Chief medical Charles Tilly is my doctor who prescribes most of my medications. I went their in 2019 after going to a facility in 2019 and when I got back home I was still seeing him. But when I went to spirit lakes facility for plains area... it was horrible. But we ain't talking about plains area spirit lake we talking about le Mars iowa plains area. Anyways... my doctor before I went to Charles tilly I was basically I was put on a good amount of medications and it was awful x.x but until I saw Charles tilly, he said to me that my main goal is to put you on less medications as possible. Also with my last recent visit via zoom, he said that he knows I don't do well in hospitals and he just wants me to stay right where I am. That's with my good mother. Plus he knows alot about natives. (I don't know how though) But when I get so nervous before an appointment with him, and when the appointment comes he talks in a very calming way and for some reason I can open up to him and I'm super calm. Like being nervous to calm in an instant. I don't know how he does his magical powers but he does. To be honest... I think he has a gift spiritually. Also he's a really good doctor for medications. Also my therapist Angela Nilles is a cool beans therapist. I love her so much. ^-^

This review is going for the advocate who’s been very helpful to me in the past few weeks! Her name is Alicia Beltman. She deserves nothing but a big raise! She does so much more for her clients than any one else who works there realizes! When I was staying in a motel, she was checking on me daily making sure I was okay. She has provided me resources. She helped me fill out applications for housing programs and applications to get into my home. She does a lot more than she’s required to do. This woman deserves a raise and a promotion. She actually cares about her job and clients. If you are ever homeless and need to get back on your feet, I’d recommend talking to Alicia!! Thank you for everything you did Alicia!

The programming is second to none (with one exception) and the counseling staff are direct and honest. Do not expect anything to be sugar coated. You will not be treated with kid gloves, but you will be respected.
The facility, on the other hand, is a step away from being condemned. The heating system is in desperate need of repair and the maintenance staff is not qualified to do the work. They also have a huge problem with bed bugs.

As with most mental health facilities, some of the practitioners are cold and uncaring while others pour their hearts into their work. One significant pro is that the rooms are private. Just be aware that the staff will constantly be checking on you if you are in your room alone. Sometimes this disrupts sleep and they will not care about leaving your door open and the light shining in.
If you are coming here due to legal reasons or need to just escape the traumas of modern living, I do think that a few weeks stay has the potential to heal much.
Doing the 90 day program, though, of course, is labor intensive and exhausting.
The rules and regulations of the Eleva Care handbook are restrictive because they've had people violate minute rules and minutiae and get away with inappropriate behavior.
Overall, staff really helped me get my head on straight and I am very grateful to have gotten back in touch with my true self and connect with inner values that I hold.
If you're having severe and persistent mental illness, I do recommend this treatment facility. I found the experience of being here for a sustained length of time to be very humanizing.

Many of the people posting negative comments are not complaining about Avera, they are complaining about a particular doctor. The trick here, as it is in every clinic in the country, is getting a doctor (what we used to call a GP I guess) that's right for you. I have Dr. Lilgaroth, she is great, so I gave 5 stars. My wife has had bad experiences in the past with so many male drs (the old "you're a woman & I'm both a man AND a doctor, so I'm gonna ignore what you say") that she finally demanded a female doctor, and that happened to work out great for her. Gender may not have been the reason, she may just have got a great dr-- the important thing is, my wife was comfortable with her. When her female dr retired, she ended up with a male dr (Dr Gunderson, I believe?) and she says he is great. Ya just gotta shop around and get a doc that is a fit for you-- that is true of any clinic, not just Avera. But I've also had pretty much all positive experiences with other parts of the clinic-- reception, labs, nurses, Avera hospitals, even the money people. (Btw, I'm not a nice guy or a pollyanna; I am by nature an extremely demanding pain in the, uh, rear.)

I highly recommend if you are struggling with addiction to opiates/heroin. If you want to change your life around don't hesitate The doctor is amazing and listens. The Nurses are so sweet. I'm going to miss one of the Nurses it's her last day. Also the counselors are all great people. I enjoy going talking to my counselor.

I was treated for depression, PTSD, and alcoholism while I was at Avera Behavioral health. The staff were excellent for how understaffed they were. They tried to give patients equal attention as best they could however, there were some more acute patients that needed more attention. Being inside an "institution" is never fun however they tried their best. There is a gorgeous Koi pond area that you can walk around during spring and summer and a gym. Those are both scheduled things. The whole day is usually scheduled out with group therapy and individual sessions too

Good place to go. There is not a lot of support for recovery here but they try to help in your needs as much as they can.

I see Katie and I feel she was the perfect fit for me as she is very caring and understanding. I am very lucky to have her just in the short time I have been with her I am feeling better about me and she makes me want to be a better person she has made me like myself again. The staff was caring and understanding of my recovery. They helped me with getting to know my addiction and how to recognize the triggers. They also help with getting your life back in order...but you have to go with the HOPE of getting help.
