitations.

Another major condition that can result from acute alcohol withdrawal is the risk of developing delirium tremens, also known as DTs. This causes body shakes or tremors, symptoms of psychosis and disorientation.

If you notice symptoms of hypertension or delirium tremens, call 911 or access emergency care as soon as possible.

Home Monitoring & Safety Plan (Including When Detox is Needed)

If you are monitoring your detox or withdrawal symptoms from home, it is important to check your blood pressure correctly. Make sure you are seated with your back supported and use the right size cuff.

It is important to log it twice a day in a journal or in the notes app on your smartphone.

Additionally, it is important to avoid caffeine and nicotine for at least 30-60 minutes prior.

If you have a history of severe withdrawal, high baseline blood pressure, limited support or major comorbidities, you might need to receive inpatient medical detox to ensure your safety and wellbeing.

Home detox should only be performed after speaking with a trained professional to determine if it is safe and to create a withdrawal plan.

Timeline: Blood Pressure During & After Quitting Alcohol

First 72 Hours: What BP Swings to Expect

The first 72 hours are known as the peak withdrawal window. You could experience fluctuating blood pressure, tremors, anxiety and insomnia. These symptoms typically occur 24-72 hours after you quit drinking. During this phase, it is important to stay hydrated, rest and have scheduled checks to monitor your blood pressure.

If your blood pressure readings are abnormal or your symptoms worsen, seek medical care. Consider having a friend or family member stay with you during this period to help monitor symptoms and help you seek emergency care if needed.

Blood Pressure After Quitting Alcohol (Week 1–4 and Beyond)

Many people notice improvements in blood pressure within the first week and start to feel their symptoms getting better, though responses will vary. If you are a heavy drinker, improvements are typically seen within 2-4 weeks.

Beyond the stabilization phase, there is an advantage to abstaining from alcohol use. Not only does it help with blood pressure reduction, but it can also help with any cardiovascular risks that you might experience.

It is important to remember that abstinence is the best option for blood pressure and overall cardiovascular health.

Does Quitting Alcohol Lower Blood Pressure?

A doctor speaks with a patient during a withdrawal assessment

What the Evidence Shows & How Long it Takes

Reducing or stopping alcohol use lowers blood pressure in a dose dependent manner. If you stop drinking altogether, you might notice a lower blood pressure faster than someone who reduces their drinking.

However, the biggest effect has been shown in those with heavy use. Many people will see improvements within weeks. Assessment of your blood pressure should be done at different times each day to ensure an accurate average of what your blood pressure is.

What Affects Your Results

Several factors can influence your blood pressure, especially in alcohol withdrawal. It is important to gather a baseline reading before starting the withdrawal process to adequately monitor for changes.

Other factors that can impact your blood pressure include your sodium intake, weight, medication usage, sleep quality and your level of physical activity.

It is important to coordinate with a medical prescriber to make any medication adjustments that might be needed as blood pressure readings improve.

Long Term BP Management in Recovery

The Lifestyle Stack + Follow-Up Plan

In addition to abstaining from alcohol use, lifestyle changes can have a huge impact on your blood pressure and your overall health.

For example:

  • Try different eating habits, such as the DASH method. This includes eating more fruits, vegetables, whole grain foods and lean protein.
    • This method of eating has been known to lower blood pressure and improve overall health.
  • Try engaging in aerobics, resistance or other forms of physical activity.
  • You might also want to set healthy weight goals for yourself.
  •  Limit your sodium intake to <1,500-2,300 mg/day.
  •  Continue to abstain from alcohol use or have medically appropriate limits.
  •  Schedule follow ups with your medical providers and continue with your at home blood pressure logs.

Alcohol & Blood Pressure FAQs

Can Alcohol Raise Your Blood Pressure?

Yes, alcohol use can raise your blood pressure. This happens due to sympathetic stimulation. It is also connected to vascular and hormonal changes. There are more risks associated with higher levels of alcohol use.

It is best to limit or avoid alcohol use altogether for ultimate blood pressure control. If you have other health issues in addition to blood pressure problems, using alcohol can make them worse.

Does Alcohol Lower Your Blood pressure?

It can lower your blood pressure, but it is only for a moment after a drink.

This is not a safe or recommended method of lowering blood pressure. Long term use of alcohol can raise your blood pressure and put you at risk of developing other medical issues. Drinking alcohol to lower blood pressure is not a recommended strategy for the treatment of hypertension.

Blood Pressure After Quitting Alcohol. What’s Typical?

Within the first week, many will start to notice a difference.

However, most people, especially those with heavy alcohol use, will start to notice a change within 2-4 weeks. To help keep track of your progress, it is considered best practice to keep a log and share patterns with your clinician to help guide medication decisions.

Does Quitting Alcohol Lower Blood Pressure if I’m Already on BP Meds?

Oftentimes, your blood pressure will improve when you stop drinking.

If you take any blood pressure medications, it is important to have your blood pressure monitored for changes and have a medical provider evaluate your condition before making any dose adjustments. Never change your medications without first consulting with your doctor.

I checked myself in for alcoholism and opiate abuse. I was drinking so much I was falling and hurting myself and ruining my marriage and on a path to possibly loosing job and even land myself in jail. I was miserable and at rock bottom. Once there after the detox period i started attending group therapy sessions, individual therapy session’s sessions, and working with the techs to become involved in my recovery process. First 5 days i was detoxing and once that was over i got super involved in the program and day by day got better each day. I received excellent nursing and medical provider support. I had amazing group therapy sessions. I was fed delicious meals every day. I had a great case manager and had a primary therapist who was absolutely perfect. The staff was absolutely first class and my treatment started me on a successful path to recovery. This place literally changed my life. They took care of my every need physically, mentally, and emotionally. I highly recommend if you need help for addiction this is where you need to be.

This place has changed my life. I have been to rehabs before but I felt like this place is where I would get clean for the last time since i walked in the doors. The music assisted therapy was perfect for me and the staff is all amazing. The groups are really beneficial and really got down to the core of why i turned to drinking every time something upset me. I felt like they really listened to me and i felt heard and seen. I am excited to continue on with alumni and events and life long friendships.

As my first experience with rehabilitation, I can genuinely say I’m so grateful that this is where I was led. The staff truly cares about every person who walks through their doors, whether they’re there for detox or completing the full program. Throughout my stay, the staff made me feel comfortable, supported, and understood. They all have their own stories as well which makes everyone’s empathy feel even more genuine. Many of them felt more like friends I had known for years rather than people I had just met. I was able to take so much away from this experience and, most importantly, gain tools and perspectives that I know will continue to help me throughout my journey in sobriety. I’ll forever be grateful for the incredible staff, the support they gave me, and all of the amazing people I had the opportunity to meet during my time there. This experience will always hold a special place in my heart, and I couldn’t be more thankful for the role this program has played in helping me move forward. Thank you Avenues Lake Ariel!

My experience with All In Solutions has been a transforming experience from the moment they picked me up from detox. I walked in the door of their facility, broken, physically, mentally and spiritually. I was met at the front door by the intake coordinator. This lady completed my intake in a very welcoming, calming relatable and professional way. Throughout the intake, she kept checking on me by offering me something to drink, eat and reassured me that I was safe and that there was Hope. I was immediately met with the medications, director, nurse, practitioner, nurse practitioner assistant and my amazing case manager. The housing director explained to me what my housing was going to look like. I was always given guidance and explained what was going on at all times. All of these people have been their for me every step of the way! I love the whole program at All In Solutions. The groups were facilitated by very professional, innovated, creative individuals that were not only relatable. Every employee at All In Solutions have been very kind, professional caring, giving people. Most of the employees are in recovery themselves, and even if they were not in recovery, they were still relatable, caring, giving people. I was only gonna stay for two weeks. Then extended to four weeks. Then I extended for six weeks at All In Solutions. I went from no Hope to seeing my life in a whole new perspective. All In Solutions gave me purpose hope perspective! They all gave me my life back in a whole new energized way! I can see clearly now that the rain is gone! I would definitely recommend All In Solutions to anyone! I completed 86-days at Hawaiian Island Recovery, and it was genuinely one of the most effective and supportive treatment experiences I’ve had. From the moment I arrived, the team was accommodating, opened their doors without hesitation, and consistently put my best interests first. In a field where programs can feel rigid or profit-driven, HIR stood out for its pragmatic, patient-centered approach. Their holistic therapy model is modern, layered, and actually produces results. I received comprehensive care that included multiple forms of psychotherapy, EMDR, Parts work, somatic experiencing, massage therapy, acupuncture, and regular yoga. Beyond the clinical work, they provided substantial education on addiction and trauma that gave me a much clearer understanding of the underlying issues I was dealing with. The integration of these modalities felt thoughtful rather than scattered, it addressed both the mind and the body in a way that built real momentum in recovery. The facility itself is exceptional. The house is by far the most luxurious and comfortable treatment environment I’ve experienced. The food was outstanding, nutritious, flavorful, and the chef was always willing to accommodate dietary needs or preferences. Daily life there felt supportive rather than institutional. The house managers are compassionate people who truly understand what residents are going through. Most notably, my case manager Chevone was outstanding. She is highly competent, deeply understanding, and acted as a strong advocate for my needs throughout the program. She was a keystone figure in my time at HIR, coordinating care, pushing for what was truly helpful, and keeping everything aligned with my recovery goals. If you’re serious about addressing addiction and trauma with a high-end, integrative program that doesn’t cut corners on comfort or clinical depth, I would recommend Hawaiian Island Recovery without hesitation. The combination of clinical excellence, luxury accommodations, and genuinely caring staff made a real difference for me.

HIR was exactly what I needed! I was at an absolute low point in my life and this place completely turned things around. The staff was extremely friendly and caring, some have years of recovery themselves so they’re also very easy to relate to. The meetings they took us to were extremely helpful and even fun! Delicious home cooked meals are prepared everyday by a wonderful Chef, yum. I stayed 30 days but wish I could have stayed the full 90. I still go back on alumni days and Big Book Studies to stay in touch with everyone there, I love HIR!

I did 60 days at the residential program and it genuinely changed my life. This wasn’t my first time in rehab I’d been to two other facilities on the mainland that didn’t stick. What was different here is that they built my treatment plan around me specifically, not a one-size-fits-all schedule. The therapists actually listened. The staff-to-client ratio is small so you’re not just a number. Frank and Fernando were incredible to work with during individual and group sessions. Being on the Big Island away from my usual environment and triggers gave me space to actually focus. I’ve been sober since completing the program and I credit this place for that.

Footprints was an absolutely stellar facility to go to after completing inpatient addiction treatment. The staff were all very patient and understanding during my biggest ups and downs during treatment, and I never felt any judgement even at my lowest points. Recovery is such a serious rock to carry but the groups and providers helped me collect the tools necessary to be able to tackle this journey on my own. The nursing team was incredibly helpful in finding me medications that are actually helping my mental health and addiction cravings. I’ve had more success in the three months I got to share with Footprints than the years I’ve worked with my primary care and therapist. Andrew with case management is hilarious and hugely helpful with resources and managing work and life alongside treatment. Anika is an incredible therapist and I am sad to leave her care, but know she will continue to do amazing things for other clients. If you are struggling with any substance abuse, I highly recommend seeking help with Footprints. They will absolutely get you back on your feet.

As a family member, I cannot say enough wonderful things about Mountainside Treatment Center in Huntington. From the very beginning, the staff treated both our loved one and our family with compassion, respect, and genuine care during an incredibly difficult time. The communication throughout the process was thoughtful and professional, and it was clear that everyone involved truly wanted the best possible outcome. Mountainside provides best-in-class treatment in a safe, supportive, and welcoming environment. Knowing our loved one was in such caring and capable hands gave us comfort and hope when we needed it most. We are deeply grateful for the support, guidance, and dedication of the entire team. Highly recommend.

As a clinical social worker running a local group practice, I regularly collaborate and refer clients to Mountainside Treatment Center. Their staff has always been exceptional, especially Courtney Hulse and Dan Sexton, who go above and beyond in tailoring their treatment plans for each client and family. Mountainside serves as a tremendous resource, providing quality substance abuse treatment that is critically needed here on Long Island. We are enthusiastic about continuing to work with Mountainside to best serve our community and families. Thank you for all you do Mountainside. Highly recommend!
