What’s great is that they only take a limited number of clients (~10) at a time so you have individualized care. The staff is truly caring about each client. My husband had an emergency requiring hospitalization and treatment on March 20-24. His dedicated doctors and nurses on the 4th floor saved his life and we’ll be forever grateful. We call this situation “divine intervention” because we were on a flight to Honolulu on our way to our mainland home when the Kona storms grounded all Honolulu air traffic and we were redirected to Maui. While on the ground there, he became seriously ill. The EMTs arrived swiftly and recognized his dangerous situation. Upon arrival at MMMC, he was quickly tested, diagnosed, and scheduled for a procedure on Saturday morning, followed by surgery on Sunday morning. Had we made our flight to the mainland, it’s doubtful that he would have survived. The people of Maui are so very fortunate to have this facility and its incredible staff. Mahalo to all involved! I felt so welcome from the beginning, and it really became a home away from home for me. The staff took the time to get to know me, cared about what I was going through, and pushed me in ways that helped me believe in myself again. The encouragement and support I received every day made such a difference. One of the things I’ll always be grateful for is the community. HIR gets you involved in AA and NA meetings around Kona, and because Kona is such a small and close-knit place, you start seeing familiar faces and building real connections. The people I met and the friendships I made became such an important part of my recovery. I had been to treatment in Los Angeles before, and honestly, I came to HIR with a lot of doubt. My experiences in LA left me wondering if treatment could really change my life. HIR completely changed that perspective for me. Of course, treatment isn’t always sunshine and rainbows. There are challenging days, especially when everyone is at different points in their recovery, but that’s part of the process and those moments don’t define the experience as a whole. If you truly want recovery and are willing to put the work in, I believe this program gives you a really supportive environment to do that. They also keep you busy and give you experiences outside of the treatment center. Going to the gym, beach and hiking outings with your therapist, getting massages, and getting out into the community made the experience feel so much more well-rounded. Being in Hawai’i definitely doesn’t hurt either, but it was the people and the environment that made this place so special to me. I also want to give a special thank you to Toby, my therapist. He made a real difference for me and always made me feel comfortable being honest. I’m very grateful I got to work with him. And Tiffany deserves a special mention too. She is such a positive and inspiring person, and her energy brought a lot of encouragement to the environment. Having staff who genuinely want to see you succeed means more than they probably realize. I stayed for 60 days, and HIR gave me an opportunity to actually start rebuilding my life. I came in unsure of whether treatment could really work for me, and I’m leaving with a completely different perspective and so much more hope for my future. I would wholeheartedly recommend this program to anyone who is ready to put the work into their recovery. I will always be grateful that I ended up at Hawai’i Island Recovery. I remember being up at 2am googling treatment centers and having no idea who to trust or where to send her. When her addiction got bad I felt completely hopeless. She went to so many treatment centers I honestly lost count. LA, Texas, God awful Florida. We tried all of it. Every place promised amazing care and every time we thought maybe this is finally it. It never was. Some places were overcrowded and others basically gave her a nice room and gave her cell phone to her and told her groups were in a few hours. A lot of these places looked amazing online, but once they had our money or insurance it felt like that was all they cared about. She would come home and eventually we were right back where we started. The Ohana was the first place that actually felt different. When I talked to Gabriel there was no pressure and it felt like he cared. The assessment surprised me too. He actually spent time talking to her and understanding what was going on. She told me afterwards it almost felt like a therapy session and she actually got something out of it. They were also upfront that treatment came first. The Ohana is definitely beautiful and luxury, but it wasn’t a vacation. She had structure, therapy, groups and expectations. She said the medical detox was comfortable too and she absolutely loved how kind and caring the staff were. What gave us the most peace of mind was knowing they had a doctor they could reach whenever needed. She loved how small the program was and felt like the therapist and staff actually knew her. She especially loved the group therapy and said it was completely different from what she had done before. She loved the outings, the bedroom, jacuzzi, pool and food too, but the difference was she was actually getting something out of treatment. Right now she has more continuous sobriety than she’s ever had in her life. After years of watching the same cycle over and over again, I finally feel like our family has her back. Thats really all I ever wanted. I’m extremely grateful to The Ohana and everyone there who helped her. When I first called, I was expecting the usual sales pitch like I was buying a car or something lol. But the guy I talked to told me he wasn’t there to sell me on the program, he was there to guide me and help me figure out what was best for me. Honestly that alone made me more interested in coming here. Everything he told me over the phone was pretty much exactly how it was when I got there, which I was surprised about. The detox was comfortable because I was given meds, I loved the groups and the therapy was actually helpful. The adventure therapy was really cool too and gave us something different to do. I definitely wasn't bored And the place itself was nice. Having a pool and jacuzzi was definitely a plus. The food was actually amazing too, way better than I expected for a treatment center 😂. Overall I had a really good experience here. I felt comfortable, the staff treated me good and I actually felt like people cared about me getting better. For my first time in treatment, I really couldn’t have asked for a better experience. Definitely the best investment I’ve made in myself. 100% recommend this treatment center. But no system works without people. I owe a great deal to two in particular: Discharge Coordinator Lyn S., and Dr. C Li. Most of the time, wrapping it up properly is the whole experience. Lyn made that possible. She was there every step of the way once discharge process began - from choosing a SNF facility all the way to coordinating the transportation. Without her I would not have known how to navigate the complex web. She laid the groundwork for a smooth transition before holiday, and right before her own vacation. As a seasoned project specialist myself, I couldn't do any better with the kind of attention to detail, in such reassuring manner. I am truly grateful. In between, some very critical decision point, Dr. C Li was there to help, patiently. No jargon, no running around, just clear terms a layman like me can understand. I've learned far beyond medical terms - how to cope with the difficult situation and come up with a better solution. Not best, but better, all things considered. I know I'll have no regrets. Maui Recovery is great for not only substance use- they also help with mental health. What’s great is that they only take a limited number of clients (~10) at a time so you have individualized care. The staff is truly caring about each client. You go on outings all the time to the beach and other places. I had a blast here. Like a mental health vacation, haha

This is a belated thank you to all the wonderful, caring, and skilled people we met at Maui Memorial. My husband had an emergency requiring hospitalization and treatment on March 20-24. His dedicated doctors and nurses on the 4th floor saved his life and we’ll be forever grateful. We call this situation “divine intervention” because we were on a flight to Honolulu on our way to our mainland home when the Kona storms grounded all Honolulu air traffic and we were redirected to Maui. While on the ground there, he became seriously ill. The EMTs arrived swiftly and recognized his dangerous situation. Upon arrival at MMMC, he was quickly tested, diagnosed, and scheduled for a procedure on Saturday morning, followed by surgery on Sunday morning. Had we made our flight to the mainland, it’s doubtful that he would have survived. The people of Maui are so very fortunate to have this facility and its incredible staff. Mahalo to all involved! My experience at Hawai’i Island Recovery has truly been a once-in-a-lifetime experience. I felt so welcome from the beginning, and it really became a home away from home for me. The staff took the time to get to know me, cared about what I was going through, and pushed me in ways that helped me believe in myself again. The encouragement and support I received every day made such a difference. One of the things I’ll always be grateful for is the community. HIR gets you involved in AA and NA meetings around Kona, and because Kona is such a small and close-knit place, you start seeing familiar faces and building real connections. The people I met and the friendships I made became such an important part of my recovery. I had been to treatment in Los Angeles before, and honestly, I came to HIR with a lot of doubt. My experiences in LA left me wondering if treatment could really change my life. HIR completely changed that perspective for me. Of course, treatment isn’t always sunshine and rainbows. There are challenging days, especially when everyone is at different points in their recovery, but that’s part of the process and those moments don’t define the experience as a whole. If you truly want recovery and are willing to put the work in, I believe this program gives you a really supportive environment to do that. They also keep you busy and give you experiences outside of the treatment center. Going to the gym, beach and hiking outings with your therapist, getting massages, and getting out into the community made the experience feel so much more well-rounded. Being in Hawai’i definitely doesn’t hurt either, but it was the people and the environment that made this place so special to me. I also want to give a special thank you to Toby, my therapist. He made a real difference for me and always made me feel comfortable being honest. I’m very grateful I got to work with him. And Tiffany deserves a special mention too. She is such a positive and inspiring person, and her energy brought a lot of encouragement to the environment. Having staff who genuinely want to see you succeed means more than they probably realize. I stayed for 60 days, and HIR gave me an opportunity to actually start rebuilding my life. I came in unsure of whether treatment could really work for me, and I’m leaving with a completely different perspective and so much more hope for my future. I would wholeheartedly recommend this program to anyone who is ready to put the work into their recovery. I will always be grateful that I ended up at Hawai’i Island Recovery. Thank you to everyone there who showed up for me, believed in me, challenged me, laughed with me, and helped me remember who I am. This place will always hold a very special place in my heart. 🤙🏼🌺

I did a 30 day program at HIR and can honestly say it was the best thing I could have ever done for myself. From the daily therapy, the meetings, the food provided by the chef and the outings, this program is made to work if you want it to. All the staff were beyond great and very attentive when needed. I don’t normally write reviews, but after seeing what The Ohana did for my family member, I felt like I needed to write this. I remember being up at 2am googling treatment centers and having no idea who to trust or where to send her. When her addiction got bad I felt completely hopeless. She went to so many treatment centers I honestly lost count. LA, Texas, God awful Florida. We tried all of it. Every place promised amazing care and every time we thought maybe this is finally it. It never was. Some places were overcrowded and others basically gave her a nice room and gave her cell phone to her and told her groups were in a few hours. A lot of these places looked amazing online, but once they had our money or insurance it felt like that was all they cared about. She would come home and eventually we were right back where we started. The Ohana was the first place that actually felt different. When I talked to Gabriel there was no pressure and it felt like he cared. The assessment surprised me too. He actually spent time talking to her and understanding what was going on. She told me afterwards it almost felt like a therapy session and she actually got something out of it. They were also upfront that treatment came first. The Ohana is definitely beautiful and luxury, but it wasn’t a vacation. She had structure, therapy, groups and expectations. She said the medical detox was comfortable too and she absolutely loved how kind and caring the staff were. What gave us the most peace of mind was knowing they had a doctor they could reach whenever needed. She loved how small the program was and felt like the therapist and staff actually knew her. She especially loved the group therapy and said it was completely different from what she had done before. She loved the outings, the bedroom, jacuzzi, pool and food too, but the difference was she was actually getting something out of treatment. Right now she has more continuous sobriety than she’s ever had in her life. After years of watching the same cycle over and over again, I finally feel like our family has her back. Thats really all I ever wanted. I’m extremely grateful to The Ohana and everyone there who helped her.

This was my first time ever going to treatment and honestly it was probably the best investment I’ve ever made in myself. When I first called, I was expecting the usual sales pitch like I was buying a car or something lol. But the guy I talked to told me he wasn’t there to sell me on the program, he was there to guide me and help me figure out what was best for me. Honestly that alone made me more interested in coming here. Everything he told me over the phone was pretty much exactly how it was when I got there, which I was surprised about. The detox was comfortable because I was given meds, I loved the groups and the therapy was actually helpful. The adventure therapy was really cool too and gave us something different to do. I definitely wasn't bored And the place itself was nice. Having a pool and jacuzzi was definitely a plus. The food was actually amazing too, way better than I expected for a treatment center 😂. Overall I had a really good experience here. I felt comfortable, the staff treated me good and I actually felt like people cared about me getting better. For my first time in treatment, I really couldn’t have asked for a better experience. Definitely the best investment I’ve made in myself. 100% recommend this treatment center.

Groups were honestly great. The therapy felt real too, not like they were just sitting there listening to me. I didn't expect to actually have fun in treatment but I did here. It’s not like an institution, which made it easier to actually deal with my stuff. Staff were around no matter what time it was, never felt like nobody was paying attention. When I left I had an actual plan, people to call, next steps figured out. If you're on the fence, just go for it.

I had a genuinely great experience during my stay at detox. I went in expecting to be miserable and counting the minutes until I could leave, but it turned out to be the complete opposite. I met some really solid people who were going through the same thing, and having that support made the whole process not just manageable, but surprisingly enjoyable. The staff was friendly, supportive, and went out of their way to help me with applications and next steps for treatment. It honestly felt like a much‑needed break from real life—a chance to step back, reset, and really look at my goals and where I want my life to go. By the end, I actually didn’t want to leave, which still makes me laugh. I’m hoping this is a once‑in‑a‑lifetime experience, but if I ever do need help again, I know exactly where to go. It was a roller coaster ride after my 90-year old mom fell. Looking back, two months later, I feel extremely lucky. QMC has a great system that enables people to do good work. Whenever I wasn't visiting hospital, I relied on MyChart to keep up. But no system works without people. I owe a great deal to two in particular: Discharge Coordinator Lyn S., and Dr. C Li. Most of the time, wrapping it up properly is the whole experience. Lyn made that possible. She was there every step of the way once discharge process began - from choosing a SNF facility all the way to coordinating the transportation. Without her I would not have known how to navigate the complex web. She laid the groundwork for a smooth transition before holiday, and right before her own vacation. As a seasoned project specialist myself, I couldn't do any better with the kind of attention to detail, in such reassuring manner. I am truly grateful. In between, some very critical decision point, Dr. C Li was there to help, patiently. No jargon, no running around, just clear terms a layman like me can understand. I've learned far beyond medical terms - how to cope with the difficult situation and come up with a better solution. Not best, but better, all things considered. I know I'll have no regrets. Strange how human brain works, after a while, many details become a blur, what remains is the warm fuzzy feeling, voices and gestures that remind you there are still a lot of beautiful things in the world.
