My therapist is great. Also my Psychiatrist was amazing too (Dr.Sonato). However he got done on the 7th of April this year. I was supposed to have an appointment with the nurse Monday of this week to get refills on my scripts. They called me SAME DAY to cancel on me and reschedule because apparently my nurse was having to take another nurse s appointments since she s out?? But I already had an appointment and you waited to tell me same day?? Then, someone from the medication line called me Monday after they cancelled and rescheduled my appointment to tell me that I needed to call the script line every month 5 days before I run out to get a refill. But she said Monday that she would refill them for me on Thursday. Thursday came along, I called the med line for good measure but couldn t leave a message because the mail box was FULL so I called again and spoke to someone at the front desk who ASSURED me that her or the med lady would call me back that day. Nobody contacted me. So I called again yesterday (Friday) once at 9am to leave a message on the med line(it finally wasn t full this time) and waited until about 2pm without hearing anything which prompted me to call AGAIN. This time I spoke to someone at the front desk who told me Shawna (the med lady) was working on my refill order at that moment. This whole time I was checking my CVS app to see if anything was filled and nothing was. Then 4pm rolls around (they close at 5pm and NOBODY is there on weekends for anything) and at 4:20 after being an hold for like 15 minutes, they said it was just awaiting doctor signature and PROMISED me it would be done before they closed at 5pm and told me their was no point in me calling a fourth time as I wouldn t have anything to worry about. Well now it s Saturday, I am taking my last meds today, and I won t even be able to speak to someone again until Monday when they open back up. I am bipolar and have adhd. Nice to know that my mental health means nothing yet they have no problem asking me when I m making my next payment. Absolutely RIDICULOUS!!

I started treatment in Dec. 2024. Four weeks ago during my session my therapist informed me she was opening her own practice and would not accept my insurance. I had to ask how I was going to be treated moving forward. She had no answer as to who I would be seeing, plus there was the possibility there would be no therapists at the Hartzog location! After calling repeatedly for the last 3.5 weeks (now going on 4) and asking finally for the supervisor...I'm still waiting on a call back from the therapist I'm supposed to be transferred to. I'm told every time I call "that the therapist schedules their own appointments and have been sent an email regarding your concerns". Total lack of professionalism and patient concerns. I do not recommend.

Accepted Insurance

Aiken – Barnwell Mental Health Center works with several private insurance providers and also accepts private payments when possible, please contact to verify your specific insurance provider.

Other Forms of Payment

Medicaid is a state based program that helps lower-income individuals and families pay for healthcare. Medicaid covers addiction treatment so those enrolled can use their coverage to pay for rehab. When a program accepts Medicaid the client often pays very little or nothing out of their own pocket.

Private insurance refers to any kind of healthcare coverage that isn't from the state or federal government. This includes individual and family plans offered by an employer or purchased from the Insurance Marketplace. Every plan will have different requirements and out of pocket costs so be sure to get the full details before you start treatment.

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Medicare is a federal program that provides health insurance for those 65 and older. It also serves people under 65 with chronic and disabling health challenges. To use Medicare for addiction treatment you need to find a program that accepts Medicare and is in network with your plan. Out of pocket costs and preauthorization requirements vary, so always check with your provider.

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

outpatient iconOutpatient
Outpatient Programs (OP) are for those seeking mental rehab or drug rehab, but who also stay at home every night. The main difference between outpatient treatment (OP) and intensive outpatient treatment (IOP) lies in the amount of hours the patient spends at the facility. Most of the time an outpatient program is designed for someone who has completed an inpatient stay and is looking to continue their growth in recovery. Outpatient is not meant to be the starting point, it is commonly referred to as aftercare.

Treatments

Many of those suffering from addiction also suffer from mental or emotional illnesses like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, or anxiety disorders. Rehab and other substance abuse facilities treating those with a dual diagnosis or co-occurring disorder administer psychiatric treatment to address the person's mental health issue in addition to drug and alcohol rehabilitation.

Mental health rehabs focus on helping individuals recover from mental illnesses like bipolar disorder, clinical depression, anxiety disorders, schizophrenia, and more. Mental health professionals at these facilities are trained to understand and treat mental health issues, both in individual and group settings.

Programs

adult-program thumbnail image
Adult Program
Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.
young-adult-program thumbnail image
Young Adult Program
Young adulthood can be an exciting, yet difficult, time of transition. Individuals in their late teens to mid-20s face unique stressors related to school, jobs, families, and social circles, which can lead to a rise in substance use. Rehab centers with dedicated young adult programs will include activities and amenities that cater to this age group, with an emphasis on specialized counseling, peer socialization, and ongoing aftercare.

Clinical Services

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a therapy modality that focuses on the relationship between one's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It is used to establish and allow for healthy responses to thoughts and feelings (instead of unhealthy responses, like using drugs or alcohol). CBT has been proven effective for recovering addicts of all kinds, and is used to strengthen a patient's own self-awareness and ability to self-regulate. CBT allows individuals to monitor their own emotional state, become more adept at communicating with others, and manage stress without needing to engage in substance abuse.

Whether a marriage or other committed relationship, an intimate partnership is one of the most important aspects of a person's life. Drug and alcohol addiction affects both members of a couple in deep and meaningful ways, as does rehab and recovery. Couples therapy and other couples-focused treatment programs are significant parts of exploring triggers of addiction, as well as learning how to build healthy patterns to support ongoing sobriety.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a modified form of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), a treatment designed to help people understand and ultimately affect the relationship between their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. DBT is often used for individuals who struggle with self-harm behaviors, such as self-mutilation (cutting) and suicidal thoughts, urges, or attempts. It has been proven clinically effective for those who struggle with out-of-control emotions and mental health illnesses like Borderline Personality Disorder.

Research clearly demonstrates that recovery is far more successful and sustainable when loved ones like family members participate in rehab and substance abuse treatment. Genetic factors may be at play when it comes to drug and alcohol addiction, as well as mental health issues. Family dynamics often play a critical role in addiction triggers, and if properly educated, family members can be a strong source of support when it comes to rehabilitation.

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

Trauma therapy addresses traumatic incidents from a client's past that are likely affecting their present-day experience. Trauma is often one of the primary triggers and potential causes of addiction, and can stem from child sexual abuse, domestic violence, having a parent with a mental illness, losing one or both parents at a young age, teenage or adult sexual assault, or any number of other factors. The purpose of trauma therapy is to allow a patient to process trauma and move through and past it, with the help of trained and compassionate mental health professionals.

Dr. Sanato is amazing he treats his patients fairly and listens to them the next part is not about him the only issues I. have with them is they grill me about why I use their services and not other services like repeatedly since December. Strangely, I have noticed someone either on hold or on the phone while in my sessions, I’m considering going elsewhere because I’m worried about my privacy.

Please front desk, just do better. Just be nice. That's it...even if you have to fake it like I do. The front desk I feel has become a huge problem and scary to me that I asked my therapist for telehealth appointments which they don't really do but in my case I'll have one telehealth appointment thanks to aylssa my therapist. Thank you sweetie. Nurse dawn and Alyssa are the only good ones there. Dr sinato is ok. It's sucks we all have to talk to him through a computer. Sometimes I hate technology. I just Wanna see you in person sinato. But anyway I'm doing everything I can to avoid the front desk including staying in my car. They just hurt you so much and they don't even know it. I had a front desk lady laugh at me because I said I still don't understand. It's heartbreaking to me. I wish they could be better people at this center. Please clean house but never ever take away dawn and alysssa. :)

I only go here bc I'm poor. My counselor is great, but Matthewson (psych) sucks. Careless and dismissive. I asked to change Drs and had to fill out a form explaining why. Said they'd be in touch within 6 weeks, nothing, and no one calls back about it.

I've been waiting for someone to pick up the phone for 2.5 hours to get my wife reestablished as a patient after she was erroneously discharged for the second time and without any notification to us. I think it's a good facility, but you should definitely go in person to get things done. And I can't do that as we are out of a car (the stress of which makes us need services more).

Only do telehealth. Somehow my brother's appointment got canceled today and no one seems to know how it happened.prior authorization on meds never got done , so refills are impossible to get. Pathetic excuse for a mental health facility!

I've been calling every day to get another refill. They never answer the damn phone. If my doctor ask why haven't been taking my meds I'm going to point him to my review.

Six months calling a Counselor by phone and NOT ONCE received a call back. If I was a client I would have had a breakdown.
