Let me start from the beginning. Nurse Jamie, who assists Dr Leah Mergen, is absolutely marvelous! The appointment didn't start on time, which is no big deal. I've worked many years in medicine and recognize the scheduling complications of any office, or simply put, a crazy day. When Jamie came out to greet us for the first time, I was yapping with one of my friends who works at Avera. As my partner and I wrapped up our conversation with her and headed back to the room, Jamie was kind, interested in our lives, and very attentive. Because women's medicine can be daunting and intrusive at times, she continued to express who she will listen to anything we were willing to talk about without judgement. Jamie spent quite a bit of time in the room getting to know us and was very excited for our future plans. Jamie is a comprehensive nurse who is highly skilled, and should be recognized for her attributes. Avera is lucky to have her.
Next, we move on to Dr Leah Mergen. I was encouraged to see her as my primary, as she's known for her patient-centered care and dedication. I was not let down. Dr Mergen offers a multidisciplinary approach to medicine and understands how complex one chief complaint can be. Dr Mergen listens to your concerns and comments, gives options and answers, and not only follows up, but gives you instructions for next steps.
To say the least, I am very pleased with the care I received!

Canton, SD | Keystone Treatment Center is located on 30 acres of sprawling plains in Canton, South Dakota. It’s a residential addiction treatment center that serves young adults and adult men and women. They treat alcohol and drug addiction, co-occurring disorders and gambling addiction. They also have dedicated programs for those in the military, Native Amer | Treatments Programs Payment Options | I volunteered to enter the outpatient program at Keystone. The program is very focused and exceptional.
The most important factor in the treatment are the group facilitators.
I want to mention Julie who was our team counselor and facilitator. Julie is the real deal; she has been through treatment herself, she is very authentic and sincere.
She understands exactly what all group members are going through.. She listens and hears what is being said and understands what is in the hearts of everyone.
The 6 week treatment was very effective.
I would highly recommend Keystone as a program for those who are addicted.

As with most mental health facilities, some of the practitioners are cold and uncaring while others pour their hearts into their work. One significant pro is that the rooms are private. Just be aware that the staff will constantly be checking on you if you are in your room alone. Sometimes this disrupts sleep and they will not care about leaving your door open and the light shining in.
If you are coming here due to legal reasons or need to just escape the traumas of modern living, I do think that a few weeks stay has the potential to heal much.
Doing the 90 day program, though, of course, is labor intensive and exhausting.
The rules and regulations of the Eleva Care handbook are restrictive because they've had people violate minute rules and minutiae and get away with inappropriate behavior.
Overall, staff really helped me get my head on straight and I am very grateful to have gotten back in touch with my true self and connect with inner values that I hold.
If you're having severe and persistent mental illness, I do recommend this treatment facility. I found the experience of being here for a sustained length of time to be very humanizing.

Many of the people posting negative comments are not complaining about Avera, they are complaining about a particular doctor. The trick here, as it is in every clinic in the country, is getting a doctor (what we used to call a GP I guess) that's right for you. I have Dr. Lilgaroth, she is great, so I gave 5 stars. My wife has had bad experiences in the past with so many male drs (the old "you're a woman & I'm both a man AND a doctor, so I'm gonna ignore what you say") that she finally demanded a female doctor, and that happened to work out great for her. Gender may not have been the reason, she may just have got a great dr-- the important thing is, my wife was comfortable with her. When her female dr retired, she ended up with a male dr (Dr Gunderson, I believe?) and she says he is great. Ya just gotta shop around and get a doc that is a fit for you-- that is true of any clinic, not just Avera. But I've also had pretty much all positive experiences with other parts of the clinic-- reception, labs, nurses, Avera hospitals, even the money people. (Btw, I'm not a nice guy or a pollyanna; I am by nature an extremely demanding pain in the, uh, rear.)

Sioux Falls, SD | The Sioux Falls, South Dakota, Avera Behavioral Health Hospital provides addiction and mental health care services. They serve people of all ages with multiple services, including partial hospitalization programs, inpatient programs, and outpatient programs. This is a 154 bed facility with private rooms and modern amenities. I always repeat the ma | Treatments Programs Payment Options | This place saved my life. I was admitted a little over a year ago due to an extreme episode of psychosis brought on by a two year long depressive episode and a very heavy dose of cannabis. I stayed for about three weeks.
I was a mess before I was hospitalized. I was unemployed, hadn't left my house more than a few times in the previous year, and was too exhausted and paranoid to reach for anything I wanted.
The amazing people here set me up with services outside the hospital and I now have a wonderful psychiatrist, therapist, ARMHS workers, and social work case manager.
Since my stay, I have managed to:
- get a part time job with amazing coworkers and a very understanding manager
- find the right medications for me
- get my name legally changed (I am transgender and the staff here were wonderful with me)
- get my GED (I was severely educationally neglected by my parents, who refused to enroll me in school and who never educated me in certain subjects or beyond 6th grade) and enroll in my associate's in computer science, which I will be starting in June! I haven't yet decided what I want to do for a career - I have some time - but I think I would like to be a full stack developer
- get engaged! I am still with one of my partners that I had at the time of my stay and we plan to get married in the next couple of years
- improve my relationship with my mom
- work through trauma with my therapist (EMDR is amazing)
- make new friends
- go outside more; I go to work and the library and I hang out with friends
- actually have energy for personal projects beyond just my obligations due to my medication stabilizing my manic/depressive episodes and psychosis
I cannot overstate how wonderful the staff were, I wish I could remember everyone's names. I remember so many faces and so much kindness towards me. Playing cards and doing puzzles with the older people made me so happy. I remember a lady encouraging my art even though drawing and painting isn't my strong suit.
Some names I can remember:
Mike from Unit A - thank you for supporting me through the worst of it all, I don't remember much from my first week but I remember your face and your name and I remember you letting me "do mud."
LeAnn - thank you for supporting me and for giving me reminders to look beyond myself and my community when I was so worried about myself and people I know personally.
Jean Claude - thank you for encouraging my academic side and taking interest in my love for languages. I am still learning Dutch and I have started learning Spanish - I have yet to learn French but that day will come.
Garn - we didn't interact a lot but my mom let me know when I got out how you kept her updated and I really appreciated the interactions we did have.
Music therapist - I don't remember your name but thank you for letting me sing and for telling me about your instruments.
Everyone - I remember you. I may not remember all of your names but I remember you. Thank you. You guys saved my life. I am sorry for how I acted. Thank you for helping me during the scariest time of my life. You guys helped me change myself for the better.
Much love!

I personally had a great experience. I was seeing Amber Myers. My first visit was uncertainty; I didn’t have any idea if this woman could provide the care I needed. Then a year later, I learned quite a bit about myself. Amber, pays attention to her patients. She actively listens. Instead of making suggestions, she allows her patients to self-reflect by using questions that make you think, rather than enforcing an idea. Sort of like planting a seed. Despite my care with physiatrist, over at Avera behavioral healths main facility, I actually got results. I improved through therapeutic techniques, rather than consuming medication. I can say that the practice at Avera behavioral health psychiatry is taboo. One little statement could cost you a prescription that you actually need and lead to you being misdiagnosed for something else. This happened to me. One doctor by the name of Losee, said to me, “My husband has adhd and he doesn’t need medication. So why do you?” This baffled me for the longest time. I was taken off my prescription for adhd, because I made a subtle statement about being angry at how my life was unfolding, about two years ago. She kept telling me if I went to get labs done (blood testing) she would provide my medication again. It never happened. So I gave up and went over to Avera behavioral healths smaller clinic, where they had licensed therapists such as Amber. And I was happy.
