Summit Achievement in Fryeburg, Maine, provides a special program for 13 to 20 year olds who are struggling with substance abuse or experimentation. This licensed and accredited residential treatment center is located in the stunning White Mountains region of Maine. My son, who quite honestly did not want to go to Summit at first, speaks so fondly of his time there. He always emphasizes how kind the staff is - the therapists, the teachers, and the guides. The weekly expectations for kids to reach therapeutic, academic, and expedition goals is a holistic approach and allows those who struggle in certain areas to shine in others. My son says the expeditions were fun, purposeful, and challenging. He began to feel confident again and his self-esteem was boosted. On the last day when his peers gathered in a circle and shared loving words about my son, it was incredibly moving. Here was a group of teens, all of them struggling in their own right, sharing such profound sentiments. I wish all teens have the opportunity to become such supportive peers and so emotionally literate.

Sending our son away from home when he was completely “stuck” in life with his anxiety etc, was one of the hardest things we ever had to do, and the hardest thing he ever had to do. Thankfully we put our full trust in Summit Achievement with Mike, Nick and so many of the guides and staff who made it the tremendously life changing experience it was for our son. He has grown into an amazing young man who is about to graduate college. He has learned to navigate life when it becomes difficult, so that he can move forward in a stronger and more confident way. My husband and I too learned so much about our role as his parents and ways to support him. Over the years he has even spoken about some of the tools he learned at Summit and how it changed his life. Sometimes it can be with humor when he is quoting something he learned at Summit but always with thankfulness as he has literally said as hard as it was that “Summit saved him”. We are ever so grateful for his experience there and the unbelievably dedicated staff the makes Summit what it is. Anne M

There are not enough positive adjectives to use to describe our Summit experience. I would give them 10 stars if I could. They exceeded every hope (not just expectation) that we had for our experience. The communication, the quality of the staff, the concern showed to our child, the quality of the therapy, EVERY single thing was done with kindness, compassion, and excellence. Above all else, Summit always put the needs of our child and our family first in every decision and every conversation. I can’t imagine a better place to care for your child.

If you're wondering if common ground counseling is the right place for you, I can share that I've only had an empathetic,Caring, loving person sitting across from me,listening and hearing me without judgement while I poured my forever secrets and horrible things I've done out. Best choice ive ever made! - I've never been pushed to do anything I didnt want to do. Maybe I was hesitant to do them, but choosing to do things based on the fact that MY WAY wasnt working for me. I had to take the suggestions given after all, it was the Guidence I needed for a new way of life. I came from a background of Substance Use Disorder, trauma, broken relationships, depression, bad marriages, abandonment as a child, the foster care system, codependency issues, depression and the list goes on.... I had to be ready and I had to do the work but I have been a person in Recovery from life's experiences for 3 1/2 years and without the help from Common Ground Counseling I believe I wouldn't be here today. The Gift was there, I just had to pick up the phone and go get it.I will forever be grateful for what's been given to me. The person I once was is not the person I am today! Thanks Common Ground!

I thought Green Mountain Treatment Center (part of Granite Recovery Centers) was just the right kind of place my loved one needed. It helped him to kick off his recovery. He is truly a changed person since coming home and is doing the work needed to keep him sober. The staff was and continues to be helpful by offering weekly support for family members. Support is offered to family members while your loved one is in treatment and even when they come home and you are figuring out how to live your life with someone in recovery.

From the staff to the program to the view it’s all amazing all the way around. I came without any expectations and I’ve been met with nothing but a great overall experience. At every corner you’re met with recovery, every hallway every stairwell every room. Recovery. When you go to bed. Recovery. When you wake up. Recovery. I eat sleep and think recovery. “Oh who’s knocking at my door at 3 pm?”. You guessed it. Recovery. So if you’re thinking about where to go for your next dry spin or maybe you’re ready to finally give in so you’re finally not the POS every one thinks you are come here and get recovered. This place and the staff here are amazing, when I was at my lowest casco bay took me in. I followed their program and the steps and am now going on 4 months sober. And many many more to go. If you're looking for a place to learn how to get sober and stay sober check out Casco Bay Recovery! I had the opportunity to take advantage of their PHP(partial hospitalized patient) program and their IOP(intensive out patient) program. The PHP program runs 6 days a week 6 hours a day including a long lunch. You get to spend the day with BHTs and clinical group facilitators who educate you on the disease model, model of addiction and the 12 steps of AA. Along with fun activitys, meditation and ice breakers. The IOP program is great when you have some sobriety time under belt and enables you to focus on your recovery while also tending to family life and work. It runs 4 days a week, two and half hours a day with an option of morning or night depending on your schedule. The structure of the program includes meeting with a councler and psychiatric nurse practicioner. Leslie Briggs will bring you through the admissions process which is simple and convienent. I had a positive experience with clinical including Matt, Amanda, Bella and Kevin. The Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner, Julie was very helpful and caring. BHT Noah doesn't disappoint when it comes to exciting activitys, being a good listener and making you laugh. You'll get a chance to meet Program Coordinator Mike. B who is very recovery smart and is the man to talk to when you need realistic, direct and positively impactful input. In addition to all the things they can and will do for you, they will direct you toward sober living for men and women, meetings, sponsorship, Family Restored Meetings for your non-alcoholic friends and family and more. Create friendships and connections that will strenthen your recovery community and foundation at Casco Bay Recovery! -Casco Bay Graduate Desmond. A (6 months sober)

My experience at Providence Retreat was nothing short of life-changing. This is not a typical rehab, and that distinction matters. From the moment I arrived, it was clear that this was a place designed for deep spiritual work rather than clinical treatment—and that is exactly what I needed. Providence Retreat offers something rare: space. Space to slow down, to reflect, and to engage fully with the Twelve Steps in a meaningful and intentional way. There is no overload of information or constant programming. Instead, you are guided methodically through the Big Book of Alcoholics Anonymous, allowing the process to unfold with clarity and depth. What stood out most to me was the sincerity of the men leading the retreat. They are not professionals detached from the work—they are men who have walked this path themselves and are committed to passing on what was freely given to them. That authenticity creates an environment of trust, humility, and honesty that is difficult to put into words. Providence Retreat is especially powerful for men who may have struggled in traditional treatment settings or stalled in their step work. It offers a new experience—one rooted in spiritual principles, accountability, and genuine human connection. The retreat does not promise overnight change, nor does it claim to be the end of the journey. It is the beginning. Spiritual progress is the goal, and if persisted in, the results truly are great. Seeing alumni return to meetings to give back says everything about the impact of this place. Providence Retreat helped lay the solid foundation for my recovery and gave me tools I continue to use today. I am deeply grateful for the experience and would recommend it to any man seeking a sincere, spiritually grounded path forward.

My son was here for a little over a week. No place is perfect but the night he went there I was worried sick by the end of his stay I can say I put trust into the staff there. It is a nice facility for what it is. I liked how the kids were able to go outside and do some activities other than being confined to a room. My son mentioned he was cold one night and a staff member put blankets in the dryer so they were warm for him. Way to go seriously deserves recognition. This job is not easy! I also liked how there was a plan set in place for my son and zoom meetings were set up for me to attend when I couldn’t make it down there because I live over 3 hours away. The reception staff and security guards who met me at the front were all welcoming and nice. The only real complaint I have that made me a little uneasy was that my son had a cup of water dumped over his head by another patient and hurt his foot outside both times I was not contacted nor his dad of these events. Overal good facility for what it is. Thank you all for watching over my son praying for better days ahead. 🙏

Don't think for ONE SECOND that you're going to help the day you call, you won't. Getting into a state sanctioned program takes time and there are hoops to go through, for a reason. They give you an appointment to come back and they make sure that you have NO open scripts for opiates, paperwork, paperwork, see a doctor, see a nurse, see a counselor, and this is all at 6am. You may be going through withdrawals by the time you dose, around 1pm. YOU WILL NOT GET HELP THE DAY YOU CALL!!!!! Don't think you will. If you need help NOW, go to the hospital or try Kratom. Cap is awesome but you have to put your recovery ahead of the people and the counselors. Not gonna sugar coat this subject at all.

After getting out of the Marine Corps I heard that the VA is extremely difficult to deal with. This has not been my experience here at all. The staff and Dr's care and help get me the appointments needed.

When I walked through the doors at Crossroads for residential treatment, I was dying—inside and out. Addiction and an eating disorder had taken everything from me. I was exhausted, hopeless, and scared. I didn’t know who I was anymore, and I didn’t believe I could be saved. But slowly, with the unwavering support of the clinicians, psychiatrist, nurse, dietitian, and every member of the staff, something inside me began to shift. For the first time in a long time, I felt seen. I felt cared for. And I started to believe that healing was actually possible. Residential treatment gave me what I needed most: safety, stability, and space to breathe. I was taught the foundations of DBT and CBT, and I was given healthy, practical coping skills—tools that I still carry with me every day. My 1:1 sessions with my clinician and dietitian helped me uncover pieces of myself I’d buried for years. I was met with kindness, not judgment. Compassion, not shame. And that changed everything. When I moved into PHP, I continued learning how to live again. I started facing my trauma head-on and finally began to understand just how deeply it had shaped my relationship with substances, food, and myself. That insight was painful—but it was also freeing. IOP supported me as I began stepping back into the world. It was scary, but I wasn’t alone. Crossroads gave me a soft place to land while I figured out how to walk through life on new, steadier legs. Even now, I continue to meet with my clinician weekly, still learning, still growing. The truth is, Crossroads gave me more than treatment—they gave me my life back. In the year since I arrived, I’ve changed in ways I never thought were possible. I’ve discovered who I am beyond my pain. I’ve built a new identity, one that’s no longer defined by alcoholism and anorexia. For the first time in my life, I feel safe in my body and in the world. I am endlessly grateful. Crossroads didn’t just help me recover—they helped me come home to myself. And I truly mean it when I say: this program saved my life.
