The staff was very nice but this facility isn’t for people who a truly struggling with addiction. The chef is extremely rude and cooks very exotic dishes that aren’t aimed for those who are detoxing or trying to get healthy again. The food regularly available is granola bars, ramen and potato chips. When I advocated for myself and asked to switch treatment centers they didn’t allow me to and then would monitor my phone time. I had to lie and say I was calling a family member and had to whisper on the phone. I do want to say that the techs truly do care about the wellbeing of the clients but their hands are tied and don’t have much room to help. The clients were mostly military and on punishment and it was a very rare caser to find someone deep in their addiction. I would highly recommend this being a last option.

Thank you for sharing your feedback. We’re glad to hear that you felt our technicians genuinely care about the well-being of clients.

We’re sorry that parts of your experience did not meet your expectations. While we are proud to support members of the military and veterans, our facility is not exclusively for military clients, and we serve individuals from many different backgrounds who are seeking help for addiction and mental health challenges. Our programs and policies including meal planning and phone usage are designed to support safety, structure, and recovery for all clients, but we understand that individual experiences can vary.

We take all feedback about the treatment experience seriously and are continuously working to improve our services. Please reach out to us directly at support@akuamindbody.com so a member of our team can speak with you.

The primary function of AKUA is to process military personnel who have been sentenced to complete a program as a part of their punishment for getting caught under the influence. Preferential treatment is applied to those in the military compared to civilians. If you are a civilian, this is not the place for you, and they make that crystal clear from the start. Any amount of honest will get you discharged, especially if your insurance covers a majority of your stay. I would recommend trying to get on Medí-Cal if that’s an option to get into a remotely decent program that won’t kick you out for not being military. This is a lock-down facility with little to no free time and no phone time to make plans for the future. There is little to no therapy, and a majority of your day is taken up by meaningless groups. Again, this is a military-only facility, and I can’t emphasize that enough. Civilians are not welcome.

My time at Akua Mind & Body in Mission Hills was honestly an amazing experience. What made it special for me were the people—my case manager Donna was incredible, always supportive and really made me feel understood, and Nurse Kim was just as great, checking in and making sure I was good every step of the way. On top of that, the chef’s cooking was seriously next level—meals were something I actually looked forward to every day. Overall, it felt like a place that truly cares about you, not just your treatment. I’m grateful for the experience and the people who made it what it was. Definitely reminded me of having a purpose.

Levels of Care

During the first phase of recovery – detox – it is crucial to have 24-hour clinical care in California. This care provides constant monitoring in order to ensure your safely and comfort as you progress through the withdrawal process for drug or alcohol addiction. Licensed professionals prescribe medications to treat withdrawal symptoms and provide frequent monitoring to ensure your safely as addictive toxins leave your system.

When addicted, quitting your drug of choice suddenly can be dangerous. That's why experts agree a medically assisted detox is the safest way to remove addictive substances from the body. Usually done in an inpatient setting, your vitals signs and overall well being are consistently monitored and rechecked in order to keep you safe and ensure the detox is successful.

Inpatient rehab provides intensive treatment for clients exiting detox, those in early recovery, and those at an elevated risk of relapse. Unlike outpatient drug rehab, clients receiving inpatient care reside at the facility for the duration of the program. The length of stay may range from two weeks to 18 months or more, depending on the client's needs and the program's design. Inpatient treatment typically involves extensive addiction education and recovery-focused life skills training.

Rehab aftercare programs offer clients in addiction recovery a robust continuum of care after clients have completed active treatment. These services address recovery as a life-long process and are designed to evolve with clients' changing needs. Clients may partner with their case managers and/or addiction recovery team to identify the rehab aftercare services that are right for them. They may receive career counseling, housing assistance, peer coaching, 12 step program induction, among many other services.

Treatments

Alcoholism, or alcohol use disorder (AUD), is defined by alcohol dependence. This is a state the body reaches when it experiences withdrawal symptoms in the absence of alcohol. A person who has AUD craves alcohol and continues to drink despite adverse consequences. Because withdrawing from alcohol can pose health risks, individuals with AUD should seek professional alcohol rehab in California to overcome their alcohol addiction. This process typically involves medical detox, rehabilitation, and maintenance.

Drug rehab in California teaches participants constructive ways to stay clean and sober. Treatment revolves around helping individuals stop using the substance they are addicted to and learn healthy habits to avoid relapse.

opium iconOpioid Addiction

In California, substance abuse treatment programs can help individuals with any type of substance use disorders and co-occurring conditions. These rehab programs typically encompass various levels of care, including medically assisted detox, intensive outpatient, outpatient, residential rehab, and partial hospitalization. You can expect clinicians to utilize evidence-based therapies like cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT), and mindfulness to help you achieve and sustain your recovery. The rehab's clinical team can provide a comprehensive assessment to determine the appropriate level of care and medical support you may need.

Programs

Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.

Recovery is most successful when clients feel accepted and validated by their peers and treatment providers. Facilities that offer LGBTQ-inclusive programming are committed to creating a safe space where everyone can grow and recover without fear of judgment or discrimination. Men face specific challenges and concerns when seeking addiction treatment. Gender-specific recovery programs help them tackle these issues head-on in an environment that's focused, targeted, and distraction-free. It also gives them the opportunity to connect with and learn from other men who have been through a similar journey and can offer support for the next step.

Rehabs for women provide a safe, nurturing space for female clients to heal. These treatment programs consider the specific obstacles that women can face during recovery and place a special emphasis on mental, social, physical, and reproductive health. They explore how each woman's experience has shaped the trajectory of their substance use, addressing issues such as sexual abuse and past trauma.

Young adulthood can be an exciting, yet difficult, time of transition. Individuals in their late teens to mid-20s face unique stressors related to school, jobs, families, and social circles, which can lead to a rise in substance use. Rehab centers with dedicated young adult programs will include activities and amenities that cater to this age group, with an emphasis on specialized counseling, peer socialization, and ongoing aftercare.

Clinical Services

The goal of creative arts therapy in California is to encourage growth and transformation. It can be used in individual and group settings with both children and adults. Options include movement, music, and painting.

Family therapy offers a platform for members to have an open dialogue about the challenges that addiction has placed on the family unit. Through guided sessions, therapists can help families develop healthy communication skills and address unresolved issues. By working together toward a common goal, they help to support their loved one's sobriety.

During group therapy, men and women learn to express their emotions openly in a non judgmental setting. This helps you process your feelings and reduces feelings of social isolation that are often associated with addiction.

While in rehab treatment, you may work on developing various life skills to help you in long term recovery. These may include resilience, interpersonal skills, and self awareness. The focus will be on developing healthy habits for self care and relationships so you have the skills you need to manage day to day life.

After 16 years in the military, multiple deployments, underways, time away from my family, losing myself, who I was, and my professional and personal life was falling apart. I self referred myself to Balboa Hospital. Thankfully, after a detox in the hospital, I was welcomed to AKUA for a 28 day residential treatment. Words cannot describe how thankful I am to all the staff, Chef Becca, the AKUA family members I made there and the tools they gave me to be vulnerable, use cognitive reframing, give myself grace, not live in resentment and to live “Just For Today” and “One Day at a Time”. They offer Yoga, Art Therapy, Music Therapy, multiple group therapies and gym almost everyday. During the weekend, we got to go out and enjoy parts of San Diego and various AA/NA meetings. Without a doubt, the greatest place you could go to start your recovery process!

Response from the owner
Thank you so much for sharing your story with us. Your strength, resilience, and willingness to seek help after everything you’ve been through is truly inspiring.

We’re incredibly honored to have been a part of your recovery journey and to hear that the program, community, and therapeutic tools made a meaningful impact. It means a lot to our entire San Diego team—including Chef Becca and everyone involved—that you felt supported, welcomed, and empowered during your time with us.

Your words about vulnerability, growth, and taking things “one day at a time” are exactly what recovery is all about, and we’re so glad those principles continue to stay with you.

You’ll always be a part of the AKUA family 💙
