Alcohol Withdrawal & Blood Pressure: The Essentials

A doctor taking a patient's blood pressure during a checkup

Can Alcohol Raise Your Blood Pressure?

The short answer is yes; alcohol can raise your blood pressure. Those with cardiovascular disease or other health conditions may experience larger impacts on their blood pressure even with moderate alcohol use.

Chronic or heavy use of alcohol can lead to a risk of developing hypertension. If you have health concerns such as diabetes or a history of strokes, you may be more sensitive to the impact of alcohol on your blood pressure.

This can cause your blood pressure to rise when consuming moderate or heavy amounts of alcohol.

Does Alcohol Lower Your Blood Pressure?

Drinking alcohol can lead to increased blood flow, which can cause a temporary and short lived decrease in blood pressure, which is known as post drink vasodilation. This happens almost immediately as you start to consume alcohol.

Over time, this can be harmful for continued blood pressure control due to fluctuations between highs and lows.

It is also not considered a viable option or strategy for lowering your blood pressure because these fluctuations are only temporary.

Why Withdrawal Can Spike Blood Pressure

One of the dangerous side effects of withdrawing from alcohol is the spike in blood pressure.

Your body is going through autonomic hyperactivity during the early stages of withdrawal, which causes elevated blood pressure, a racing heart rate and anxiety. Withdrawal related hypertension is usually transient but can be dangerous.

In addition to withdrawal, other triggers can cause elevated blood pressure, including dehydration, poor sleep, pain, caffeine and nicotine.

Safety During Withdrawal (What to do, When to Get Help)

Danger Signs & When to Seek Urgent Care

Withdrawing can be scary to experience. You should speak with a trained professional before you start the withdrawal process. It is important to understand danger signs and know when to seek medical care.

Some red flags include severe headache, chest pain, vision changes, confusion, seizures and a blood pressure of ≥180/120. It is equally important to monitor symptoms of hypertension because they can lead to a heart attack.

Some of these symptoms can mirror signs of withdrawal, but hypertension can cause additional concerns, such as nose bleeds, shortness of breath, nausea, fatigue and palpitations.

Another major condition that can result from acute alcohol withdrawal is the risk of developing delirium tremens, also known as DTs. This causes body shakes or tremors, symptoms of psychosis and disorientation.

If you notice symptoms of hypertension or delirium tremens, call 911 or access emergency care as soon as possible.

Home Monitoring & Safety Plan (Including When Detox is Needed)

If you are monitoring your detox or withdrawal symptoms from home, it is important to check your blood pressure correctly. Make sure you are seated with your back supported and use the right size cuff.

It is important to log it twice a day in a journal or in the notes app on your smartphone.

Additionally, it is important to avoid caffeine and nicotine for at least 30-60 minutes prior.

If you have a history of severe withdrawal, high baseline blood pressure, limited support or major comorbidities, you might need to receive medical detox to ensure your safety and wellbeing.

Home detox should only be performed after speaking with a trained professional to determine if it is safe and to create a withdrawal plan.

Timeline: Blood Pressure During & After Quitting Alcohol

First 72 Hours: What BP Swings to Expect

The first 72 hours are known as the peak withdrawal window. You could experience fluctuating blood pressure, tremors, anxiety and insomnia. These symptoms typically occur 24-72 hours after you quit drinking. During this phase, it is important to stay hydrated, rest and have scheduled checks to monitor your blood pressure.

If your blood pressure readings are abnormal or your symptoms worsen, seek medical care. Consider having a friend or family member stay with you during this period to help monitor symptoms and help you seek emergency care if needed.

Blood Pressure After Quitting Alcohol (Week 1–4 and Beyond)

Many people notice improvements in blood pressure within the first week and start to feel their symptoms getting better, though responses will vary. If you are a heavy drinker, improvements are typically seen within 2-4 weeks.

Beyond the stabilization phase, there is an advantage to abstaining from alcohol use. Not only does it help with blood pressure reduction, but it can also help with any cardiovascular risks that you might experience.

It is important to remember that abstinence is the best option for blood pressure and overall cardiovascular health.

Does Quitting Alcohol Lower Blood Pressure?

A doctor speaks with a patient during a withdrawal assessment

What the Evidence Shows & How Long it Takes

Reducing or stopping alcohol use lowers blood pressure in a dose dependent manner. If you stop drinking altogether, you might notice a lower blood pressure faster than someone who reduces their drinking.

However, the biggest effect has been shown in those with heavy use. Many people will see improvements within weeks. Assessment of your blood pressure should be done at different times each day to ensure an accurate average of what your blood pressure is.

What Affects Your Results

Several factors can influence your blood pressure, especially in alcohol withdrawal. It is important to gather a baseline reading before starting the withdrawal process to adequately monitor for changes.

Other factors that can impact your blood pressure include your sodium intake, weight, medication usage, sleep quality and your level of physical activity.

It is important to coordinate with a medical prescriber to make any medication adjustments that might be needed as blood pressure readings improve.

Long Term BP Management in Recovery

The Lifestyle Stack + Follow-Up Plan

In addition to abstaining from alcohol use, lifestyle changes can have a huge impact on your blood pressure and your overall health.

For example:

  • Try different eating habits, such as the DASH method. This includes eating more fruits, vegetables, whole grain foods and lean protein.
    • This method of eating has been known to lower blood pressure and improve overall health.
  • Try engaging in aerobics, resistance or other forms of physical activity.
  • You might also want to set healthy weight goals for yourself.
  •  Limit your sodium intake to <1,500-2,300 mg/day.
  •  Continue to abstain from alcohol use or have medically appropriate limits.
  •  Schedule follow ups with your medical providers and continue with your at home blood pressure logs.

Alcohol & Blood Pressure FAQs

Can Alcohol Raise Your Blood Pressure?

Yes, alcohol use can raise your blood pressure. This happens due to sympathetic stimulation. It is also connected to vascular and hormonal changes. There are more risks associated with higher levels of alcohol use.

It is best to limit or avoid alcohol use altogether for ultimate blood pressure control. If you have other health issues in addition to blood pressure problems, using alcohol can make them worse.

Does Alcohol Lower Your Blood pressure?

It can lower your blood pressure, but it is only for a moment after a drink.

This is not a safe or recommended method of lowering blood pressure. Long term use of alcohol can raise your blood pressure and put you at risk of developing other medical issues. Drinking alcohol to lower blood pressure is not a recommended strategy for the treatment of hypertension.

Blood Pressure After Quitting Alcohol. What’s Typical?

Within the first week, many will start to notice a difference.

However, most people, especially those with heavy alcohol use, will start to notice a change within 2-4 weeks. To help keep track of your progress, it is considered best practice to keep a log and share patterns with your clinician to help guide medication decisions.

Does Quitting Alcohol Lower Blood Pressure if I’m Already on BP Meds?

Oftentimes, your blood pressure will improve when you stop drinking.

If you take any blood pressure medications, it is important to have your blood pressure monitored for changes and have a medical provider evaluate your condition before making any dose adjustments. Never change your medications without first consulting with your doctor.

I can truly say that what I came to accomplish in a medically assisted detox was👍🏾. As a person with pre-existing medical conditions, having a competent medical staff to entrust my regular medical routine to was huge! P.A. Kahlia and nursing staff were very helpful – except for a few follow-up concerns during overnight staffing. I will say just like any other care facility, you will probably feel some concern about overall processes,, but over all I would consider it a good facility.

They treat you like a princess. I went in there in the process of divorce down to skin and bones, and very depressed. Jesus restored me and they were there to help me get back to him! I attended this program after many failed attempts at other secular AA NA rehabs. S2L showed me who God is, His love, and who God says I am. It was through the programs staff and the many people that surround them that I got to know Jesus Christ. John 8:36 reads “So if the Son sets you free, you are truly free”.. I wasn’t just looking for sobriety, I was looking for freedom in Christ and S2L showed me that. Today I am a new creation 2 Corinthians 5:17. Anybody who is struggling with the weight of this world or knows someone who is (whatever it may be) I highly encourage this program.

I think this is a wonderful rehab, the facilities are beautiful, the food is amazing (I have never even had food this good at a restaurant), and above all they have really helped my husband. Obviously anyone that first goes to rehab isn’t happy with their situation but in just two short months he was a changed person. The work they have them do on themselves got him to finally see why drugs and alcohol are no way of life. He’s finally sober and actually enjoying it! This rehab helped him so much he actually chose to stay LONGER, and I am for once excited for what the future can bring.

My experience here throughout my last few months has completely changed my whole outlook on life. Before I got here I thought my life was going towards the end. My body was failing and mental state was terrible. Every part of the program touches on every aspect of the addicts life. Now that I have finished the program and started living daily life with all of the gains I got throughout the program, failure isn’t an option. I know I can truly be happy sober now. I finally gained back the love and support from my life partner and best friend I always knew was still there. My mom also believes in me again which is so important to me. The possibilities and happiness are endless now. Thank you Elevate.

The first phone call i had was an intake with Allison. She is the one who convinced me to come to Rise. She is amazing. She is there from the beginning to the end if you need anything. The first person I met at rise was Nam. He is the man he’s there for you all the time he works 20 hours a day. The man is amazing. Next, I met Zac the nurse he’s such a cool dude and listens to you and takes whatever concerns you have and it gets it fixed for you. As far as nurses Daisy, David and Nina were great. If you have real medical issues, I would not go there Dr.Raskin is a first class clown. The first time I met him, he spoke to me in the kitchen for 30 seconds and ran away. The next time I saw him was on Zoom for about 60 seconds and he got off. I had a lot of medical issues and he was not there for me. I was very disappointed in that. I refuse to see him after that that’s one of the few bad things about Rise is the doctor. If he was my employee he’d be fired. I complained about him a lot. The counselor Michael, Josh And Beth were great they listen to you and make you feel like they are helping you out. A special shout out to Cat My hippie dippy friend she is the one who does yoga and meditation. I never did that in my life before I’m an older man and she was amazing. I’m from the East Coast. The food was not that great. I was disappointed in that they have a private chef. James was the best chef That’s the only thing I could say about the food. Very disappointing. That being said, I would definitely go to Rise. They save my marriage and they save my life. Thank you to the team if I left anybody out, I’m sorry.

There are very few people in life who truly believe in you when you’ve completely lost belief in yourself. For me, one of those people has always been Ron and the entire team at Rise in Malibu. I’ve known Ron for a while , and through every chapter, he has remained someone who genuinely cares, shows up, and sees the person beneath the struggle. That kind of authenticity is rare. His leadership and heart are reflected throughout the entire program and staff. Dr. Mark, Sheri, and everyone at Rise create an environment that is compassionate, professional, supportive, and deeply human. They don’t treat people like problems to fix they treat them like people worth fighting for. That distinction matters more than words can explain. What makes Rise special is that it never felt transactional to me. It felt personal. Real care, real connection, real support, and people who continue to stay connected long after treatment ends. That says everything. And for me personally, recovery wasn’t something that necessarily “landed” the very first time. Sometimes the spiritual experience happens when it’s truly ready to happen. What I can say today, sitting here over 16 months sober, is that Rise helped give me the tools, foundation, support, and perspective that allowed that change to finally take root in a real way. When the moment came, I knew how to move forward because of what I had learned there. That’s something I’ll carry with me for the rest of my life! I can honestly say I would recommend Rise in Malibu to anyone looking for genuine help, guidance, and people who truly care about recovery and human beings as a whole. Five stars isn’t enough for the impact they’ve had on my life. Thank you, Ron, and thank you to the entire Rise family!

My time in the PHP program at STR was truly life-changing. I came in struggling with trauma and uncertainty, and the staff created a safe, supportive space where I could begin to heal and grow. A special thank you to my case manager Katie for helping me navigate legal issues and plan my next steps when I felt overwhelmed. I’m also deeply grateful to my therapists Matt, Ashley, and Blake, as well as Lauren, the intern, who all supported me through the hardest parts of recovery. Leigh Anne, our house lead behavioral health tech, kept communication open and made sure everyone felt heard. Monique, the nurse practitioner, was incredibly compassionate and helped me take my first steps toward accepting my need to change pronouns and pursue gender-affirming care.
