Although I have been dealing with pain and suffering for years. I did not feel the V.A. Was for me. I scheduled an appointment many years ago, showed up and seen guys missing limbs and in wheelchairs. I felt they needed the time and resources, over the mental and physical pain I was enduring. I kept getting the mail, then the emails started, then information on the burn pits and pact act. I was heavily encouraged to go to the V.A. I was told the others missing limbs are being taken care of and I should go because I earned it too, and I wasn’t taking anything from them. So after many years I did. I want to thank the staff who greeted and helped me, as I’m new to the V.A. System. From the eligibility and E.R. Staff and everyone in between. From Dr. Lemons to Dr. Summers. I’ve heard stories about the V.A. Healthcare system that weren’t very flattering. I did not have that negative experience. Everyone was very helpful and helped me navigate not only with eligibility but through the different departments. I understand people can get complacent or have bad days, but the staff genuinely seemed they cared about the people and took their jobs seriously. I appreciate that. I know this can be a thankless job at times, seeing and hearing horrible stuff, and I do apologize for sharing some of my traumatic experiences with the staff, but they listened and put me on the right track to address my service connected needs. I really appreciate everyone who helped me last week. It was a full day, but we did a lot. I want to thank everyone who has called scheduling up all of the follow up appointments. If you are a veteran and need help you should reach out. If you feel you have a service connected injury either physical or mental, I wouldn’t hesitate to reach out, you earned it too! One thing I would like to point out, if you do have a mental and or physical injury and don’t go to the V.A. Hospital, thinking you don’t deserve it, or because you where trained to suck it up, or use other facilities you should really go. I imagine by getting veterans to come to these facilities, it helps with the budget and helps attract and retain good staff and acquire the necessary equipment and maintain facilities. I’ve been using Kaiser and Sutter for decades, but I truly believe the people I met at the Northern California V.A. Hospital really outshines the others. My journey has just started after a long delay, but you shouldn’t make the mistake I did, go. If you are a fellow veteran suffering from depression, having intrusive thoughts or thought of suicide you need to call 988. To all my fellow vets you earned it, go, give them a chance. They did a good job, if they disappoint me in the future , and this was a one off event, I’ll update it in the coming months. But no one skipped a beat. Clean facilities, professional staff. Go! Airborne all the way!

There are not enough words in the world to properly express the gratitude I have for Cherie Buskirk and the care she has given my cousin during her time at AKUA.
My cousin is not a “typical” case. She came into this program homeless, struggling with addiction, cognitively disabled, and functioning mentally much younger than her actual age. She has little support nearby, and I am all the way across the country trying desperately to save someone I love before the streets took her life.
From the very first conversation I had with Cherie, I knew this woman was different.
Not only did she immediately understand the seriousness and complexity of my cousin’s situation, but she approached it with compassion, patience, urgency, intelligence, and genuine love. In just a matter of days, she has gone above and beyond in ways I cannot even fully explain. She has kept me informed, reassured me when I was terrified, advocated for my cousin, and treated her with dignity and humanity instead of judgment.
What stands out the most is that Cherie truly SEES people.
She understood immediately that my cousin’s addiction could not be separated from her disabilities and vulnerability. Instead of treating her like another number or another addict walking through the door, she treated her like a human being worthy of protection, care, safety, and a future.
What has touched me most is that Cherie’s support has extended far beyond what I ever expected. She has not only helped during my cousin’s stay at AKUA, but she has also gone above and beyond helping me navigate long-term aftercare options specifically for adults who are unable to fully care for themselves because of cognitive disabilities and special needs. That level of compassion and dedication is rare, and I honestly do not even know if that is technically part of her job description — but she has stepped in anyway because that is simply the kind of person she is.
You can tell when someone works in this field for a paycheck, and you can tell when someone was genuinely called by God to do this work. Cherie is absolutely the latter.
As a family member who has spent years terrified that I would lose my cousin to addiction, homelessness, exploitation, or the streets, I cannot explain the peace I finally feel knowing she is in the care of someone like Cherie.
AKUA itself has been incredible. The communication, compassion, structure, and level of care have exceeded every expectation I had. But Cherie deserves special recognition because people like her are the reason families like mine are finally able to breathe again.
If you are reading reviews because you are considering sending a loved one here — especially someone vulnerable, fighting addiction, struggling with trauma, or without a support system — please know there are staff members here who genuinely care. Cherie Buskirk is one of those rare people.
She is an asset to this facility, a blessing to the families she helps, and truly one of the most compassionate human beings I have ever spoken to.
People say angels walk among us, and after meeting Cherie, I truly believe that. She is a blessing to the families and lives she touches, and I will forever be grateful for the care and support she has given ours.
Thank you, Cherie. From the bottom of my heart. You are changing lives in ways you probably do not even realize.🥹🙏🏽

I will forever be grateful for Akua. The staff is wonderful. The house is beautiful. Great community living. We have a wonderful group of women here. Akua has given me hope that I can achieve all of my goals as long as I stay sober.
I checked in 12/31/25 and I am a current client now. I was scared but determined to start the new year sober.
Where do I begin? (this might be long! haha)
Aubrey- My case manager has been here every step of the way and helped me with anything I have asked for help with. She goes above and beyond and was there for me during my detox, through court and helping me slowly rebuild my life.
Cherie and Jenelle- I can always go to them for ANYTHING. They assist me with housing and are great with our recovery related groups. They are easy to talk to and overall create a positive enviroment in the house.
Kia- Our COOK! She deserves 5 stars. Every meal is made with love.
Isabella remembers all of my medical treatment and is amazing as well.
Ebony, Marianna, Monica, Erica, Kristen, & Omi. I always feel like I can talk to her about any of my medical needs.
emily- during the beginning of my stay ensuring that I had clothes and necessities... I came with nothing when I came in.
Alan and the maintenance crew always make sure the house and any issues that come up is taken care of and respectful.
Last but not least! Chelsea. She is a superb program director. She really does care. She has put together a great team and I am thankful for everything she does.
If you are in need of treatment, think you have a problem, are unsure... come here. I know it is hard getting clean, but once you are the possibilities are endless for you. Everyone here really does genuinely care for you.

I can’t begin to describe how grateful I am for New Dawn. They truly helped save my life. Thanks to this amazing treatment center, I’ve been in recovery for over three years now.
This location is absolutely beautiful and feels luxurious! I was a client at the Fair Oaks location, but at the time the Loomis location (this location) was co-ed, and we often got to come here for group sessions, acupuncture, nutrition classes, and even to swim in their beautiful pool. The staff was always extremely welcoming, compassionate, and knowledgeable. You could feel that they genuinely cared about us clients, our long-term recovery, and our experience while we were under their care, no matter which site we were at.
The combination of individual therapy and counseling, group sessions, and experiential activities creates an environment where real change is possible while also allowing clients to enjoy the comfort and luxury of the facility, which makes being away from home a little easier. I would 100% recommend New Dawn to anyone who wants to grow, heal, and rebuild their life.

I can honestly say my experience at Diamond House Detox was life-changing. From the moment I walked in, I felt welcomed, supported, and truly cared for. The house itself is extremely clean, comfortable, and well-maintained, which made a huge difference during such an important time in my life.
What really sets this place apart is the full continuum of care. I was able to transition smoothly from detox to residential rehab and then into their IOP program, which gave me the structure and support I needed every step of the way. That consistency made a big impact on my recovery.
The chefs are incredible—the meals are high quality, nutritious, and something you actually look forward to every day. It may seem small, but it really helps when you’re going through this process.

I I very quickly realized I was going to learn a lot and meet some great people and that is exactly how it has played out. The counselors are absolutely amazing and I have learned more about addiction, behavioral therapy, anger management, the science of cravings and the science of addiction than I could have ever imagined. I thought I knew a lot because Ive been to a bunch of AA meetings. Boy was I wrong. The counselors have been absolutely amazing and incredibly helpful. I feel like I got my life back. I love that they take us to the gym and keep us busy all day with groups and physical activity, serve us healthy delicious food, and took us to an Alpaca Farm which was sooooo much fun! Sacramento, CA | The J Street Community Health Center is part of Wellspace Health. It is located in Sacramento, California. It was formerly known as The Effort. They offer treatment services for individuals with substance use and dual diagnosis disorders. They offer a sliding scale fee. MediCal, Medicare and Family PACT are accepted. Effort Counseling Center prov | Treatments Programs Payment Options | I arrived downtown and parked right out front. The waiting room was clean and .... empty. I had the place to myself and I was seen by a nurse within 15 minutes of arrival. Doctor Wilkes came in soon after, and was absolutely invested in finding solutions for my concerns. What a contrast to how I thought ny experience would be, based on some of these reviews. In any case, I hope people give this place a fair shot. They were the only clinic who would book an in- person appointment for me within days rather than months!

I’m writing this second review because this place is truly awful. I visit here for my orthodontics, and the staff is incredibly slow and unfriendly. Even when the lobby is empty, it takes them 30 minutes to an hour just to get the doctor to call me up to my appointment. I’m thoroughly disappointed with every experience I’ve had here.

The program focuses on enthusiast sobriety and teaches kids that life can be fun and fulfilling when you are working together on the 12 Steps. The staff are some of the best people we have ever worked with and we have tried a lot of mental health and substance programs in the past. This program saved our son’s life and the parent support has taught us so much about raising a teen to become a responsible adult and how to deal with substance use in a healthy way. People drive from all over the area to join the group and it’s no surprise, there is no where else with this type of support.

The Pathway Program saved my daughter's life. She was completely out of control and abusing drugs and alcohol. She was getting in trouble and hanging out with the wrong crowd.
The first time I brought her to the shop, all of the counselors and kids welcomed her with open arms. She instantly had clean and sober friends her age that she could relate to and have fun with. The kids hold each other accountable and are a huge support to each other. They are together almost every day and provide the vital friendship needed to succeed in recovery.
The Pathway Program is not the typical outpatient program where you attend during the day, but then are alone at night and on the weekends. Two week nights a week the kids are together doing recovery related groups. On the weekends the kids do all kinds of different activities and learn how to have fun being sober in real life. This is part of the aftercare part of the program.
There is an excellent parent support group once a week with parents that have been through it all. The parents are so supportive and I was able to call them anytime of the day or night with any questions. The counselors are extremely knowledgeable about addiction and connect with the kids extremely well. They were also available anytime to help with crisis situations and offer support.
I feel so blessed to have been able to get my daughter the help she needed through The Pathway Program. It has changed both of our lives for the better and offered us hope for the future. I would highly recommend this program for any teens or young adults that are struggling with addiction.

We are so grateful to have found Pathways! When we finally realized our 17 year old daughter had a drug and alcohol problem we had no idea where to turn. There didn’t seem to be many options for young people. We reached out to Pathways and found a welcoming program that instantly felt like family! It was a slow start for our daughter to want to be sober, but with the tools the program provided and the love and support of the group, she is almost 8 months clean and sober. Her entire outlook has changed. She’s living her life from a place of honesty and being of service to others. She has like-minded friends in the program that support her in enthusiastic sobriety. We are so thankful to have found a place that helped her make these things happen!
Another aspect of Pathways that we appreciate is the parent support group. This was key as it helped us to make the right moves to help our daughter heal and move forward. It provided support, tools, and encouragement.
I wish every city had a great place like this for teens and young adults to heal and find happiness! If you are looking for a place to help your kid (and you) through the challenge of addiction this is it!

There is no way to describe how grateful I am for the team at Pathways for the guidance and support they provided. The amount of care and empathy that was shown by each staff member was unparalleled, and the tools they provided will last a lifetime. Stephen was so much more than just a counselor. He is a mentor, a guiding light, and showed me a way to live and love myself that I had forgotten was possible. Thank you to everyone who helped me along the way and thank you for being a part of my recovery!

Pathways Recovery Gave Us Our Daughter Back
When my daughter showed up at Pathways Recovery, she was drinking 10 Fireballs a day—plus gin. She was completely broken, emotionally, spiritually, and physically. As a parent, it’s heartbreaking to watch your child spiral like that and feel powerless to help. We were desperate for something or someone who could reach her.
From the very first phone call, Jennifer in admissions was amazing. She treated us with kindness and compassion, and she made us feel like there was still hope. Getting our daughter admitted felt like the first step toward saving her life.
The team at Pathways took her in, detoxed her safely, and showed her a new way to live—a life that doesn’t include alcohol. They didn’t just help her stop drinking; they helped her rediscover herself. They gave her tools, structure, and support to start healing from the inside out.
What meant so much to us was how responsive and communicative the staff was. They kept us informed, answered every question, and genuinely cared about our daughter’s well-being. We could feel that she wasn’t just another client—she was someone they truly wanted to help.
The facility itself is peaceful and comfortable—a large, beautiful home tucked into the foothills outside Roseville, with a pool and a calm, healing atmosphere. It was the perfect place for her to start over.
Thanks to Pathways Recovery, we have our daughter back. She’s sober, she’s grounded, and she’s finally living again. We’ll be forever grateful to Jennifer and everyone at Pathways for helping our family find hope again
