Erin Janson 3 days ago My dad underwent a transcatheter edge-to-edge repair (TEER) at the Palo Alto VA, and we could not be more grateful for the care we received. We came from out of town because he could not receive the care through our local VA, so we had to travel to this hospital for the care he needed, and we couldn’t be more happy with the care he received - across the board. From the moment we checked in at the Fisher House, we were met with kindness, warmth and incredible support. The staff made us feel welcome and gave me a comfortable place to stay during what was a stressful and emotional time. Having the Fisher House available to us made such a difference and we are incredibly thankful for everyone who makes that possible. Our experience at the Palo Alto VA was equally exceptional. From the attention in the weeks prior leading up to his procedure Donna on the Cardiology team kept us up to date and informed about everything. She is such a gift to the patients and their families. Then from check-in, to pre-op through the procedure and all the way to discharge, every person we encountered was professional, compassionate, patient and genuinely caring. We felt informed and supported throughout the entire process, and it meant so much to know that my dad was in such good hands. The Cardiology team there is top-notch and everyone made us feel comfortable every step of the way. A special thank-you to his nurses, Tricia, Emily and Ryan in the intermediate ICU unit. They were absolutely awesome! They were kind, attentive, reassuring and took such great care of my dad. Their compassion and the way they interacted with both him and myself meant more than they probably realize. My dad also had wonderful things to say about his anesthesiologist. Unfortunately, I am terrible with names and don't remember his name, but my dad specifically mentioned how much he liked him and how comfortable he made him feel. It is easy to focus on the medical procedure itself, but what made this experience so meaningful was the humanity behind the care. The doctors, nurses, staff and Fisher House team all made an incredibly difficult situation feel a little less frightening. We are deeply thankful to everyone who cared for my dad and supported our family. Your kindness made a lasting impression on us. Thank you for everything you do for veterans and their families. We will never forget the care and kindness we experienced at the Palo Alto VA and Fisher House. The Cardiology team there went above and beyond and we just are so very grateful. There would always be extra food. and they would ask us, anyone want this, they had coffee if I remember. We had to line up at the right by the windows on my floor and then door would be unlocked we'd go in and who was the old guy the wheelchair. He was awrsome. Was it Dave ? Anyway,and milk the desk always had milk stashed back there. The tv was great I think we watched football and stuff. Yeah,and the evening snacks! They had a garden with planted something. My son got his tonsils removed and the process from intake to getting into his room was smooth. They were running late but they made sure to inform you how long they were running behind. Once my son got into his room the nurse came in explaining everything and how the process went. Ordering my sons food was easy. They had a big variety to choose from. Truly amazing clinicians, evidence based curriculum (CBT, DBT, ACT), specialized process groups for LGBTQ and BIPOC populations, etc. What makes the difference at La Selva is the quality of the therapists and the extremely supportive milieu. Highly recommended, and they take Kaiser insurance as well as many others. They also have a residential option (you live at their house), as well as a supportive housing option (kind of like a halfway house). I am better, more regulated, than I was when I came in. Can't recommend them enough! Gabriel Green 3 months ago La Selva was a life-changing experience that I believe saved my life. I arrived at La Selva after spending over a month in the hospital, and I was somewhat resistant to treatment; agreeing to residential care was my only option to leave a psychiatric hold. After arriving at La Selva, I was pleasantly surprised by the freedom I had and how my perspective changed. The Forest Ave house became a home for me, and I appreciated the opportunity to do little chores like cooking with other residents. Contrary to what I expected from a partial-hospitalization, the program offered daily group outings to get boba or walk outside and weekend trips like hikes. This freedom and routine helped me look forward to my days. The amazing residential staff, such as Letty and Alex, were often available to talk and offer support. I was also impressed with Dr. Wang's professionalism and effectiveness in finding medications that worked for me. He listened to my needs and changed my prescriptions to help me cope more easily. The new diagnoses I received helped me cope better with my symptoms. I appreciated the freedom to choose which sessions to attend and opt-out when the intensity became too much. I highly recommend Jurek's groups, especially family constellation, which helped me work through my issues. Meremy, my one-on-one therapist, was the most compassionate, supportive, and non-judgmental therapist I have ever worked with. She was there for me every week and more often when I was struggling with tough things. After a month of residential care, I moved on to supportive housing, where I lived without 24/7 staff support. My housemates and the staff Ligia and Simi made the transition relatively seamless. I even began working part-time on weekends, which had been impossible for me before. After spending several months at La Selva, I had attended nearly every class, created a Wellness Recovery Action Plan, found a new therapist and doctor, found employment, and found housing. After moving away, I have remained stable and am now employed full time. I continue to keep in touch with my friends and the staff at La Selva by attending the Friday meetings at Middlefield every so often. If you are in need of a program to help you after hospitalization, I highly recommend giving La Selva a try. I am confident that this program can help others in the same way it helped me. It’s a calm, supportive place where you can actually focus on getting better and figuring things out. What makes this place different is the staff. Every person I met has been through addiction themselves, so they truly get it. You’re not talking to people reading from a book. You’re talking to people who have lived it and come out the other side. That shows in the way they listen, the way they talk to you, and the patience and compassion they bring every day. The groups were helpful and real. People share honestly and support each other. The counselors and techs are down to earth and always willing to talk if you’re having a rough day. Many people came to check in on me and were receptive to all my questions and requests for help. Dr. Sangoi and the huge team of RNs/nurse assistants (including but not limited to Joy, Nick, Sophia, Raquel, and many more that I cannot recall the names of) were extremely helpful and kind. Once medically stable in the hospital, he was discharged to Mission Oaks for therapy with the goal to get his independence back in his home. There are 15 beds in the unit. Consider yourself very fortunate if you or your loved one gets admitted. This facility is top notch. The staff here are professional, caring, hardworking, and exceptional at what they do. The vast majority have been here for many, many years. It's not a revolving door. They are proud of what they have created. It's the culture here. Relearning to walk (PT), grab a cup (OT), or swallow for that matter (Speech Therapy), doesn't just happen. It requires hard work by both the patient and the staff. Nurses at Good Samaritan Hospital call this place "Boot Camp". From what I have learned, rehab is most effective when started soon after a stroke. Because of this, the therapists push to get the most out of the patients when they are here. I wish I could name everyone who has helped us. It would be the entire staff. I started noting individual names, but after I hit the 20 mark, I figured I would miss someone who definitely deserved credit. Expect several hours of various types of therapy per day. Filling in the gaps are a dedicated team of nurses that make sure your loved one vitals are tracked and correct medicine administered. The nurses all are friendly and care about you or your loved one. My father at 78 years of age came here unable to walk on his own or use his left hand. Two weeks later, he's walking and using his hand. He now has the ability and confidence to get back to living a life of independence. He will have some care initially, but the goal is to minimize the amount of care he gets over time. They have a care coordinator and social worker here on the floor that will actively work out a plan for you and/or loved one. I have heard horror stories about other facilities in the area. J Ballard 2 months ago So, I just left Palm treatment/detox center and wanted to leave a review while it’s fresh in my mind. To begin, when I was first getting checked in, a girl was on her way out literally crying with gratitude for how much this place saved her life. You could tell how genuine and appreciative she was. Super heart warming, so that was a good start. Pros to going to Palm Ave: -The staff is great, they genuinely care and all are in recovery themselves so they’re very empathetic. -It’s small, so if you’re someone who is anxious or nervous, don’t be. If I had to guess I’d say they can only hold up to about 15-20 at most and that’s a huge positive when you’re not at your best at don’t want to be around a hundred other people. -Food was very clean, healthy, and always available. -Meds are all taken care of for you, they’ll even pick up your prescriptions and make sure you get them on time, even if you’re asleep, they’re on top of it. -There’s really only one mandatory meeting (NA/AA) but several groups which are optional that I found really helpful and well led. -They don’t press you on where or when you need to be somewhere like other treatment centers do. If you need to sleep- you can sleep. Special shout out to Christian (who helped with meds, he always has good music playing and just a very positive vibe). Also, Tree. I spent ten minutes talking to this man and gained more perspective than I have in probably the last three years. Heather also, very chill and easy to talk to. These people really care. They’ve completely turned their lives around and some have come from really difficult pasts. It’s inspiring to hear their stories. Not to turn this into a novel but I’m just really stoked places like this exist- and free no less with medi-cal. To finish, if you’re struggling at all, just go for a few days. This place feels very homey, but at the same time it’s definitely high-end and has a lot of amenities that I don’t think you’d find at many other inpatient rehabs, like a theater room, jacuzzi, gym, resources, beautiful rooms. It’s also really beautiful and peaceful here, which has helped a lot during this process. The group therapy sessions are very intimate, and the people in group are genuinely non-judgmental. I work with Kristine, who has been amazing. Just graduated IOP and i feel confident with getting out there and working on my sobriety personally. Dr. Smeester (“Dan”) is great. He has a very warm and gentle presence, and it’s clear that he really cares about helping people who are struggling with addiction. He doesn’t judge. he listens carefully and accommodates any extra need you need. I had a great experience, and learned a lot. They provide aftercare for all graduates no matter when they graduated. I personally continue to attend aftercare every Wednesday, free of charge. He never rushes you he genuinely wants to listen and work with me to help give me quality of life♥️ Chronic pain is no joke. I’ve been in pain management since 2011. I had been with his wife Dr Gutierrez for years (she is also the best and a amazing Dr!! I began working with Dr Smeester and have been with him for a few years now. You will never find a Dr like Dr Smeester he is 1 in a million!! He is caring he works with you to give you the best outcome. I can’t imagine my life without his care. If you truly want great care then you’ve come to the right place!! Summer is his assistant she is the sweetest young lady who runs the office!!
