About Oxford House
Oxford House in Salem, Ohio is a nonprofit and democratically run sober living home for adult men recovering from substance use disorders. This is a self supporting and drug free residence that provides a structured and peer driven environment. You will foster long term sobriety without professional staff. This helps to emphasize personal responsibility and community support.
Democratically Run Household
The program offers transitional housing where you share household responsibilities and expenses. You pay an equal share for rent, utilities and staples. The home has a capacity of up to 10 men and they use a democratic model to operate. Residents elect officers every six months to manage operations.
Your Timeline but Strict Sobriety
What stood out to me is that you can stay at the house for as long as you like. You will need to pay your share of house expenses, not be disruptive and stay drug and alcohol free.
The average stay is about a year but you can stay longer as long as you are in good standing. You must remain substance free. If you relapse, it will result in your immediate expulsion. This is done to ensure a safe and sober space for the other residents.
Peer Led Environment
Group support meetings will be held daily to share recovery experiences to help encourage accountability. Their specialized services focus on men by providing a gender specific environment to address unique recovery challenges.
Recovery support includes peer mentoring and access to local resources like counseling or employment services. No medical treatment or formal therapy is provided on site. Limited beds can pose challenges but clients have praised the regular meetings and supportive community.

Addiction Treatments
Treatments
The goal of treatment for alcoholism is abstinence. Those with poor social support, poor motivation, or psychiatric disorders tend to relapse within a few years of treatment. For these people, success is measured by longer periods of abstinence, reduced use of alcohol, better health, and improved social functioning. Recovery and Maintenance are usually based on 12 step programs and AA meetings.

These centers typically combine both physical as well as mental and emotional support to help stop addiction. Physical support often includes medical detox and subsequent medical support (including medication), and mental support includes in-depth therapy to address the underlying causes of addiction.
