My son spent a year and three months at Spruce Mountain Inn, and I have nothing to say but positive things about it. The entire experience was, for us, a miracle. We had tried everything to treat his bipolar disorder, and I was desperate. In my search for a program that would help my son, Spruce stood out because it was a smaller program for people aged 18-28 that had been started in the 1980s and directed to the present day by the same incredible woman, and it seemed a good fit for my son. Surprisingly, it was also one of the least expensive as well. As a physician, I looked into SMI’s credentials and its personnel qualifications closely and was satisfied even before my son went there, and I was not disappointed. My son went from a severely depressed and sometimes suicidal individual who had no social interaction, was unable to keep a job, and basically felt hopeless about his life, to a confident, compassionate, outgoing, hardworking, and happy person. With the right medication (finally!) and the in-depth and insightful therapy he underwent, plus the love and care the staff at Spruce gave him, my son is now the person he was always meant to be without the bipolar disorder in charge of his brain. He is now able to live independently with a job and his own apartment, and manages his whole life with only the care and support any parents would give a child of 22. Spruce Mountain Inn literally changed his whole life, and because of that, ours as well. As a physician, I could not be more impressed with the amazing turnaround his time at Spruce made possible for him. As a parent, I could not be more grateful to them for giving him the chance to have a life. Without Spruce Mountain Inn, my son would still be a severely depressed individual completely dependent on his parents with no prospects and no hope of having a normal life. With Spruce Mountain Inn, my son now has a bright and happy future ahead of him. We will always be incredibly thankful to them for their help; it was literally a life-saver.
Update 5 years later:
My son is now 27 and an area manager for a large inventory company in Michigan. He has been doing fantastically well, able to weather the ups and downs of life thanks to the skills he learned at Spruce. At this point his bipolar disorder, while on medication and in counseling as needed, has only a small effect on his daily life. He is a happy, healthy and social person with a full life and an upwardly mobile job. Thank you again, Spruce Mountain!

I highly recommend Spruce for any young adult experiencing deep, unrelenting depression, as was our son. He went on his own volition, after years of trying everything else, at the recommendation of a local psychiatrist. And he dove into the program there. Everything about Spruce is intentional and thoughtful - the setting, the counselors, the program, interactions with the outside world and other residents. Our son's therapist was a perfect match for him, and us. He met people there who changed his life and with whom he is still in touch, and he began the process of becoming the adult he was meant to be. We scoffed at the idea that he would be there longer than a month or two, but his stay of seven months was perfect, and he left armed with life tools that are serving him well. As his therapist said, "He got a Ph.D. in himself!" We will be forever grateful to Spruce.

Averte clinical staff are kind, compassionate and responsive. They truly care about the people in need of their services as well as their family members. As soon as I reached out for help, Steve called me within an hour and then was planning a visit within days to assess the situation (which was a 2.5+ hour drive). The team wraps their services around the person in need until they are stable. Amy, the Clinical Program Coordinator even took time from her vacation to talk to me prior to my family members discharge. That kind of support is invaluable during a time of crisis stabilization and the level of support is reassuring for everyone involved. One should never hesitate to reach out for help and if you are lucky, the help will come from Averte.

Maple Leaf Farms has been the ONLY rehab facility I've been in that I can't speak highly enough about!! The staff is so caring and genuinely is concerned about each patient and their individual needs. I made the decision to commit myself to their care in the winter or 2005. I'd been through the gambit of these types of facilities more times than i can remember, I didn't hold great expectations as i wasn't fully certain that they could tell me something I didn't already know or hadn't already heard. i was from Connecticut, released from Niantic womans' prison into the custody of a family member, who lived in Vermont. I wasn't remanded to complete a rehab. but in order to start to get my teenage daughter back in my life I agreed to do what they wanted. I never experienced such a verity of approaches to ease the discomfort of withdrawing from these hideous drugs! I was blown away that the curriculum my counselor had designed for me was working. Mostly in that I had fun going about my day with the other patients, people that where "like me" and we picked each other up off the floor when things got hard. Because if You don't find yourself experiencing uncomfortable feelings then you should take a better look at the facility your in!! It takes work , and Maplel Leaf made sure that when we worked hard we relaxed hard too!! Hands down BEST FACILITY YOU COULD EVER BE BLESSED ENOUGH TO BE IN!!! P.S. Home Intervention, or HI, is a part of Washington County Mental Health. It is a place where someone who is in a state of crisis Mentally or Emotionally. An alternative to the Inpatient Psychiatry Unit, it is a bit more of a relaxed atmosphere than one would experience in the Inpatient Unit. Patients are, however, still under careful supervision, but it is designed to be for those who are in a state of crisis, but not as much of a danger to themselves or others and thus requiring slightly less supervision than someone in the hospital. I spent about a week and a half there and was very pleasantly surprised. The staff were very professional and very helpful. They were also pleasant and truly friendly, not just "nice" because they are supposed to be. I would absolutely recommend this to anyone who is having a difficult time, as everyone does at some points in their lives.

In researching the program, Shannon from Admissions connected us with 3 families who had recently had children at Summit and worked with the same therapist we had been matched with. All 3 families quickly reached back out to share their experiences. We appreciated that Summit was able to provide adventure therapy while helping our child not only maintain her progress in school but also obtain additional high school credits. Our primary therapist Olivia was both highly skilled and professional. Winter expeditions were well planned, safe, and very beneficial. The students were provided top of the line gear and the field staff were excellent. The family support program at Summit is exceptional and utilizes the Parallel Process curriculum. The therapists, field guides, parent coach, academic staff and medical practitioners truly work as a multi-disciplinary team and the outcome data speaks to how effective this program is. My son, who quite honestly did not want to go to Summit at first, speaks so fondly of his time there. He always emphasizes how kind the staff is - the therapists, the teachers, and the guides. The weekly expectations for kids to reach therapeutic, academic, and expedition goals is a holistic approach and allows those who struggle in certain areas to shine in others. My son says the expeditions were fun, purposeful, and challenging. He began to feel confident again and his self-esteem was boosted. On the last day when his peers gathered in a circle and shared loving words about my son, it was incredibly moving. Here was a group of teens, all of them struggling in their own right, sharing such profound sentiments. I wish all teens have the opportunity to become such supportive peers and so emotionally literate.

Sending our son away from home when he was completely “stuck” in life with his anxiety etc, was one of the hardest things we ever had to do, and the hardest thing he ever had to do. Thankfully we put our full trust in Summit Achievement with Mike, Nick and so many of the guides and staff who made it the tremendously life changing experience it was for our son. He has grown into an amazing young man who is about to graduate college. He has learned to navigate life when it becomes difficult, so that he can move forward in a stronger and more confident way. My husband and I too learned so much about our role as his parents and ways to support him. Over the years he has even spoken about some of the tools he learned at Summit and how it changed his life. Sometimes it can be with humor when he is quoting something he learned at Summit but always with thankfulness as he has literally said as hard as it was that “Summit saved him”. We are ever so grateful for his experience there and the unbelievably dedicated staff the makes Summit what it is. Anne M

Mountain Valley truly changed my life forever. I came to them overcome with anxiety and hopelessness that made life feel impossible and worthless. The bubbly and sweet girl I once was completely hidden by my mental illness. But Mountain Valley brought that happy and optimistic side of me back, and gave me so many more invaluable gifts and insights. At Mountain Valley, I learned so much, including skills to help me manage my intense mood fluctuations, insights about common patterns in my anxiety, how to tackle my fear head on and even see it as a tool rather than a weakness, and I learned when and how to properly reach out for help when I needed it. But more than anything, at Mountain Valley I learned what it truly meant to be loved. You will never find a place as loving as MV. From the supportive and enthusiastic staff to the other residents who I now call some of my best friends, everyone in the community truly cares so much for one another and wants to see each other succeed. Surrounded by so much care and affection, I learned how to love myself and be optimistic about my life once again. Even being almost 2 years post grad from Mountain Valley, I still feel constantly supported by the MV community and I know I always have a home in beautiful Plainfield, NH. If you or your loved one is considering Mountain Valley, I truly could not recommend it more!!!

MV was the first treatment center I ever attended. I was terrified going in—I had never been away from home, and I was struggling deeply with depression, OCD, and anxiety. I had graduated from high school in 2023, taken a gap year, and was preparing to start at Franklin & Marshall College when I hit my rock bottom. Together, my parents and I made the difficult decision that I needed more intensive support. Looking back now, those five months at MV became the most transformative period of my life.
I met incredible people—both residents and staff—who made me feel seen, understood, and supported. During my time at MV, I was able to heal and reconnect with the core of my values. Of course, there were moments when I felt frustrated with the program; treatment is a vulnerable space that asks you to confront your fears, your patterns, and the safety behaviors that have led your life. But MV offered me the safety, structure, and guidance I needed to work through that discomfort. They gave me the push no one else could. MV helped me to realize just how much I needed consistency, caring accountability, and firm but compassionate support.
Today, my OCD is so much better, and although my anxiety is still around (it’s always going to be a pesky little friend), I’ve learned how to work with it instead of letting it control me. I’m currently living in Portland, ME, in a transitional living program where I’m taking classes at SMCC, working at Anthropologie, and learning how to support myself. To see the progress from a year ago—when I couldn’t even leave my room—to where I am now is incredibly empowering. And best of all, I've realized that the strength I needed was already within me; I just needed some help remembering that it was there. None of this would have been possible without the foundation MV helped me build. I am forever grateful to everyone there. It genuinely changed my life.
P.S. Here’s a photo of me at the peak of Mt. Moosilauke—best hike ever!
