Mayo Clinic helped me save my life! The day leading up to my admittance to the psych unit was an intense one. I had stopped using Meth, Alcohol, Marijuana and nicotine the day before after my now-ex had beaten me. I woke up that morning and went to hang out with my friend. We grabbed coffee, ate, hung out at her shop, and we enjoyed several hours just spending time together.I knew that at some point that I had to go back to my captor. I had nowhere else to go, I was on drugs, and my friends didn't help me try to find something else to do. It was a day, much like the last 7 months. My captor called me telling me that he was grabbing my laundry and if I would go grab it with him. I reluctantly said yes, and my friend dropped me off at his venue. I waited for him, just hoping that I could have a nap (after being screamed at the entire night before), but he showed up early. We went to the laundromat, and I grabbed my laundry and threw it in the basket in the back of his truck, and I was yelled at the entire time. We went back to the venue because he had to go to the bathroom. I knew that this might be the only time that I could leave. I grabbed my jacket and my purse and left with the clothes on my back.I called the Suicide Hotline, and I called local hotels, and my friends. I asked them if I left tonight if they had a place for me to sleep. Everyone said no, except for my friend Asher, who said that I could check into an IRTZ facility that he was in.I walked around Mankato all that day until then with everyone asking me if I was okay. I kept lying, I didn't know what to do, and I was so broken. I was exhausted and trying to sleep in bushes to finally get some rest. I ate at Nolabelle Kitchen and Bar, and finally went to the IRTZ Facility. My friend hung out with me until I could do an intake. I did the intake and sat. At midnight I got referred to the South Central Crisis Team, because I needed a higher level of care.I went to the South Central Crisis Center and did an intake there. I heard that a person before me got rejected because they were full. I cut myself, because I wasn't sure if they would take me seriously. I didn't want to go back to where I was. In the end they brought me to Mayo Clinic's Emergency Room, and were in the process of finding me a psychiatric unit to go to. I made up a story, so my ex wouldn't go searching for me everywhere and bring me back to his place.I lied and said that my parents reported me for doing drugs, and that I was in the Albert Lea Psych Unit, because they were the only one with beds open, and my parents requested that I be institutionalized. It was a lie to buy myself time, and space away for him that seemed compliant yet fit within a realm of believability. The next day I was admitted to the Mankato Psych Unit. I told my captor, because I still wasn't sure of what to do, or how I would escape. I figured that this would placate him, so I had more time. An "involuntary 72 hour hold" turned into a 10 day stay. He would walk into the psych unit every day with work papers for me to work on while I was there, and threaten the nurses in charge that he was going to break me out.I'm so grateful for the daily scheduled activities. I appreciate the community of people that were there during my time. The staff was mostly helpful, I wish that I had been able to attend my online meditation group. My spirituality is of great comfort to me and that would have really helped. My doctors kept asking me about going to an inpatient facility for my drug use. I kept thinking to myself that I didn't have a drug problem and that I had finally used drugs right, and I thought that up until the last day before I left.I was handed a stack of inpatient papers about each facility. Pride was of course first on the list, but it was two weeks to just get a phone interview. The second most appealing inpatient was Latitudes. I left for Latitudes the next day. Thank you Mayo for helping me save my life. In three days I will have nine months clean and living my best life in Minneapolis!!!

I have had nothing but good experiences here. Some of the doctors are rude and seem uncaring tho. I had a colonoscopy and upper endoscopy done. Was barely sedated and awake through the entire thing. It was traumatizing. They didnt listen to me when I said it hurt. They treated me like I did something wrong. This was the 10th time ive had this done and only one other time did I have such an awful experience and it was when I, just like this time, told the doctors that the medication they were giving me would not work with me. They did not listen. I know what does and does not work for me. This was their first time encountering me for one of these there and they should of listened to me and also checked my past medical records from other hospitals. What I think it was is the fact I am a recovering addict who has been clean since 2017, but once you get that term..addict.. on your records... doesnt matter how much clean time you have... you will ALWAYS be treated like an addict and less than human. The hospital itself is great, I should clarify it was the doctor from McFarland medical clinic, the GI guy... Larry Johnston, who I blame for all of this. Dont go see him if you dont want to be traumatized from something that should be simple. He even gives an abnormal prep. Will never go back and will do everything I can to inform people to not go to him.
