About Brookhaven Retreat

Landmark Recovery is an alcohol and drug rehab center in Seymour, Tennessee. They’re located a little over 20 minutes away from Knoxville. They provide medical detox, inpatient treatment, and outpatient services. They accept private payments, commercial insurance, Medicaid, and TriWest. If you need help paying for their services, they’ll help you set up a payment plan.

Detoxing by yourself can be a very painful and dangerous experience. It’s important to perform this step with supervision. Their inpatient medical detox program helps you slowly wean off drugs in a safe, supervised manner. The whole process usually takes around five to seven days. When you’re finished, you can move into inpatient care.

The inpatient program lasts around 30 days and starts with a thorough assessment. Something I like about this facility is that they’ll make sure your treatment plan aligns with your personal beliefs. They also you want you to help select the type of recovery approach you use. The options they offer include the 12 step model, SMART Recovery, and holistic options like yoga.

In both inpatient and outpatient care, you can also attend individual and group counseling sessions. This gives you time to talk about your addictions, address issues you’re working through, and learn from others.

One individual who’s been through this program said that the staff members go above and beyond to make sure everyone thrives in recovery. Another remarked that the facility changed their life and gave them hope for the future.

I went to Brookhaven when I was 21 years old, I m 28 in May of this year. My mom sent me because I was depressed and had recently gone through a traumatic experience that had left me feeling disassociated and alone. I was using cannabis heavily to cope. I was sent to the facility for help. I did not find help. Instead I found more trauma (trauma that to this day haunts me to the point where I feel like I can t breath). The facility promotes an ability to take care of their clients with mental health issues, that they are a completely capable facility where you will be nurtured and cared for. It s not. I had a panic attack while there and took my shoes off to ground and connect to the earth, I remember feeling like I was suffocating. I panicked and took a few steps off the property (at most 3). I remembered instantly that I was told not to step off the property and turned around and came back to the front door. Two people who work there sat me down and talked to me making me feel safe and like it was going to be okay. That s when the police car pulled up. I remember feeling betrayed, my trust had been broken. The police officer hand cuffed me and drove me to the psych ward (I had never been in a psych ward before at this time). I cried and slept, feeling ashamed, worthless and betrayed. I was then transferred to what I call the big house (a mental hospital in the area). I was forced to stay in this mental hospital for 10 days. I believe I was forced to stay in the big house for such a long time because I asked if there was an alternative to medications and stated I didn t want to take medication. I didn t want to take medication as to the fact that I have a strong belief system against forced administration of pharmaceuticals. Long story short I was punished for my beliefs and willingness to talk out against the doctors. In there they watched me in the shower, held me down and gave me a sedative, and treated me like I didn t had a soul. What was left of my innocence was extinguished. I returned to Brookhaven. At one point one of the facility workers tried to make nice and present like she cared. The trust had been broken, I had been broken. Like a horse who has had its spirit broken I was a shadow of who I once was. I left Brookhaven two or three weeks later, I honestly don t remember how long it was I just remember being afraid of everyone and petrified they d send me back. I now have a very difficult time trusting any mental health care provider. I still have flashbacks and anxiety attacks from that time in my life. I went home broken. Don t send your daughter, mother, sister, wife to this facility, it is not a retreat.P.S. it took me so long to write this review because I had heard the facility was shut down and my first thought when I heard that was good, no more women can be hurt at their hand. Do NOT trust this facility!!!If you want to get clean/sober join a 12 step recovery program. The people in NA/AA will actually love you until you learn to love yourself. It may take time for it to stick but if you don t give up on yourself miracles can and will happen.

Worst experience of my life, first off I was lied to on the phone by then saying I would be well taken care of. Then when I got there everything they said was a lie. Told me I would have my own room with a tv and would be medically assisted. Lie from the the start they could be a torture facility. Then when i wanted to leave they wouldn't even let me charge my phone so I could get any sort of ride. They told me the nearest vape shop was 1.5 miles in that direction. If not for the help of a total stranger picking me up from the side of the road I'm 100% positive I would have died on the side of the road to which they didn't care at all what experience of my life I would never go there if you want to be clean. And actually have someone help you be clean c complete and udder disgrace to the medical community.

Brookhaven was absolutely wonderful. The staff is very kind and professional, the therapy is extremely helpful, and I found it really helped me find balance and creativity in a busy life. I especially loved the fashion sense of the staff, specifically that of Jordan, Jennie and Lana ;) Pictures attached are paintings created at Brookhaven.

Other Forms of Payment

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

inpatient iconInpatient
Residential treatment programs are those that offer housing and meals in addition to substance abuse treatment. Rehab facilities that offer residential treatment allow patients to focus solely on recovery, in an environment totally separate from their lives. Some rehab centers specialize in short-term residential treatment (a few days to a week or two), while others solely provide treatment on a long-term basis (several weeks to months). Some offer both, and tailor treatment to the patient's individual requirements.
24-hour icon24-Hour Clinical Care
Safe detox requires 24-hour clinical care in Tennessee. This is due to the health risks that are involved during withdrawal. As the brain reacts to the absence of the drug, severe symptoms can occur, depending on the type of drug used. For instance, alcohol and benzodiazepine withdrawal may result in seizures. Fortunately, supervised care in a clinical setting can provide the necessary treatment to avoid health risks and allow you to complete detox safely.
medically-assisted-detox iconMedically Assisted Detox
To keep you safe and comfortable during the detoxification process, a medically assisted detox provides you with a team of medical professionals who can provide the necessary medications to treat any potential withdrawal symptoms. Suddenly stopping chronic abuse of substances like alcohol, benzodiazepines, or opioids can have uncomfortable and even dangerous side effects.

Treatments

The goal of treatment for alcoholism is abstinence. Those with poor social support, poor motivation, or psychiatric disorders tend to relapse within a few years of treatment. For these people, success is measured by longer periods of abstinence, reduced use of alcohol, better health, and improved social functioning. Recovery and Maintenance are usually based on 12 step programs and AA meetings.

When your day-to-day life is taken over by drug use, this is known as substance use disorder. If you abruptly stop using your drug of choice, you experience withdrawal symptoms. To overcome this cycle, professional drug rehab in Tennessee is usually needed.

Many of those suffering from addiction also suffer from mental or emotional illnesses like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, or anxiety disorders. Rehab and other substance abuse facilities treating those with a dual diagnosis or co-occurring disorder administer psychiatric treatment to address the person's mental health issue in addition to drug and alcohol rehabilitation.

A combined mental health and substance abuse rehab has the staff and resources available to handle individuals with both mental health and substance abuse issues. It can be challenging to determine where a specific symptom stems from (a mental health issue or an issue related to substance abuse), so mental health and substance abuse professionals are helpful in detangling symptoms and keeping treatment on track.

Opioid rehabs specialize in supporting those recovering from opioid addiction. They treat those suffering from addiction to illegal opioids like heroin, as well as prescription drugs like oxycodone. These centers typically combine both physical as well as mental and emotional support to help stop addiction. Physical support often includes medical detox and subsequent medical support (including medication), and mental support includes in-depth therapy to address the underlying causes of addiction.

Programs

adult-program thumbnail image
Adult Program
Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.
military-program thumbnail image
Military Program
Serving in the military is both mentally and physically challenging, and can result in trauma that persists even after combat ends. Military programs are tailored to the specific and often complex needs of active duty personnel, veterans, and military families. Clients often access these programs through the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA).

Clinical Services

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a therapy modality that focuses on the relationship between one's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It is used to establish and allow for healthy responses to thoughts and feelings (instead of unhealthy responses, like using drugs or alcohol). CBT has been proven effective for recovering addicts of all kinds, and is used to strengthen a patient's own self-awareness and ability to self-regulate. CBT allows individuals to monitor their own emotional state, become more adept at communicating with others, and manage stress without needing to engage in substance abuse.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a modified form of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), a treatment designed to help people understand and ultimately affect the relationship between their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. DBT is often used for individuals who struggle with self-harm behaviors, such as self-mutilation (cutting) and suicidal thoughts, urges, or attempts. It has been proven clinically effective for those who struggle with out-of-control emotions and mental health illnesses like Borderline Personality Disorder.

Equine therapy, aka equine-assisted therapy (EAT), is a form of experiential therapy that involves interactions and activities with horses. It does not necessarily involve riding horses, but all activities related to horses, such as feeding, grooming, haltering and leading them. A mental health professional frequently oversees the activities (often in conjunction with a horse professional), and helps patients process their thoughts, feelings, and behavior patterns during and/or after the interaction.

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

If you participate in motivational interviewing in Tennessee, your therapist will focus on four key strategies: open questions, affirmation, reflections, and summarizing. Rather than confront or warn you to change, the clinician will allow you to explore your own motivations and decide what changes you may need to make in your life.

Trauma therapy addresses traumatic incidents from a client's past that are likely affecting their present-day experience. Trauma is often one of the primary triggers and potential causes of addiction, and can stem from child sexual abuse, domestic violence, having a parent with a mental illness, losing one or both parents at a young age, teenage or adult sexual assault, or any number of other factors. The purpose of trauma therapy is to allow a patient to process trauma and move through and past it, with the help of trained and compassionate mental health professionals.

eye-movement iconEye Movement Desensitization And Reprocessing

Research clearly demonstrates that recovery is far more successful and sustainable when loved ones like family members participate in rehab and substance abuse treatment. Genetic factors may be at play when it comes to drug and alcohol addiction, as well as mental health issues. Family dynamics often play a critical role in addiction triggers, and if properly educated, family members can be a strong source of support when it comes to rehabilitation.

The owner is a money hungry theif who takes advantage of sick women and could care less about the safety of the patients in the facility and will do absolutely nothing about security issues and theft. Costs 50 thousand a month and she wont contribute a dime to the facility. The pool is run down and full of algae. There are zero cameras inside and theft happens everyday. They ignore any general complaints. And Jaclyn never even comes to the facility like you are promised and pay for. She robs sick women so she can drive around in nice cars. Its disgusting. I wasted $150k and during my 3 months there I watched all the staff quit because they saw how corrupt it was as well.

I have suffered from alcoholism since 2000 and when I became a client there the professional staff was able to get to the core problem; my mental illness and spiritual malady. I’m forever grateful for my time spent there. It was the best money I ever spent and looking back I was happy and well taken care of there. The individualized treatment saved my life and family!

My wife was in this facility for two months she is still suffering from the same illness but just like other money grabs they'll say she just wasn't ready and they'll be more than happy to take more money. It must be nice to have a job where a good percentage of your clientele don't recover. #Disgusted

PLEASE READ - FINANCIAL AND EMOTIONAL! I am an attorney and before I go in to my review - I should have known better than to sign the agreement and wire non-refundable funds in the amount of $49,000.00.BEFORE arriving to Brookhaven and assessing the facility. But, I am a mother who will go to the moon and back for my daughter who has suffered from anxiety and was asking for help. I thought I had done my due diligence. Brookhaven appeared to the be the perfect solution to my daughter's issues. It was not. We arrived on April 1st, 2017, Saturday late afternoon and we both knew it was not the right environment. We were both exhausted and rationalized our uneasy feeling on exhaustion. By Sunday afternoon, my daughter wanted to leave. By Tuesday afternoon, she was on her way home. I called the owner and never received a call back. I did receive a call back from the attorney. No refund. I just wanted a prorated refund. NO. The environment is not suited for all people and it was not a healthy environment for my daughter. Almost immediately, the routine appeared to be far more strict and severe than what we believed it would be. Very disappointed and would not recommend this facility to anyone.

Response from the ownerInvalid relative date format:
We are sorry that your daughter’s experience with Brookhaven Retreat did not meet her expectations. While Brookhaven Retreat does not require clients to clean and perform manual labor during their stay, we do require them to work very hard at getting well. People who want to make big changes in their lives almost always have a lot of work to do. Our reputation is that we keep our clients very busy and that they will get a lot out of the program if they put in the effort. Naturally the first few days are usually the most challenging, as clients are getting accustomed to a new environment, new friends, new routines and so on. But those that give themselves enough time to become invested in the process invariably come to respect it and even enjoy it.

Brookhaven Retreat is a small facility with a very high level of service. When we engage with clients we dedicate space for them, order materials, and arrange highly specialized staff to address their needs. This means that when clients cut short their stays there are significant expenses that do not end when they walk out the door. There is just no way we can offer services on a per-day or per-week basis or make pro-rated refunds. As you note, our documentation and contracts reflect this.

Again, we regret that things didn’t work out here for your daughter. We make every effort to be up-front with our policies and to impart to our potential clients the level of commitment required for our program.

I attended Brookhaven for 4 months, and it benefited me in more ways than I can recount. They saved my life. I was at rock bottom, hopeless, and at the point of committing suicide, and the staff taught me how, and helped me lift myself back up. I am now full of hope for the future, and am thriving in my life. Brookhaven is very expensive but my family and I agree it was more than worth the investment. I thank God every day for the healing he brought to my life through the staff and other women at Brookhaven.

Response from the ownerInvalid relative date format:
We appreciate you sharing your Brookhaven Retreat experience. It is stories like yours that make everything we do worthwhile. Best of luck for your future.

I had a wonderful, life-saving experience at Brookhaven Retreat last December-May2016 for severe depression, anxiety and addiction. From day 1 I felt like a priority. One of the Brookhaven staff flew to me and flew back with me to bring me to Brookhaven. They had a car waiting for me at the airport. Upon arrival my assigned counselor and the intake staff was waiting to check me in. The staff to patient ratio is without parallel and I felt taken care of at all times. The staff was available 24/7 to review medication or just to talk. We saw our primary therapist in a small group for 2 hours per day and 1 hour per week in individual/family sessions. I met with the psychiatrist once a week and they were extremely dedicated to medication management. This is very rare in an inpatient facility where you are lucky to see you therapist once a week and a psychiatrist once every few weeks. Brookhaven also had many specialists on staff and many therapy modes such as equine therapy, art therapy and a low ropes course. They have a nutritionist and 4 chefs’ onsite to design and individual nutrition plan. This is not a typical 12-step program and gets to the root of all issues through DBT skills. These are the skills I brought home with me to cope with everyday life. The approach at Brookhaven was much more intense and focused than any 12-step rehab. I learned more about myself in 6 months than I could ever learn in a 30 day program or years of therapy. Given the low number of clients and continuous exposure to all of my peers, close relationships developed very quickly. The program was also focused on integration back into society through many off campus outings, off campus family visits and 2 weekends back at home to your daily environment. Overall the program is expensive but worth every penny. Nicole D

Terrible place. Once they have your money, it's over. Does not offer what they advertise. More like a prison. Finding someone to talk to unless it was scheduled days in advance wasn't happening. Don't waste your money!!

Response from the ownerInvalid relative date format:
Robin, we regret that you had a negative experience with us, but are glad you brought this to our attention. We'd like the opportunity to make this up to you, so if you're willing, please contact our General Manager at (865) 573-3656. We hope to hear from you.
